    Loving the adventure Dominic but please get yourself one of those dead rabbit things for your microphone! The wind noise is excruciating to listen to!

    Loved the MartyT reference, good old Kiwi ingenuity. He actually needs help building a raft for his little tractor. Might be time for a colab hahaha.
    Wind noise is something I’ve come to appreciate with your videos Dominic.
    I think his budget priorities are to have the boat functioning first.
    Maybe we could have a gofundme for a new camera and microphone.

    Great video Dominic, apart from the wind noise, you need to catch a rabbit by the tail and make one of those furry things for the mic.
    Ocean sailing without leaving the country, nice one,
    Cheers from MS Matakana

    Really enjoying your journey and your "keep it simple" attitude. Plus I learned a cool way to tie a soft shackle.

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  4 місяці тому +1

      Thank you! Youll certainly find a lot of soft shackles on my boat! There is the fancy way with spliced dyneema with a diamond knot but i dont have any trouble with my simpler faster way coming undone, and you can make it with ordinary braid

    Good to see you're safe and have a better rudder now.
    Great tips on sailing to the Chattams. You're going to need to start a book soon to rival Annie Hill's book (which is very hard to find!).

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  4 місяці тому +1

      Heh hmm that book is a classic, still a lot of good advice in it. But in some ways dated. Such as now solar is really cheap and led lights dont use much power and everything has a gps in it already. And that old production boats are now insanely cheap... not really ideally designed for low income voyaging... but they where still pretty new when she was writing

    You can get something called liquid electrical tape, great for sealing joints in cables etc.
    If that’s a reasonably permanent joint, I would solder together. Wrap cables, then wrap in solder wire, heat with cigarette lighter. Slide down shrink fit cover…if you remembered to put it on first

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  4 місяці тому +1

      I actually just found and brought some liquid electrical tape yesterday! I've had pretty good results with the petroleum jelly so far also

    That desolation is hard to convey on video. I bet it was much more empty-feeling in person. It's not as easy to find solitude nowadays, but obviously there is plenty out there.

  • @sailingmare6563
    @sailingmare6563 2 місяці тому

    What a cool island. If I ever sail to NZ I'll definitely stop by. The proa must be pretty stable to be towed in the open ocean. I wonder if they make a folding model that I could put on my foredeck?

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  2 місяці тому +1

      oh no, I don't tow it. I only tow it short distances between anchorages. when going a long way it's on deck, behind the cabin, under the tillers, the outrigger parts packed inside. "they" = me! I designed and built the proa to fit on this catamaran! (there are several videos on the proa also)

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  2 місяці тому +1

      I actually know someone that used a small proa as their tender on a monohull, they kept it assembled, ready to go, over the cabin. They had a junk rig so very little need to go forward, i think.

      Yes you were right. I should have redone it. But by the time the video was up i had already sailed away using the bad welds!

  • @grantmcraven

    Thanks for putting in the effort of sailing over and making a vid, but there are many periods when it's impossible to determine what you're saying with the wind noise so strong. Perhaps re-edit and overdub when you can.
    The requirement to have cleaned boat bottom within previous six months is a requirement when entering all NZ ports. DOC and the harbour authorities are trying to prevent the transfer of marine pests. And it's easy for you and free of cost if you choose, given you can beach your boat. Photos would suffice for proof with most Harbour Masters.

      hmm, I have been unable to find any specific information on that, except for arriving international vessels. and some places like fiordland.

    Even wear a mask with small mic inside would help kill thy wind nose. Whole video is wrecked by wind nose, sorry.

    BTW I like the sound quality on your videos, feels like you are there! I live on a small island and wind is part of my life, filtering out the sound would detract, i think, just checked the area of Chatham island and Pitt island constitute most of the total area of 793.87 km2 - the Island I live on Faial 173.06 km2 (66.82 sq mi, we do have more people though😂
