i saw the new skyline driving on the road the other day...... it was the most amazing thing i have ever seen.. and when he cranked up the engine it sounded amazing
My company had to ship the GT-R up north on a open trailer car hauler and on the way up a chain fell and broke the back windshield. I almost cried when I saw that happen to this beatiful piece of art. It's a really nice car.
It is an incredible engineering exercise, it's quick, stable, it has lot of grip, the engine is great but, when it's time to pick a car for hot laps, we literally run to the Posches to rest out helmet on the rooftop first! Great review Chris
the acr comes with a adjustable suspension u can adjust for whatever track u want watch the bonneville flats vid about the acr they adjust the suspension for the flats
Just watched a few of Chris's vids and I have to say, that you are THE MAN ! Excellent proper driving and analysis. Really worth watching. That GTR is a bit of a motor then !!!!!! Top Gear PLEASE NOTE.
I had an old ivory white mini metro. I hit a concrete bollard when I was out of it years ago and wrote it off. After that I bought a classic beetle M reg 73. The piston exploded through the casing in Barnet High Road and wrote the car off. Then I bought a 94 Java Blue Mondeo. The head gasket blew up on the A1 near Buckden.
His driving skill might not be up to your standards, but it is still far better than most any other automotive journalist I've seen. I'm not seeing him carry a bad line in this video, rather struggling with traction on the tires of the M3.
**There aren't enough superlatives to describe this car! I was just about to buy a Porsche when my friends, ages 26 and 22, nagged me to look at the GTR. I did, and after a once-over and test drive, I was hooked. This car is FAST! The all-wheel drive and performance modes make for superb handling. I have not encountered a car that will challenge it, including Ferraris, Corvettes, Vipers, Lambos and Porsches. Frankly speaking, this is the BEST car I've ever owned so I love it with deep passion XD
its not a skyline, unfortunately too. the V35 skyline has been around for quite a few years, the new GTR takes on a whole different setup and chassis to the V35, it is quite simply not a skyline, it was created seperately.
great quote from this guy about the GT-R - "It cheats the laws of physics" Although he made some mistakes, he admitted them outright - and i quite enjoyed his commentary during the runs. Don't see that on a lot of test drivers. makes you feel like your there.
@JellyBird12 what your introducing is an souped up and race car like already built off of m3, so its not stock basically. Its like saleen with the mustang.
@Janusha I totally agree with you. Porsche brought a gtr to the nurburgring and they couldn't get it under 7:45 (stock) The times should have the specs of the cars so it is even and true data.
@CJAEY What kind of engine was in the 928???? a V8 I think, and a very good one, the one in the Cayenne (and in the Panamera of course, another car from Porsche no???) is also a great engine.....Porsche has also use 4L, Flat4, Flat12 because they know to built something else, other than F6.....
The GTR has a dual clutch. VW/Audi's DSG is one of first and is the most renowned dual clutch transmissions in the world. Therefore, a lot of people inadvertently refer to dual clutch transmissions as being a DSG when they really mean "It's like that fancy transmission you can buy in a GTI."
I just bought a Nissan GT-R and it;d awesome. unbelievable grip and performance. I thought I would like the GT3 better as more tossable and lighter but it's $45k more. The GT-R feels like a 2300 lb car with 400 HP. It's unbelievable fun.
True, although Porsche were the first to ever design a twin-clutch transmission. VW have also begun using combined super & turbo charged motors, which is something Lancia first attempted back in the '80s. VAG have a talent for taking old unsuccessful tech, remaking it with modern design principles and making it successful.
i don't know if this has been posted yet, but that's not a skyline. it is the successor to it, but not a part of that line. the newest skyline is the infiniti g35. it does retain the name R35, however, keeping in line with the R3X naming scheme used for the skyline.
This is a great video - filled with skills and passion. Thanks for sharing this with us! I thought the driver was great. It's amazing to see how well the GT-R is handling compared to the Porsche. I went to a Nissan dealer today (California). They had two cars at $73K + 20K premium - one of them was already sold. I wonder if this is going to last or if we're going to see offers at regular MSRP in early 09?
@suzukiaddress125 True, valid points. But remember this comparo was shot 3 yrs ago when most didn't know if were still going to be a SKyline GTR or confirmed later, just the GTR
@Silverdeamon92 True. People are used to it. But the thing is that there are "Skyline"(both coupe and sedan) still sold in Japan. If someone call R35 as "Skyline GTR", there might be slight chance of misunderstanding about R35 as if it is the more powerful, faster version of Skyline, which is not. (not anymore.only till R34). I just thought the media should clearly state that R35 GTR isn't faster version of Skyline. It's completely new design with new mechanisms.
All three are fast cars, if you remember, the driver talked about the porsche being able to go a little bit quicker and so on. And by the 3rd time you go around a track, you know what to look for, but I have only seen him on this vid, maybe hes done more on that track, anyway! So basically it is up to the driver to win, theyre both pretty much in the same time range. good vid!
yeah, i was at a Nissan dealer today, they had one for 89k. Its one dam good car... the guy said that they've imported less then 300 of them so far... If you have the money, its well worth it.
This bloke knows what he's talking about, and can drive properly. Personally, i'd go for a V-Spec II if I could afford it and if they make it. I really hope they make a real stripped out GT-R.
what you said there about it going around the corners is why people prefer the LFA over the GT-R, it feels more alive through the corners, too bad most fans ONLY focus on acceleration to 60mph
@Birmo08030 the car wasn't for sale when this review was made.... and the full version name wasn't well known yet! So, it was a kind of skyline successor in line....
Yea I can agree with that The Michelin PS2 are great track/autocross type tires but they have horrible grip until they warm up which takes a while. I think Bridgestone's are best have them on my Z4 RE050A great grip quick warm up and good tire life kind of expensive though
as for the coding, the GTR does actually use the R35 chassis code, which is quite stupid, if anything the R chassis code should have stayed with the Skyline range and the V or something else should have been for the GTR, if you go back to where the R code was first used, it was for the skyline, not the GTR.
The reason why the 911 has been a successful car is not only because of it's blistering performance but most importantly the joy it brings. The Nissan with it's AWD and electronics doesn't offer the same freedom and driving joy as the GT3. It's not just about getting from A to B quickly, but also having fun on the way.
if zr1 and viper are "straight line cars" what do you think about the camaro? if you own a 350z, what job do you currently have? and how much does it pay you?
He went on an out lap the first time to heat up the Michelin Pilot cup tires, which have horrible grip when they're cold, and it was 2 degrees that day. I'm guessing the GT-R's Bridgestones are more road oriented than track oriented so maybe they worked better right away
@latbeast mate, Mercedes AMG C63 has 6.3L V8 too and I don't hear people saying they got big engines. Give credits where credits due, the ZR1 is a Supercar and the LS9 S/C engine is awesome.
well, it still does carry the R35 part of the name sort of on the chassis code, the chassis code being CBA-R35, or 'R35' for short. R35 not being in the name, but being in the chassis code
That's exactly what i said in my first comment: The new GT-R is a successor. i know what you're saying but the GT-R has more in common with the old R-34 than the G35. A lot of people call the R35 the NEW skyline. Nissan might not want it to be called the new Skyline, but everyone else is calling it that because the two have so many similarities. It doesn't matter anyway, skyline, or not. It's still an amazing car and blows ANYTHING out of the water.
@latbeast ZR1 is plastic for lightness and so its affordable which is the whole point of a corvette and they actually did use a smaller v8 then the Z06 then they supercharged it for more power and it still beats a lot of supercars that are twice the price so think what you want but ZR1is a great car.
but just because it's more slcaky in stock form doesn't mean it doesn't have performance potential. it uses the same engine as the Z and you know Z preformes very well. So a few tweaks can be completely different
They call it the Skyline because most motoring journalists still see it as a Skyline. Look closely and you'll see the similarties between the GTR and the Skyline, there are far too many, both cars are basically playstations with wheels. Just to clarify, it IS the R35!
As written, TC and all the rest are always off. You cannot help a big front engine to be lazy entering corners. It's just physics. We all dont like understeer and the GT-R, despite of having good grip mid corner, just takes longer to find the line. It's a great road car. (take a mid engine car like a 458 and it shows how faster it is entering bends) On the track, you need patience. And we dont find any excitement when pushing. Race cars are a totally different story
i know which i would by the bmw they are so much fun to drive m3 or 325i never driven a porsche driven a skyline for 10 mins did not like it was an r33 id love to try a r8 see if it is as good as they say it is
because ur wrong, it's not called a skyline because it's not a skyline. the only reason previous GTR's were skylines were they were based off the skyline chassis and were very similar in most areas. the new GTR is a completely different car from the V35 Skyline, it was build from the ground up, not a tweaked skyline like the rest of the GTR's. you are wrong.

