    good job sticking it out and making it there in almost 1 piece haha!
    i have a little bit of advice about your uploads.
    youtube seems to reward people that upload on a regular schedule.
    so although i am suuuuper happy to see part 2 just 2 days after part 1, youtube probably isn't. best bet would be to set 1 or 2 days a week to post your videos, and at the same time on those days. so for example Fridays at 7pm, or Sundays at 2pm.
    there'a a way to upload on one day and set a different day and time to have your videos released, that way when you are out at sea, or on an island with little to no internet connection, you can still upload at your regular time.
    just trying to help cuz i love your videos, so i would love to see them get the attention they deserve, and you get the followers you deserve.
    i mean with your ingenuity and resourcefulness, i can just imagine the things you could do with a bit of extra cash coming in from UA-cam

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  4 місяці тому +2

      Thanks, so i hear. Unfortunately im a bit too busy to edit videos on a regular basis like that. Like this summer i barely uploaded anything because i wopls be busy until dark and then too tired to edit. In the winter it gets dark early so more time for editing! My account is monetized but currently i make about 30 bucks a month! Well below minimum wage for just the time editing. Anyway! So what makes it worth while making videos is more making friends with the commenters! This is more of a social network for me. So videos will come when i have the time, the algorithm be dammed

    • @PKAdventures
      @PKAdventures 4 місяці тому

      @@dominictarrsailing that makes complete sense. I do hope you end up gaining more followers and earning more from youtube soon, because I know how much goes into making videos like this. Part 1 is a great video and part 2 is even better. I'm keen to know how you heave-to. I found on my Pahi 42 that with a triple reefed main and a backed staysail I had too much yaw, about 40° so that with each yaw cycle we were beam on to the wind and waves which was qite disconcerting.

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  4 місяці тому

      I have used just the reefed stay sail, and the tiller tied to lee, in up to 35 knots. In this video: ua-cam.com/video/DVCACnrmFVw/v-deo.html
      It could point higher though, and sometimes you get hit by the crumbling waves, which is a jolt.
      I think I'd use the sea anchor if it got more than that. This was the first time using it and it went well. Though, it does pull you up through the waves with a bit of acceleration and waves still hit the front of the cabins. I've heard that a jordan series drogue isn't as bouncy like that.
      now that I think of it, maybe setting a small sail on the back stay would work better? on my raven 26 it hove to best with just the triple reefed main and tiller to lee.

    To call, or not to call... that's the moment, right there; it isn't fun trying to decide where the line between prudent and regretful decision-making actually lies, but you kept your head so that's a solid win. I'm also glad to see you're being skeptical of the GRIBS data - forecasts have gotten me into some dubious situations.
    Thanks for the storytelling, Dominic! Now that you've crossed the IDL you've earned the right to a golden dragon tattoo!

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  4 місяці тому

      well, this time I was too far out to make radio contact at the time so I had to sail closer anyway, but by that time I felt I had the boat under control, so I just sailed.
      Hmm, I did cross 180 degrees, Chatham island is on the west hemisphere, but it's the same date as NZ, in the east hemisphere, but has it's own timezone 45 minutes ahead... so no you don't get the same date again. Does that still count? feels like cheating

    • @Forrest-Jackson
      @Forrest-Jackson 4 місяці тому

      @@dominictarrsailing hmmmmmmm. I crossed the IDL at the equator (180 at 0) but the IDL crosses the equator at 3 locations! and down where you are it gives y'all a wide berth... So by a technicality probably not... But going from 179 east to 179 west is in the spirit of the thing and Neptune Rex is all about the spirit of the thing... so I think you have the argumentative latitude to identify the nature of your longitude.
      IMHO

      @@dominictarrsailingThat first bird mean the most! My very first ship went from NYC to Singapore by way of the Med/Red Sea/Indian Ocean and for 217 days I did that run and it was flat out epic. Once that way of life becomes routine, though, it gets decanted down to nothing but union infighting, shipboard politics, poor coping mechanisms, and a bit of a split personality... well... I think you're doing it the right way, man. The magic and terror and boredom and frustration and exhaustion and everything that voyaging entails feels much more visceral and personal when there's only yourself to congratulate (or blame).
      Having a ringside seat while someone else does it and shares their experience is pretty damn cool, too.

  • @markthomasson5077

    Sea anchor. The issue with laying off the bow is that a big wave will still push you back, therefore potentially damaging the rudders. With yours, they should be able to be lifted in this situation, with perhaps a bit of modification. Make the lower pintill with a very long pin, coming just above the bottom of the hull, so you can lift / replace the blade easily.
    Jordan drogues seem to be the best option for most. But in your case the sea anchor is just as good or better. Your hulls are double ended, so happy either way, and very low windage. And obviously better to have your hatch facing away from the wind.

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  4 місяці тому

      hmm, yes. yes if you could get the rudder on the pintle before the water was pushing on it, that would be much easier. Extending the pintle up is an interesting suggestion. I was gonna add guides that it slid against further up, inside the well. You can certainly lift them up while at sea, although it's a somewhat awkward manoeuvrer.

    • @markthomasson5077
      @markthomasson5077 4 місяці тому

      @@dominictarrsailing lifting easy…put them back is your issue.
      My cat has very sensible stern hung rudders with vertical sliding boards. So they get removed when not sailing. ….but removing them in a rising Gale would not be any fun…and very wet.

    What an awesome passage. Now I'm going to have to binge watch the entire series. Do you have a berth in both hulls so you can rest in whichever one is leeward? Great job putting the video together.

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  2 місяці тому +1

      There is a berth in each hull but I just stay in the port side (the galley). There isn't really a big comfort difference in the tacks. Except that on the lee side the boom is inconveniently right over the hatch. But the real reason for not switching sides is that I'd be constantly misplacing small stuff, thinking I left it on the other side etc. Starboard side is the guest house!
