I've heard people say Chris Thile is currently the best mandolin player in the world. Others dispute it. However, the best argument I've heard that everyone seems to agree with is that Chris is the most IMPORTANT mandolin player in the world. As a bluegrass ambassador, mandolin player, composer, singer, and all-around musician he seems to have this bottomless well of talent. Simply amazing.
I had the same thought! Even people I consider to be incredible singers like adele and lizzo are occasionally slightly off key in their tiny desks, but these guys' pitch and harmonies are flawless it's insane
There is a video of these guys talking about playing in a group. They mention playing around a single mic and how mindful they are of their stage placement to balance their volumes. Even here you can see them move away and closer to the mic as they play.
Chris Thile has some really great facial expressions when he's deep in a jam. It's like he's playing metal & just rocking out yet he's doing it & killing it on a Mandolin.
Hey man, music is music. You get really into a jam, you forget what the body does sometimes. Bluegrass at this point is an extension of jazz/metal/country/rock/etc, and can hit HARD. I've seen bluegrass bands hit tighter and more insane sets than half of the metal bands I've seen...honestly, half of the bluegrass you'll see at a local bluegrass festival are are going to be just as technically proficient (or more) than a ton of metal bands. The musicianship is insane.
