  • Wave pools are one of the most exciting progressions in the surfing space since the modern day shortboard.
    Conceptually, wave pools have been spoken about for years however only in the last decade have they become a commercial reality. Beginner surfers to intermediate surfers and advanced surfers can all benefit greatly from their use - but what will the future look like when it comes to wave pools?

    Wavepools are incredible for technical airs, mini toobs, and turns.
    But learning how to read the ocean, different swell directions / timing, and different types of bottom breaks (reef, sand, etc) will be hard to fully replicate outside of the ocean.

    For me personally the best thing about surfing is to travel, find new spots, master the spot, master the lineup. So every Session ist exciting and different because you never know what will happen, even if you have surfed the Spot 1million times. Sure a Session in a pool must be so much fun and you can practice your riding. But as an average Surfer I don't really care so much about that, I just want to have fun and that fun for me is the whole experience. So I see a Wavepool for professional Training or in Germany for example where people can't surf normally. But then the 2 weeks Holiday in Indo or whatever will still be the highlight and I bet I can score more perfect waves there then in a 70$ Session in a pool. But its defenetly awesome to have the option to go to a pool

      Exactly, mate. The pools aren't meant to replace the ocean, just like a skate park doesn't replace scouting out and bombing tasty rails and stairs. Both places provide a consistent training ground to practice and perfect specific skills and build endurance so that they can be applied to sessions in the wild.

I read this pool is the equivalent of 16 Olympic pools, which is 40,000,000 liters of chlorinated water. What about land artificialization and energy consumption ? It might go a bit like rock climbing centers. You'll get some people who just go to the wave pool and enjoy that, maybe just surfing in the ocean on vacation. Others will use it to hone skills. I mean look at the people who just boulder indoors and never go climb outside. And just like climbing you still need to put in the hours outside in real conditions to be able to cope with less than perfect waves, weather, reading the waves, timing, and just paddle strength I'd have thought. As someone fairly new to surfing my biggest struggle has just been building paddle endurance and learning where to position myself in often choppy and messy conditions.

      KOOK doesn’t just mean beginner or low skill surfer. It means a surfer with bad surf etiquette. A wave pool has a defined channel to paddle out. A wave pool has one take off spot and a true lineup. A pool has rules that are enforced or you get to leave. The real ocean is unpredictable. Most spots don’t have an exact spot to take off. It moves around depending on the wave direction, size, and tide. There are days with 3 different swells in the water. Combine this with people paddling out where surfers are riding the wave, it’s NOT THE SAME at all. Example of no surf etiquette: I was paddling for a wave and about to pop up when a teenage girl paddled right up the face of the wave into me. I had to push my board to the side and bail. After I came up, I said “WTF are you doing?”. She then told me that I hit her board. I told her she needs to stay out of the way when someone is paddling for a wave. She said “that’s not how it works”. I told her STAY OUT of the WAY. This was in front of a surf spot that has lots of campers from everywhere. This girl obviously learned how to surf in a wave pool. She doesn’t know how to stay out of the way and blames her stupidity on the surfer that has the “right of way”. OCEAN SURF ETIQUETTE: If a wave is breaking and you can’t make it over without getting in the way of the surfer on the wave (or paddling for it) you need to go into the whitewash and TAKE IT ON THE HEAD! Otherwise, you’re a KOOK!!!

    • @dannynysus
      @dannynysus 3 роки тому +10

      @@ErikaLaGrande Sure, mate. You're talking about a cultural problem though. I've encountered plenty of experienced surfers who have blocked, snaked, or dropped in on me because they don't think I deserve waves they think belong to them. I can take a longer lunch and get my 12 waves and go back to work. I go surfing in the ocean on weekends too so it doesn't replace the ocean but it's more like a gym for surfing. I totally understand using wave pools to progress your surfing and to access the water when you may not otherwise be able to. Interested to see how wave pool dominant surfers are able to translate their skills to the ocean. Maybe getting into the ocean isn't even the end goal at that point?
    I started surfing later than most so I may have an unadulterated perspective that comes with being on old kook, but the reason I surf is to get out into the ocean. The benefits for me mentally are first and foremost. I definitely get pissed when I totally bomb a session and get pounded. That said, I usually leave just happy I got out there. If the whole point for me was to become a great surfer then I probably would've given up at this point. So much of the battle for me is the paddle....

