Fighting with my cheap Infrared Heating - Conclusion after the winter months: This is Junk.

  • I bought an infrared panel heater for my home office. I could have saved the money: At least for 170€ you don't seem to get really good products. The manufacturer claims a 1000W variant would be suitable for 12-24 square meters. Never, ever. The heater radiates heat only in the close range, otherwise it remains cold. Since the air is not heated directly, I also wonder how to control such a heater with a thermostat that measures the air temperature. Kind of, it's not the real deal - although manufacturers of course tout the infrared heating savior. #infraredheating #infrared #heating #smarthome

@@brianharper8304 I'm taping some lampshades with aluminum-foil from the inside: that should focus the infrared light in the desired direction. I hope to get a comfortable mode of operation at my desk with a heating budget of 100W (as opposed to this guys' 1000W). I just think that these infrared panels follow the same principle as infrared bulbs (heating the panel until such a temperature where its blackbody radiation is in the infrared) except that you have to spend that energy to get an entire plate up to the right temperature in stead of just 'one point'.

It has four heat settings and unless the weather is very cold, i rarely use anything above the first setting. It’s great if you have a cold draughty house as it heats you directly and not the air. I’ve noticed panels vary tremendously on price, so I’m wondering if the one you purchased is not a good quality one.

This devices emit infrared light that we can't see but acts on the same principles (inverse square law) so the closest you are from the source the quickest the fall of of the light/heat you will have. So I think you misunderstood the way they are supposed to work. They can heat you but from a sufficient distance so you are heated equally, but also they are intended to heat the objects and floor of the room. That is not going to happen instantly, so maybe that's not what you wanted. They will heat the objects and after some time the objects will heat the air of the room and after that a thermostat would be an option (thermostats detect air temperature, you was trying to use the wrong way trying to detect the direct heat of the infrared emitter). Please reconsider the theory behind the infrared heaters and maybe you will like them once you understand how they are supposed to work.

    • @RazagalArtanis

      Exactly this.
Many people don't appreciate that central heating in homes is designed to heat the structure and the air becoming warm is a loss of efficiency.
The Infra read heaters are incredibly efficient had heating objects first, which then radiate the heat into the room. If you choose an underpowered Infrared system it will never be able to heat anything.

      No.
Air humidity is kept the same and that's one of the main points in using infrared.
Anything that doesn't use infrared, as far as I know, will work by heating the air by expressive amounts and that will in turn mean dryer air.
Infrared will only change the temperature of the wood, nothing else (practically speaking).

To have made this work a bit better, and use it as more of a small area heater, it would have needed to be on a stand, about 1m in front of the desk, towards the camera, and with the centre at the same height as the desk, so it could heat equally above and below the desk. It might have been necessary to leave it on for 30 minutes before using the room, so the wall behind the desk got warmed up as well.
If that wasn’t convenient regarding the camera position, then the heater could alternatively have been set at 30 to 45 degrees angle from the desk, near the box files on the left of the picture, and it might have worked nearly the same. Some of them do have optional stands or castors, as not everyone wants to mount them on walls or ceilings. The cheaper panels may not have those options, unfortunately.
(It’s my Physics background that would suggest trying those variations, where possible.)

Mine has a thermostat and it was below freezing on Saturday. The heating panel struggled to get past 21C. Which sounds warm but my walls were so cold I was still chilled even will several layers on. I have a 1200w ceiling mounted. It has a suspension system where I can adjust the highlight so the only thing I can think of is to lower it down more closer to me. Maybe it's just too high and the rays aren't reaching me enough? They work very differently to conventional heating and so it might take time finding the best place to put it. Also for a room your size it might be a bit low wattage?

