The gearbox is a Shimano Alfine 8 speed AFAIK. Heavy, but very reliable. The gear range wasn't enough to replace a derailleur drivetrain, and they weighed a lot, so it was not good off road (Adding a couple of kg to the rear hub makes for loads of unsprung mass, so the suspension wouldn't work anything like as well). One dead giveaway is that you can see on the video that the shifts where cable is pulled to the shifter go to higher gears rather than lower ones (Like the rapid rise/low normal derailleurs that were available around the same time - the reversed derailleur spring worked brilliantly paired with dual control levers). The Alfine 11 speed hub that followed it had just about enough gear range to replace a 2x drivetrain, but came with a few teething issues like jumping out of 9th gear intermittently, but was really let down by 1st and especially 2nd feeling horribly, power sappingly spongy, probably because those gears used more than one roller clutch in series on the driveline. The hub alone weighed more than an entire derailleur drivetrain including cranks too. It had Shimano's first 11 speed shifter though and they reversed the cable pull direction to match conventional derailleurs for that model. Still have one in my garage that'll be built into a wheel if the derailleur drivetrain on my commuter bike ever dies.

I got put off with the contant breaks and repairs, costs etc.... Allen Millyard, you are a true genius and you deserve credit and reconnection at the highest level. I reckon every downhill cyclist would aspire to buy an Allen Millyard bike if they were available. You need an investor!!
Excellent video Allen. I’d have loved that 10 yrs ago when my hips hadn’t fallen to bits 😆. No chain with grit to wear away the drivetrain, why don’t we see them all over the place?....price of manufacture maybe? Loving all these videos though Allen. Thanks again for sharing your wonderful designs.
Probably a combination of weight and the MTB industry making its money by keeping their products unreliable and servicing intensive. We went from simple, reliable, easy to service open bath oil and coil suspension forks that would work well, literally for years with no rebuilding needed at all in the late '90s, to significantly more expensive forks that need to be pulled apart on a monthly basis to stop them chewing their own internals up as the miniscule amount of oil used in assembling the fork dries/leaks out and they stop holding pressure and start scoring.
Absolutely phenominal, on another level. I'm completely in awe of your mechanical engineering and design. Pure genius. Thank you very much Regards Gareth Wiltshire. Quality. Gratitude
This bike is a brilliant design and incorporates the solutions to the Achilles heel of bicycles, the drivetrain. An enclosed drive and a internal gearbox. Manufactures keep slapping on derailleurs which are expendable. The best bikes have enclosed drives but I’ve never seen one on a mountain bike. Good on yer Allen!
That is the coolest the mountain bike I have ever seen! You're really good at making mountain bikes maybe you should try making motorcycles. Oh wait a I forgot who I was talking to 😁 How much does it weigh and how much does the weight matter when you're downhill racing? Every time I watch one of your videos I'm always impressed with your work. Thank you
Best Dad ever! Don't get me wrong. I love my dad, but this is absolutely awesome. If you are ever going to do a production run of Mk2. I hereby sign up. Respect Mr. Millyard!
bike industry is mostly pr driven and not innovation driven. same components bolted on the same frames with slight variations over and over again. developing something radical like this is really expensive and risky for a big company
If I'm hearing Allen right, the whole thing is welded 7075 T6 triangulated in the style of Ducatis for some unreal rigidity. Marketing would hate to say "we have a revolutionary new bike that weighs 40% more than everything else", and Manufacturing would tell you that reliably welding 7075 on a large scale is expensive in labour, expertise and equipment. But if you mean the enclosed drivetrain, a somewhat similar alternative has existed commercially for a couple of years at least in the form of the hipster Pinion Gearbox!
@@icehawk3442 The 7075 alloy is unweldable unless using very experimental metal fillers developed in 2019. But the 7005 is weldable using 5356 filler with excellent results. And great advantage no need of post welding thermic treatment, you forget it 15 days and it has its 350 Mpa back. So I guess that structure was made in 7005, the best alu for the DIY guy with no thermic treatments ovens in his shed.
Love the design.Your son must be proud.I think the industry saw it as a threat so dissmissed the idea.I no that happening to a late bronze sculpter friend of mine.

Its a wonderful downhill mountain bike - really well thought out. Thanks for sharing a great video too showing all the detail nice and clear and up close too.

ill bet it ends up with three pedals ,,,, not cos it needs them , just because he can. As impressive as the 1 is , the 2 is just another level. Thinking about it , id have been tempted to write 2 as 11 almost like Roman numerals , but knowing it actually reads 11 ,, and as we all know from Spinal Tap, thats just one better than even 10.

