    I have never made a wool appliqué quilt, but it is something that might be fun. This video was very useful. Now I know there is extra thin quilting thread that may be good for other quilts where the quilting is necessary, but not the star. Loved your sock trick! Thank you!

    Thank you for a great video. I have a machine embroidered quilt and l like your idea of not going around all the designs but just highlighting a few. Thanks again. I learn so much from you.

    I have long arm quilted a few wool hand applique and embroidered quilts too. It is a challenge, however, I approached them in the same way as you have here. Just let the beauty of the quilt shine through and help enhance the texture. A bonus is that the thread sinks right in!!

    Hallelujah! I am so happy you made this video, Angela! I designed and made an appliquéd wool quilt top, but it still hangs unfinished because I had no idea how to quilt it. You have shown me the light! A million thanks! (My Spargo-naut friends will be happy, too!)

    I have a Christmas quilt that has been hanging in my closet for finishing for far to long.....I quilted the matching tree skirt a few years ago, but this is bigger and seems overwhelming...time to get to it though and finish at least one UFO this year! Your quilting on the wool quilt is helpful as I am two blocks away from finishing my first wool quilt. Now I have some ideas. Thank you!

    Spectacular quilt.Condoms work well as thread nets. I had fun explaining why I had condoms in my sewing basket, but they really do work. I have only used unlubricated ones. They will rot after a while, but are inexpensive and widely available.

    My mom just upgraded her embroidery machine to a Viking EPIC and her and I are making Mola quilt squares of little animals and flowers that I am going to make a quilt with. All the square are really colorful. (She just turned 90 and that thing keeps her young!) I used to hand quilt years ago but not going to do that any more. I bough a Sweet 16 and just playing with scraps right now learning tension etc and watching lots of videos. I am probably crazy but going to quilt this quilt after we get done and put it together. Would like to put Minkie on the back cuz it is sooooo soft (what do you think of Minkie). I think it is a lot to take on for my first project but no guts no glory I guess. This quilt sort of reminded me of it cuz there are lots of thinks to outline. I am so glad I found you! I love this quilt cuz we are making it together and it is great time together for us.

    I used to do machine quilting on an old (think 1980) home sewing machine WITHOUT FEAR, but I was a lot younger back then. I also figured that if I made a mistake, I would just keep that quilt. That seemed to work back then. I'm still using a regular home sewing machine and I'm just starting to get brave again because the closest place that does longarm quilting is an hour away. Recently I quilted a larger baby quilt and thank goodness the parents do not sew! There were a few mistakes and I kept wishing for a machine with a stitch regulator, but I got it done! I'm STILL wishing for a machine with a stitch regulator, and my husband Joe is looking for one for me! He's actually sort of an expert on sewing machines. I just sew on them. Anyway, I have a stack of finished tops out in the barn, which is where I have a huge sewing room upstairs and a cat for a helper. I really need to try machine quilting again! JOE! My birthday is only 8 days from now, so get crackin' on that sewing machine with the stitch regulator for me!!!

    I’m the opposite (even though I don’t quilt for customers). I can easily figure out how to quilt all my wool applique quilts and my regular heavily embellished quilts but pieced quilts just throw me. I’m like you and easily get bored with an all over design so prefer more of a custom look but I struggle with pieced quilts to be sure! Plus I quilt on a Bernina Q20 sit down machine and so it’s harder than you would expect to use rulers and move the quilt and keep it from moving every time i have to stop to move the quilt/ruler. I do it anyway but always love your videos and how honest you are with issues and problems! And your motto about it’ better to have a finished quilt that isn’t perfect than an unfinished quilt (paraphrasing....can’t remember exactly what you said but this was my take-away..lol).

  • @SmittenKitten.
    @SmittenKitten. 7 років тому +13

    Looks INCREDIBLE!!! Is that all hand applique and embroidery, btw?? What a crazy-incredible quilt! Your quilting really polished it beautifully. I don't do FMQ, but I do have many unfinished quilt tops because I'm so terrified they won't fit together perfectly. I end up making all the blocks, and then get too scared to piece them together because I'm a serious scaredy-cat. However, your work on the MQS has pushed me into finishing several tops. Your motto "finished is better than perfect" has helped me immensely! Congrats on conquering this!

      I hope this worked! I really appreciate it, I just purchased a Baby Lock Coronett a couple of months ago, I am so obsessed with quilting my own quilts that I did not even want the option of adding computerized software later. I feel like it would only be "half made" by me, if that makes sense. I hope you do another cruise at a later date since I am unable to make the one coming up. My husband and I watch your videos and are completely amazed with your work! I can't wait to finish this quilt. BTW, do you think I should border it? Have you ever backed a quilt with flannel, if so can you still long arm it the same? Thanks so much for your time, as I know you are extremely busy!

  • @annwitten4359

    I usually only do straight line quilting- I would love to do some FMQ- but I’m such a chicken. I have a small domestic so quilting on it was kind of difficult already, but after my stroke, my left arm is still weak. This makes it super difficult to do any quilting at all. I have sent my last two tops to my local longarmer but I know my Mom would love to have her quilt done completely by me. Ahh so much stress!!

