The problem that since Mumbai along with Shreesthaan (Thane, a part of the larger Thane district) forms an island (Shatshasti Island), it cannot grow horizontally is not a problem at all. It is a fabricated excuse by the politicians, authority and builder nexus to build skyscrapers, high-rise buildings and coastal roads on expensive Mumbai land and even worse bridges and roads and spiralling interchanges in the ocean(e.g. Bandra-Worli sea link plus coastal road) and on the riverbeds along the rivers+nalas (for e.g. Navi Mumbai coastal road) to make quick and huge money at the expense of destroying nature (and its beauty), of sane living in and of sane development of Mumbai.. Stop building bridges in the ocean (from Bandra to Versova). Stop the desecration of Juhu Seaface with immediate effect. Save the Juhu Seaface, a 7 km long seaface, which is the most visited beach in Sindhusthaan, with immediate effect. The FSI must be fixed at 1 or less and the height of buildings must be fixed at 98 feet or less both depending on the natural underground water-table level (this will control the population explosion and keep population at the right level/sq km. Also this will prevent an already worldwide hazardous phenomenon called 'the sick building effect' which is because of zero sunlight penetration on the ground, which leads to death due to cancer, kidney failure, TB, chronic respiratory disorders amongst others. Also this will prevent an already worldwide catastrophe i.e. flooding that happens because higher FSI and taller buildings lead to larger underground foundations of those buildings which leads to less space for water both in the rocky aquifers and the soil which leads to a catastrophic rise in the water-table which leads to flooding. Also this will prevent tripling or quadrupling of electricity bills which happens because tall buildings lead to almost no daylight penetration on the ground or inside the houses or offices which leads to usage of electricity throughout the day for light and air-conditioning which leads to multiple times higher bills. ) . The island (seperated by the Ulhas river) must be connected to its surrounding cities that are Navi Mumbai, Shreesthaan (Thane), Vasai-Virar by bridges across the river ( bridges already existing and also Trans Harbour Link across Ulhas river's brack waters near Panvel creek) and further by roads (roads already existing) and metros including 'water metros' (not existing) for e.g. as in Surat and Kerala and 'bus metros' (not existing) and 'train metros' (not existing) and 'a/c compartment in local train' (not existing. No need to have an entire a/c local as many commuters can't afford it. For those who can, an a/c compartment or two is sufficient. An entire a/c local runs empty most of the time and hence can't afford to give the frequency of 1 train/3 minutes) within Mumbai and to Shreesthaan (Thane), Kalyan-Dombivli, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Badlapur, Ambernath, Vasai-Virar. Not by making insane coastal roads (including bridges) in the ocean and on the beaches destroying all the open spaces (beaches) and beautiful (happiness-giving) views (the sea, the horizon, the sky, the sunset) and the underwater flora and fauna (including planktons that light up the sea at night) forming the entire seaface. For e.g. as at the Sabarmati River Front and the Ghats of Ganga and Sharayu river. The Worli Seaface is gone. Completely desecrated. There must not be any bridge in the ocean (from Bandra to Versova: Stop the desecration of Juhu Seaface with immediate effect. Save Juhu Seaface a 7 km long seaface, which is the most visited beach in Sindhusthaan, with immediate effect ) or on the beaches or shore areas or hills/mountains, to obstruct and hinder beautiful views from the beaches or from anywhere inland. There must be unobstructed, unhindered views,as there are now, (except the Bandra-Worli Sea Link plus a new addition now the coastal road which makes ugly the view from Bandra, Mahim, Worli). Also from such beautiful places as beaches, seashores and others, the skyscrapers and/or high-rise buildings must not be visible. Mumbai is the number 1 tourist (local i.e. from the city, from the state, national, international) destination in Sindhusthaan because of its hills including Andheri (Andhara Giri or Dongar which is 200 feet tall, monolithic, mesozoic era, 6.6 crore years old, the only one inside a city in the whole world, one of the only two anywhere in the whole world, heritage site ), 6 rivers (Ulhas river which forms the Shreesthaan (Thane) creek and the Vasai creek to form the Shatshasti island, Mahim river i.e. the so-called mithi river, the Oshiwara river, the Shreesthaan (Thane)/Mulund river, the Dahisar river, the Poisar river), streams+ tributaries+ rivulets (nalas) all over the city, 19 beaches, 104 sq km National park (the only one inside a city in the whole world. Plus a sibling 'The Tungareshwar National Wildlife Sanctuary' right across the Ulhas river in the Shreesthaan (Thane) district. The bungalows built at Yeoor Hills, the Tikkuji Ni Wadi, the roads across the forests to go from one side to the other must be taken out with immediate effect. Only the access roads for the adivasis i.e. the original forest dwellers to their padas i.e. small villages must be allowed strictly.), Shreesthaan (Thane) creek National wildlife sanctuary, Aarey i.e. a part of the National Park (including forests which the Modi/Fadnavis gov converted into a development zone from a no-development zone to build the metro 3 car shed by passing a legislation i.e. law after the courts and the National Green Tribunal stopped their work, Chhota Kashmir garden+lake, film city's lake. But all business and infrastructural activities like Film City, Aarey Milk Colony, Metro car shed+depot, 5 star hotel Renaissance or Westin, Royal Palms must be taken out with immediate effect), mangrove forests (saplings planted, that too in some other place, cannot compensate for uprooted trees grown up over 15 to 50 years or more and for destroying the natural biodiversity and it's habitat at the present location), wetlands (including 'khaadis' and mangroves along the nalas), natural and heritage man-made saltpans, more than 88 lakes, 150 ancient caves, more than 950 gardens and parks of Mumbai, playgrounds (maidans), sports complexes, swimming pools, recreation clubs, stadiums, beaches of Vasai-Virar, Palghar and Raigad amongst other tourist attractions. The value of Mumbai's natural resources of aesthetic concern and/or man-made tourist attractions must be conserved by not making man-made structures (including skyscrapers, high-rise buildings, transportation infrastructure ) near it or visible from its location. People of Maharashtra must go to court and also do an andolan against the gov (Modi gov, Gadkari gov, Fadnavis gov, Shinde gov or Thackeray gov or Gandhi gov or Pawar gov or Kejriwal gov or Akhilesh gov or Mamata gov or any gov) and/or any authority (Ashwini Bhide authority whose husband left his job of an IAS officer and became a first generation prolific entrepreneur) or any builder (Ambani or Adani or Hiranandani or Birla or Tata or L&T or anyone) that plans and permits such purposeful desecration of natural beauty and, with immediate effect, get a permanent ban on desecration of and a permanent law for protection of natural resources of aesthetic concern i.e. natural beauty of our heritage state Maharashtra.

