  • People do have different heads and needs and my experience does not necessarily reflect your impressions. But wanted to share it so the information is out there. We have lots of equipment, enough for 6-7 people. We will slowly go through different parts.
2 masks can be bought at :PurpleHeart Armory
    Canada PBT: Crossed swords fencing
    Canada AF: Dark Age Creations
    Castille Armory

I've seen more people with dented PBT masks than anything else. I've never seen a AF mask that was dented. I really wished they made 1600N bibs though. Their mesh is unbeatable.

Ya it would be nice for going to Europe. I'll have to buy a different mask if I go compete.
There's no tournaments in NA that require 1600n, so no pressure on AF to update it.

My whole group uses them for everything related to longsword and even mixed weapon sparring.
At the weekend i got hit pretty hard by a thrust from a staff and i don´t even have a slight dent in it.
I find these mask pretty sturdy even after 6 Years of use/misuse. Only thing i see is scratches on the black painting on the mesh.

I've seen dents in AF masks.
I have one that is a hand-me-down from another club member. It came with a dent across the forehead on the left side. It also came with the stitching on the left side of the forehead broken.
Basically the hit was so hard it also broke stitching. He doesn't remember getting hit that hard there, though. O.o

Oh thanks for letting me know, I hadn't actually heard of one being dented, apart from some really really old ones. But I assumed it was possible and happened.

Its not the Canadian winters, they just bend easily.

Have you seen a PBT Warrior mask so far? One of our clubmembers has one and I found it pretty interesting with the elongated mesh.

I have seen them but I haven't worn one, Its honestly something I think should be standard on HEMA mask. Makes it so nothing could get to the back of the head at all. The warrior Mask looks longer than necessary though. And I don't trust PBT mesh now. I'm hoping the: Arming Guild Rearguard mask gets produced, It also has the extension, and increased padding etc. But I hope soon there are radical changes to head and neck protection. We're still just modifying fencing equipment. I think have the big neck on jackets and no bib on masks would be a safer direction. Its a huge safety risk getting blades to the neck and we've just been adding small modifications to jackets, catchers etc.

@@superiorhema Yeah. We still have a lot of problems in the equipment. The triangle of death for example. Pretty shitty.
I was a little surprised and disappointed from the PBT masks. That is one weak mesh.

@@nicopetri3533 Yes, we haven't had any points go in there luckily but we have had quillons hit people in that more than once. It was frustrating, we have marked all the PBT masks with a "no sparring" sticker. Have the PBTs in your group done better?

    • @nicopetri3533

@@superiorhema honestly. The guy with the warrior mask is the only one who has a PBT mask at our place and he hasn't done to much sparring yet, so I don't feel to comfortable giving any positive feedback. It isn't dented yet though.

@@superiorhema the warrior mask bends too btw. It's not not as bad as in your video, but it's not gonna last as long as other masks.

Any thoughts on Rearguard V2 masks?

They look great, I've wanted to get one for a couple years. You can see video reviews by: HEMA reviews, Matt Easton, and Schildwache Potsdam. It looks like it actually conforms to a head like a PBT and has phenomenal padding. The only complaint I've seen is the bib extends back quite far and is stiff. I'm waiting to see if they change that up a bit so you can look down easily. Cause it is quite an expensive mask. I think in like 20 years masks like Rearguard will be standard in HEMA, there's no reason to have the chance for very easy spine and back of the head injury, when there's an easy fix. I know PBT did it first but there masks kinda suck so it didn't catch on.

@@superiorhema Thank you for your answer and suggestions. Yes it's true that they are expensive. But if I e.g. take a PBT Warrior with the fitting padding thingy (which propably provides about the same safety) it's even more expensive. So that's not too bad I think.

The weather won’t be what effects your mesh being dented. It’s just not great material.

The place there stored all year doesn't have heating or air conditioning so we have had different types of gear break, and wear down, from the extreme weather changes. But yes I generally just say PBTs are crap now.
