honestly, the idea of a LOTR style arcade beat em up with Frodo riding a Kangaroo as a character certainly deserves points for originality
I concur , I concur 😂 ( Golden Axe & Streets of Rage had a baby ...... )
What Golden Axe 3 should have been. 😩
LEGEND for ps1 is a definition of a hidden gem for me.
It's a s hit. Crisis Beat way better.
Definitely looks like something I'd like.
Man, Crisis Beat just gave me a flood of nostalgia playing it as a kid. There was also another obscure beat em up game I played during that time. I think it was T.r.a.g. it was a weird mix of resident evil style gameplay mixed with Beat em up gameplay.
Trag is basically Anime Die Hard, but with RE puzzles and tank controls
I have a copy of T.R.A.G for the PS1. Not to mention, the game is call Hard Edge in Japan and Europe.
(Sees the beginning of the video) This man right here (sheds a manly tear)....this man right here speaks the freaking truth. Praise the almighty Beat 'em Up video game genre.
Beat em ups are so beautiful and pure I never get tired of them
are you ok? Need a hug?
From what I know Brezzasoft wasn't just comprised of SNK staff but essentially was just SNK under a different name after SNK went bankrupt.
You wouldn't believe how much I appreciate the word "probably" in the title.
There's channels that cover movies with video titles "you never saw this movie" when the truth is, "yeah, I did. Ice-T is awesome. Don't presume to change the reality of my existence!"
So, let's observe some Beat Em Ups that I probably didn't play!
You know something?
You’re weird.
You’re okay. And you’re right. But you’re weird, man.
Beat’em up games are one of my most favourite of genres. Seeing these obscure arcade games just got me intrigued into playing them. Matt McMuscles is the best in showing these lost gems.
I was playing Nekketsu Oyako yesterday on my Saturn. From your game play I can see the little differences between the games. Check out Denjin Makai 1+2 and Undercover Cops. Those are some really good beat'em ups!
Demjij Makai 2 and Undercover Cops are freaking awesome!
I had a toooon of fun with Denjin Makai on SNES. Don't need to know Japanese even a little bit to have a great time.
Something burst inside my chest when you referenced Umemaro 3D.
I was NOT expecting that reference this afternoon.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who had that reaction. I nearly left my body.
Timestamp please?
@@phoenixdouchebag904 Uh…9:07.
Yo big props to the NBA Street VS clip. We all know Mario has the means to dunk hard on everyone.
All the sound effects in The Crystal of Kings sound like you edited them in as a joke, which kind of makes me want to play it on that basis alone. In fact the first three look totally worth checking out for me, while Crisis Beat... kinda looks like if Squaresoft put an optional beat-em-up minigame inside of FF7.
man, i owned Crisibeat on the PS1 and back then, it was the game we played when we couldn't decide what game to play with the cousins around
I appreciate you playing Legend and Crisis Beat, but now we gotta get you to play Lucifer Ring next!
I really dig how the format of these multi-gane videos just screams, "come for the mini reviews/What Happeneds, stay for the entertaining gameplay samples!" 😁
other way around but yeah
Crisis Beat! Yoooooo!
Man, a lot of memories in that one playing it on the PS1 with the cousins!
Very underrated game n I love the love they had for shenmue that they put Ryu in the game.
Those troll soldiers in the first game are pure nightmare fuel
Reminded me of Ao Oni.
Yeah they looks like chinese demons, like that Son Son souls-like game.
@@KKHell Yeah I can see that
Crisis Beat is like a cross between Die Hard and the Titanic. I bought the japanese version years ago for a super cheap price with the spine card and I'm glad to have it in my collection. This 3D beat em' up for the PS1 has an arcade feeling that other PS1 3D beat em' ups don't have.
Love love love the video, obscure beat 'em ups is a genre of media I never realised I needed.