I work for a Korean company from India. Once I had the opportunity to attend an Technology show event in Seoul. There was a booth from this company as well. While setting up the booth by all the participating companies, there was little trash like paper cuttings, packaging materials, tapes, small pieces of wires etc. After the booth setup was done, I saw the company CEO picking trash along with other employees. I was really surprised. That incident changed my whole perspective of keeping cleanliness around us. Now I run a company and do not hesitate to clean the office every now and then.
It’s a hard pill to swallow but we Indians have a long way to go when it comes to cleanliness. Why should I do it mentality is very much prevalant, be it lower class or upper class. We just won’t do our part. There’s a genuine reason why other countries mock us.

The bad news is that india cities are among the worst I've been to. The good news is that I believe this can improve because indians are smart and 20 years ago china was dirty too but look at what chinese cities now.
Last year i was in Delhi preparing for UPSC. There was a park in front of my library, all the students so called 'UPSC aspirants' used to litter while there were 2 bins in the park. They can write an eight page essay on importance of clean environment but won't do their part. So it's not just the Government, we the citizens are also responsible.
When we see people throwing waste like this. We should call them out publicly then and there. But we don't want to make a scene there and tangle in unnecessary banter, so we sigh and ignore.

We don't have enough cities. All jobs are being created in same few cities. Small cities need to be developed so that, jobs can be moved there. Smaller cities are easy to maintain than few overpopulated cities.
My neighbours don’t pay Rs150 to the garbage collecting truck and instead throw it in the open. Owners of 2-3 storied buildings, “civilised” and “educated people”, throw the garbage in the open lands. How long can we blame the government.
I used to live in a very affluent south delhi neighbourhood. I started cleaning the area around my house regularly, seeing this, the people around me started throwing trash there expecting me to clean up after them. They were unreasonable to speak to. They even used public parks to dry clothes and threatened violence when confronted.
I think India should have a law about having to clean their neighborhood or specific areas in their city for small offences like in other countries, I have grown up watching popular media where the characters would hate the day they had this duty but did it anyway.