It would help your review -and your heating situation- if you understood how infrared radiation heater panels work, which you obviously do not. Your panel is too small and I doubt that the one you have is actually 1000W as it looks physically too small. The most efficient placement for your single panel would be on the ceiling above you and your desk. It would then heat you more uniformly but also gently warm your desk which would in turn radiate the heat also.
Infrared is blocked from travelling by obstacles in its ‘line of sight’ such as the chair you are sitting on. Your LHS blocks heat directly warming to your RHS, when the panel is positioned as per your review. Infrared does not heat air, it heats the surfaces it sees directly, which is why it is far more efficient than convection heating, which wastes 95% of it’s energy heating the air in your entire room, while your brick and stone walls absorb it, thus taking forever to warm up the room and constantly needing to feed your walls with energy.
Your biggest problem is the extremely poorly insulated room, it’s a heat sink. Solve that and you solve your heating issue. You are currently urinating into the sea and complaining that you can’t form a warm pool :)

Well, once again: If a supplier tells a customer, that his product is sufficient for his room size, but then obviously isn't, I think it's quite OK, to give it a bad review. You are right, it seems to be too small sized - but supplier advertised it as OK. So not my fault.
I also had it mounted to the ceiling. Didn't work either. First then I tried placing it behind me or on my left.

    • @airsoftworldltd6846

@@PixelfriedhofTutorials I think you may have purchased a faulty or ‘cheap Chinese’ made panel. I was going to say this in my first comment but thought I had already said too much :)
I have bought multiples of the same panel/same brand from a Electrical Trade Wholesaler in the UK some time ago. Almost every one proved to have a different performance. Only one of these panels actually worked ‘as advertised’. They were supposed to be ‘Made in the U.K.’ but after I investigated further, they were in fact made from Chinese sourced kit parts and assembled in the UK.
The best company I found was an Austrian manufacturer, who I am sure truly designed and manufactured their panel brand in Austria. They were very good but expensive - and I cannot seem to find them now!
Regarding your panel size for the room we see in your review; there is no way possible to heat that size and construction of room from this single panel you had. It would take at least 4 panels, maybe 6. However, the cost for buying and running this many would not be economical and therefore a better means of heating this room should be used. A partition wall, cheaply made from upcycled materials would help your situation with the intention of only heating the desk/office end of the room. No matter what heat you use, if your only source of heating is concentrated in the ‘office end’ of this room, it will always distribute the heat into the total room space and seriously lower your overall comfort level. Ideally, you really need to insulate the brick/stone walls and ceiling from the air in the room, which will never stop it’s first job; trying to heat them up to room temperature. However, I would guess by now that you have already decided to use your dining room table as your office and have given up on the idea of trying to heat this ‘terrace’ :) Best wishes for whatever you decide to do!

I have a home office and I used my 2KW fan heater to heat the approx 12m squared room. The problem is, that electricity prices in the last few years have become very expensive. I found the most efficient way of heating a small office is to buy a low powered infrared panel (mine is 350W) and put that under and at the back of the desk that I'm working at. That keeps me pretty warm for most of the day and costs just under 10p an hour at the time of writing (about 80p per day). On colder days, I'll run the 2KW fan heater for about 30 minutes to bring the room up to temperature, then the infrared heater does just enough to keep it at that temperature. So a combination of using a powerful heater for a small amount of time and then a low powered one to keep that heat ticking over seems to be the most cost effective way of heating a small office.

See the IR panel as the sun. If you sit in the sun the one in your shade does not receive sunlight (IR light) that's the reason why you are cold on the other side of your body when positioned to close to the IR panel.
Than, the IR panel needs time to warm-up the surrounding objects and you, like the sun needs time to warm up things.

For that sized room you need 2 or even 3 panels to heat it effectively.
Also those windows don't help as infrared goes straight through glass and those windows are huge.
That will never work in a room that large with one heater.
If you are heated but the rest of the room is not the heat radiating from you upwards will pull in cold air from the rest of the unheated room causing a cold upwash.
You need to heat the rest of that room.
If you want to use a small under desk heater make sure it's in a relatively small room or make sure the only place the heat can escape is past your body.

