This is one of the most powerful and heartbreaking songs ever written. I cry damn near every time I hear it. It makes me miss my wife even when she's next to me, makes me wish I'd kissed my granddad more, makes me want to be a better and more beautiful person. God, to be that kind of talented...
a few years ago I was grieving so after trying to keep it together at work all day, I'd come home and listen to this song on repeat and just cry it out. it'll always be so special to me for helping feel those tough feelings. thank you 💜
"You weren't just a girl that I should meet You were the girl that I would meet" the lyrics in this song are fantastic and the music itself is a masterpiece. Punch Brothers you have a new fan.
Here in Kentucky THIS is the feeling you get. If you get an exited feeling in your spirit while listening to this, then you have a Bluegrass soul. Honestly. If this song calls to you, take a moment out of your life to come to Kentucky, roll down your car windows and breathe in the air while listening to this. Us Bluegrass bloods will welcome you with open arms gladly. 💙 For sadly, so few see our way of life in the light it needs to be shown in.
I see some people think this is boring? You have a right to your opinion but i'd like to offer my perspective: the way the lyrics interlock, the way repetition and variation (a trope in blue grass) anchor the song, the instrumentation and unique melodies, particularly with the mandolin and banjo, it's all so charming and poignant--i think this song is intoxicating, i'd love to slow dance to it. I don't know, different perspectives have helped me appreciate songs, movies, books, etc after my first interaction.
I fully agree.......it's meditative and thoughtful.......music and lyrics are sublime and perfect. Those bored just need to slow down and "really" listen....
Scorpia161 I agree. This song could have been recorded by any number of new-fangled, keyboard-driven "indie rock" bands and it would not have nearly been as good. The instrumentation and the spaces in between the music are what makes this a great song.
Jeffery Edwards Agreed, i don't dislike any of those new fangled indie rock bands really, but the Punch Brothers (particularly Chris Thile) are on some next level stuff.
Man I love listening to this when I'm driving down 64. I live on the East Coast in the United States and we have the most beautiful scenic highway that leads up to the mountains and it just looks absolutely gorgeous in the Fall.... and listening to this while seeing it........Let me just tell you.....pure bliss..... I am so glad I found this song so rhythmic and pretty.
I saw them debut this at the Savannah Music Festival in 2014. The performance was at the Trustees Theater (an incredible venue) and it was more like a symphonic performance than a rock concert. The audience was incredibly attentive, you could hear the music so clearly, no constant talking in the audience like at the Avett Brothers concert the night before. That isn't to say the audience was subdued, it wasn't, especially when the songs ended then the sound was akin to a football stadium, literally a roar. They are precise in concert the song is performed as written. No special affects, no electronic modulation, pure music from instruments to include the voices of the Thile and company.
Cannot stop listening to this song for like 3 days now.. there's just something healing about it - obviously I needed it and just didn't know till this
I can't stop listening to this song. Seriously. I listen to it on repeat for at least 5+ goes at a time. Everything about it is beautiful. The lyrics, the meaning behind them, the instrumentals...gorgeous. Easily my favorite song right now. I'm basically obsessed, haha. I first heard it on the Acoustic Afternoon playlist on Spotify. And now, because of that, I was introduced to Punch Brothers, Nickel Creek, and Chris Thile's glorious mandolin. Love.
These guys are awesome with these almost diminished sounding chords during melodic breakdowns, or un expected minor notes during a mandolin flourish...very pleasent, very cool.
As a professional musician, I find myself drifting away when I listen to music like this. It takes me back to some of the beautiful places that I have seen all over the world. Music is a love language. I love the Punch Brothers, Ben Howard, Bon Iver, Nickel Creek, and so many more. Do I personally sound like those bands? No. However, I appreciate the creativity that others possess because it helps me to think outside of the box and to get away from what it IS that I do. THE lyrics are beautiful and the melody is messmerizing. It is hard to imagine what the world would be like if everything had the same sound, same colors, and same presence. I always try to introduce my friends or other professionals to songs such as these. SO PUNCH BROTHERS IF YOU ARE READING MY MESSAGE, KNOW THAT YOU HAVE A HARD CORE ENDORSED HAMMOND ORGANIST AND ROLAND KEYBOARDIST THAT IS A FAN. We are from two different world's of music, but appreciation is appreciation, and you all stay on my playlist. Familiarity and Julep will never grow old in my book. Please keep up all that you do...Blessings... Hammond/Roland Artist Kim Tibbs