I can't throw garbage on the road. My consciousness doesn't allow me. Whenever I eat some snacks on the street and I can't find the dustbin to throw the wrapper in, in that case I put the wrapper in my pocket lol .

It's been over 2 years since I moved to Canada. I visited India 2 months ago and I found very difficult to find a hygiene (usable) public washroom in Gujarat which is claimed to be developed. Sad reality not many Indian citizens care about!
Canada is way more clean than india. I too am thinking to move there due to our garbage government and useless infrastructure. Reservation, And Many other factors. They don't care for our Citizens. All the parties are taking us for granted

Once I thought about how Singapore became such successful country and wondered why India which has similar problems can't solve them, then i realised that it was easier for Singaporean people to accept each other's nationalities and thrive together, but here in India we can't even accept the people of different caste/religion/ background whatever. It all starts with us citizens of this country, untill we become broad minded, our politicians will live on to loot us. The worse thing is that in our country people don't realise that those loans taken up by politicians that didn't make any progress but some how the funds landed in their pockets, ya all that lost funds , we have to pay them not those politicians.

The biggest issue I noticed with Indian cities: they are trying too much to copy the failed car-centric design of USA from the 50s and 60s, but cars do not scale well with population. There's barely any dedicated walking space in Indian cities, and many also lack metro networks or have half-baked metro networks like Bengaluru and Hyderabad. In China you could see them making similar mistakes early on, but now there are proper sidewalks (with a minimum 1.5 meter width standard), lots of nice public spaces, and very comprehensive public transit as well as high speed rail linking cities. I hope India learns from this rather than continuing to focus on car-centric infrastructure.

I hear your frustration. 40 years ago when I first went to China, I observed nearly insurmountable challenges including lack of housing, cleanliness and outdated and decrepit infrasctructure. Not to mention corruption which has plagued the culture for thousands of years. I won't go into details, but today the situation is a different world; quite the opposite and improving with each day. It was not easy. I too have visited Delhi and Mumbai several times and you are correct on all accounts. The Chinese are no more intelligent or capable as Indians. The big difference IMHO is China's leadership and strong policies which have not always been acceptable with that of the West, but nonetheless have propelled 700,000,000 out of poverty, plain and simple It would be in India's interests to put down whatever differences they may have with the Chinese and/or Chinese gov't and learn from them. Together India and China could accomplish so much more and really create an Asian Century.
@jamesho8820 You are correct. China of today is incredible in regard to economy, infrastructure, cleanliness, tech, education, civic pride and duty and it is government led. HOWEVER it is the citizens who must put policy into practice otherwise it won't work. India can once again be great but it will take a supremely MASSIVE and diametric way of governance/effort/lifestyle/priorities and overhaul by everyone

I emphasized on pollution, traffic, lack of sidewalks There is a street in Ranchi where thousands of students of age 8-18 pass by and there is no sidewalk for them, the roads are filled with trash and no one does anything And when i tell people why our country is doomed they call me anti-national, if i tell someone to throw the waste in the trash can instead of railway platform they'll say "hame kya ye saaf karna govt ka kaam hai" I'm so sick of it i wanna leave India and flee to a country with better living conditions ASAP

We as a country never understood the importance of well planned cities. Every developed country is highly urbanised because cities are lungs of an economy. The faltu rural romanticism like the "go back to villages" Of Gandhiji perfectly describes this problem. So after independence, except for few examples like chandigarh, gandhinagar, naya raypur etc we never built any planned cities. So when our economy grew rapidly everyone went to the same 4-5 metro cities. Those were never designed to house such a large population and as a result we see what a mess those have become. And even out of 4-5 metros Mumbai, chennai, new delhi, kolkata were all built by the British. Even today more than 55% of people live in rural areas so they are a big vote bank so politicians don't give a fuck about urban issues. We don't even have a proper civic sense of how to live in cities that's why we see so much stray animals wandering, trash, indiscipline etc.
We have few overpopulated cities, with continuing migration. So, no surprises about being dirty. We need to develop smaller cities, encourage reverse migration, remote work from home, move jobs out if big cities to smaller cities.

