One Last Trip In Cleo (Raven 26)
I have my cat hauled out in Whangarei, ready to renovate the interior... but I can't really renovate the interior while living in it so I'm gonna sail my other boat up to be my house. My sister also joins me for part of the trip!
This trip takes place in early August, still winter in New Zealand, as you can see there was actually pretty good weather! you can go cruising any time of the year in the Hauraki Gulf, in fact going cruising in August is a favorite time for me because the worst of the winter has past and it's still several months until the crowds turn up.
If you are interested in the boat (Currently in Whangarei) please email me: dominictarrsailing@gmail.com

    Nice video. I owned Cleo mid to late 90's and had many a good trip on her. Pleased to see the platform I made stood the test of time. She had a new yanmar in her back then and did motor quite well. Good luck with the sale. Hope someone will bring it back to its former state.

      Thanks for the comment! I have many questions! Was the deck painted white when you owned her? (The gelcoat is tan underneath that) Were the sails new? Did she have wind speed meter then? Grey carpet on the ceiling? I sailed her around the north island solo in 2020! Engineless, through a gale off waiarapa coast and another one in cook strait! That was coming down the east coast. Had a better run on the way back, did the west coast all on one tack!

      @@dominictarrsailing The decks were mainly white with cream coloured on the anti slip areas. She did not have wind gear back then. The grey carpet on the ceiling is front runner which she had from new, stops the condensation etc. I put new sails on her late 90's. I also installed a capstan which you didnt appear to have anymore. The interior timberwork is walnut hence the dark colour.

    One of the best videos on UA-cam for the subject matter, big fan of your work and approach. I built a rowing tender that becomes essentially a “lighter” for carrying large items to an anchored boat. Meadowlark dinghy playlist on my channel. (It’s not built for speed) I’m wondering about dinghy docks in your cruising ground, space at a public dinghy dock can become an issue, if you are just paddling back and forth in a harbor, can you quickly pull the vaka and ama together so you get a narrow boat, connecting arms going vertical for a cramped space tie-up, or do you just use the plastic kayak in places like cramped anchorages with restricted tie-up area?

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing 3 дні тому

      @@wailinburnin space to tie up is nor normally a problem in nz, not the was i sail at least. If unless i need to carry crew or gear i generally take the kayak, and lift it out and chain to something on land. Sometimes with the proa I anchor it near shore, with a double ended warp, though a block at the end of the chain, so i can stand on shore and pull the proa back out to deep water, and then later, over to the shore. It is a bit of hassel though, not as had work has hauling it up the beach but more fluffing around

      @ thanks, I pleasure to get your reply. Fair Winds, dude!

  • @macrumpton
    @macrumpton 3 дні тому

    In watching this again it looks like when you are heeling a bit the angle of the daggerboard starts to add a lifting force which as you get going faster lifts the board out of the water, which changes your center of lateral resistance rearwards which makes you bear off. Does that make sense? If you haven't seen them already here are some videos of a model proa that uses a hinged curved foil to automatically limit the amount of heeling: www.youtube.com/@vectorfoilproa

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing 3 дні тому

      @@macrumpton yes the hydrodynamic forces definitely change, for example once the ama is flying there is now no hull drag from the ama. Which would be force causing the boat to turn up, which has gone... the ama drag is pretty small though. Also, its quite easy to fly the ama, and the sudden bearing off problem is definitely when i hit a particular speed, and while sailing on a reach. On the outward leg i am doing a close reach and although i het 10 knots several times it doesnt happen, it only happens on the way back when im on a more broard reach. Hmm i am doubtful about a significant lifting force from the board, the reason being that the angle isnt very high, the upward vector in a angle less than 15 degrees is tiny. More than that and the board is out of the water I remember that down foil ama proa from the old proa_file mailing list days! Some good bursts of speed in those models!

