Should try the USMC PFT :)
Nick Symmonds thanks for the like
I’ve been practising running for a month or so.
can you do navy seal fitness test
Nick, the army will be changing their fitness test soon. You should check it out, you'll need some other equipment
You'd be DQ'd on the pushups after 30 Nick. It has to be unbroken, knees can't touch the ground. If they do the test stops. Also on your situps, hands have to be interlaced behind your head, can't have them in front like that (makes the situps harder).
That said, loved the video.
did not know that!! Will make sure to do it right the next time.
Was about to comment that
@@nicksymmonds which is why they read the rules to us before every single test. 😑
When I was in the Army, you could shift your hand positions in the "leaning rest" (starting) position as long as they maintain contact. You could also stick your rear up in the air and lock your arms to give them and your core a little break. I'd love to see you give the challenge another try. I bet you'd best your prior attempt.
@@finishstrongcycling2355 just watch out now you cannot lift an army or a leg at all during the test even yo change to a wider pushup position you have to drag it across the ground. And your feet can be up to 12 inches from each other, also the standard for the sit up is someone has to hold your feet you really are not supposed to use heavy support such as the soccer goal.
don't bother commenting about the push-ups somebody already commented that he got dq'd at 30 many times
I counted 25 proper ones before DQ
@@cmard22 23
But i can judge really my 2 mile is petty horrible lol good vid
I’m not trying to be rude, I love the editing, the camera angles and everything. But I’m shocked he thought that taking breaks like that during the push ups would be fine 😂 unless he didn’t care
He woulda bin DQ'd after 30 pushups.
just for something new and interesting, try a bike related video.
I think Nick would actually enjoy road cycling if he tries it out
Have you seen his cross training videos? He bikes and swims.
Shaundre Gomes he does bike
He should definitely do a triathlon
25 mile time trial, nicely tugged in for a bit under an hour of threshold exercise.
Damn I mean technically he failed it. Only got 30 push ups and 0 sit ups
LMAO
oh but he ran and sub 12 minute 2 mile. Promote ahead of peers. obvious leadership quality
@@Jenkins10930 Only if he went Officer.
That's what I was thinking for my job we have our thumbs interlocked about collar bone level and elbows locked to your chest cannot rise off the body
This isn’t the Army’s physical fitness test anymore. Try out the ACFT - it’ll make a much more interesting video!
That’s would be awesome to see someone do that just please read the acft directions before an attempt
Technically I thought that isn’t in effect yet but it will be very soon. Also situps we’re done incorrectly
Won’t take effect until September of this year replacing the APFT. ACFT will be counted for record starting October this year.
Maybe the Army can get just a tad closer to being real savages like there are in the Marine Corps. Hahaha
Alberto Montano unless you’ve never enlisted or straight out of boot, you’d rarely hear inter service bickering or conversations about who is better than who. As an Army vet, I’ve had the honor and privilege to serve alongside not just good soldiers, but crossed trained with Marines, Airmen, and Sailors; US and foreign. Sure, we all know the Marine Corps is one of the toughest to be part of, and their history to this country proves it. But I bet you one thing they teach you at basic (all branches for that matter) is to be humble, have respect, be disciplined, and work with whoever and whenever to get the mission done. This applies when you are in and out of uniform when you take that oath. If you haven’t enlisted or joined yet, I don’t expect you to know this. If you’re fresh out of boot (meaning recent or in the past year or two), you’ll soon learn the meaning of Armed Forces Brother/Sisterhood if you wear the uniform long enough. With all that said, the Marines are one of the toughest “sumbich” out there.
You’re done as soon as you shook out your arms the first time. Only rest position is the front leaning rest position lol
good to know for the next time I attempt it!!
@@nicksymmonds Legend!
you can arch your bag and sag in the middle
@@nicksymmonds If you're gonna do it again, go all the way up on your pushups. Your arms should be strraight.
@@nicksymmonds Re-do it with the limited rest intervals, allowable form, and allowable rest positions. Whole different test that way, and that lactic acid screams at you haha.