Kim Tibbs OH and I was introduced to you while I was waiting on my food at Star Bucks inside of Barnes and Nobles one day. I had a little time to kill and wanted to read some. OUT of nowhere, I hear this Mandolin and Familiarity was birthed right into my ears and I have listened to everything that you have ever created up to date since that moment!
*Song Lyrics* I died happy in my sleep I died happy in my sleep Our children around and you looking down Heaven's a julep on the porch Heaven's a julep on the porch You and me rocking A grandfather clock is tick, tick, tocking to time We used to wind it She brought the sugar and the mint She brought the sugar and the mint And he brought the whiskey Asked for my blessing Yes sir I know she's Heaven's a julep on the porch Heaven's a julep on the porch You and me rocking A grandfather clock is tick, tick, tocking to time We used to wind it Got time We used to wind it Now the time stands still We drink our fill Out of silver God will never Tarnish like we will You were just a girl that I should meet You were the girl that I would meet For drinks in the backyard A beautiful daughter Lifetimes of summer And love ever after I died happy in my sleep I died happy in my sleep Our children around and you looking down Heaven's a julep on the porch Heaven's a julep on the porch You and me rocking A grandfather clock is tick, tick, tick, tick, tocking to time We used to wind it Got time We used to wind it Oh it's tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tocking to time We used to wind it
Everyone's a critic is seems. This is a beautiful song. Something about that progression just gets me. Not everyone gets great song writing. Thile surely does.
Just heard this for the first time today. Thought it was Ben Folds at first. Then I saw that it wasn't, and now I'm excited to explore more Punch Brothers. Great tune.
I couldn't say it better or think of any words more profound than "I died Happy in my sleep" ,lately , I'd be happy to have a good night sleep. 🌎🚴♀️🎶🎶🎶🎶😘
Lots of great comments here about the craft presented in this song. The beauty is in the care that must be taken by the musicians to weave a precision within the seemingly simple song. The musicianship that groups like Punch Brothers offer is far different than most of the production-driven music of today. It is not everyone's cup of tea, but it is hard to deny the excellence. I agree with Scorpia 161 that a careful listen is intoxicating.
Masterpiece. I relate all the positive comments below. Years pass and this music endures. Thile introduced me to music & lyrics beyond expectations. Introduce those you love to this delight.
Heaven is forever a "Julep" on the porch for me and "My Baby". May she now rest forever in peace. Because of You, I Am Strong. #thelegacyofamandabray #BIGBADCLAM4EVA
This is what I listened to the last night I was in NYC this summer - and there was a storm rolling in over Manhattan and I could see it happening from Brooklyn and it was awesome. The end.
This song is really good any time of the day. But my favorite time to listen to it is when it's Winter. I don't know why, but the feeling of walking around town at night with this song in your ears is just calming to me.
This song makes me extremely nostalgic for some reason. Reminds me of hazy summers, playing on hay bales out in the fields with my friends when we were kids. It’s a nice feeling...
i stumbled upon this by a complete accident. i have never listened to this band before. i am getting ready to explore them for the rest of the day. what a great song
I was just relaxing and listening to a random selection of acoustic music on the internet. .. . Then, this song came on. . . Wow! . . There is hope for the future of music. . . Music like this paints its own pictures and moods and takes one away from the everyday banality of most of modern music. . No need for pretty boys and dancing girls to distract the listener. . Real music is back! . . . Bravo guys!
This is utterly beautiful, and a perfect synopsis of how I want to live... Progressive bluegrass? Defies categorisation, just know this band are doing something important musically and deserve to have a working holiday in New Zealand...
They still cease to amaze me with the way the weave the song. Kudos to the Punch Brothers. And yes I will have to agree, it will be a long wait till the 27th of January, 2015.

