    Another thing to consider - the "harness" within the mask. Most fencing masks have just some padding, which is fine for regular fencing, but lacking for longsword. If the masks moves around too much, mostly back and forth, your nose\forehead might hit the mesh, as the mask is pushed backwards (as the result of, say, a powerful thrust\strike), creating a "waffle" pattern injury.
    But if there's a forehead band, like the PBT Warrior mask does, this is a lot less likely to happen. The PBT warrior mask also has good padding and steel reinforcements, but the mesh is shit and the back strap wears out very quickly and becomes loose (and it cannot be readily replaced).
    The AF mask is great. The mesh is resilient and the straps don't wear out as much. The padding is somewhat basic, but you can supplement that by wearing a scrum cap, or just adding foam inserts (with some creativity). But, if it's pushed into your face hard enough, your nose and forehead may meet the mesh, and you'll be left, once more, with the infamous "waffle". :D

    The video was quite interesting. Thanks. I totally agree on the point about the removable inlay of the mask. My new mask has one and it's amazing.
    How many dents did that PBT mask have before the tournament or sparring match where it got so beaten up? I replaced mine after the first bigger dent, just to be safe.

    Good video, as usual. You're listed as a presenter at the PHO in a couple of weeks. I'm not competing, just judging, but it will be fun to meet one of the UA-camrs that got me into HEMA. See you there.

    Excellent and very informative, thank you! I was literally just looking to buy a couple masks, so the timing is also perfect! Hopefully I can find a HEMA group near me. (Portland, OR area)

    Good points about masks and overlays - pros and cons - and especially the importance of good fit. Have you had a chance to try the Wukusi HEMA mask/helmet? Just curious about your thoughts on that mask.

    Heh, yeah, I bet getting a concussion that knocks you out of training for more than half a year would really really suck, huh?
    I've been overlay scalped a couple of times by a thrust as well as having done it to others. I think it looks cool if nothing else.

    As a complete beginner i have a stupid question.. 😅
    I got a mask from allstar that fits me relativly well, but if i look a bit down the outer mask ring is pushing my larynx in.. is this common and something i have to get used to or did i get the wrong mask size?
    What can i do to prevent this in future?
    Thanks alot in advance :)

    Good stuff as always. I'm personally wary of the "We don't use helmets/armour because blossfechten" angle, because it's purely semantic. We are wearing armour, it just isn't rigid. I would happily wear rigid armour that offered more mobility...except the cost problem is very real :/

    • @scottmacgregor3444
      @scottmacgregor3444 2 роки тому +1

      Don't know if you've tried an actual steel Hemet yet, but there are a couple of other down sides. One, taking hits when using steel on steel is LOUD. And two, it can also result in more wear and tear on your weapon, especially if the helmet has any protrusions (ridges or sharp angles).

    • @jritchey267
      @jritchey267 2 роки тому

      @@scottmacgregor3444 These are very fair points, but if you're wearing it just for functional protection (as opposed to actively recreating harnisfechten), there's no reason a helmet has to be steel.

    • @BrittanySaintLeafy
      @BrittanySaintLeafy  2 роки тому +1

      Semantics or not, there are people who feel very strongly about differentiation between blossfechten and harnisfechten, and one hill those folks will die on is the equipment being used.

    • @jritchey267
      @jritchey267 2 роки тому

      @@BrittanySaintLeafy I can respect wanting a distinction (and am no stranger to getting caught up in semantics). There are just times when I feel it gets into "missing the forest for the trees" territory and may do more harm than good--particularly where it comes to head protection. Personal preference would be a good third or hybrid option; but to the best of my knowledge, there isn't a great one yet.

    Could you specify exactly the sort of product you mean by a gel cap? I think I might need this for my mask just to fill it out a bit

    • @BrittanySaintLeafy
      @BrittanySaintLeafy  2 роки тому +1

      Gladly! Basically it’s any kind of head covering that fits under the mask and utilizing gel to absorb impact. Rugby scrum caps are a good example of this. You can also get gel caps from Purple Heart Armoury! I have one from them :)

  • @BlackNapalmF4

    Nice video! How much does the mask restrict head movement? I figure it would be a fair bit.

    • @BrittanySaintLeafy
      @BrittanySaintLeafy  2 роки тому

      If it fits properly it should not be super restrictive, but at the same same your head should not be able to swivel around inside the mask while it stays stationary. :)

    • @nullifye7816
      @nullifye7816 2 роки тому

      It doesn't really, just makes your head generally bigger and heavier. Depending on the bib it can make holding a side on position with the shoulder close to the head difficult for those linear lunging systems. Invariably you need to compromise a bit.

    • @scottmacgregor3444
      @scottmacgregor3444 2 роки тому

      It will depend on the overlay. My OG SupFen overlay is really bulky and does restrict how far I can turn my head. On the other hand, it offers a lot of additional protection and padding. It even has plastic slats under the padding going down the back of the head and neck.
      Everything is a compromise.

  • @bensteinhauser784
    @bensteinhauser784 Рік тому +1

    Do you have any gel liners you would recommend?

    • @BrittanySaintLeafy
      @BrittanySaintLeafy  Рік тому

      Lots of options! Rugby scrum caps, which you can get easily and affordably on Amazon, work great. Purple Heart Armoury also has some that sit like a beanie instead of coming down under the chin like the rugby ones. The rugby style is more protective, but bulkier and a little warmer under the mask.

  • @knightlon

    So you deny hits when they're not audible enough? :D

    • @BrittanySaintLeafy
      @BrittanySaintLeafy  2 роки тому +1

      No, but there’s definitely a noticeable trend on the tournament circuit for considering gear that isn’t as loud when it gets hit. Sometimes judges will call a point “because they heard it but didn’t see it” knowing that different gear makes specific sounds when hit with a feder. I’m not a fan of that type of judging, but I do like a holistic approach to judging. Nevertheless for people who are more tournament minded this is something they think about. It’s usually more so for hand protection, but it’s been noted for other types of gear as well.

      I was waffled once. It was my main motivation for getting my own mask. Didn't do any real sparring for a few weeks because I was paranoid for a while.