Keirnon Grainger, as this question clearly wasn’t directed at you, I’m unsure of why you have felt the need to get involved. Are you Mr. Millyard’s representative?

I met Allen at an NPS race in about 2007 and he took the time to talk me through this bike. I even had a quick go on it. How has this guy not got more recognition, he is a certified genius. With his designs, engine conversions and things like this bike, this is what made Britian Great. I wish I had a fraction of his inventive tallent.
What a piece of kit. As beautiful as it is brilliant. Looking forward to the next vid.
What !. Amazing, Allen you need to write a book on all of this. Your genius needs to be preserved.
i need a ghost writer but yes it would be a cool thing to do
@@AllenMillyard Alistair Walker. Best ghost writer to the bike industry.
Beautiful - aesthetically and mechanically!
Can't wait to see more about the single-side swing arm one!
I must say, You and your Creations give a Splendid example of Creativity, Ingenuity, Stubbornness and Humility to us your watchers.
Just as stunning as everything else that you make! Thanks for sharing.
I just realised I have sat here for the last 4 minutes and 58 seconds with my mouth open like Paul MCKenna has hypnotised me or something. I was quite pleased that I just made a bracket out of some mild steel. Just amazing.
brilliant piece of engineering wish i was motivated like you who made the bike frame
But remember,
a wish is the lowest form of human achievement. It is wanting something without putting out the effort to achieve it. And the most common.
GEORGE CLARKE Who made the frame? Allan made it. He made the whole thing. Les
Commenter Five: That’s me buggered then!
I can remember yous son letting me have a look at a national. It was truly amazing. . Still looks great today. Great Times and lots of fun. 😊
Hi Allen, beautiful quality build, would be intreauged to see how the gearbox works if possible. You keep pulling these surprises out "of stock".. mate thank you for giving us something decent to watch on a drizzly boring lock down day. Cheers, Alex.
I presume it's a CVT, but I'd love to know how Allen approached it since the examples I can find seem overly complex
Iirc it's a Shimano Alfine unit.
imagine what life would be like if our school teachers were as softly spoken, intelligent and enthusiastic as Allen, almost brings a tear to your eye
This man has a gift from God, this man IS a gift from God!
This man is god
You're an absolute bloody genius Allen! This bike absolutely blew me away when I first read about it glad to see it again and hear about it from the man himself
WOW!!! and I thought I had done something when I put a water bottle holder on my 80's era mountain bike
Your son is so lucky to have such a dad !Your bikes are wonderful and awesome ! Cheers form France !
The swing arm / brake just completely blew my brain to bits it’s like some sort of sorcery to me lol
I remember seeing this bike featured in MBUK. Such a cool design, way ahead of it's time. Love it
Absolutely awesome, I wish I could have one!
Allen Millyard absolute genius, he normally creates motorcycles but everything he makes are works of art and pure magic. Legend.
Brilliant, been waiting for a reboot of this.
You sir are truly an amazing dad an awesome bike builder and a real legend...
This bike is a work of art that you can use.. it looks stunning and is very well built. Love the motor bike style everything.. the frame, swing arm, the twin drive system and especially the rear wheel setup...
Its such a shame the rest of the world cant get easy access to your creations as I like many would give a left nut to own a beautiful and useable bike like this... let alone the other bike you built..
(Really glad this came up in my search) for once well done UA-cam genuinely...
I am so impressed from the calmness of your voice!of course everything you make seem really impressive but i wonder what you are doing for a living in order to have all that time to put effort in making your ideas true and keep calm and easy personality?
Truly amazing craftsmanship, I'm a mountain biker and I'm blown away with all your videos, moto or pedaling. Respect!
Amazing Allen, is there anything that you can’t build?
Ian I think the only stipulation is 2 wheels.
@@andrewmarkham7355 havent got room for cars
@@AllenMillyard can you try building Ironman?
@@AllenMillyard Do you think it would be possible to craft a Honda V4 into a V6 ? That would make one hell of a track bike (VFR 400 into 600) ?
wow! so glad i found your videos, now I'm in covid lockdown in Melbourne Australia. loving the engineering content and explaining in such a way that most could understand i think also.
Imagine Allen being your Dad and doing metal work projects in first grade highschool.
It would be cool but i love my dad more
My dad was a pianist and a good one too. To my great regret, I never really tried to learn piano because I couldn’t compete.
That’s the snag. It’s (really) hard for talented dads to bring their kids into their realm.
Quality. Gratitude
Dad I need new bike
Allen : say no more .
Why would anyone dislike this video, this is a great piece of engineering. The rear hub alone got my vote.
Just amazing engineering!