I was obsessed with speedrunning Crisis Beat when I was a kid for some reason, so this made for a delightful rush of nostalgia! From what I recall there were fighting game inputs for different moves, a semi-circle motion would turn Julia Jefferson's takedown into a giant swing I think, so you could make any enemy your CHRISTMAS TREE ADVANTAGE ATTACK!
"Wake up! Stop loafing!"
*Turns into a loaf of bread*
Crisis Beat is toooooo damn short.
As a kid: " Okay, Okay... Here we g... Oh shit, it's already over???"
A series like this with different genres of games would be cool
He did a fighting game video like this before I thought, maybe it already is?
My absolute favorite genre. I just wish we'd get more 3D beat em ups. We've only got a few and unfortunately they were around the brown and gritty era. I want a 3D streets of rage or final fight with all the colorful cities, beaches, amusement parks, malls, etc with a good combat system. The only ones still doing 3D brawlers is sega with the yakuza series (or I guess judgment now) but even those are getting old. Really need something fresh
I have high hopes for The Man Who Erased His Name, but I completely agree. With a bunch of great classics for inspiration and the benefit of hindsite, somebody could make the best 3D brawler of all time. A 3D brawler with the ethos of Streets of Rage would melt so many faces, mannnnn.
21:00 I love how Karo has the Hapsburg chin
Hey Crisis Beat.. one of my first PS1 game that I bought together with the console
Love that Galloping Ghost footage!! Also Riot City is an obscure Sega brawler to try
Didn't expect a "Die By The Sword" reference in a beat 'em up round-up, but I'm all for it.
Wow the mall arcade I went to as a kid totally had a Die Hard arcade machine. I've seen that helicopter intro a million times
Matt, have you ever played Violent Storm? I don't know if it ever got ported anywhere, but it was a really whacky beat 'em up, where you get to turn pigs into footballs, fight animated statues, metalheads and other crazy stuff. I even think one of the bosses is a super hero, with a cape and everything, but I might be thinking of something else entirely.
There is also a game called Growl. It's an arcade game that also got ported to the Genesis. Both versions are somewhat different, and both are pretty neat. You play as a crocodile dundee type dude and his environmentalist friends against a gang of poachers.
Played violent storm on the main channel
Just found this channel!! Subscribed! And beat em ups were the only games I was ever able to beat lol
This helps me to continue my arcade (MAME) Saturday morning tradition. No stress, no searching through guides to help find that last elusive treasure. Just nostalgic fun.
i don't know how i went so long in my life not knowing about the crystal of kings because god it's so up my alley. used to play a lot of gauntlet legends and mystara chronicles back then
I love that the spear is called the knife stick lmao!
@@Gatorade69 I got a feeling it was probably a bad translation however bad translations are the best translations.
Now I want to play Dragon's Crown again. Still the most fun I had with a Beat em Up.
The exaggerated proportions of the characters are a bit unsettling but despite that the art style really is beautiful and the gameplay is really fun I like the leveling system too offering new combos and upgrades to already existing abilities and stats, Dwarf will always be my favorite.
Still remember the fun times I had playing with a friend, me as a knight helicopter of death and him a dwarf that literally flew around the stage bombing the shit outta everything, lmao
That thumbnail, is that Bob from Bob's Burger? The idea of a beat 'em up from that IP... could be golden.
Awesome content, covering Techno Softs Hot Blooded Family ,love it ! Subbed !
Keep it up mate !
Nothing like a Queen of the Harpies reference! Love that bit so much.
In 'Crystal of Kings', elf-girl's name ought to be pronounced more like, "who's-tee- see-ah", which is Spanish for "Justice". In Spanish, the J sounds like an H.
iustitia is the ancient roman goddess of law and justice and justice personified in mythology. In other countries her name can be written as Justitia, Justizia oder even lady Justice. Her name is the reason we have words like judge, just, justice, jurisdiction and so on.
