I think that this should be named as one of the best coming-of-age films.
Also, frank.... he really lost it.

This is probably the best movie review I’ve ever seen! I loved the connections you made and the way you worded everything. It never occurred to me how metaphorical and symbolic that opening tennis match is. Excellent video!

Dude, this is a fantastic review and analysis! You're a super-bright kid; I watched/read lots of reviews from "professional" "grown-up" reviewers, and NONE of them got that the movie was really about kids realizing that their parents aren't gods, but just regular, fallible people...people that don't have all the answers and are just as clueless as everyone else...people that are often (in Jeff Daniels's case) full of shit, too! Keep up the great work, man. Subscribed and I look forward to watching your other videos! Cheers!

Excellent review, Oscar!! I have been on a Baumbach Binge this weekend, and feel like all of the movies I have watched so far are cautionary tales about regretting not being more free in your 20s, and the disappointment of being close to, but ultimately not quite making it to, success later in life, however that person defines it. And rather than reinventing oneself ... blaming and wallowing. Criticizing and sizing everyone up. Deciding whether their success is “fair” or deserved. And depicting how destructive and poisonous a mindset that is.
I like how this story shows through Walt how this mindset can start from such a young age, via misguided role models, and reinforcing patterns. But ultimately the possible redemption of seeing the flawed humanity of those models, and forging your own path.
I feel like the vulgarity of Frank’s reactions were an important depiction of the intense pain and suffering that divorce sometimes or often inflicts on offspring. Some people have healthy divorces, between two well-adjuster adults who have decided it just does not work, but that is far less common than usual. If people had healthy boundaries, good communication, and mutual respect, a lot would not be getting divorced in the first place. I am in no way anti-divorce whatsoever. I just see the aftermath for the offspring with some people I love, and even if it happens when they are a bit older (high school / college aged when it happened), it is still a lot for them to process and move through, well into adulthood.
To bring it back to Walt, I love the message that you are more than the sum of your parents, you can face them, you can face your fears, you can see them as humans, not to be lionized or demonized, even with all their flaws, while still holding your boundary, and standing up to their unjust demands, no matter your age.
Thanks for your review, it was satisfying to hear/watch, after just having watched the movie!

Have you seen the Meyerowitz Stories? A lot of the very same themes and concepts, right down to repeated scenes (dickering over whose book is whose), but with a 40-something son, and a 70-something father. I don’t mind this repetition, it shows how these mindsets and behaviors carry on through different stages of life.

Nice review! I really liked your way of portraying the characters and interpreting the relations between them. I would loved you to have explored more the younger brother as well. It is very interesting that he tries so hard to fell and look like an adult (a bad coping, struggling adult). Also, while you watch the film you get the sense that the characters are somehow empty although they try so hard to be full and completed. And at the end of the day, they turn to each other to get that sense that they are completed. Did you also had this feeling?
Again, it was a lovely review!!