Standards here- 550cord.com/mobile/apft-calculator/?vw=fm-21-20-apft-instructions
All I could hear in my head was someone yelling "ZERO, ZERO, ZERO,..." during the situps. Lol some things are just burned into your brain after years of taking the PFT.
😂😂😂 it’s crazy bro
I could literally hear the zeros in my head 😂
Infinite elgtensity? 😂
I can also hear the whisper of "He failed so does he really have to do the run portion of the test?" Followed by "yeah make him do the run." Lol
Unless he is an officer then its "Good job LT you needed 30 and you got 30."
Would love to see you attempt the new ACFT!! Go Army!
Next do the U.S. Marines fitness test
I may have to!!
And the navy seal fitness test
@@nicksymmonds Do the Army ACFT. It's the standard and way more fun than this.
I think he chose this one because Magnus Midtbo already did the navy seal and marines test a few weeks ago. He actually did really well at running as a rock climber. I was really impressed.
Both Marine PFT/CFT would be great to see!
I am just a fan of you Nick . you inspire me a lot . the way you sound motivates me really. thank you for all your videos.
Ugh I felt that lactic acid through my phone. Lactic acid ain’t no joke!!
Can someone explain the Lactic Acid to me?
NitroKnight 2015 basically when you run, lift, etc., lactic acid builds up in your muscles because it is what makes your muscles contract. When you walk/do something easy, your body has enough time to process it so it goes away. When you run fast or lift heavy weights, your body can’t process it fast enough, so it builds up. It is an acid so it causes a burning or soreness sensation in your muscles. It’s pretty easy to feel this if you just sprint as hard as you can for about 200m.
@@Erik-vr2uu Does it though?
Lactate, or more specifically l-lactate, is a substance produced by the muscles during exercise. With the chemical formula C3H5O3, lactate is the conjugate base of lactic acid, but the two are not technically the same. Despite frequent mentions in sports literature and in conversation, scientists currently believe the body does not produce significant amounts of lactic acid at all, and the use of that term in connection with exercise is generally incorrect. Unlike lactic acid, production of lactate is a very real phenomenon and is a crucial part of how the muscles metabolize energy.
Lactic acid was first discovered as a byproduct of bacteria found in sour milk. This is why it shares the lact- prefix with words such as lactose and lactation. However, apart from these linguistic roots, Lactate and Lactic Acid have no unique connection to milk. Instead, lactate is a common biological compound, produced in humans by the metabolism of glycogen and glucose in the muscles.
As glycolysis converts blood glucose into ATP and pyruvate; some pyruvate is then converted back to ATP by the mitochondria, and some is converted to lactate by the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase. While this lactate was once believed to be just a waste product, recent research instead suggests the body actually uses it as a secondary fuel in the muscles, heart, brain, liver, and kidneys.
You should try this again but actually follow the rules of the army pt with the push-ups and situps
He looks like he’s freaking jogging in that 2 mile.
Yeah. Never realized 6 minute mile pace looks that sluggish. Thankfully I never watched my school's XC races. Thtas most of the kids pace lol
EastCoast Shine good runners like him make 6 min pace look like a jog. most amateur runners would need to try very hard to be this composed.
@@skamakaze701 I'm not saying he wasnt great in his prime but here that 6 min pace looks like a steep climb for him. I think its safe to assume that if he had another gear he woulda used it at some point !
yea.. you jog 2 miles..
@@igh.. yeah, that’s what I did for my Air Force PFT. It was hilarious
Great work Nick. I’ve been doing this test for twenty years and it never gets easy. Hard work, dedication, and variety help me maintain. elite scores.
I like how honest your effort was.
Most people cheat the push-ups, but you were honest, and they were all perfect
10:47 His highschool self would have lapped him for the finish at this point.
I love you Nick Simmonds. You're my hero!
Love you too!!
I am actually going into the Army ROTC program at MSU and this is awesome to see you doing this test!
Good job Nick! For a non-army guy who hasn’t been taught all of the fine details of the army physical fitness test you did awesome!
Hi nick, I’m not a skimmer so I don’t know how you did, but I’m sure I’ll love this vid! Keep the work up!!
