    I thought "zichzelf" was the long and complete form of "zich". I was wrong. In fact, "zich" is used with reflexive verbs only. If the verb is not a reflexive verb, we use "zichzelf". Thank you very much for your knowledge, Niels. I understand now.

    Hi Niels and thank you so much for your videos. As a language teacher myself, I congratulate you on your fantastic teaching skills. Coming from a background in teaching French and German, I find one of my biggest stumbling blocks in trying to learn Dutch is its similarities to German because I sometimes forget the subtle differences. For example, I would apply German syntax to the example you cited: Zij heeft zichzelf in haar auto opgesloten. Applying the Time, Manner Place rule and putting the past participle right at the end. I know that's wrong! But would you ever do that in Dutch?

    • @LearnDutchwithNiels
      @LearnDutchwithNiels  6 років тому +1

      Hi Wayne, thanks a lot for your comment! You can safely put the past participle at the end in Dutch too.
      The only type of structure like this that sounds markedly 'German' is putting the participle or infinitive before the conjugated verb in a dependent clause. For example: saying "omdat ik niet gaan wilde" instead of "...wilde gaan". But even that is not incorrect: There are some dialects (my own, for example) where this is quite common.

    Very Nice. PLEASE, make a video teaching how to say places in the city and what PREPOSITION we have to use (AT THE, TO THE), like:
    1. I went TO THE bank, and then I went TO THE supermarket.
    2. I went HOME, and then I went TO work.
    3. I went TO school, and then I went TO THE bakery.
    4. I went TO THE mall, and then I went TO THE beach.

    • @hannahybanez8016
      @hannahybanez8016 5 років тому +3

      I went to the bank - Ik ging naar de bank.
      I went to the supermart- Ik ging naar de supermarkt.
      'Ging' is the past tense of 'go'
      If you want to say:
      I've been to Amsterdam
      In Dutch - Ik ben naar Amsterdam geweest.
      You use "ben" when using "geweest/gegaan"
      Ik ben naar Amsterdam geweest
      Jij/Je/U bent naar Amsterdam geweest
      Zij/hij is naar Amsterdam geweest
      We zijn naar Amsterdam geweest
      Jullie zijn naar Amsterdam geweest
      Zij zijn naar Amsterdam geweest
      Hope this helps 😊

      @@hannahybanez8016 Yes, it helped me. Thank you a lot.
      How would I say?
      1. I went HOME

      3. I am at HOME
      4. I am in Johns's house

    • @hannahybanez8016
      @hannahybanez8016 5 років тому +2

      Língua Viva good 😊
      I went home - Ik ging naar huis
      I went to John's house. Ik ging naar John's huis.
      I am at house/home - Ik ben thuis (at home - is simply "thuis")

    • @hannahybanez8016
      @hannahybanez8016 5 років тому +2

      Língua Viva
      I am at John's house - Ik ben bij John's huis.
      "Bij" is "at"
      But there are also other dutch terms for "at". That will depend on the sentence. In this sentence on saying you're at John's house, you use "bij".

    Hi there. Writing in English this time. I'm learning Dutch in Afrikaans - it is after all a dochtertaal. I watch the videos in English then do my notes in afrikaans. We don't have OVT, except for Moes, sou, wou, kon, and some others, that's why I struggle. It's a strange concept to me. Can't I just say 'Ik heb mezelf in de spiegel gezien' instead of 'Ik zag mezelf in de spiegel'?. ' Ek het myself in die spieël gesien ' is the afrikaans. What is the difference? Is the one more correct than the other?

    • @LearnDutchwithNiels
      @LearnDutchwithNiels  7 років тому

      Hi Charissa, yes, I can see how that's confusing. You can say both, but the meaning is different. I'll make a video about the difference (one day)...
      Two examples:
      When telling a story, or recounting events, or talking about things in the background, you use the OVT. For example, you'd say: "Ik draaide me om, en zag mezelf in de spiegel. Ik schrok van wat ik zag" (schrok = OVT of schrikken)
      When talking about things that have already been finished, or have not been finished yet, you'd use the VTT instead. You also use the VTT for things you've never done, or when saying that you've done them before, without talking about a specific time. Examples: "Ik ben nog nooit in Zuid Afrika geweest". Or: "Heb je jezelf vandaag al in de spiegel gezien? Je haar zit in de knoop!"