The difference I noticed between the before and after pictures of Indore was the added greenery and reduced road space. That's such a well thought out move. Most of India appears to be trying to ape the Americans and building a car centric society. Something that the Americans themselves are now trying to change, building more protected bicycle routes and reducing access to motor vehicles to the heart of the city.

Even though we youth can change our financial situation by starting to earn, I used to think how will we ever change where we come from.. because slum peoples are looked down upon. Neither the locals nor the outsiders care much for the city or their civic duties. Most people I met lack critical thinking and deductive reasoning. They lack any awareness about how their local municipal council works. Infact, most migrants strictly stick to the rules in the fear of being outcast and bullied. This whole rhetoric that it’s the migrants that disobey and cause problems is a myth.

For a country of 1.4 billion people, there is literally 0 cities in India which I could say would even compare with a tier 3 city in the west. Thats the sad reality. Bad infrastructure, bad traffic conditions, no walkable and cyclable cities, thrash everywhere you go, worst air quality, and the highest weather temperatures in all of the world. There are literally no redeemable qualities in any of the Indian cities

Another major reason our cities are unlivable is car-centric infrastructure planning - we focus on roads and flyovers rather than clean, efficient public transport, and walkable and cycle-able neighbourhoods with tree cover. Most of the great cities of the world (European cities especially) are not covered by flyovers, are an absolute joy to walk around, and make it easy to go anywhere purely by public transport and walking. Many working class people in Indian cities walk and cycle, we should make our streets safe and comfortable for them.

Disadvantages of this extreme overpopulation: 1. Toxic and hypercompetitive education system that only focuses on marks. 2. Overcrowded classrooms, roads, hospitals, parks, public places, tourist places, etc. 3. Road accidents and road rages. 4. Unavailability of bus and train tickets, even during urgency. 5. No footpaths on most roads, severely restricting walking space. 6. No parking space due to which half of the road space is occupied by parked vehicles. 7. Rise of obesity in young Indians due to the unavailability or overcrowding of parks, open spaces or recreational centres. 8. Young Indians preferring to stay indoors because of the depressing crowd outdoors. 9. Auditorium-sized classrooms with 250-300 students preparing for competitive exams which have less that 0.5% selection rate. 10. Severe unemployment causing huge stress to students and young adults during their prime years and prompting them to take extreme steps. 11. Low, meagre salaries even when you are overworked because you are easily replaceable. 12. Rising obesity, diabetes and heart diseases because people only think about their careers. It's madness all around.

I recently visited my hometown Sahranpur, UP and I saw drastic change in the quality of roads the cleanliness and the cable management. I couldn't believe it was my hometown as in the past everything was so dirty and the roads were built on potholes. I live in a small village in Gujarat. It is cleanest place I have ever been. I have lived in mumbai and pune due to work but their pollution is unlivable. I can't even imagine life in Delhi. Most of villages are pretty clean. I think major factor is in villages we have small population.

So well put together! Safai dekh kar log aur safai rakhte hai. It plays on others psyche. Even in the case of delhi metro, initially it used to get vandalised and would get pretty dirty with trash, but with constant cleaning, slowly people started being more careful of where they were throwing the trash, and 99% of it went to the actual trash bins. Things do change, when you see others around you respecting the space they have.