      @@dominictarrsailing Abel Tasman is lovely, but quite a small area overall. Ideal for trailer boats or multis that are happy drying out. For the South Island (or beyond) I'll vote for Stewart Island as favourite cruising ground. It's simply stunning, better for sailing, nice clear water, wildlife, and not too many boats. Just temperatures can be pretty cool and if the weather systems are in full flow, it can be the wind factory. Lots of good anchorages to hole up in though. Moturekareka was once owned by a family friend and I used to sail out there in my old Zeddie and camp there. The island was once owned by Mr. Hansen, he purchased the Rewa and had her sunk as a breakwater, in front of a small dwelling, shared with his wife. which was removed by DOC a few years ago. A second hermit arrived at the island after Hansen. He was called Snow and I think he was the only survivor of a yacht grounding near East Cape. He was there in the early 70's when I used to visit.He had a hut in the flat area within the mined part of the island and another one built of tar paper close to the two drives behind the trees by the wharf. That worked but the problem is it limited range mast could be moved to windward (for balancing downwind). If you don't have something to take up the slack the mast will have too much freedom and can fall if caught aback. On the new proa I have a similar but improved system, but with the slides at the bottom. The stays are a loop that goes from the masthead, down to an eye at each end and then is connected along the deck. Then two short lines are tied to this can can be cleated, so I can adjust the total movement. Also, when the mast moves over in the shunt, the back stay becomes tight, and it takes some slack out of the forestay. In the Gary Dierking book he has bungees, that pull the mast into the center, but he also has a strut which stops the mast falling over. His rig is different proportions too, the mast is shorter and the tack slides along the lee side of the hull in a shunt. I have a longer mast and the tack lifts over the deck in a shunt, and it also enables me to get the yard close to vertical for sailing downwind. GD mentions this approach in the book but chooses the other one. They are both traditional designs (except for using a shunt line) but from different islands. My rig is closer to that used on Marshals or Kiribati, and the low tack is used on Fiji.

    I have now watched all your proa videos, love them! I have watched this one three times. Winter in NE USA makes for intense sailing daydreams- thank you for letting my mind wander! One question: is the waka symmetrical or is one side shorter? If so, by how much and how did you determine? Thanks again for all the great content. I’m really enjoying binging your adventures from the past several years. Happy new year 2025!

      @@Moleasses102 the hulls are both symmetrical. I wanted it to be fairly okay to paddle, since this is a general work horse for cruising, and well as something fun to sail. I mainly tried to ensure that there was enough volume that id beable to take 3 people in paddling mode. But also to build it from 3 sheets of ply and have an ama big enough to support my weight. Ive sailed with two people but it would just be a bit crowded with three. There is a link to the plans i drew with all measurements in the description.

      @ Thank you, and yes, I saw the plans last week and was playing with them on a cereal box this morning. I also found @svoiysh recently and saw the pros they built using your plans. My nearest sailing is the Delaware River in USA, tidal near me and less than a mile wide, so near constant course changes, so not sure a proa would be the right boat, but it looks so fun! I might have to build it one day and take to my childhood waters in Massachusetts where there’s a lot more room for long reaches and camping. Inspiring, thanks again.

    Hi Dom Hope you are having a great Christmas and New Year. I farted around making a wind vane a few years ago. Got half way though and then distracted. After seeing your unit I have decided to give it another go. Do you have any drawings or photos of how the oar rope transitions from the vertical to the horizontal on your unit? Any close ups or drawings would help. I think I will end up with a hybrid but am collecting ideas. gary in Japan

    Loving these videos Dominic, speed is always wet. Is the Proa pointing well? Your Shunts are quick but what angles can you get up wind?

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing 18 днів тому

      @@recidivist11 i havnt measured it accurately but i would say it shunts though 120 degrees. You can point higher than that, but it goes a much better speed off the wind a little, also getting back winded it best avoided on a proa. Although, on my setup the rig wont fall, so i can just gybe around to the same tack again (see the first sailing video for a demo)