@NakedSnakeBlGBOSS I'd love to dig that up but I am on my phone and youtube doesnt allow links... Not just launch control, but VDC, racing on a track or dedicated racing surfaces iirc, and driving when outdoors is lower than -2 deg. celsius (I don't think the last one is true)
Thanks for the measured response Deathwail, it makes a change from the obscenities that usually fly about. What I object to are those who drool over cars like this, then race ordinary cars & clapped out heaps of junk on public roads in misguided attempts to prove that they are somehow as good as trained racing drivers. They're not; they're dangerous. It happens here in the UK, in the US, everywhere there are cars. I don't want my kids to die under their wheels. Arrogance kills -- that's all.
Gotta hand it to the Japanese. They've been doing their homework on performance cars, and now the GT-R is a very serious competitor. The ZR1 killed it in a different test, but the GT-R is very impressive
If you read the article, you know that the track was wet, and despite this, the RWD GT2 won versus a AWD car....and at the end, the GTR brakes were out of order, the GT2 ones were OK so what is odd? That eveybody thinks the R35 is the best on Earth, answer is yes!
@JellyBird12 no of coarse not. The point is that all the car companies lie about the ring. Oh and FYI The Nissan GTR wasn't driven by a Porsche test driver it, was driven by one of the Nuremberg ring professional drivers and same with the Porsche to make it unbiased .. I am not saying Porsche doesn't lol they do and everyone does. It was just an example :)
@XR4turbo what's the point of an engine which last a very long time when the rest of the car is made of plastic parts which falls apart (the roof, the top of the dashboard......) and for the V8 BMW, they last at least 300000kms with a much more better fuel efficiency (even if you think the exact opposite!!!), but you can also talk about V8 from Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, Aston.......also great examples from Brand which don't go to the Bankrupt.......
compare to other race drivers. of course any body would know bad track conditions will affect lap times, its common sense. and I am also saying a good race driver will adjust the racing line he uses depend on the condition of the track. get it?
i saw the new skyline driving on the road the other day...... it was the most amazing thing i have ever seen.. and when he cranked up the engine it sounded amazing
My company had to ship the GT-R up north on a open trailer car hauler and on the way up a chain fell and broke the back windshield. I almost cried when I saw that happen to this beatiful piece of art. It's a really nice car.
first autocar vid i've seen - outstanding job all around! Honestly I like how Chris gives serious play by play. well done.
I love CH, he is such a character and makes every video a joy to watch. I almost forget about the car for his commentary, great job!
It is an incredible engineering exercise, it's quick, stable, it has lot of grip, the engine is great but, when it's time to pick a car for hot laps, we literally run to the Posches to rest out helmet on the rooftop first! Great review Chris
haven't read any of the comments, but this was a very interesting, detailed review. many useful comments from the driver. nicely done!
Chris Harris = One hell of a driver and a great motor journalist with a good sense of humor..Big Up!
I like this guy b/c he knows his stuff and doesn't talk in all the hollow platitudes that the guys from Top Gear do.
the acr comes with a adjustable suspension u can adjust for whatever track u want watch the bonneville flats vid about the acr they adjust the suspension for the flats
Just watched a few of Chris's vids and I have to say, that you are THE MAN !
Excellent proper driving and analysis. Really worth watching. That GTR is a bit of a motor then !!!!!!