    • @LearnDutchwithNiels
      @LearnDutchwithNiels  8 років тому +5

      Hi Luis, that's the 'zich' form from the video, but with inversion of the verb and subject. I'll just give you a few examples to make it clear what's going on:
      zich wassen -> Ik was me, je wast je. If you want to make this into a question, the subject and the verb switch places, so: Was ik me?, Was je je? (=Do you wash yourself?). I know it looks funny, but that's how we say it! Hope that helps.

    • @LearnDutchwithNiels
      @LearnDutchwithNiels  4 роки тому +3

      Dag Igor, correct, maar de tweede zin is 'was je maar eens zelf' (but it sounds a little angry...!), or 'was jezelf maar eens' (which sounds encouraging, or mean, depending on who you are talking to, and your intonation). Word order can make a big difference ;-)

    Hoi Niels, thanks for making these videos and explaining how to use Dutch grammar properly.
    I work for a website (www.stepup.io) that's creating a collection of language learning videos and uses hashtags to create various compilations.
    I was wondering if you would be interested in adding some of your videos to our website? It'll be really helpful for our community of language learners. Let me know if you'd be interested in helping out!

    • @LearnDutchwithNiels
      @LearnDutchwithNiels  10 років тому

      Hi Sofia,
      Thanks for your comment. I like the whole concept of the website, but for my language videos, I don't particularly like the idea of 'cutting out' clips. The whole reason I'm creating these videos is to provide free and complete grammar lessons that can stand alone.
      Good luck with your website though. I'll probably check it out again in the future.

    • @sonyaschmidt6674
      @sonyaschmidt6674 10 років тому

      Learn Dutch with Niels! Hi Niels, thanks for replying and checking out our website. I understand what you mean and I'm really supportive of your project.
      But in our site you actually wouldn't have to cut out any parts of the video, it's more of a tool to divide a video into smaller chapters (so learners can go back and re-watch parts that they struggled with). Also it allows you to add text.
      Here's an example of a different language tutorial on our site, have a look and if you'd be interested in incorporating your videos into this format please let me know.

      bradford Bingleyman You are such a poorly informed know-it-all. First of all, you should know what you're talking about before you decide to criticize someone: He is not saying "ziesj", as you are mistakenly hearing it. The way he says "zich" is a common pronunciation in the south of the Netherlands and literally the only way it is said in Belgium. Second of all, this guy is clearly a native speaker of Dutch. It shows your total stupidity and misguided arrogance if you think you somehow know how to pronounce the language better than a native Dutch speaker.

      dcfreak23 Aha ! Ik vind 't 'm goed doen. Ik ben fifty-fifty Vlaming-Nederlander. Ik geloof niet dat hij een "native speaker" maar wel dat hij een wat Duitse (limburgse) ch klank heeft.
      Verder ben ik bescheiden doordrongen van de iritatie die men in vlaanderen doorgaans heeft als het om "Hollanders" gaat ...

      Ik kom zelf uit Nederlands Limburg, en de manier waarop hij zich zegt is perfect standaard. Op de eerste plaats, spreekt men in Limburg nooit de korte "i" uit als een lange "ie". Dat komt meestal in Vlaanderen voor (en vooral in Antwerpen, Vlaams-Brabant), maar niet in Limburg. Daarnaast spreken we "ch" aan het einde van een lettergreep of woord nooit uit als "sj". Dat geldt niet allen voor AN maar ook voor ons regionaal dialect. Dus, níémand in Nederlands Limburg spreekt "zich" uit als "ziesj". Ik denk dat je te veel luistert naar de stereotype dat wij "kleine Duitsers" zijn en niet genoeg naar hoe hij het woord werkelijk uitspreekt.

      dcfreak23 ,zover was ik nog niet hoor.
      Er zijn regionaal kleine verschillen wat uitspraak van het Nederlands betreft.
      Per land en provincie.
      En die diversiteit uit zich ook wel in mentaliteitsverschillen en soms in kleine irritaties.
      Ik vind het alleen maar heerlijk.
      Ik houd ook van de geschiedis die nog steeds zijn uitlopers heeft binnen de plaatselijke context.

    Why does "in haar auto" go AFTER "opgesloten"? I thought the second verb goes at the end.
