    The scene where he says ''déguelasse'' is so great, it crystallizes the fact that the father is so pretentious and clumsy : at that point where his whole family is shaken, instead of using the occasion to bring the family closer, he makes an obscure pedantic quote that his wife doesn't understand and even he doesn't, i.e., dégeulasse means disgusting, not bitch. Great writing, great pacing, great movie.

      I also got a kick out of that scene - he's so absorbed in literature and cinema that he couldn't help but quote Godard's "Breathless." It's the same deal when he offered an original copy of Mailer's "The Naked and the Dead" to his son in the hospital. Baumbach did a great job of showing how the arts and letters can divorce people from reality.

      @@konami1979 bang on! I think this is so true of anything in the entertainment / knowledge sector (books, movies, plays, musicals, heck even science: pyschology, biology, economics - they all try to explain or portray human behaviour and sometimes (I definitely have) consciously or unconsciously individuals try/do mimic these behaviours because it's within their recollection/memory or they think they're supposed to. Some of it's pretentious and some is not, which in my opinion is what divorces people from the external reality and the internal reality - how we authentically act and how we fabricate actions/reactions.

    One of the best movies about "after divorce " post trauma, profoundly sensitive about the children's view of separation reality ....
    And good view of the parents getting lost, confused, and aggressive,....in spite of loving their sons....

    I think The Squid and The Whale and The Ice Storm are the best movies about being raised amidst an exploded family nucleus.

    This movie may be the prequel to Marriage Story starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson that came out last month. Both movies were directed by the same director, and maybe a retelling of his life. This movie is on my bucket list but Marriage Story was fantastic story telling.

      Just watched the Squid and the Whale and I can say Marriage Story is a polished Squid and the Whale.

    • @seanmatthewking
      @seanmatthewking 4 роки тому +7

      @@luismarioguerrerosanchez4747 The Squid and the Whale is more about the kids and their reaction to the separation and how that affects their relationships with their parents. Marriage Story is primarily about the couple's relationship. They both deal with divorce, but they're much different stories.

    • @luismarioguerrerosanchez4747
      @luismarioguerrerosanchez4747 4 роки тому +1

      @@seanmatthewking Yeah, it reminds me of a quote by François Truffaut where he says that making L'Enfent Sauvage was a revelation to him by being the first film where he identified with the adult figure in contrast to Les 400 Coups where he identified with the kid.
      I believe The Squid and the Whale is Baumbach's cry from his parents divorce and how it affected him whereas Marriage Story is him becoming the father he once resented and understanding the hard time they had trying to raise the children after the marriage is over.
      So while I liked Squid and the Whale alot I think Marriage Story is more mature and better written (I think the second act of Squid is subpar with the rest of the film).

    0:50 Just now realizing that thumb to the mouth thing is a reference to Godard's "Breathless" when Jean-Paul Belmondo does the same thing then says "bogie" while looking at a poster of Humphrey Bogart

    This movie is so critical for understanding the 50% of American marriages that end up in divorce. We have to take care of the health and mental health of these kids whose world has been fractured by the greatest idols we have- our parents. Broken emotional issues tend to pass from generation to generation unless a proactive response is taken like victor frankel describes in man’s search for meaning. I had a college professor which took these basic relationship principles on as either altruistic and authentic or the self interested pursuit of personal gain. It’s sad to think that people are with their own self interest self promotion and sunk cost in relationships and look past things like true altruism and true love. Noah bomback is a genius of screenplay and dialogue. Power affection and the pursuit for infinite freedom of our youth are so eloquently captured in this flick. We have a whole generation that has been taught to just distract themselves and “go play on their devices “ instead of this newly formed sense of pain with the human skill of conversation and the art of conversation.

    *This is a Another one of the Movies that has all this Random Ideology going on and you are somehow suppose to know what the interpretation is....Meanwhile the rest of us are getting board waiting for the point...I saw a Howard Stern show that had Dave Grohl on it and they were going to play the song "My Hero" and Howard,Robin start saying what the meaning of the song is..and after everybody says what they "know " the song is about....Dave says No its not about that..its about this...Just because you think you know ...Doesn't mean you do*