The problem that since Mumbai along with Shreesthaan (Thane, a part of the larger Thane district) forms an island (Shatshasti Island), it cannot grow horizontally is not a problem at all. It is a fabricated excuse by the politicians, authority and builder nexus to build skyscrapers, high-rise buildings and coastal roads on expensive Mumbai land and even worse bridges and roads and spiralling interchanges in the ocean(e.g. Bandra-Worli sea link plus coastal road) and on the riverbeds along the rivers+nalas (for e.g. Navi Mumbai coastal road) to make quick and huge money at the expense of destroying nature (and its beauty), of sane living in and of sane development of Mumbai..
Stop building bridges in the ocean (from Bandra to Versova). Stop the desecration of Juhu Seaface with immediate effect. Save the Juhu Seaface, a 7 km long seaface, which is the most visited beach in Sindhusthaan, with immediate effect.
The FSI must be fixed at 1 or less and the height of buildings must be fixed at 98 feet or less both depending on the natural underground water-table level (this will control the population explosion and keep population at the right level/sq km.
Also this will prevent an already worldwide hazardous phenomenon called 'the sick building effect' which is because of zero sunlight penetration on the ground, which leads to death due to cancer, kidney failure, TB, chronic respiratory disorders amongst others.
Also this will prevent an already worldwide catastrophe i.e. flooding that happens because higher FSI and taller buildings lead to larger underground foundations of those buildings which leads to less space for water both in the rocky aquifers and the soil which leads to a catastrophic rise in the water-table which leads to flooding.
Also this will prevent tripling or quadrupling of electricity bills which happens because tall buildings lead to almost no daylight penetration on the ground or inside the houses or offices which leads to usage of electricity throughout the day for light and air-conditioning which leads to multiple times higher bills. ) .
The island (seperated by the Ulhas river) must be connected to its surrounding cities that are Navi Mumbai, Shreesthaan (Thane), Vasai-Virar by bridges across the river ( bridges already existing and also Trans Harbour Link across Ulhas river's brack waters near Panvel creek) and further by roads (roads already existing) and metros including 'water metros' (not existing) for e.g. as in Surat and Kerala and 'bus metros' (not existing) and 'train metros' (not existing) and 'a/c compartment in local train' (not existing. No need to have an entire a/c local as many commuters can't afford it. For those who can, an a/c compartment or two is sufficient. An entire a/c local runs empty most of the time and hence can't afford to give the frequency of 1 train/3 minutes) within Mumbai and to Shreesthaan (Thane), Kalyan-Dombivli, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Badlapur, Ambernath, Vasai-Virar.
Not by making insane coastal roads (including bridges) in the ocean and on the beaches destroying all the open spaces (beaches) and beautiful (happiness-giving) views (the sea, the horizon, the sky, the sunset) and the underwater flora and fauna (including planktons that light up the sea at night) forming the entire seaface. For e.g. as at the Sabarmati River Front and the Ghats of Ganga and Sharayu river.
The Worli Seaface is gone. Completely desecrated.
There must not be any bridge in the ocean (from Bandra to Versova: Stop the desecration of Juhu Seaface with immediate effect. tributaries+
rivulets (nalas) all over the city, 19 beaches, 104 sq km National park (the only one inside a city in the whole world. Plus a sibling 'The Tungareshwar National Wildlife Sanctuary' right across the Ulhas river in the Shreesthaan (Thane) district. The bungalows built at Yeoor Hills, the Tikkuji Ni Wadi, the roads across the forests to go from one side to the other must be taken out with immediate effect.
Only the access roads for the adivasis i.e. the original forest dwellers to their padas i.e. small villages must be allowed strictly.), Shreesthaan (Thane) creek National wildlife sanctuary, Aarey i.e. a part of the National Park (including forests which the Modi/Fadnavis gov converted into a development zone from a no-development zone to build the metro 3 car shed by passing a legislation i.e. law after the courts and the National Green Tribunal stopped their work, Chhota Kashmir garden+lake, film city's lake. But all business and infrastructural activities like Film City, Aarey Milk Colony, Metro car shed+depot, 5 star hotel Renaissance or Westin, Royal Palms must be taken out with immediate effect), mangrove forests (saplings planted, that too in some other place, cannot compensate for uprooted trees grown up over 15 to 50 years or more and for destroying the natural biodiversity and it's habitat at the present location), wetlands (including 'khaadis' and mangroves along the nalas), natural and heritage man-made saltpans, more than 88 lakes, 150 ancient caves, more than 950 gardens and parks of Mumbai, playgrounds (maidans), sports complexes, swimming pools, recreation clubs, stadiums, beaches of Vasai-Virar, Palghar and Raigad amongst other tourist attractions.
The value of Mumbai's natural resources of aesthetic concern and/or man-made tourist attractions must be conserved by not making man-made structures (including skyscrapers, high-rise buildings, transportation infrastructure ) near it or visible from its location.
People of Maharashtra must go to court and also do an andolan against the gov (Modi gov, Gadkari gov, Fadnavis gov, Shinde gov or Thackeray gov or Gandhi gov or Pawar gov or Kejriwal gov or Akhilesh gov or Mamata gov or any gov) and/or any authority (Ashwini Bhide authority whose husband left his job of an IAS officer and became a first generation prolific entrepreneur) or any builder (Ambani or Adani or Hiranandani or Birla or Tata or L&T or anyone) that plans and permits such purposeful desecration of natural beauty and, with immediate effect, get a permanent ban on desecration of and a permanent law for protection of natural resources of aesthetic concern i.e. natural beauty of our heritage state Maharashtra.

