Is SPACEBALLS Actually Good?

- Today we sat down and watched SPACEBALLS with @oompaville! This 1987 parody of Star Wars is definitely a cult classic, but does it hold up in 2023? Lone Starr and Barf travel across the galaxy to save Princess Vespa, and use the power of the Schwartz to defeat the evil Dark Helmet. Is it funny? Is it cringe? Idk but it's probably better than the disney movies lol

Spaceballs - 1987
In a distant galaxy, planet Spaceball has depleted its air supply, leaving its citizens reliant on a product called "Perri-Air." In desperation, Spaceball's leader President Skroob (Mel Brooks) orders the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) to kidnap Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) of oxygen-rich Druidia and hold her hostage in exchange for air. But help arrives for the Princess in the form of renegade space pilot Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his half-man, half-dog partner, Barf (John Candy).

Funny thing about the scene where Dark Helmet is drinking coffee from the Styrofoam cup. They made that scene intentionally because the crew kept leaving styrofoam cups around the set while they were filming and it became too much trouble to keep stopping to clean them up. So they added that scene to establish that the spaceballs just use those cups.
Honestly it makes sense that the Spaceballs would use disposable styrofoam
huh. neat
I've been watching this movie almost yearly since I was 12 and I never knew that!
If only GoT knew that before leaving a Starbucks cup in shot.
Guess thatsw why some crew where "attacked" in some of mel brooks scene. (another was in Men in Tights)
The chestburster scene 100% has a reason to be in the movie. It repaired my trauma from seeing the actual Alien chest burst scene. Plus references my moms favorite Looney Tunes episode.
I love how it’s the same actor too. So he just says, NOT AGAIN!!!
When Yogurt shows them the Soaceballs coloring book it’s literally just a Transformers coloring book scribbled to say Spaceballs. I always love that sight gag
My mother was really into parodies of anything no matter how known or unknown. I really miss her but I know when I'm watching parodies I know she's there watching it too.
Me too! Love them.
You guys need to watch
AMERICA: THE MOTION PICTURE
it is truly an insane and not good movie.
The movie starts with Abraham Lincoln getting his throat ripped out by a werewolf as he tells George Washington to start the American revolution, and then George Washington goes Chainsaw-Man mode on some Red Coats. And then I keep getting to board to finish the movie
Yes!
I watched this movie once, and then proceeded to watch it 5 more times!😅
I'm not even a Star Wars fan at all but I absolutely love Spaceballs and it's one of my favorite comedies ever!
I loved it when they said "It's Spaceballin' Time", but they sadly didn't Spaceball'd all over
It's a stupid movie that's supposed to be stupid. It makes fun of the scifi/star wars tropes, it's gold!!
“your schwartz is as long as mine” best line 2024
Fun fact: the spaceball blaster is literally just a calico m100 rifle with no modifications, it just looks that weird

...Honestly one of the best jokes in the movie
that is my favorite part
"Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb." -Dark Helmet
"I see your schwartz is as big as mine! Now let's see how well you.....handle it."
I would rather say “evil will always triumph, because good is complacent” but that’s not as catchy as Dark helmet’s quote. anyway peace is a lie, there’s only passion
Note:I hope people get the reference I was making in the last sentence.
Preach it, sista! 💅
"Your helmet is soo big" - dark helmet
"He's out of line, but he's right".
BTW, that quote at 15:00 exactly was so far ahead of its time. “Even in the future nothing works”.
yeah
My favorite part about it is that the movie is PG yet they had that in there. The 80s were fucking weird, lol
@ZeyTheIncubus pg b4 1985 I believe was pg n pg13 content, they didn't have a pg 13 content yet so many pg movies look n act more dark then you'd expect. Like jaws is a pg movie 😂 that thing had a kid get jacked! N u see the red mist. Also the one guy's death was brutal.