Thanks for not skimming!! :D
Hey Nick, thanks for the vids😁.
We love your videos. I watched all the videos with my eight year old son. We are looking forward for the next one... hi from Argentina!
You are doing it because it is fun for us to watch and our olympian is entertaining us.
Love your content!!!
Thank you for watching!!
You already know I gotta like the video before it even starts because I know it’s going to be a banger
Awesome video, Nick!!!! Glad you gave this a shot.
Can't wait to see the next military video, nice video💪👏
Nice run, Nick! My record 2 mile was 11:20, but that was almost 20 years and over 40 lbs ago. And I didn't look half as comfortable as you did at the finish.
Cool video! 33 y/o soldier here. On my most recent APFT I did 77 pushups, 76 situps, and ran my 3200m in 11:07. You are right to point out the extra 18 meters necessary to call it a "2 mile," despite the fact that in every APFT I've ever taken they just had us run 3200m and called it 2 miles. I'm sure you'd max the test out if you trained for it: I'm a long distance runner and I hate situps, but as soon as I know when the APFT is scheduled, I just do about 200-250 pushups and 200-250 situps every day for a month prior. I'll switch up how they're distributed into sets, but as long as I get in that total number of reps I know I'll be ready. I take a day or two off before the test, caffeinate, and kick some ass! I've always been curious what kind of numbers Shadrack Kipchirchir and Paul Chelimo threw down when they had to take the APFT. And to add to the chorus of comments below, you should totally make a video doing the new ACFT... that run after the other five events is the hardest "two miles" I've ever run in my life.
I am seeing Nick responding to many comments, so I think that's my chance. You are so inspirational cause you are still running at age 36. I am also a middle distance runner and I love watching your content❤️
(sorry for my English, I'm from Greece)
love the videos nick glad you're gaining a decent following on youtube man I remember when you had just a few thousand.
For the sit up one we tied
This guy looks like a cool guy 😎
Nah, he is a goober 😕
Nick Symmonds nah u the G.O.A.T
Gay lol
Free Bird bruh are you seriously saying that as an insult?
@@zachfriedman4263 if ur gonna get offended online just close app or switch off your phone
Awesome! Your drone operator is 🏆💯💯 Those pros from PDX that raced on McKenzie Track need a good drone operator. Coverage was so bad. You are the GOAT
Still Loving the videos and can't wait for then week after week
u got this just come back stronger 💪
Great Job! Only thing is that once your knees touch the floor with the push-ups you’re technically done lol you can only rest in plank or downward dog I believe. And with the sit ups you can only rest sitting upright.
that would make it even harder!! Next time I will do it correctly
Yeah the standard is pretty crazy you can either remain in the push up start position or sag in the middle just slightly and before you actually start your next push up you have to come to the start position of the push up and then resume. For the sit ups the starting position is the down with arms behind the head fingers have to be interlaced at all times you can rest in the up position but no support like using your arms or elbows to hold yourself up. Took this yesterday actually
They were air force situps, anyway.
This is the only runner you tuber that I genuinely like watching 👍
I’ve been waiting for this vid since I suggested in a post last year!
Good effort. I did a similar test on my channel except the running part was only 1.5 miles. I scored pretty similar to yourself. You should try a Murph workout next time.
Murph has got to be my favorite workout right next to cindy.
Yes Nick I love your vids!
Thank you for watching them!!
Great vid Nick!
Thank you Alex!!
I'm surprised how you actually narrated the thoughts pretty accurately, towards the middle of these workouts it is a mental game.
There should be a pacer test challenge but with a bunch of marathoners that would be fun to see
In 7th grade we had a fitness test and I was a sprinter at the time
I did 150 sit ups
I did 30 push ups
And my mile at the time was slow but it was a 9:25 and I beat everyone in my PE class
Now my mile time is 6:15
It was a lot easier to run a mile since I started XC
12 yr old girl doing 150 sit-ups, okay
Haha
ig that’s not horrible
No need to brag kiddo...
Ha, I remember those days too - sit ups are easier when you're kid-sized!