I work for a Korean company from India. Once I had the opportunity to attend an Technology show event in Seoul. There was a booth from this company as well. While setting up the booth by all the participating companies, there was little trash like paper cuttings, packaging materials, tapes, small pieces of wires etc. After the booth setup was done, I saw the company CEO picking trash along with other employees. I was really surprised. That incident changed my whole perspective of keeping cleanliness around us. Now I run a company and do not hesitate to clean the office every now and then.
It’s a hard pill to swallow but we Indians have a long way to go when it comes to cleanliness.
Why should I do it mentality is very much prevalant, be it lower class or upper class. We just won’t do our part.

Last year i was in Delhi preparing for UPSC. There was a park in front of my library, all the students so called 'UPSC aspirants' used to litter while there were 2 bins in the park. They can write an eight page essay on importance of clean environment but won't do their part. So it's not just the Government, we the citizens are also responsible.
When we see people throwing waste like this. We should call them out publicly then and there. But we don't want to make a scene there and tangle in unnecessary banter, so we sigh and ignore.

I used to live in a very affluent south delhi neighbourhood. I started cleaning the area around my house regularly, seeing this, the people around me started throwing trash there expecting me to clean up after them. They were unreasonable to speak to. They even used public parks to dry clothes and threatened violence when confronted.
I think India should have a law about having to clean their neighborhood or specific areas in their city for small offences like in other countries, I have grown up watching popular media where the characters would hate the day they had this duty but did it anyway.

It's been over 2 years since I moved to Canada.
I visited India 2 months ago and I found very difficult to find a hygiene (usable) public washroom in Gujarat which is claimed to be developed.
Sad reality not many Indian citizens care about!
Canada is way more clean than india. I too am thinking to move there due to our garbage government and useless infrastructure. Reservation, And Many other factors. They don't care for our Citizens. All the parties are taking us for granted

Once I thought about how Singapore became such successful country and wondered why India which has similar problems can't solve them, then i realised that it was easier for Singaporean people to accept each other's nationalities and thrive together, but here in India we can't even accept the people of different caste/religion/ background whatever. It all starts with us citizens of this country, untill we become broad minded, our politicians will live on to loot us. The worse thing is that in our country people don't realise that those loans taken up by politicians that didn't make any progress but some how the funds landed in their pockets, ya all that lost funds , we have to pay them not those politicians.

I hear your frustration. 40 years ago when I first went to China, I observed nearly insurmountable challenges including lack of housing, cleanliness and outdated and decrepit infrasctructure. Not to mention corruption which has plagued the culture for thousands of years. I won't go into details, but today the situation is a different world; quite the opposite and improving with each day. It was not easy. I too have visited Delhi and Mumbai several times and you are correct on all accounts. The Chinese are no more intelligent or capable as Indians. The big difference IMHO is China's leadership and strong policies which have not always been acceptable with that of the West, but nonetheless have propelled 700,000,000 out of poverty, plain and simple It would be in India's interests to put down whatever differences they may have with the Chinese and/or Chinese gov't and learn from them. Together India and China could accomplish so much more and really create an Asian Century.
@jamesho8820 You are correct. China of today is incredible in regard to economy, infrastructure, cleanliness, tech, education, civic pride and duty and it is government led. HOWEVER it is the citizens who must put policy into practice otherwise it won't work. There is a street in Ranchi where thousands of students of age 8-18 pass by and there is no sidewalk for them, the roads are filled with trash and no one does anything

We as a country never understood the importance of well planned cities. Every developed country is highly urbanised because cities are lungs of an economy. The faltu rural romanticism like the "go back to villages" Of Gandhiji perfectly describes this problem. So after independence, except for few examples like chandigarh, gandhinagar, naya raypur etc we never built any planned cities.
So when our economy grew rapidly everyone went to the same 4-5 metro cities. Those were never designed to house such a large population and as a result we see what a mess those have become. And even out of 4-5 metros Mumbai, chennai, new delhi, kolkata were all built by the British.
Even today more than 55% of people live in rural areas so they are a big vote bank so politicians don't give a fuck about urban issues.
We don't even have a proper civic sense of how to live in cities that's why we see so much stray animals wandering, trash, indiscipline etc.

