Great video. I have to try that window trick on my 2001 986 Boxster. My advice: If the plastic windows breaks (mine did after about 15 years), do NOT ask a Porsche dealer to fix it for you. They will try to see you a complete new top. I got it replaced here (South of France) by a local upholsterer/saddler (don't know the correct term in English) that usually works on the yachts in the local marina.
This! My plastic window has cracks that are now embarrassing and I am researching various options as the top itself still looks brand new. Did you only replace the window itself? with glass or plastic?
@@sjk8775 Hi there, I only had the plastic replaced (with plastic). Porsche had asked around 6000 to replace the whole roof which was still good besides the cracks in the plastic window.

Now I have to run down to the garage and see if my 987.2 wipers work the same way. I know the key fob doesn't open and close the windows, but I need to check if turning the key in the door does.
With top down, turning the key in either direction and holding in place locked and unlocked the door, but did nothing to the window. At one point it sounded like the window regulator motor clicked, but nothing happened. I didn't have time to mess with the windshield wiper other than to reach in with the top down and confirm there are 4 positions. (It also set off my alarm. LoL.). I also have a switch on the face of the stalk. Not sure what it does. Probably because I've only driven in the rain once since I got the car 15 months ago. :). By the way, for the record, I have a 2010 987.2 Boxster Base. I'll report back more on the windshield wiper when I have time to play with it.
@@HelpMeDIY - ok. The lowest position is off. But pressing down is spring loaded and gives a one swipe of the blades. Pulling the stalk towards me activated the the wiper fluid spray. . The switch on the face of the stalk does indeed control the speed of the intermittent wipers. BUT!!!! I found another button on the underside of the stalk face... So cool to find these things. 😂 Oh, by the way don't activate the windshield washer spray when you're not moving and the top down.... Ask me why I know!! 😂😂😆😂
Thanks for your Boxster videos. I'm not very mechanically inclined, so I don't see myself tackling some of the more difficult things you've done (like adding heated seats) but I still enjoy watching them. The tutorial on reading the electrical diagrams was very enlightening! And this one was great - did not know about the windows/key trick or the Boxster chop! I do have a project I want to do - the tether on my gas cap has broken, and I purchased a replacement, but I can't figure out how to get the pin or whatever holds the end of the tether off. I have the Bentley book but it doesn't show how to get it off either. Have you had to do this?
First, thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment about the channel. I really appreciate it! I have not had to replace the gas cap or tether, but your question made me curious so I just went out to my garage to look at it. I think I have your solution! If it's like mine, it looks like "pin" holding the tether on is a typical rivet that Porsche (and BMW) uses a lot. I will call it a rivet in this description for clarity. I have an example of removing a similar rivet in one of my recent videos, the separating the lenses on the headlights. But what you have is similar to a wall anchor that expands when the screw goes in. There is a small cylindrical pin where the screw would go in a wall anchor that makes the bottom (legs) expand out. That's what holds the rivet in place. What you have to do is to press that pin in from the top and it will go all the way through and out the bottom of the rivet, relieving the pressure on those 3 "legs" that are spread out and holding it in place. You can then pull the rivet out. To reinstall, insert the rivet then press the pin back into the top of the rivet to lock it in place.
@@HelpMeDIY Thanks again - with your explanation and the video you mentioned I was able to find the right replacement pin and was able to get the old one out and the new gas cap and pin in. Couldn't reply on Facebook as I'm not on there. But I did buy a shirt!
Alarm bells are ringing. Ultra low mileage vehicles tend to be quite fragile. ‘Mint condition’ with 22/23 year old parts which have sat around perishing. You may be ok but I’d avoid a double race IMS bearing car which hasn’t been driven. Look out for timing chain rattle, your IMS bearing is unlikely to fail but your timing chains are liable to snap. It’s the reason Porsche didn’t revert to the double race bearings after the discovery of IMS bearing failure in the single race bearing, even after a law suit. Timing chains are an engine out job and it’s very labour intensive where as changing the IMS bearing can just be done at every clutch change.
