    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    This time I want to share with my users and non-users how to approach a deep junction on a steering-wheel. In fact, it adds to it a sporty appearance. It also avoids the constant rubbing of the driver's hand.
    For this process it is necessary to cut a recess on the steering-wheel rubber rim. Three to four mm wide are more than enough to make the cavity that will house the leather sewing junctions. The depth would be 4 to 5 mm. Do not exceed to avoid the weakening of the rubber rim.
    To make the cutting easier I have cut these recesses until touching the metal rim. To reinforce the deep part I have formed a 3mm layer using 'magic glue and baking soda'. I would recommend not to cut so deep.
    For this demonstration I have used two scraps of beige automotive leather 1.35 mm thick.
    As we can see, to make the leather deep into the crevice the edges sewing allowance should be cut in a convex way. The more convex the edge is, the deeper it would be.
    To ease the sewing process I consider an important tip the basting of the tips. Tailors mostly resort to basting before sewing the fabric pieces down.
    The stitches to join the edges should be short. 3 mm is ok. Thin thread 92 size for this process. A thin needle 18=110 is useful on the machine.
    A waxed thread helps to shape the deep junction. Wet glue at the beginning to let the seams slide into the crevice.
    At the end of the video I show a steering-wheel with four deep look junctions.
    I hope you enjoy this video and find it useful!

      Ya le mandé la dirección y nombre de la tienda de hilos en Guadalajara en el otro comentario.
      No olvide que el hilo número cero es para las puntadas delgadas europeas y el doble cero que es mas grueso es para las de beisbol y de cruz.
      Ahi venden hilos bondeados de varios calibres. Estos no se deshilachan y sirven para los volantes. Lo único malo es que no hay en muchos colores.
      El hilo 8 para tapiceria lo venden tambien. Hay mucha variedad en hilos para zapateria y tapicería.

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  5 місяців тому +1

      Sorry for the delay. I did not see the commentary. Yes, it is possible. The process is similar for full grain leather and finished leathers. The 'key' is the half moon convex cut to let the junction deeper into the crevice.

    And here I thought you would have used a clear twine to tighten the stitched portion and just left it in and then it would have kept the shape...but maybe it isn't necessary after the glue sets in and the leather is not wanting to pull back away due to the rest of the stitching?
    Nice work! Around how long does it take to completely reupholster the average steering wheel? My old boss that still runs his auto upholstery business gets lots of calls for steering wheel estimates...and he doesn't do them. He said he'd refer people to me. Do you usually have people already remove their steering wheels and that way you don't have to deal with car storage and air bags etc? I had thought of doing this as a side gig. And just wondering how often these jobs are done? I know there are aftermarket steering wheels as well as junkyard options... I'm wondering if this is something you might do only cuz you're doing a full interior already and this just is a finishing touch? Or if there are people that (maybe due to their work (construction?...or maybe hand hygiene products and lotions tend to damage their steering wheel upholstery)
    I also have seen the slip on covers with some even having heating options...but they are WAY thick and (in my opinion are unsafe....as a slip on cover SLIPS)
    Any insights from a skilled and knowledgeable professional?

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  2 роки тому +6

      Regularly to leather-cover a steering wheel (just the rim) takes from 5 to 8 hours.
      Actually I do not do upholstery everyday. I do it as a hobby and enjoy myself posting/sharing videos on youtube. I only have a private shop at home.
      I have learnt to remove the steering-wheels. Some of them have airbags, but following certain procedures anybody can do it. If you want to get involved in this field I'd recommend you to receive the wheel already removed. There are specialized technicians (car electricians) who are really trained everyday removing most of these pieces, dashboards, instrument panels, etc. To install the wheel back it must be scanned and set up to the car computer again to make it workable.
      I have two videos about removing wheels:
      ua-cam.com/video/it2w77xWTsk/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/IKEajzRx09Q/v-deo.html
      I have some related basic videos about steering-wheels that might be useful:
      The piece/s for a steering wheel should be cut on the stretchy side of leather material:
      ua-cam.com/video/dhmCJFpOs_0/v-deo.html
      It is advisable the use of automotive leather because it has two to three coats of transparent sealer on top to protect it from UVrays and daily driver's rubbing of hands:ua-cam.com/video/wPw7SixQb7o/v-deo.html
      These basic courses would help to understand and upholster some steering-wheels:

    Hola. I was wondering what thicknesss or type of leather you recommend for steering wheels?

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  8 місяців тому +1

      Any upholstery leather for automotive purposes is useful. The thickness is a standard measure 1.2 to 1.3 mm thick
      ua-cam.com/video/wPw7SixQb7o/v-deo.html
      An automotive leather has a transparent rubbing of passengers and car drivers.
      There are other upholstery leathers that do not have the sealer or just a thin coat. These leathers are softer to the feel and look nicer. The problem is we should clean and condition it constantly and be very careful while sitting over in case of the seats or be also careful while touching the steering wheel. I mean grease, dirt, sweat, etc. in our hands.
      Automotive leathers can be cleaned with a wet rag. These can also be conditioned every 6 months.