The difference I noticed between the before and after pictures of Indore was the added greenery and reduced road space. That's such a well thought out move. Most of India appears to be trying to ape the Americans and building a car centric society. Something that the Americans themselves are now trying to change, building more protected bicycle routes and reducing access to motor vehicles to the heart of the city.

As a person living in Bengaluru, as soon as you complain about any problem first thing localite say is "If you dont like it, go back to your home town". By saying that they are suppressing your voice and indirectly encouraging the people who contributing in ruining the city.

Neither the locals nor the outsiders care much for the city or their civic duties. Most people I met lack critical thinking and deductive reasoning. They lack any awareness about how their local municipal council works. Infact, most migrants strictly stick to the rules in the fear of being outcast and bullied. This whole rhetoric that it’s the migrants that disobey and cause problems is a myth.

For a country of 1.4 billion people, there is literally 0 cities in India which I could say would even compare with a tier 3 city in the west. Thats the sad reality. Bad infrastructure, bad traffic conditions, no walkable and cyclable cities, thrash everywhere you go, worst air quality, and the highest weather temperatures in all of the world. There are literally no redeemable qualities in any of the Indian cities

Another major reason our cities are unlivable is car-centric infrastructure planning - we focus on roads and flyovers rather than clean, efficient public transport, and walkable and cycle-able neighbourhoods with tree cover. Most of the great cities of the world (European cities especially) are not covered by flyovers, are an absolute joy to walk around, and make it easy to go anywhere purely by public transport and walking. Many working class people in Indian cities walk and cycle, we should make our streets safe and comfortable for them.

@@rajibdutta6650 Size is not necessarily an argument - Tokyo is the most populous city in the world, and also amongst the cleanest cities with incredible public transport. Even if we accept size as an argument, then why are our Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities (which have comparable population to European cities) also in pathetic condition? Our cities are fixable, but if we try to find justifications to remain as we are, the battle is lost.

Cities like Indore, Surat, Vishakhapatnam pride themselves on their cleanliness; we need to cultivate such an attitude in more Tier 2 and 3 cities.

Disadvantages of this extreme overpopulation:
1. Toxic and hypercompetitive education system that only focuses on marks.
2. Overcrowded classrooms, roads, hospitals, parks, public places, tourist places, etc.
3. Road accidents and road rages.
4. Unavailability of bus and train tickets, even during urgency.
5. No footpaths on most roads, severely restricting walking space.
6. No parking space due to which half of the road space is occupied by parked vehicles.
7. Rise of obesity in young Indians due to the unavailability or overcrowding of parks, open spaces or recreational centres.
8. Young Indians preferring to stay indoors because of the depressing crowd outdoors.
9. Auditorium-sized classrooms with 250-300 students preparing for competitive exams which have less that 0.5% selection rate.
10. Severe unemployment causing huge stress to students and young adults during their prime years and prompting them to take extreme steps.
11. Low, meagre salaries even when you are overworked because you are easily replaceable.
12. Rising obesity, diabetes and heart diseases because people only think about their careers.
It's madness all around.
Not related to this video, but when someone tries to implement a healthy (or at least, healthier) lifestyle, the same Aunties and Unkils (they may even be just 15 years old) have the audacity to comment on all this as 'Dramma'. I recently visited my hometown Sahranpur, UP and I saw drastic change in the quality of roads the cleanliness and the cable management. I couldn't believe it was my hometown as in the past everything was so dirty and the roads were built on potholes. So it seems the government CAN do change through strict supervision and would like all of you to make your government do it's best to improve the situation

2. Cleanliness and Public Infrastructure should be in top 3 priorities of a common Indian Voter.
3. Cleanliness should be taught to kids from their early ages in Schools.

I live in a small village in Gujarat. It is cleanest place I have ever been. I have lived in mumbai and pune due to work but their pollution is unlivable. I can't even imagine life in Delhi. Most of villages are pretty clean.

So well put together! Safai dekh kar log aur safai rakhte hai. It plays on others psyche. Even in the case of delhi metro, initially it used to get vandalised and would get pretty dirty with trash, but with constant cleaning, slowly people started being more careful of where they were throwing the trash, and 99% of it went to the actual trash bins. Things do change, when you see others around you respecting the space they have.