They did!
good test!!

I was thinking the same thing as I as watching this, a real dude who just loves cars and tells it like it is.
**There aren't enough superlatives to describe this car! I was just about to buy a Porsche when my friends, ages 26 and 22, nagged me to look at the GTR. I really like this guy's car comparisons. Great show!
I love the flat six in the porsche. Whether it's in the racing version or the road version it sounds badass.
great quote from this guy about the GT-R - "It cheats the laws of physics"
Although he made some mistakes, he admitted them outright - and i quite enjoyed his commentary during the runs. Don't see that on a lot of test drivers. makes you feel like your there.
The GTR is incredible. A proper sports car! No messing around. It gives you what you want - speed and power for a fraction of the cost

I did mate,I smoked it!! My civic is a beast! 440bhp! Ad Porsche turbos over aswell, I leave em all in my dust man
@mariyuso yes probably because the bmw m3 has a bigger engine and more cylinders. Dont the 1 and 3 series have turbos?
I just bought a Nissan GT-R and it;d awesome. unbelievable grip and performance. I thought I would like the GT3 better as more tossable and lighter but it's $45k more. The GT-R feels like a 2300 lb car with 400 HP. It's unbelievable fun.

I have three cars, an Aston Martin V8 Vantage, a Ferrari F40, and a Volvo C30 T5 as a daily drive.
Great to see the return of the Japanese sportscar. I can't wait to see the next generation Supra and NSX.
i don't know if this has been posted yet, but that's not a skyline. it is the successor to it, but not a part of that line. the newest skyline is the infiniti g35. it does retain the name R35, however, keeping in line with the R3X naming scheme used for the skyline.
The legend keep on going. 997 busted by the R35 7 years ago happens again to the 991. GTR proved to be fast.
no, if u use the launch control it says that, doesnt keep track of ur acceleration and stuff like that
This is a great video - filled with skills and passion. Thanks for sharing this with us!
I thought the driver was great.
It's amazing to see how well the GT-R is handling compared to the Porsche.

agree about that, ford recently set a time of 7:22 with their 1 litre eco-boost engine
@Birmo08030 the car wasn't for sale when this review was made.... and the full version name wasn't well known yet! So, it was a kind of skyline successor in line....
@Miike92
FYI, the M3 is NA, if you know what that means. Of course it can't compare to two turbocharged cars.
Yea I can agree with that