Baffling how simple that enclosed rear end is in theory and how it's not been widely adopted. Great video Allan and look forward to the next.
Would be interesting to know what this bike is weighing 🤔
Not very interesting. Downhill bikes weigh a ton.
Oh wait a I forgot who I was talking to 😁
How much does it weigh and how much does the weight matter when you're downhill racing? Every time I watch one of your videos I'm always impressed with your work. Thank you
By far this is the greatest bit of MTB kit I've ever seen! I mean this is the stuff my accident prone self needs in the worst of ways...
Beautifully engineered.
Wow, you really have put those top manufacturers to shame. Your ground-breaking innovations are truly epic. Congratulations 👍
Beautiful!! Can the frame also be used as a highway bridge? Awesome work.
Best Dad ever! Don't get me wrong. I love my dad, but this is absolutely awesome. If you are ever going to do a production run of Mk2. I hereby sign up. Respect Mr. Millyard!
Allen, where do your talents end? I've had to watch this 3 times as I just found it enthralling!
Allen, you should be living Offshore by now,if you get my gist!wonderful engineering genius!pleasure to watch.
We walk in your shadow.
Absolutely insanely inspiring engineering there sir. You are so unassuming, which adds to your charm. Thanks you for these videos
Why aren't these everywhere? What am I missing? Oh, and please could you make an electric bike!
Keep up the good work.
Peter Jackson lol, electric.
Its was probably too heavy
bike industry is mostly pr driven and not innovation driven. same components bolted on the same frames with slight variations over and over again. developing something radical like this is really expensive and risky for a big company
Where can I sell one of my kidneys to buy this bike......... absolute genius. The bike too.
Absolutely genius - I love it - the 001 and 002 both look, and no doubt ride, superb - (as a mountain biker and Ducati owner) I particularly love the trellis frame and drive chain inside the rear swinging arm. Its a wonderful downhill mountain bike - really well thought out. Thanks for sharing a great video too showing all the detail nice and clear and up close too.
I think e-bikes could use that design of gearbox, they seem to be a bit confused at the moment.
it adds more weight and they are already heavy, so that is probably one reason why u are not seeing them
Mr. Millyard, as a great fan i can tell you your doing not only fantastic craftmanship but pieces of art. Fantastic, genius, i love it.👍
(sorry for my bad english)
Watching from Germany
Amazing. Just imagine what that would be like with electric motor assistance......
Gareth R was thinking the exact same thing
This bicycle impresses me even more than his amazing motorcycles.
I don't know anything about the bicycle racing world, but I hope Allen made money from the to me unique construction features.
ill bet it ends up with three pedals ,,,, not cos it needs them , just because he can.
As impressive as the 1 is , the 2 is just another level. Thinking about it , id have been tempted to write 2 as 11 almost like Roman numerals , but knowing it actually reads 11 ,, and as we all know from Spinal Tap, thats just one better than even 10.
😁👍
tom thompson my mate bred 3 legged chickens,as he,his wife and his son,all liked a leg,I asked him what it tasted like, he said ‘ I dunno? I ain’t caught one yet !’...
You make me proud the English ingenuity is alive and well. Keep on making great things and never give up on your dreams of great things to come. Good day fella too.
I hope you don’t mind me asking two questions, why has nothing happened with this in 13 years and, are you planning on making / selling them?
Graham Watts if he sold one for 2k-ish I would totally buy it
Keirnon Grainger, as this question clearly wasn’t directed at you, I’m unsure of why you have felt the need to get involved. Are you Mr. Millyard’s representative?
The amazing engineering that comes out of your tiny shed just blows my mind. Remarkable!!
I can’t even imagine what Allen could do to the Ebike and E street bike segment if he were so inclined.
That would be one to see 😯
Every video I watch,I'm even more amazed,allen,you're a genius!!
How can you have contributed so much to British engineering and not be recognised....you should be a Sir by now
Because are government decided to distroy the British engineering trade and handed it over to rest of the world.
Men like this are becoming rare in Britain.
Allen , just seen your mountain bikes. Simply amazing. Your just what the UK needs keep up the fantastic work.
Imagine taking it to a bike shop for a service 😆
brittenv1000 I hear Allen built in a little elf sealed and living inside the swing arm that does a good job of the maintenance chores, if you can keep him awake. Bet the guy at the bike shop wouldn’t be expecting that.
I met Allen at an NPS race in about 2007 and he took the time to talk me through this bike. I even had a quick go on it. It is bonkers clever and makes the mainstream manufacturers look boring a conservative. The shock itself is amazingly clever. I think it is a military design from a Challenger tank. It’s a crime that this bike did not get more coverage than it did. It is an engineering masterpiece. 👍🏼