Bless you, you have to appreciate the principle of infrared heaters. They heat by heating the walls or floors of a room. They are not meant to directly heat humans. The one close to your left side will of course turn you into a roast 😊. My suggestion, if you haven’t already sold your IR heater, is to move it on the opposite wall (your right side) and raise it so it is above your head in seated position. Turn it on an hour before you start in your room. It will heat up your left side wall and the wall will radiate heat (like it does on a hot summer evening long after the sun is set).

I have a love hate relationship with the infrared. I bought one for my living room cuz it's colder by the windows. It works as a supplement to my furnace. It helps maintain the warmth in the room but it has to run all day and it wont heat a big room unless it's filled with stuff. It said it can heat up to 1000 sq ft but idk about that. It cant warm the air. I think my oil filled radiator works better and I like that its silent. Ceramic fan forced is best for quick heat though.

I bought a 400W panel and installed it in my workplace, I have to be in a 3m radius. The effect is quite strange and not comparable with a room heater. (Oh, you need good insulation, any draft will totally negate the effect). But once you get used to it, it´s quite comfortable. My central heater broke down and through lockdown there is no one to repair it and this is day two, it´s december, coldest month of the year and today it is 2 degrees Celsius, the winter is setting in... I am quite happy with my infrared heater panel now :) It doesn´t heat the room (much) but it´s lovely to have a place to be warm, for instance to wash with the water I heated for that purpose..
The house, which was built in 1910, but completely insulated to beyond modern standards) maintains a temperature of about 10-12 degrees, just from being well insulated and me heating it up by cooking, using the fridge, washing machine etc. I have around 60m2 and 180m3, so high ceilings and I am starting to wonder if I actually need central heating or if it is even a logical choice.
I just bought a second panel, so... I don´t know what you are talking about. I guess it´s a matter of expectations or you are not in a well insulated room. Or maybe you bought a really, really cheap panel, mine was about 200,- euro´s for 400 watts (Eurom / mon soleil verre). It has a built in thermostat, that measures the air above the panel. I keep it at 21 degrees, that stops my hands from freezing and with a sweater and some long underpants, I am quite comfortable. :) I am curious how it will hold up, though when we start getting below zero, which will be next week..

@@PixelfriedhofTutorials That's where I messed up, I never considered the solar panels or battery wall. My workshop with all electronics and two computers running uses 330watts per hour. Today the workshop is pushing that to 550 - 650w for the 15minutes it took the heat pump to warm up the workshop, external was 7c. I'm considering the solar panels and battery wall, my workshop is south/west on a hillside with two fields in front of it, so perfect for SP & a small turbine... Be good to hear your thoughts on the heat pump when you get it installed.
On a side note, my heat pump/air con unit uses R290 refrigerant (pure Propane so environmentally friendly) and was a pre gassed system so I was able to do a self install with no problems at all. Not sure how the regulations are for that in Germany though. Total cost was around 420 euro.

Overall this summer it's been brilliant in the 39c, keeping it around 21c. The only winter drawback I find with it is if there is a lot of humidity in the minus c, i.e fog/mist, then the external unit can frost up and then has go in to defrost most before it will start heating again, which can use a bit more power, but overall far more efficient than standard electric heaters and infrared panels, as long as the building is well insulted :-)