In German, we pronounce her name (I write it how it sounds in Englisch) as
“You -s- thee- zee- ah”
So theres no way to know how the Japanese developers wanted it to be pronounced, without the Katakana.
Have a nice day.
It could also just be Latin. Justicia (the Spanish word), just like justice, is etymologically related to Iustitia (classical Latin doesn't know the "J" letter), Roman goddess of justice and law
@@HeinerGunnar - True. But, as you said yourself, if it were Latin, why would it be spelled w/a "J" instead of an "i"? In otherwords, if it were meant to be Latin, then her name would most likely be spelled "Iusticia", & not "Justicia". Wouldn't it? 🤔
@@Guernicaman Cause that was classical Latin. Medieval Latin (which would fit the game more) does use a J
As a spanish speaking person that's how I read it too. Same goes for Lustro Furia.
11:00 there's a special kind of glee you feel when a hazard in a beat-em-up gives 0 f@cks for who gets flattened, burned, electrocuted to name some favourites 😌👍
I have actually done some research and playing of beatemups which I thought was pretty well-rounded but you've found games I've never heard of. Cool!
Big Black is actually a band. Devs put references to bands they dig in video games so often, it's almost a cliche. Street Fighter 1 has a building that says Blockheads Pub, a reference to the british band Ian Dury and the Blockheads.
The Tick had a beat'em'up you probably never played, and for good reason, I remember it being a slog.
I have great memories of crisis beat! I played it as a kid, so I don't remember much, or if it was any good, but I remember liking it at the time
Hot Blooded Family was the reason I wanted to get the Playstation back in the 90's. Unfortunately I never got to play the game. I'm glad you covered that game.
Thank you for covering my favorites beat em up games
I was 'listen' to your video while doing something else. But then you referencing 'Umemaro3D' at 9:07 and I really have to drop stuff at hands and pay full attention to the video lol.
Speaking as someone super into Character Action and Beat 'Em Ups, if you're looking for relatively obscure Beat 'Em Ups, I would suggest checking out Gekido as it's probably the single best 3D Beat Em Up on the PSX. The only game on the console to really come close to something like Die Hard Arcade/Dynamite Cop imo.
Other random recommendations: Zombie Revenge (Dynamite Cop meets House of the Dead), Demolish Fist, the SNES Sonic Blast Man 2, The Death and Return of Superman, any of the Kenka Banchou games, Tokyo Beat Down, and River City Ransom EX.
I did check out Gekido over on the main channel, as well as Dynamite Cop. Will check out those others though!
@@flophouseplays Didn't know that but glad to hear👍
Note about Demolish Fist: It's a Dimps Atomiswave game (the first Atomiswave game iirc), so the best way to play it is the fan-made Dreamcast port. Can run on real hardware and also stuff like ReDream with basically 0 issues compared to stuff like MAME.
Not all of them are amazing, but these are just ones I never see people talk about. I only know about most of them from just browsing around on ROM sites looking for new stuff to add to my collections, lol.
@@flophouseplays Also, it's more of a character action game than a beat em up, and I'm not sure if you've played it on the main channel, but Rising Zan the Samurai Gunman is something that you absolutely should look into and/or showcase as it's basically the first modern Character Action game (gun & sword, combo system, stylish and over the top cutscenes and characters, etc.) on the PSX, predating DMC by 2 years.
There's definitely a learning curve because of the PSX's clunkiness, but once you get the hang of it it's super fun and also INSANELY impressive to see a studio pull off and basically codify the genre on 32 bit hardware. And there are even a ton of Features that it has that games like DMC wouldn't get until way later (dedicated dodge and parry systems and free cam rather than fixed angles are the most notable for me).
It's a bit of a cult classic among genre fans that can figure out how to play it and also appreciate what it did at a time where the closest things to character action games were still things like Castlevania and regular Beat Em Ups.
Sorry, gush session over. lol.
