CDs are making a comeback. Believe it or not, there is a new technology through which you can now pack 1.6 petabytes of data into one CD! Once considered obsolete, CDs are making a triumphant comeback, defying expectations. Recently, researchers in China have developed this revolutionary CD technology, enabling a single CD to hold a staggering 1.6 petabytes or simply 16 lakh gigabytes of data (Pg. no. 2). To put it into perspective, to store such colossal amounts of data, companies like Google typically require a server room the size of a small warehouse. But the question is will this technology could be succesful? What will be the price of it and ofcourse will it be available to the masses? Let's find out!!

Capacity isn't the only thing that can bring back CD's. What about R/W speed? What about scratches issue which we face after continues use of CD..

For archive/backup purpose that would be killer. Even cloud providers will be helped immensely and it will cut down the data center size.
Only lastly 2007/2008 born children know what is CD as well as DVD in India. I am 2007's and till now have CD and DVDs kept properly and even have Parent's wedding videos but on CD not DVD. But with changing time, In Class 5 (2018) I have transferred the CD data on pendrives like the wedding videos. But currently there's no any CD/DVD Drive in any PC or Laptop of mine and only have one SD (Standard Definition) DVD Player of Sony S700 something model, which is in store room and works fine. But really, The oldest CD of 2006 still works properly even today.

@@thisisme616 Really what were the day, when I was 3/4 years old I use to make the CDs bad of Nursery Rhymes and papa use to buy again and again. I used to even watch my parents wedding videos 🤭 again again on CD, And some DVD movies also I have. But I don't know, DVDs came out around 1998 and why in India it didn't become much popular, The first DVD bought in my home was in 2013/2014. So lately... Do you have any idea?

You can store more data on disk drives as you claimed. However, the limitations stem from the rotational technology they use. The issue isn't with storage capacity itself, but with the inherent problems of rotating components. Rotating devices tend to have shorter lifespans because the mechanical parts are prone to wear and tear over time. Additionally, disk drives are more susceptible to physical damage from shocks and vibrations, which can lead to data loss.
Moreover, disk drives consume more power and generate more heat compared to solid-state drives (SSDs), which can affect the overall energy efficiency and cooling requirements of a system. They also have slower data access speeds due to the mechanical nature of the read/write heads having to move to the correct location on the disk platter. This results in longer latency and slower performance, especially when dealing with large amounts of data or performing random access operations.
In summary, while disk drives offer high storage capacities at relatively low costs, their mechanical nature introduces several disadvantages, including durability issues, susceptibility to physical damage, higher power consumption, heat generation, and slower performance compared to SSDs.

CD- emotion of childhood.. playing it like flying disc, seeing it flying gives so satisfaction.
If this succeed then it can be a great thing for gaming consoles. There was a time of consoles like ps2, ps3, xbox 360 when you didn't needed to install the game onto the console from the disc you've bought. The entire game used to be fit on the disc. This was the time when blu ray discs were new in the market.
If this technology succeeds then definitely not a petabyte, but creating a small size version of these discs which can store atleast like 500gb of data would be enough to saving the feeling we used to get from using discs and making collections (ahhh good old days)...
And yeah ofcourse sharing your games would also be a lot easier.
And the last line is why these console manufacturers won't include an optical drive!
Also get ready to lose all your data. I have faced many situations losing data due to disct corrupt even trying some sorts of liquid spray for rubbing wouldn't work lol.

CD was so popular in my opinion: it gave you the power to watch a full movie without commercials anytime. Also for first time a person had the power to just pause the movie and not hold the pee and wait for the commercial 😂😂. Good old days.

The price should be near 20k rupees or 30k rupees for both The CD and the Reader together
I think you don't know about storage device even only 8TB NVMI SSDs cost nearly around 1lakh rupees with 10gb/s transfer speed
And this new CD has 1.6petabyte storage which is 200,000times more than these SSDs
I am more concerned about the reading speed.

Yesterday only I used my CD drive on my pc.. Even 2004 ka dvd vcd was working smoothly... CD technology was awesome

With better storage comes the ability to store more different kinds of information. We humans on an individual level might not be able to generate that much data, but AI can. On this bigger drives AI can create, store, read and based on that create more big data like entire DNA sequence, entire human biology, neural network of human brain, a detailed 3D map of all planets, a timelaps of evolution of life on the planet, time lapse of universal events not just with visual information but info on its biology, chemistry and even physics. Basically a virtual traversable universe inside a Compact Disc. All this is possible if this big storage devices and data generating AIs are readily available to all.
So to put a price tag, it should eventually cost as much as a normal CD would cost.

More than storage capacity its important how fast you can write or retrieve and search data. If that speed is slow than these CDs will only be good for long term archiving and will not replace hard-drives

One problem with optical disks (CD/DVD) was that they were very prone to scratches and hence being corrupted. Hope this new one takes care of this problem.