@ZeyTheIncubus yea pg back then was pretty much pg13 not for us kids lmao but it made us.
The reason the effects are so good (at least for the time) is because they actually got the people who did the effects for Star Wars. George Lucas himself agreed to the project, on the condition that no merchandise be made. That was the inspiration for the MOICHANDISING!
MOICHENDAISING
MOICHENDAISING

The merchandise thing was just a joke by Mel Brooks that way too many people believed. He didn’t actually say that the movie couldn’t have merchandise.
Also that Lonestar didn't dress like Han Solo. So, he dresses like Indiana Jones instead. Go figure.

“What is he?”
“An Asshole, sir”

Spaceballs>Star Wars
I don't know if it's mentioned, but when the creators asked George Lucas if it was okay to make the movie, Lucas said Lone Star couldn't be dressed like Han Solo. So they had him dress as Indiana Jones instead.
I thought his only stipulation was no merch?
they're the same guy anyways
What makes this even better is that George Lucas had his special effects team help with this movie. He loved it so much

Best part about the chestburster scene is that the actor is John Hurt, whose character died in the original scene from Alien. Hence why when the alien comes out of his chest, he says "Not again!"
I’m pretty sure the whole main crew of Alien was in that scene, if I’m not mistaken.
The fact I can watch that scene in Spaceballs but not in Alien 💀
@@violetdagger2724 I don't think so. Just John Hurt.

*The Search for More Money
Ah the Disney sellout sequel lol.
Tbh defines the whole sequel trilogy to a T
If only if only
Well Mel brooks is making history of the world part 2 so there may be hope for a spaceballs sequel in the future
11:40 I am a "80's historian" myself lol.
the surgeon joke came from the genuinely true fact that plastic sergeons were filthy rich and worked on their time. You had to schedule everything and since they were the 'bad boy' doctors of the time they were often late because they usually played golf. Back in the 80s they viewed playing golf as a status symbol.
Idk really super obvious but I thought context would be cool I guess.
Makes one think just how much has changed since the 80s. You have to remember that there are adults who don't really remember a world where UA-cam and Facebook didn't exist, while at the same time, only a generation older, 99% of people had no idea there was a thing called the internet, despite it's formal introduction in 1984
Oh ok
I randomly just remembered that in some episodes of The Fairly Odd Parents that the fairy doctor would constantly be golfing, dressed for golfing, or just getting back from golfing
I thought the joke was kinda obvious... I guess they didn't know rich people play golf
Helmet says to the doctor to go back to the golf course and work on your putts.
15:10 Airplane was rated PG even though it has suicide, drug use, language, and nudity. The 80s were something else
Yeah. That movie was....something 😳
Parents today: "This book about gays existing is offensive, nobody gets to read it, remove it from every library!"
Parents in the '80s: "Look, Timmy, here is my Parental Guidance: this shit is funny, try to be more like these people when you grow up."
I like turbulence
There's quite literally a moment of bouncing fully nude tits when they're all freaking out in the plane
Spaceballs is great because they have that element of sincerity amidst the parody. I feel like the main characters actually have some chemistry, and the fight at the end is genuinely well done
Unlike how the 2000s handled parody movies, Mel Brooks's movies always made sure they had a cohesive narrative first. It's not just a parody, it's a neat little film in it's own right.
Yknow, the other day I was watching Epic Movie and just was kinda bored with it for some reason. I think this is the reason. It all felt insincere like it just existed to rush along to the next joke instead of giving enough investment in the characters to keep me with it.
It'd be cool if Microwave Society reacted to Tomorrowland, the most 5/10 movie ever made, starring George Clooney and the Eiffel Tower
🤣🤣🤣
it definitely existed
I wanna see them do Galaxy Quest, that movie is funny and goofy af.
That movie made me a bit uncomfy
That movie was weird
The best part of this whole movie is that the effects look so good BECAUSE it was done by ILM. On top of getting direct permission from George Lucas
BUT with the condition of not doing any merchandising, hence Yogurt's gift shop
@@Beregorn88 as well as not making lonestar look like Han solo, so they made him dress like Indiana jones instead.