Good job mate, on the ranks of a young Jeremy or Tiff, keep up the good work. And tell us why you think the Porche is better
R35 isn't a Skyline. For me it isn't even a Godzilla. It's simply R35 GT-R, and it's amazing.
Nürburgring (Nordschleife) lap times.
7:20 Renault Clio Trophy

@latbeast ZR1 is plastic for lightness and so its affordable which is the whole point of a corvette and they actually did use a smaller v8 then the Z06 then they supercharged it for more power and it still beats a lot of supercars that are twice the price so think what you want but ZR1is a great car.
Personally rate this guy above the Topgear crew for genuine critical evaluation.
but just because it's more slcaky in stock form doesn't mean it doesn't have performance potential. it uses the same engine as the Z and you know Z preformes very well. So a few tweaks can be completely different
We gotta factor in that the driver is more comfortable after all the laps with the first two cars. Though, damn, that GTR is looking good!
No I'm pretty sure marketing name is quite fine. And VW were the first to mass produce dual clutch transmissions for road cars.
to be a little more accurate, its a borg-warner vendored double clutch unit. it is not entirely VW's
@JellyBird12 i searched them up in the nurburgring times and they were in a special category called race cars
It certainly is a Skyline. Car and Driver had an article about it like a year ago.
They call it the Skyline because most motoring journalists still see it as a Skyline. Look closely and you'll see the similarties between the GTR and the Skyline, there are far too many, both cars are basically playstations with wheels. Just to clarify, it IS the R35!
All three are nice! I can't believe my favorite lost though =(
As written, TC and all the rest are always off. Race cars are a totally different story

you are wrong.
R34 Skyline. But can u find any decals, mark or ANYTHING in GT-R R35 that says it's Skyline? Do u still call Nissan as Datsun since it was Datsun?
Sure the roots are there but the GTR has a completely new V6 powerplant whereas the Skyline ran a straight six. Both awesome cars! I'd drive either if I could get my hands on 'em
the 2007-present Nissan GT-R is assembled in
Tochigi, Tochigi, Japan
@mariyuso , well, there is the 335i for example!
what about the GT2? or the GT1? do they not make those anymore?
sailorenlil is completely correct. The R35 is not a Skyline. It's simply known as the R35 GTR.
nice commentary while driving. made it interesting
@mariyuso its not the fact that its turbocharged cars, its the fact that they are way outta m3's level performance wise.
I have 3 skylines and it still blows my mind...
can u tell me what the difference is between the skyline and the gtr ?
no, but now i know why he is not racing anymore. i didnt heard him said about the weather, i was paying too much attention to the car itself. btw a good race driver no matter what the condition is he'll know how to adjust to the condition.
1.-copy and paste
2.-paste it in 2 different videos
3.. hold breath for 10 secs
4.- look at your hand
@NakedSnakeBlGBOSS
I'd love to dig that up but I am on my phone and youtube doesnt allow links...
Not just launch control, but VDC, racing on a track or dedicated racing surfaces iirc, and driving when outdoors is lower than -2 deg. celsius (I don't think the last one is true)
Thanks for the measured response Deathwail, it makes a change from the obscenities that usually fly about. Yeah I do! went in debt to get it in this economy. They are discounting them though $5k off MSRP on a 2010 and lots of 2009s left over
wat dose he mean they wont b on sale for another year ive already seen at least 4 OTR
The Porsche is legal too (only the RSR is not...), but the R35 brakes actually fades quite quickly, thanks to 1800Kgs...
@Miike92
Only the diesels have turbos, BMW doesn't make turbocharged petrol cars. -.-
@yogaexe yes your right Nissan dont call it a skyline no more its gtr r35 now but its still a skyline right
the infinity g35, 37 is the skyline, go to Japanese nissan site and check it out
Gotta hand it to the Japanese. They've been doing their homework on performance cars, and now the GT-R is a very serious competitor. The ZR1 killed it in a different test, but the GT-R is very impressive

He said it: Nissan is 0.3 secs faster than the 911... Even while the japanese one is much heavier!!! That car is just astonishing
@XR4turbo what's the point of an engine which last a very long time when the rest of the car is made of plastic parts which falls apart (the roof, the top of the dashboard......) and for the V8 BMW, they last at least 300000kms with a much more better fuel efficiency (even if you think the exact opposite!!!), but you can also talk about V8 from Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, Aston.......also great examples from Brand which don't go to the Bankrupt.......
compare to other race drivers. of course any body would know bad track conditions will affect lap times, its common sense. and I am also saying a good race driver will adjust the racing line he uses depend on the condition of the track. get it?
This car is the GOD of tuners and exotic cars for that matter!!
@JellyBird12 yes they are, stats and track times prove it