Infrared can not warm the shadow of your body
If you put it above you your head will melt and the bottom side of legs and arms in the shadow will not get warm.
There is only 1 chance: a curved mirror that reflects the energy back ... (and might heat the mirror too a bit).
The electric heater with a temperature controlled outlet for 20€ works great for us to heat a motorhome in the cold german winter time.
And you might have another chance to improve the situation in your new wintergarten office: buy a huge acrylglas panel to separate your sitting area from the whole room during winter months or use a glas sliding door. The efficiency will improve but the main effect will be fast heating of the desk space where you sit and work ... so a glas or acryl "Raumteiler" would save a lot of energy and the heat distribution will also be better. Yes, sliding glas doors like used in kitchens are pretty expensive or not the cheapest but if you think about tinkering a bit then there is a better solution.
You can build a wood frame and put a translucent foil on in just to get a feeling how much faster it will be to only heat 1 / 3 of the room but that part you are needing to be heated fast and comfortable and efficient. If you believe in this theory forget about a wooden frame and try to get a huge acrylic panel or for the beginning an old wintergarten rooftop called Polycarbonat Doppelstegplatte. They are quite cheap, have an insulation factor due to the air chamber inside and try to make a slideable mechanism. The effect is great and heating time 3 times faster and 4 times less energy with those doppelstegplatten. Yes, it does not look that nice but for a first solution it is great and if you want a nice looking one you might get acrylic glas (no insulation) or a real sliding door used for Wintergarten.
Unless you do not reduce the space and therefore the volume you have to heat you can not really expect any good results except by a "Wärmflasche" you have to exchange every hour or so.
Due to the fact that it had been a Wintergarten with its size that is nice to look over from the desk I guess that a permanent separation is not good but a temporarily that can be removed in March when the sun will be back for sure (cause it is a wintergarten that is mostly located on the southern part of the house). Just start with a temporarily "separation" to get behind how much fast and more efficient that solution might be. If you are convinced you can start spending more money / time / effort for a better solution and Acrylglas would be my first choice in case of budget friendly, temporarily solution for strong winter times. You might need a wooden frame to make the separation moveable and slideable ...
Btw: cheapest solution to crosscheck the effect is a heavy curtain from the ceiling to the bottom with strong mercury chain to stop the air exchange.
You might look at a curtain, but for a week or two just to measure the time and energy consumption (and of cause temperature inside and outside before and while heating) it is the fastest and cheapest solution to get data and a feeling if a acrylglas separation would bring the effects you are looking for.
Final thoughts: prolonge the househeating into this room cause electric heating is very expensive kind to heat while the already existing house heating is producing the addional warmth a lot cheaper especially during winter but also in the spring and autumn when we still have dark cold days between summer sun.
    Good luck

I too am thinking about an infrared panel but the Herschel website (and UA-cam vids) indicate that it heats the fabric of the building. It will warm you up noticeably if you stand in the 'beam' in front of the panel and the part of you not in the 'beam' will still freeze!
Apparently, and I've yet to prove this to myself when I buy one, a convection heater warms the air and this means that humidity can condense out of the warmed air on to cold walls. An IR panel warms the fabric (ie walls and furniture) of your room and not the air. So the whole room will act like a radiator once it warms up - and then maintaining the warmth will be cheaper as the thermostat turns off the IR panel.
Perhaps if your IR panel is further away from you, you will notice that the room becomes warmer and therefore you will then feel warmer! Also, if 'warm' is 24 degrees centigrade, I understand that you will feel warm at a lower 22 degrees with an IR panel.
What I don't understand is that Amazon sell a 60 x 60 cm panel at £150, Herschel sells at £315 and Redwell sells at £600-ish. I can't work out the difference in construction!

I personally think you had it mounted in the wrong place. Also you don't really understand the way these work! There is an amount of heat that builds up on the face of the panel but far infrared energy heats up objects Which in turn gives of heat. Assuming your ceiling is about 8' then I think that would have been a better place to fit it.
Also it's better if you had it set to come on about an hour before you use the desk area and you would have noticed a greater improvement. I fitted an 850 watt one in our bedroom at picture height on the wall opposite our bed (about 6' from the end of the bed) when needed we turn it on about 2 hours before going to bed and the bed is toast when we get in. For the size of the room it's undersized by 500w but we don't like the bedroom to warm and this one has a great picture printed on the front.

They're not all that pretty, but yea. Some designs are better than others, I'd avoid the ones with a grill that only heaves small holes, because that's dumb, and also avoid grills that are painted a colour instead of being reflective metal, because the grill will absorb quite a bit of the energy.

