just stumbled upon this video upon countless search of videos about hopelessness and this wow-ed my mind!! i just happened to recently rewatch little miss sunshine and i love how you describe everyone's suffering and their journey to acceptance, and also LOVE the ending quote when it said that "in this struggle, one must imagine the hoovers happy"
Little Miss Sunshine got me through some hard times and was a very pivotal piece of art in my life. Recently, I lost my religion after leaving a cult, and absurdism is the only philosophy that was able to keep me here and help me make it through losing everything and having to face nihilism for the first time. Seeing those two things combined in this video essay was so lovely, interesting, and eye opening. Little Miss Sunshine really was my first introduction to absurdism, I just didn’t have the words or concepts to understand it :) This is a great essay, thank you!
This is a banger, but I want to argue about suffering. Art Spiegelman takes this on in Maus: his father suffered unspeakably in the Holocaust, but when he appears in the early pages of Maus, at a time when Art is first thinking about creating what became his masterpiece, he's a cranky old man. Eventually we see his racism, his bitterness, his pettiness. He's not a good person. The point is unmistakable, and I think we can all recognize it. Most people have to deal with suffering, but that doesn't always make them better. Often they become worse. Or they remain the person they always were. The truth is, suffering is meaningless, and not recognizing this truth can lead to some very dark places, as we now see in the way the state of Israel politicizes the Holocaust for their own ends. Now I'm arguing this way because I recognize the truth in what you said about suffering in this video, both the suffering depicted in the film and your own. But I'm saying I don't think it's suffering as such, in any of these cases (as well as in the suffering in my own life, which has been considerable), which leads to personal transformation, or even insight. I think that, at most, we can say that suffering can peel away our superficial self-deceptions, if we let it, and reveal us more deeply to ourselves. But we then have to act on what we discover. I think a lot of people decide that's just not what they want to do, so they cover the truth back up and return to their self-deceptions. There's nothing to guarantee any particular outcome in this. That seems to imply it's all chance, but I wouldn't say that either. Honestly I doubt there's any real answer to this question, or at least not an answer that can remove the mystery so as to make the full truth evident to our rational minds. I think this is the point where one can begin to look at spiritual explanations for things, but that does open up another whole can of worms. I do think the inner structure of the world is what you can call "love," so there is in everything an inner dynamic towards acceptance, communion, and care. But that's the sort of thing that can be so easily misunderstood I'm reluctant to talk much about it.
Honestly, this is an excellent point and very well said, thanks for the thoughtful reply. A couple things based on what you said. I think your overall argument of suffering not being the thing that causes transformation is fair. I think you and I are getting at the same idea that it's all about how you deal with the inevitable suffering that is important. You can choose to be jaded, nihilistic, or mad at the world. Or you can choose to examine your suffering, accept it, find meaning and grow through it. That's what I wanted to convey in the video. It could very well be, like you said, that suffering only reveals the person underneath. But there is still value in looking at your own suffering with kinder eyes. Also want to emphasize that I am only speaking to personal suffering that comes with life, not the societal suffering brought on by oppression and war and corruption, etc. So the holocaust, or genocide in Israel, these things are decidedly avoidable, and I am cetainly not qualified to say how the suffering and trauma from such extreme examples would affect a person. I also have not read Maus but really really want to.
i had forgotten about this movie. i have been working on a short film for Uni and have been suffering from a lot of Imposter sindrom. as I sat down to draw some concept art I put on this video to listen to and it really helped. your interpretation and magical words definitely helped me fight the imposter off at least for the day, and for that I thank you
I think you could argue that the grandpa was battling to stay relevant. Only Olive thought he was still valuable as a guiding figure and when given the chance to be that figure, the grandpa was able to shine. He was positive and encouraging(not superficially like his son), sober, and invested with whomever he was speaking. However, his brand of these qualities miss the mark in a variety of ways and can come across as out of touch with the family and society. Though despite the grandpa dying, leaving a fair amount of film time left, his absence isn't all that obvious, rather his influence is still felt between the family. Zooming out a little, it's interesting because the grandpa will often give advice similar to what the uncle, would later give when on the pier. In reference to Proust having suffered... concludes with "do what you love and fuck the rest". How the father desperately clings to what success looks like, often steamrolling his family to make a point, only to realize that his family is his greatest success. So on and so on.