Overcharging health existed in Dragon's Crown, where eating food from the cooking minigame will give you Extra HP beyond your max value on the next stage, up to 999HP, which is great early on where you still have 100-200 max HP value
Crisis Beat's Lock On Counter is basically a stage hazard attack, basically hit an enemy near a hazard object to trigger it, similar to Heat Actions from Yakuza games, its just very fickle in terms of activation compared to the later
I was trying to remember what the title was for Crisis Beat. I've been trying to look for it for a while. Good times. Good times.
aha! i've still got one of them: crisis beat! ^^it was fun to play back then.
I hope you look at Fight'N Rage someday! That one's awesome
Haha have to say Legend looks pretty fun, got me wanting to play it. Superb video as always man, love the content
damn i spend a lot of time playing Legend on the snes, didn't knew it had a remake on the ps1. i might have to check that out now, thnx for showing me that :O
Wow, I just played Crisis Beat this weekend. It is a rough game, but I have to admit it is that kind of game that my 12-year old self would love and replay to death. Back at the PS1 era, I really didn't have a chance to play it and I was sad there were so few beat'em ups. I really liked the game's cheesiness and how it feels like a mix between Die Hard (Christmas setting, terrorists, kidnapping) and Metal Gear. The fact that the campaigns are differente depending on the character you choose is also pretty cool.
Oh shit you discovered that beat em up i have forgotten about and wanted to replay again
Crisis beat that is
I knew that the Legend PS1 was oddly familiar, than you said that the same folks made Soul Fighter.
But anyhow, 3/4 is good for me in terms of knowledge. I played The Crystal of Kings, knew about HOT BLOODED FAMILY, and somehow, an obscure memory of Crisis Beat erupted in my mind of playing this game sometime in the early 2000's.
Nothing really to say, but I enjoyed this video. Thanks for making and sharing it.
Love beat 'em ups! My fave genre.
I share your love for Beatem ups, mr. Mcmuscles, god bless you!
@Flophouse Plays, The Simpsons Arcade (Japanese Version) was the first brawler to let you overcharge your health. HBF being the second, and Dynamite Deka 1/Die Hard Arcade being the third.
I may be wrong, but I think there was a demo for that version of Legend in the french version of PlayStation Magazine.
I remember that sound of "fight fight", and never bought that game.
Good findings sir, Nice video indeed.
I had a beat'em up 3d game stuck in my brain. I used to play it when I was like, 5 on my PS1. It's been Soo long it felt more like a dream than a real experience. And then I see it here, Crisis Beat. I remember the butler looking fella only hits with his feet. Maybe I'm thinking of Thrill Kill (I did have a bootleg Thrill Killl copy, after all) Idk, but I did play this when I was little.
One game that is a beat-em-up hybrid is Brok the Investigator. It combines beat-em-ups with adventure games in mechanics. I want to see if it does good like chocolate with peanut butter or if it's not so good.
You're right, I haven't played these. But I have seen most of them over on the Fight Palace.
Taka with the anti-air throw! Bringing it back.
Is Legend made by the same folks behind Soul Fighter on the Dreamcast? I can see and hear a resemblance.
The health overcharge in Hot Blooded Family reminds me of the food system in Dragon’s Crown, wonder if they were inspired by it.
I wasn't expecting Matt to ever reference Umemaru 3D 😅
watching this makes me want to watch you and Liam play Dragon’s Crown I feel like it would be a hoot
Ah legend, it was out in Australia too, a lot of fun when you’re 12
In Legend, it's really funny that our hero reaches down with his hand holding the weapon to pick things up.
There's a Fantastic Four beat em up game on PS1 which up to 4 players can play, or you can also have ai as teammates.
I think I know what happened at the end of Crystal of Kings. You killed one of the smaller guys that where riding the ogre, but you just pushed the other one to fall off the cliff with a small fraction of health, and I think it didn't registered that he had fallen, so he ended up down there still alive and out of your reach. And if that's a recurring glitch specific for that area I don't know because I didn't played this game, but the situation look like a glitch to me.