    • @lynhanna917
      @lynhanna917 7 років тому

      see a video put out by Leah Day, she shows how she suspends her quilts and this could help you. You may find that your arm will be able to work harder if your brain and right hand are concentrating on FMQ. I have cysts in both eyes and can't see to sew a straight line so it is a good thing wiggly lines are in. A quilt done by you would be a true gift for your mom - just go for it.

  • @ekeefner

    Wow! So amazing. I have been quilting for years but the actual quilting part still scares me. So much in fact that I rarely finish a quilt bigger then a baby quilt. After watching you though and listening to you say that "an imperfect finished quilt is always better than a perfect unfinished quilt top" (Ok so that is not exactly like you say it but you know what I mean.) I have been inspired. Any way I have taken that to heart and have started on my on personal crusade to learn to machine quilt for reals! I had a question though, with all that starting and stopping and changing thread on this quilt how do you manage thread ends. Start and Stops are my nemesis.

      I don’t know about you, but I’m not so great at free hand doodling. However, if I have something to look at, with a little practice, I can usually get pretty close.
      I’m considering a go with marking my quilting lines first, and then quilting. Maybe that will take some of the pressure off?

    • @SmittenKitten.
      @SmittenKitten. 7 років тому

      Katelynd Sews I've quilted small pieces (wall hangings, pillows, etc.) by drawing first, and it DOES take a ton of the pressure off, but I can't find a method of marking that I like really well. Frixion pens (which I use often during piecing) are dubious because of the ghosting and reappearing, water-soluble pens are such a hassle trying to remove, and I've never had any luck with removing pencil marks. Some people use the Hera tool, but I can't see that for beans!!! I've even played with chalk pouncing and chalk pencils, but they're a nightmare to remove from white. What were you thinking of using, because I'll try anything at this point!!

I love learning about the different feet out there. I have a question. I tried doing some "mctavishing" with some tiny thread like that. I was using bottom line thread. I loved how fine it was. I also had thread breakage about every.5 min. I was using a thread net. Is this thread stronger? I would like something strong but super fine. My dealer told me thread like that is just too fine for a long arm. Also, what did you use in the bobbin for both the fine thread and the monofilament? Thank you for the help.

    Hey Angela! The wool quilt looks great, just the right level of detail and the quilt is just beautiful. A challenging quilt.... I have a quilt on my frame right now, for my Mom..... no pressure right!? The quilt is a the Giant Dahlia (pattern from Sondra Millard shesgotmojo.com ). The quilt was a challenge to define and took a bit of work to understand, piece and complete - It’s really beautiful and will be a Mom hit when it’s done. Right now, my Mom is patiently waiting for the new arrival and I am mustering up my stitching powers to dive in and get it done. Once I start, I’m sure it will go well, sometime you just have to start...... well maybe this week when I am done assembling Feathers from Margot Languedoc designs, for my daughter.... yea, this was ‘the year of the quilt’ for my family. It’s been great, and you have been my inspiration and tutor. The you tubes and web site have been a really helpful. So, thank you for helping me discover a new love. ❤️

    I've got 16 baltimore album quilt blocks that I started to quilt by the block, by hand, before my child #2 was born. umm 23 years ago! eeep! I think it's about time to finish it but I only got two or three of the blocks done, before it went into the ufo bin. would it look off if I quilted the rest by machine? or should I stick with hand work.

      Whatever it takes to get it finished! I'd say just do the rest by machine so you can enjoy it!

    Just a thought. I never would have thought to actually quilt a wool quilt. Applique quilting is not something I've tried. So, I'm curious as to what kind of batting and backing were selected for this quilt. Was this quilt intended as a bed quilt or to be displayed on a wall?

    Are you stitching with ONE hand? If so, how long did it take you to be so perfect? I need four hands, two on handle bars, one to hold my design in place which is on upper right side, and one to hold magnifying glass. 😥

    I'm really stuck on a quilt and I would appreciate any ideas that you have to offer! I have the last quilt top that my great grandmother put together and I am planning on quilting it and giving it to my mom as a gift but I have no idea what to do with it. It is mostly made up of big white blocks that she has embroidered and strips between each embroidered block. There is so much empty space in each block and I don't have a clue how I should quilt it. Any suggestions?

    I did a Christmas quilt (10 years ago) and have been paralyzed about how to quilt it. It has a lot of appliqué and embellishments and very, very busy.

    What SPI did you use? My client wants to see the thread color, which is a challenge, as well.

    If we use wool on a quilt, can we still wash the quilt or will the wool shrink?

  • @kelleymckenzie7030

    I am about to quilt my first wool applique too and am terrified because I have been told you cant take any stitching out or it will damage the quilt. Did you have to un-quilt any of this one?

    I have a Bjorn Bear quilt that I need to get done but I can't stitch in the ditch because the seams are pressed open and I am still really new with free motion and quilting in general, this is only my second full sized quilt, so I keep putting it off. It isn't for anyone in particular so I really have no reason to be scared but I guess we are all our own worst critics.

      I’m taking Angela’s advice and draw the designs over and over. I️ practice at least a half hour a day. It seems to be working. My goal is to master the swirl!