Well, another drift of sound and ethereal qualities that seem to creep into Punch Brothers music from time to time! I love this. Can't wait to hear the rest, see the tour, all the etcs. that come with being a fan who lives somewhat close enough to Chicago to make these wonderful concerts! Now, off I go to pre-order my Phosphorescent album. Thank you....needed a fix......this was good enough for a few hours!
Oh my god, this song is just a treasure. Usually purely acoustic music kinda bores me, the sounds always seem so limited in this genre. But theres so much going on here musically, I'm totally wrapped up in how interesting it is. And this is just my first listen! Guess I gotta look at the rest of the band now XD
I agree with so many others, the wait until January 27...oh boy, it will be a long one!!!! Thank you kids for your dedication to your craft and providing us the opportunity to live within your music. Maybe I will get to see you all on tour this next year.
This song is a profound reminder that one's death can represent more than just loss and uncertainty: it can signal the culmination of a life well lived. I feel this the most as the violin swells at 3:44.
Jeeze, I used to listen to Nickel Creek, but had lost track of Chris until I was googling his wife. It mentioned she married Chris Thile of Punch Brothers... so glad to find out he continued on! Such a talented family.

This is one of those songs I wish never ended.
it sort of doesn't, it is a celtic trefoil knot song, yes
Play on repeat
That's how most of their music is for me too
Like “the blind leaving the blind”. Love that so much.
Have you seen their npr?

I love what you said about this song. I've been thinking about it a lot.
this song puts my baby to sleep every time. It is perfection.
My girl is 3 and I still use it with her
This song is like breathing. It's not noticable but it's needed
Yes.... Breathed valleys exceed hamyards

Marrissa Turner beautiful!
yes -- what a beautiful comment...
I always find myself coming back to this song.
"Julep" may very well be the first time I've ever cried over how beautiful a song is.
I can't stop listening to this song. Seriously. I listen to it on repeat for at least 5+ goes at a time. Everything about it is beautiful. +Pearl S. I'm hooked on it too, this song is medicine for my soul.
I'm right where you were. One of the most beautiful songs I've heard.
I'm hooked. Movement and Location as well.
me too!!!!!
Well, I think I'll cry for eternity now.
I listened to this song a few times in a row, called my husband crying tlling him how much i love him. Great song!
I think this might be one of the most perfect songs ever composed and performed
first time I've heard Punch Brothers and already in love with them.
I saw them yesterday in Zurich, Switzerland live in a church. Great, remarkable unbeliveable. - Thank you very much for making music.
These guys are awesome with these almost diminished sounding chords during melodic breakdowns, or un expected minor notes during a mandolin flourish...very pleasent, very cool.

*Song Lyrics*
I died happy in my sleep
I died happy in my sleep
Our children around and you looking down
Heaven's a julep on the porch
Heaven's a julep on the porch
You and me rocking
A grandfather clock is tick, tick, tocking to time
We used to wind it
She brought the sugar and the mint
She brought the sugar and the mint
And he brought the whiskey
Asked for my blessing
Yes sir I know she's
Heaven's a julep on the porch
Heaven's a julep on the porch
You and me rocking
A grandfather clock is tick, tick, tocking to time
We used to wind it
Got time
We used to wind it
Now the time stands still
We drink our fill
Out of silver
God will never
Tarnish like we will
You were just a girl that I should meet
You were the girl that I would meet
For drinks in the backyard
A beautiful daughter
Lifetimes of summer
And love ever after
I died happy in my sleep
I died happy in my sleep
Our children around and you looking down
Heaven's a julep on the porch
Heaven's a julep on the porch
You and me rocking
A grandfather clock is tick, tick, tick, tick, tocking to time
We used to wind it
Got time
We used to wind it
Oh it's tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tocking to time
We used to wind it

I wholeheartedly agree. I was just thinking this.
The man is a legitimate genius. Punch Bros make some of the greatest music of our time, period.
I agree with you all. And, this song is a masterpiece.
Awesome. I really like how the banjo fits in this. almost haunting. Such textures.
Named our child Julep, and I am grateful for this beautiful song to.inspire the name of another human life. She's just as beautiful as the song!!
Now that time stands still
we can drink our fill
out of silver
that will never
tarnish like we will.
Very wonderful, sobering lyric.
my favorite line
My name is Jullep, and that's how I found this song. I was looking up songs with my name and I'm so happy I found this

The album art and this track is breathtaking
it's a painting by Rene Magritte from 1928, titled The Lovers.
This song is really good any time of the day. But my favorite time to listen to it is when it's Winter. I don't know why, but the feeling of walking around town at night with this song in your ears is just calming to me.
YEAH!!! After a really long time, there is a new real Punch Brothers song, cool and musically outstanding as they've always been!

Never disappointed with y'alls music!
I think the lyric "Lifetime of summer" is brilliant; this song is amazing on a lot of levels. It's minimal instrumentation style is just beautiful
just found out about the wonderfulness of the punchbrothers! awesome music!
One of my favorite Punch tunes!
This is utterly beautiful, and a perfect synopsis of how I want to live... Progressive bluegrass? Defies categorisation, just know this band are doing something important musically and deserve to have a working holiday in New Zealand...
I saw them at horseshoe tavern. my oh my were they good. just lovely.

This song is a profound reminder that one's death can represent more than just loss and uncertainty: it can signal the culmination of a life well lived. I feel this the most as the violin swells at 3:44.
they are so amazing, it blows my mind. HUGE inspiration
I am so stoked about this tour and album!

sometimes I hear a song and just sit there like "wow..." and this is one of those songs

Insanely good. I love it.

Truly beautiful. I wish I had discovered the Punch Brothers earlier.