I HAVE A 1999 BOXSTER . When I purchase the vehicle I told my wife I would just flip it and use the money to go toward her Florida room. it had a couple of things not working. The first is the rear spoiler is stuck up and will not go down . I tried the manual switch but it did not work. Next is the car can't be unlocked on the driver side ,the key just spins with no lock or unlock action. There is not a radio installed but I need a wiring diagram to do this correctly and safely. The last is the IMS bearing replacement or upgrade status is unknown. This as i found out is vital for engine life. Have you re[placed yours ? Hi Erin. Thanks for your video. Didn't know the window trick. Please state how long you have it, what have been done with it. Mileage is always important as it helps to recognize whether you use it or just wash it most of the time. I own my 98 model now for about 8 years. It has 215 000 km on it and are totally reliable and still immense fun and absolutely gorgeous. I have the widest biggest set of tires possible on a standard 986 (275x30/R19 rear and 235x35R19 front) for daily drive but uses the standard rims with Pirelli P600's on track days. This thing is incredibly awesome. The CAT is removed. I replaced all springs and shocks lately, all engine/gearbox mounts. recon starter motor and just ordered a new plastic window, mine cracked (I drive top down most of the time). Engine still original, only using 9.1 liter fully synthetic oil. Oil stay always clean. I ordered new cambelt and pulleys, thermostat and housing, water bottle and water pump. Just prepare to somewhere in the near future, replace those items. Thanks to videos like yours and youtube, I managed to do most work my self. All I can say, this car is so over engineered that it is perhaps at least one of the best reliable and tough cars on the planet. I'm 63 and owned 47 cars by now. People especially fellow Porsche snobs may look down on Boxsters, but they are incredible reliable, simple and cheap to maintain and enjoy, every day.
+Alexander van Wyk hey there! I’ve had the car fir 2 years now and it has around 77,000 miles now. I have an entire video dedicated to the overview of everything I have done 😉
Great tips. Do you have any suggestions for a cheap way to get a replacement key? mine only came with 1 key fob. Dealer , local porsche shop wants $375 for a new programmed key.

I have some things that I want to work on, but I need more cosmetic work on mine than yours looks. I’ve always loved the Guards Red, Okay, my question is: what do you use on your back window as mine in no where as clear as yours. Do you have a specific brand or method that you use to keep it looking so good? Thanks again for sharing everything that you have with all of us. Cheers, Jack

No 1 is true for every car with automatic windows ;) and it makes no sense to put your spoiler just anywhere aerodynamically, this is a safety feature so people don't get their hands crushed. Same reason why you need to hold the open-button for tops on any car I can think of.
@@HelpMeDIY That is not what I said. I said 1) it makes no sense to have it just anywhere 2) the manual operation is a SAFETY FEATURE. If you hear your damn son screaming behind the car, that is a clue for you to stop retracting the spoiler. If you only had to push the button once and it would retract all the way no matter what, you'd be looking at a law suit ;)

+Marquis Sivels thanks for watching! Sounds like you will want to subscribe 😉
I have not done the IMS personally. Check out the link to the manual in the description, it has a wiring diagram.
Thank helpfull tip 😊
+Yvan Montplaisir you’re welcome! 🍻
Beautiful Boxter there
+Zamri2 thanks 🙏
Only Porsche would have some of these features that are gonna break... haha. Showing mistakes is the best way to learn. Thanks.
+Rick Beacham I agree about learning from mistakes!
Great tips. Do you have any suggestions for a cheap way to get a replacement key? mine only came with 1 key fob. Dealer , local porsche shop wants $375 for a new programmed key.
+bruce wayne I don’t yet, sorry
Is there a way to fix the top on my 99 boxter . Both straps that help store the top into its slots are not there. Previous owner had not modified and there is no way to reinstall as they simply are not there anymore.
Hi there my 2008 I bought used and reverse is locked and not moving in reverse..thinking this is transmission I have 100k miles 2008 any tips?
+Tamara Fox sounds like a transmission issue but it’s impossible to diagnose something like that with that description remotely.
@@HelpMeDIY Yes 100 percent sure it is transmission thank you
Hello friend, which radio did you install has carplay and is it very complicated to modify the factory one?
+carlo dalenz search my channel for “Boxster head unit” and you will find the install video. In that videos description will be a link to the one I used. And yes, modifying the factory one would be extremely complicated!
@@HelpMeDIY never mind. Lol about the head piece question in the other post. Found your answer here 👍 lol Sry
Hi. Just bought an 02. 47000 km. Great shape except the plastic roof.. I think I can fix the cracks as they’re minimal, BUT, it is tearing away from the canvas. Any advice shy of replacement would be great??
+Graham McRae some places can sew a new plastic window in, but most opt for replacement with a new one or even the glass window version
@@HelpMeDIY thanks. The Shane is that the rest of the roof is in really good shape! I’ve reached out to canvas sailmpeople but they’re not getting back. I read somewhere that maybe upholstery shops? I’ll try them.
I noticed that you upgraded your radio/stereo, what about the climate controller now?
+EL PRIMO they just get relocated to below the stereo head unit.