3:42 “I didn’t know i was gonna end up on this side of the internet today” 💀
13:07 George Lucas got a chance to read the screenplay before production on Spaceballs began, and loved it so much that he decided to have his special effects company, Industrial Light & Magic, help make this movie.

Not only did George Lucas approve of this movie (on the condition of no merchandise sold) but they also used the same sfx team/company
So it's George Lucas's fault that none of us got Spaceballs the flamethrower.

That mirror underneath the speeder is EXACTLY how they did it in the original version of A New Hope. That was actually really cool to see!
considering it's the same special effects company I'm not surprized really look up who did the special effects... You probably can kinda guess.

My dad is a massive Mel Brooks fan, so introduced me to his movies. He's a riot and has really good understanding of comedy. Love this movie and glad to see others do as well.
@FuturePants well it made George Lucas almost have a hernia laughing so Brooks must have done something right.
@Burger Pants Yes, comedy.
@Burger Pants It must be painful to be the only person on earth who knows what everyone else finds funny.
I adore how Bren takes center stage here, so happy and excited to tell some jokes and relive some nostalgia.
8:00 the reason he has a styrofoam cup is that crew members would leave them around the set, and Rick Moranis would just take them and pretend to drink them with his helmet still on.
3:13 don’t you hate it when you forget to get married
I always hate it when I forget to get married
Dang nabbit
9:25 I think it's a reference to the Wizard of Oz when they go to see the wizard. Vespa is Dorothy, Dot Matrix is the Tin Man, Barf is the Lion, and Lone Star is the Scarecrow. They walk up to this terrifying huge statue with a bellowing voice and then realize there's just a little man behind it.
Yep. It's a nice and fun reference.
yes
There are references of so many different movies in this movie. My sister also pointed the wizard of Oz and yeah
There's a Yu-Gi-Oh archetype called Kozmo that's basically a cross between Star Wars and The Wizard of Oz
Not just a reference, it was actually the exact same set where the Wizard of Oz scene was filmed, if I remember correctly.
Back when movies weren't afraid to be stupid... but with actual fun and soul behind it.
Agreed I rather watch a movie that is trying to be dumb like cocaine bear even though that is loosely based on a true story I belivee. But regardless it's better to make a dumb movie with soul and fun behind it then a contrived hollywood movie trying to emulate that feeling.
@@aaronbozack830 Very loosely. The cocaine killed the bear pretty quickly from stroke and heart failure.

5:10 a behind-the-scenes info report somewhere stated that the Pizza the Hutt suit would reach absolutely broiling temperatures because they had to make the viscous cheese fluid drip enough to be noticeable. So they heated up the suit, forgetting that the guy inside was now just being cooked like a cut of meat wrapped in clay and foil in an oven
I've read this too. Apparently they used pancake mix for the cheese liquid, and supposedly the heated liquidy suit smelled absolutely terrible and some crew couldn't remain in the room due to the smell and disgusting imagery.
Also, the guy inside the suit was comedy legend Don Delois, who almost caught fire when the heating element that ran through the suit shorted out

I always find it interesting that Dark Helmet could just be Lonestar's former roommate by following the logic of that line.
You could never see a genius parody like this because it is so irreverent yet respectful at the same time, and that's Mel Brooks' genius. Everything nowadays has to say it has "subtext" while actually being in-your-face with a message that even things that are billed as "funny" are just cringefests of the highest magnitude.
GalaxyQuest is every bit as genius. Less slapstick funny, but still with a lot of respect and irreverence. Much higher budget though, but very reminiscent of Spaceballs. Good acting, great cast chemistry, obvious parody made with a bunch of love not only to the source material, but also toward the fandom of the source material, with a plot that's extremely meta.
Mm spaceballs isn't funny though. Alot of very obvious jokes, lots of puns and dumb innuendo, it's middle school humor
