I had the same thought! Even people I consider to be incredible singers like adele and lizzo are occasionally slightly off key in their tiny desks, but these guys' pitch and harmonies are flawless it's insane
There is a video of these guys talking about playing in a group. They mention playing around a single mic and how mindful they are of their stage placement to balance their volumes. Even here you can see them move away and closer to the mic as they play.
Chris Thile has some really great facial expressions when he's deep in a jam. It's like he's playing metal & just rocking out yet he's doing it & killing it on a Mandolin.
Hey man, music is music. You get really into a jam, you forget what the body does sometimes. Bluegrass at this point is an extension of jazz/metal/country/rock/etc, and can hit HARD. I've seen bluegrass bands hit tighter and more insane sets than half of the metal bands I've seen...honestly, half of the bluegrass you'll see at a local bluegrass festival are are going to be just as technically proficient (or more) than a ton of metal bands. The musicianship is insane.
@@KC-fb8ql I love watching him. it's clear that he's having a lot of fun. he actually stated in an interview that he doesn't even notice how much he moves around while he's performing without watching the videos. not many people love what they do as much as him and not many people are as good at it either.

The first time I heard Punch Brothers was about two years ago, on this particular set. The first harmony on My Oh My was the first cognisant memory I have of saying "this is the music my soul has been searching for" and haven't looked back. By far my favorite band. I was able to see them live in Madison, WI in March 2019 and it is one of the most memorable nights of my life....still send chills down my spine, Love you guys!
I've heard people say Chris Thile is currently the best mandolin player in the world. Others dispute it. However, the best argument I've heard that everyone seems to agree with is that Chris is the most IMPORTANT mandolin player in the world. As a bluegrass ambassador, mandolin player, composer, singer, and all-around musician he seems to have this bottomless well of talent. Simply amazing.
The more I listen to this (and I listen a lot) the more impressed I am with Noam Pikelny's banjo work on "Magnet". I mean, they're all fabulous, but wow, 13:15...

I actually told Chris last time I saw them live that I'd love to see them collaborate with Snarky Puppy. Told Michael League the same thing. They're both aware of the others and said something along the lines of "don't count it out!"

I love how so much of punch brothers music is rhythmically very reminiscent of a ticking clock. Been a while since I've listened to their albums. I think it's time again.
Chris Thile is a force of nature. A supremely gifted artist. The rest of the band is fantastic too. Try to catch the Punch Brothers live, and consider yourself lucky if you do.

Well. It took me a while to arrive here. TLDR: I've been watching Punch Brothers videos for two days. These guys are absolutely amazing. Every single one of them. It all started when I recently heard Chris Thile on A Prairie Home Companion. It was the first time I'd heard it without Garrison Keillor, so I immediately noticed (I grew up with it playing every weekend in my house), and thought, "nahhhhh." I was about to shut it off, when I heard that [Judge] John Hodgman was on the show. I love him, so I left it on. Then, Chris started playing music. So I decided to Google him and found out that he (1) is an "American virtuoso mandolinist," and (2) created Punch Brothers, who a friend recommended to me years ago. THEN, I youtubed "Punch Brothers," and now: here I am. Apparently forever. Thank you, NPR, for always delivering!

WGBH Music ...and Thanks so much for posting the videos from HOB. I was able to see them both night in San Francisco at The Fillmore where as you might suspect, I was right in front/center at the barricade both nights and it STILL sounded that good.

Decided to start going though all of NPR's TIny Desks. Came across this, and WOW. Love at first sight (sound?). Instantly went to look at tour dates. They aren't coming to TX any time soon, unfortunately.

Watching the love on Chris E.'s face watching Chris. T. have a moment is the greatest joy to me of this TDC. I have followed his dad since 1971. Beautiful.
For 'Julep', almost never heard a Bass (or maybe a group) so perfectly tuned! Such commitment to perfection with soul is hard to find generally but not so rare at The Tiny Desk, always come back here! And share this treasure to preserve it!
I saw them at Bonnaroo last year and then they played the Superjam right after their show and they were just truly amazing! I had never listened to them before but I'm so glad I decided to stop by. Such amazing music that just comes naturally. They did a cover of "Just What I Needed" by the Cars that I'm so so glad that I recorded because it was so good.
These guys are the best. We had the privilege of seeing them play in Shetland in August. Wow!!!!! Unforgettable. What a concert. Thank you Punch Brothers. Hope to see you again soon. x

The staff at NPR are so lucky. It's pretty clear how much Bob is appreciated here on UA-cam but I can't imagine how well he must be treated by his peers for bringing so many amazing bands to their office...of all places.
This is a fact, proven by peer-reviewed research and philosophers everywhere: it is impossible to look at Chris Thile and not smile. That man just makes me so happy. I'm so happy he hosts Live From Here now.
An absolutely masterful concert, their sound is not only at the same level as the recording it is even more vivid, these guys have an amazing chemistry and are top notch, jesus i would definitely pay to see chris thile have his own late night, he is an entertainer and musician of the highest caliber.
I've run into Thile's performances in the past. If something in the form of a musical expression comes together and has Chris Thile's name in the mix, it has to be good (I think it is a basic law of music theory). That is said not to take anything away from the rest of the guys in the band though, they all added to the songs we just heard and are premier musicians as well. What came together here is simply great.
17:20. The moment the music becomes the "Grandfather Clock" in the story, and we experience the beautiful intricacy of its movement. The moment we understand that the narrator has allowed us to enter his version of Heaven and experience it directly. I have an emotional response to the D major chord (in the vocals) on "fill" of "drink our fill" that is very hard to put into words. A life affirming moment of profound majesty.

Revived? It's superior. It's listenable. It's fun. No longer do I reach to the dial to change the station, but to crank the volume up. Thile is the best thing to happen to weekend evening programming on NPR.

Love the contrasts in this group: the transfixed calm expression on the bass player's face in contrast to the unfettered expressiveness of certain others! These are really top-notch musicians.

Yeah they are a huge part of how the sound is good. They know how to work a single mic amazingly. I've seen them do it live.

When you encounter greatness, you just have to sit back, relax and watch the show. Chris Thile is a legend.

That is said not to take anything away from the rest of the guys in the band though, they all added to the songs we just heard and are premier musicians as well. What came together here is simply great.
Maybe the day will come where I don't watch this. But I can't see that happening in the foreseeable future. Just amazing.

17:20. The moment the music becomes the "Grandfather Clock" in the story, and we experience the beautiful intricacy of its movement. The moment we understand that the narrator has allowed us to enter his version of Heaven and experience it directly. I have an emotional response to the D major chord (in the vocals) on "fill" of "drink our fill" that is very hard to put into words. A life affirming moment of profound majesty.

Tune back in! Chris did officially take over, and it's experienced a bit of a revival because of his involvement.
Revived? It's superior. It's listenable. It's fun. No longer do I reach to the dial to change the station, but to crank the volume up. Thile is the best thing to happen to weekend evening programming on NPR.