They had to measure the cubic metres in order to determine the amount of heaters/mats, and therefore the required wattage. Based on what they told me, your panel is only useful for a very small space. the size of my space is about the same as yours, but I'll be needing several connected heaters.

correct , cubic meters is the answer . some think still in square feet ! it only heats the surrounding materials , not the air . but even in time the surrounding will also give off the heat .

Update after a winter and summer of having the underfloor heating installed. It is amazing. It heats quickly. And heats the objects in the room. The room is about 5m x 5m with a ceiling height of about 2.3m. 3m wide bi-fold doors (where heat is lost) but it just seems to work. And with the thermostat, it is regulated so doesn’t cost very much to run.

@@osofhia what i seen from an instalation vid .... the wires are only for to the closest registered powerpoint on the floor . they actualy hacked and laid a new line there , and had one where the thermostat was installed , then connect like 8 wires each with the plus and minus and make grooves to direct the lines under the flooring and not to put presure on . tbh , if i watched it and had to do that , would have done it different . but actualy anyone can do it themselves if your technical knowledgable and handy after that vid ! its that :
      A - 2 k is not affordable for me
B - i have a thick hardwood floor , and is a hassle to get out , including the whole interior . hence i said "for new tennants" or people who were allready going on renovating it all !

You should have put it on the ceiling so it heats you from above. I have one in the bathroom and it is superb ! You need to get an IR heater that is suitable for the volume of the room.

@@PixelfriedhofTutorials You need to get a rating twice that recommended for the area / volume you have. That way it will heat up the area much quicker, where by you can then control it in some manner. They take ~ 15 minutes to heat up and then need to warm the whole volume of the room in order to take effect. They are not for quick in and out type use but in a bathroom for instance after half an hour they are magic and you feel the heat all around. A combination of blow heater and IR heater for your application would be ideal and after a while you may be able to turn off the blow heater. You should try it like this, but I suggest you need an IR panel of something like 1200W as you have a lot of brickwork there and it is a large mass to absorb the IR to start with.

I have one and I am happy. Before you complain you should be sure that you bought correct heater for size of room. You should check where is the best location for installation. Behind the desk, close to the floor level? I mounted my on the ceiling as close to the centre of the room as possible. That’s only my opinion. I spend on my £95 and I am thinking about buying another for kitchen.

IR heater doesnt have enything with size of room. It has to warm humans body by direct radiation. If sitting job, the panel has to be on the ceiling. Easy as that. Simple rules.

  • @nixonsmateruby1

Remember, you need to make sure you have bought what you think you brought. There are two types and one is used in places like saunas and one underfloor. You have dodgy characters selling the cheaper version in a panel but for the sake of £5 extra they could sell you a "real" infrared" panel. I bought Termofol and it's 440w per m2 and it was £25 for a metre on eBay, and all I did was add a power source and fixed it to the wall and it worked. I haven't used my gas Central heating at all in 2022, and got my meter removed as I have electric tap and shower, so I was paying a standing charge for a meter I never used.

You should not expect a thermostat to work in your case because the heater you have installed is far too small to heat such a large room. If you are too hot you need a heater with smaller output. You will find this very effective and cheap to run compared with conventional room heating.

@@gebbione I have one mounted on feet right next to my desk in my studio. Mine is 550 watts, and heats my entire 25qm studio comfortably. Of course, if you´re expecting it to heat the room to 80 degrees, ( 26 Celsius) that´s not going to happen. I don´t like overly heated rooms, because they make me tired. I would say the temperature in my studio using my Infrared heater in winter is around 65 degrees, (18 Celsius) which is plenty warm for me. Of course sitting directly next to the heater, it will be warmer. Infrared heaters don´t work as fast as heaters with fans. Even electric oil heaters take time to warm up, so it´s best to buy a timer, and heat up the room 15-20 minutes before. One thing for sure, Infrared heating will cut your electric bill in half.