Finally you played Crisis Beat. 😃
@ 5:21, my first thought was of Jawbreaker from Double Dragon V lol
Wow. Hidden Invasion. Wasn't expecting that to ever be mentioned anywhere. Played it once or twice with a friend when we were on a PS2 bargain bin kick. Conspiracy Entertainment ended up being one of our favorite publishers found out of it. A big recommendation for anyone interested: Stretch Panic on the PS2. It's developed by Treasure (hey those guys made Wario World and Gunstar Heroes!), and it really is the definition of a "gem" on the PS2. Anyways, thanks for these videos. It keeps people like me who love to find some underappreciated games super entertained.
Hey @flophouseplays or Matt did you say that hotblooded family was for playstation and sega saturn. I was wondering if I could get the game working through emulation but I might need to look some stuff up about that hopefully that game can be played on the PC.
56:25 Matt being possessed by Leonardo Di Caprio for a second there
That "Malcolm in the middle" comment is one of the greatest, and most accurate things anyone has ever said to describe anything.
I remember playing The Crystal of Kings at a bowling alley! Very good
I have "hot blooded family" on my PSP right now. Its there mostly because it only takes up like 20mb of space. Decent game
I like this video. I never know this beat 'em up games.
MORE please!
20:36 "Choose your Wario!"
Appreciated.
You also have Panzer Bandit on PSone and Legend and also Mad Stalker
I already liked your content, but then you drop that Umemaro 3D bit.
You are also a man of culture, and I respect you much more for it. Yes sir.
matt you cant just hit me with umemaro 3d outta the blue like that man
Thanks for the info Matt and credits to Mr Din for sharing link to this video. I've played Crystal of Kings years ago, my friend in forum told me about it. It was fun and has unique features such as evil path by beating trophy of no1 in the game. Too bad the final boss was ridiculously too large to fit the screen making the battle kinda cheap.
I've also played and completed Legend and Iron Commando before. TBH the game's difficulty comes mostly from enemy's AI and player's lack of abilities compared to SoR series. It was not fun playing Legend and cheat really helped. Iron Commando is better but not much.
I've heard Crisis Beat before but haven't got chance to play it. But Hot Blooded Family is new and never heard before. Somehow it reminds me to Ninja Baseball Batman (arcade).
While the video title definitely lived up to its name for me, I can't help but wish you'd covered something truly batshit like Denjin Makai 2, if only to see you react to the constant insanity happening on-screen. It's also a good mid-generation beat 'em up in general, with some fairly robust movesets for most of the characters, similar to the likes of Lin of Alien Vs. Predator fame.
If you ever do a similar video in the future, definitely put it on your list; I can't imagine it won't get a laugh out of you every couple of minutes.
Crisis beat... WAS FUQING GREAT!!
'Eliminator of Iron' is my new band name.
Yo Crisis Beat was my thing back in the day it was my very 1st 3D Beat em up too... Good times!
Not beat em up related but Matt if you ever get And 1 basketball on the ps2 take out the disc after doing a slam dunk you will thank me later.
Amazing video. I'd love to see Guardian Heroes covered.
Crisis Beat is one of my jam. It's better to start out as either Kenneth or Yan H Feisui. Kenneth is all about damage and power while Yan is about speed and Cracking up Extra Life.
That whale stage in hot blooded family makes me want a lovecraftian beat'em up
I’m such a sucker for pre-rendered sprites. I love how silly the first game looks. I would easily purchase an Arcade Archives re-release.
Finally someone speaks up about Crisis Beat! Doing the Lord's work!
eiji looks so much like Ryo from Shenmue, they practically lifted the model, one super weird beat em up for the super famicom I feel is Birume Sentai Barayarou apparently some of the people that worked on sexy parodius worked on it.
Lustro is like gigachad Tidus