Good job Nick. For the shape you say your in you did a great job!!!!! Being in your mid 30s I bet with a few years of training you could get your 2 miles back down to about 9.30 even at your age. It looks like your having fun. Don`t loose that. Love watching your videos.
Yey waiting for your update
Real score: 30 push ups, 0 sit ups, 11:54 run
Ummmm, this is the outdated APFT for the Army. The “new” army test is the ACFT (Army Combat Fitness Test) AND there are no breaks in between reps on the pushups
I 100% agree with you, they had me doing the ACFT at my AIT in October of 2019
The start date for the ACFT has been put on hold. As of right now the only scored test on your record is the APFT
Luckily we’re done with the APFT. Won’t be doing that any more at my school at least. ACFT is a much better overall test, IMO.
Jack the Lumberjack I agree but logistic wise there are problems. Equipment and time of completion for an entire unit, etc.
ACFT is on hold
I truly appreciate the effort on this. i hate when people want to tell you what you did wrong but dont tell ya how to correct it. The only 2 things i would work on is holding the plank position instead dropping to your knees during pushups. As during the apft you cant stop during sit ups and pushups, so you cant lay down. You hit the ground and come right back up and your hands have to be behind your head. But straight amazing work as many keyboard warrior s wont even try it. Thanks for this and keep rumbling the plains.
Nick, that is really fun.

Maybe type out the whole title. He's never trained for an army test*
@@chrisrubalcava2717 You mean he's never done the most basic of calisthenics??? Guess that olympic running can't count for the two mile either. Should have been "never read the task condition standards before" just saying.
How about giving The Murph a go? I’m sure a runner would stack up well.
Pullups would be tough. I’d love to see it!!
So bold to show us your first effort! I took the test at age 32 when I visited a Army reserves weekend. Then I was a daily biker for commuting for main exercise, and don't remember my scores, but do remember all my muscles were super-sore with DOMS the next day! Next time, now at age 52, if I do it, I'd pace my muscles out over 7 days before a full effort like you just did!
Try looking into the new PT test for the Army. It’s called the ACFT, there’s 6 events now. Good challenge to try. Not a lot of people can max it!
1:32 “at this time you have failed to complete this event”
Hiii Nick! Do you have any tips for young runners?
Have FUN with running! It's a challenging sport for sure, but make sure it is FUN too!!!
Nick Symmonds thx!
I love this! So fun!
Love you nick such an inspiration for us future athletes I always get motivated and learn new things from your videos thank you so much also just tried the Run gum guys it's actually really good to take before a run or a workout you guys should definitely try it.The best part about it is it doesn't make me feel full like the liquid ones cause I like to workout on an empty tank. ✌✌
Do the Marines Fitness Test!
1:11 is my favorite part. xD
i respect the effort 100%! we soldiers do the APFT all the time so we know the rules like the back of our hands. sure you weren’t doing much of it correctly but no-one expects you to know the rules perfectly the first time
The second you stopped and kneeled up your done regardless how much time is left. But awesome video!
When I was in the Army I did 100 pushups, 100 situps, and a 9:50 two mile. The best in my company. I actually did it in less than two minutes. I just stopped at 100.
IMPRESSIVE!!!
Drill instructors did not like me because I was in better shape than them. I was a track and cross country runner in high school running everything from quarter mile to 5k.
Why would you do 100 and stop before two minutes? Stop at max or keep going.
I had received the max of 100 points for the event so why do anymore. I got the max of 300 points for all three events.
very humble guy
Nick: Does 55 Pushups and is disappointed.
Me: Does 10 pushups.... HELL YEAHHH!!!!
I look forward to the follow up ! Agreed that you will have to follow the standards for no rest during the push ups or sit ups.
Thank you for taking the challenge, just as with all people who train to get better at their activity, you just have to put in the time and effort, it paid off for me as i am well into my 40's but I can still easily knock out over 80 push ups, 88 sit ups and well.....the 2-mile I can only get as good as a 11:25, but don't worry I am working on that now. I just lost 20 lbs. I am back down to 158 lbs and starting back up on marathon training. Can't wait to see your future results. P.S. next is the ACFT Army Combat Fitness Test....Phewwww.