@@HelpMeDIY What did you replace it with (radio type ). And btw ? Where did ya get the spoiler upgrade ? Lol. Thnx
@@Chon-c check the Boxster mods and maintenance playlist on my channel and there are links to all the products and full install videos 😉
What does, "I CAR the Warranty" on the tshirts mean?
+Scott Shrader haha it says “I AM the Warranty “
Hi Aaron, I can’t tell you how much I’ve appreciated your videos. You taken the bull by the horns &did everything yourself using only the 101 book, which I just bought. I just acquired. My first Porsche after waiting 40+ years. I got a 2000 S from California. In in New York and I was concerned about salt & rust. I’ve done light work on my cars starting with my dad teaching me, but I really gotta give you props for having the confidence to do it your way.
I have some things that I want to work on, but I need more cosmetic work on mine than yours looks. I’ve always loved the Guards Red,
Okay, my question is: what do you use on your back window as mine in no where as clear as yours. Do you have a specific brand or method that you use to keep it looking so good?
Thanks again for sharing everything that you have with all of us.
Cheers, Jack
+nyjack1953 love to hear that, thank you!
For the window my detailer used a plastic polish. I guess I should make a video on it huh? 😉
@@HelpMeDIY yes, your window looks great & I’d like to get mine in the same condition,
Thanx, Jack
@@nyjack1953 you have to replace the entire convertible top. there is no way to fix it once its cloudy.
@@HelpMeDIY I think that, that makes a lot of sense. There are a lot of us in the same situation. Not only with Boxster, but grade 2 models ( Miata, S2000 etc.).
@@metalguyn sure there is! Check out my latest video on it 😉
How long have you had that car and how long do you plan on keeping it?
+Wolverton LeCensura had it about 3 years now I think. I go back and forth between selling it to get something new to make videos on and keeping it for a long time 😂
@@HelpMeDIY if you did decide to sell it, what would you have to get for it?
@@wolvertonlecensura9541 I’d probably ask 15
SUBSCRIBED!👍👏
+susan Diffee thanks! 🙏
My soft top plastic is terrible! I have a 97 and I can’t see out of it at all
+Absolute Kaos I bet! I have a separate video on cleaning them 😉
Overfilling the oil by half a quart can actually help save a failing ims bearing.
No, overfilling can damage your engine.
@@HelpMeDIY why only check it on the dash and not on the dipstick. I didn't see you checking the oil level on the dipstick, you only pullen it out, It May vary with the level shown in the dash.....
@@bennie1692 it’s easier 🤷♂️. Also newer models don’t have a dipstick
I know but maybe your oil level was ok if you had checked the dipstick, it varies from each other. Mine 986 is overfilled in the dash but on the dipstick its 👌
mistakes are part of the learning process :)
+Scott Shrader absolutely!
me and my brothers just saw you at Walmart
+Trixy Sanchez first of all, don’t tell anyone that 🤫 😂
You should have waved me down and said hi!
"i had my wife trained" got me laughin a bit ngl
+Swisha 😂 😂 😂
I own a 2000 Boxster
+Kevin Diggs you should definitely subscribe!
Yea guys don’t do that boxer chop because you’ll brake the plastic anyways! 2:49
+@javiercruz9262 definitely do the chop or it will get creased wrong and fail sooner
I forgot about the key trick. Would have helped stopping my wife from pulling on the door before the window goes down.🤨
+J Co I know exactly what you are talking about 😆
No 1 is true for every car with automatic windows ;) and it makes no sense to put your spoiler just anywhere aerodynamically, this is a safety feature so people don't get their hands crushed. Same reason why you need to hold the open-button for tops on any car I can think of.
+Baerchenization how does one get their hands crushed or not based on the aerodynamics of a spoiler?
@@HelpMeDIY That is not what I said. I said 1) it makes no sense to have it just anywhere 2) the manual operation is a SAFETY FEATURE. If you hear your damn son screaming behind the car, that is a clue for you to stop retracting the spoiler. If you only had to push the button once and it would retract all the way no matter what, you'd be looking at a law suit ;)
@@Baerchenization that is what you said, but now I understand what you meant :)
That repaint looks like SHIT.... key hole has paint GUNKED in it. overspray on the black top bottom corner pillar trim, especially door upper black trim in the corner. even the door jam got overspray... WTF!! ITS NOT HARD TO TAKE THE EXTRA TIME.. There's even overspray on the convertible top below the back window on the drivers side... WTF!!! Hope you purchased it like that and didn't have or do the repaint... Body wrap just might be the best for this car...
+@gamblefamily768 you’re not wrong at all. I have a video about it, go check it out 😂
Car ended up getting wrapped btw