“Classic” 1:07
haha i had a feeling that nick would attempt this at some point XD
been wanting to for a while!
Love the vids
Thank you for watching them!
Just found the channel, i feel like i'm soooo late in finding it, well done with the challenge 👍🏃
“Olympic athlete” and “no training” don’t really go together but ok
LOL!!!! I was going to say the same thing. 1:42 in the 800 doesn't exactly mean "no training."
It’s obvious this dude didn’t do his research before attempting the APFT. Mericaaaa
Stfu dude most importantly he's having fun
That’s a motivating challenge! The 2 mile is the hardest though, and you’ve got that covered, so you should be able to smash the overall score in just 4-6 weeks
will train for it~!!
I live how nick is his own hype man
First
Thanks for the heart Nick
Nick you would crush the Air Force pt test! Our standards are lower than other branches of the military. Would love to see you do it!
Again, as I watch, and as a fan of distance running, I find it amazing that a guy that was chasing Rudisha in the '12 Olympics is grimacing on the final lap of a two mile run, at 6 minute pace! Regardless, I really appreciate what you are putting out here Nick. Hope people realize how extremely dedicated and talented you were when you were professional. Just night and day compared to what you are doing now.
These videos are well edited. I like this content! Need to study the rules for the pushup test a little closer though, can't leave the pushup position during the 2min. I'm gonna join you in gunning for that those scores though. Gotta find something to do during lockdown. Liked and subbed!
Starting in October the Army is transitioning to their new PT test, the ACFT, I would bet that would make some good content! Adds a couple more events like dead lift and a sprint drag carry.
Based on some of my results (for AF) I think i've almost got you on the push ups and sit ups, but damn am I jealous of that run. I'm working on it, and seeing you knock it out 20 lbs up from race weight definitely gives me some inspiration.
Congratulations.
I used to have the opposite problem, always maxed push ups and sit ups but was a slow runner so always scored between 275-295! This was so fun to watch, you’re gonna nail it next time!
nice vid nick, should try the marines test sometime too!
This was recommended to me after I watched Natacha Oceane complete the old US Army fitness test. First of all, she killed it. But I also love that she really took the time to read all the rules to make sure she did everything to the T. 👏🏻
The Olympic version of 'Carmen San Diego'. Love these videos.
another great vid
It's amazing how push ups get exponentially harder the longer you go. Way to get full range of motion, Nick!
Would you consider doing another live Q&A on this youtube channel, Nick? I get that you might have already exhausted many of the most common questions that people have, so I totally understand why you might not want to.
You should attempt the Air Force PT Test! The running distance is a mile and a half and it would be interesting to see how you approach it
Just attempted the push-ups portion. Was able to bust out 87 in 2 minutes to hit the 100 for a 26 year old. I was actually able to do 100 push-ups in a row at one point when I was playing sports in college. Thank you for the motivation Nick!!! Love your videos!!
Nice Nick... there are several different methods to the pushups too like spreading your hands. Bad news is there is a NEW PT test coming out, check it out!
Currently making a review on you tube on RunGum! Can't wait to try all flavors 😋
Hey Nick have you ever done a planking challenge? I was thinking it would be a good challenge for people because there's a big mental element that comes into play. I hit a 5 minute plank goal last night which isn't crazy but I'm pretty happy about! It feels like a game, challenging and pushing ourselves. Love the videos! Wishing you and yours much love, peace brother.
Oh yes. You should try the Army Combat Fitness Test next. It is interesting to say the least.
Did not know that about the 2 mile! You taught me something. But yeah I was in the Army and as a person or two pointed out, the form and rules are pretty strict like you can’t put your knees on the deck for push ups etc. You did so great for your first time though! Thanks for doing this! :)
P.S. it is insanity to hear you talking about how slow or bison-like you feel because you are running my absolute pace goals! 💪🏼
Love his vids
I realise there’s lots of comments about Nick not doing it 100% correctly but this is such an awesome effort. Awesome video!
All the other vets and active duty said everything I was thinking. But, you’re an olympian so who am I to say anything fitness related to you? 😂😂 Love your videos.