    If I had a proper wave pool near me, not Disney World’s Typhoon Lagoon.
    During flat spells, which happen a lot, here on the East Coast Cocoa Beach/ Satellite Beach area. If I was jonesing, I’d hit up a wave pool, with some friend’s, just for my sanity when it’s flat for too long. The Golf Range for surfing quote, sounds pretty accurate.
    One of my favorite things about ocean surfing, is the ability of having to adapt constantly & within split seconds to the changing conditions. That’s the rush, that’s the high for me. Paddling into a wave, that imperfectly perfect & using one’s ability & agility/skill level/knowledge/reflexes/etc. to adapt & conquer whatever Mother Nature throws at you & make it look like, Tom Curren, Kelly Slater, Dane Reynolds or Rob Machado, Mike February, etc.
    (Like a bar fight by candlelight)
    Regardless of what the wave height is or how perfect or horrible the wave conditions might be, from hour to hour. Like you said, there might be a “real life” Rick Cane story come true, from the availability of a wave pool to inspire someone to learn to surf, that otherwise… Would not have an opportunity to do so, where they live.

    My issue with wave pools isn't the "kookiness" or "overpriced" aspect. Original surf culture was about connecting with the ocean, and this was central to Oceania culture for millennia. Not only do wave pools require a massive amount of power consumption, but it takes away the connection with the ocean. Sure, they're totally epic, and a good training tool, but I would be bummed to see wave pools replace natural surfing no matter how well they can "replicate" a real coastal environment.

      Give me a break. This is just nonsense. Surfing is still a fairly wealthy sport done by mostly white people in mostly the same areas. And when it comes to the professional ranks it's almost exclusively the realm of "rich" white kids. Yeah yeah...I know...this is where you throw out the success of the Brazilians. They are the exception, not the rule. I guarantee you there are just as many, if not more really good young Indonesian surfers than Brazilians and they are not represented at all at the highest level. The reason the Brazilians are dominating now is a combination of good grassroots organizing by surf groups in their country which then, in turn, led to huge sponsorship dollars coming in. Again....it's money that's made them successful. The surfers themselves may have come from poor places but the institution of surfing in Brazil is not poor at all. If surfing were "equal" then the Indonesians would be mainstays on the leader boards.
      And Kelly's pool can be booked by anyone if you've got the money. So what? What's wrong with that? It probably costs a lot of money to run that place. Why shouldn't they charge a lot to use it?

I'm not one to complain about new people taking up the sport, I think it's great, but there was always a massive barrier to entry with surfing since it took so much time at the beach to develop even the most basic skills. You've got to keep your eye on the forcast, take any opportunity you can get - it's hard, time consuming, and takes real dedication to progress. Now anyone with enough money can rock up to a wave pool and score perfect little waves without knowing anything about the ocean. I'm really torn because I've had some great fun at a wavepool and will definitely go again at some point, but I am worried about the increasingly commercial direction surfing has been taking over the last several decades, which wave pools are now part of.

    Don’t put novice surfers in the pool with expert type wave sessions. You’ll get more customers

    How much on average is a session over there? Here in Brazil the wavepools being built, including the wavegarden one you show in the video, are inside private condos alongside golf courses. Agree this could be a revolution, specially in places with a lot of surfers and no ocean, such as São Paulo.

      The more are built, the cheaper they will get. In the end, they will just be weird waterparks, most wont last for long due to maintenance costs. You can pay to play in an olympic size perfect grass soccer field, but in the end, no one cares. They’ve tried indoor ski and snowboard courses, never worked. Surfparks are just temporary. In 10 years you will only see children playing on it. Unless theres really strong marketing over the course of the next years, surfing will stay restricted to surf spots. Surfparks will be too crowded, to expensive to maintain, uncool and unpractical. But maybe im wrong,

    Wave pools certainly will help with progression of surfers, with beginners all the way to advanced surfers benefiting from the occasional session at the pool. However, on the whole they will be limited to the wealthy, and the pros for use on a regular basis. The vast majority people don't have $80-140 to spend multiple times a week to go surf. If you wanted to get 10k hrs at pool that'd cost at a minimum a cool $800k. Not gonna happen. Pools are businesses first and foremost not training facilities for anyone.
    I don't think they're the future of surfing, but more places people will go for one off sessions to learn, and practice a new skill or technique.

      More pools and the price comes down

    • @DanVal4
      @DanVal4 3 роки тому +2

      @@KalesBroccoli You think so? I don't, they have high operating costs and profit margins to attain. They only way prices will come down is when there is enough competition that the number of pools/waves out strips the demand for them and that ain't happening anytime soon.
      I'd love to pay $20-30 for an hour intermediate/expert session at urbnsurf, but that's never gonna happen. That wouldn't cover the operating costs even with 15 people in the water.

    • @dannynysus

      “We have 8 breaks, so when we run 6 waves per set, this gives 48 rides per set, so running 50 sets per hour gives 2400 rides, plus learner breaks and shore breaks,” said Founder Aaron Trevis.
      If the wavepools have the capacity of Surf Lakes and surfers pay $30/hr then on a 10-hour day, at full capacity (240 surfers), that's $72,000/day for an average of 10 waves per hour (when was the last time you got 10 good waves in an hour, mate?). The estimated construction cost is $20 million which would take 277 days at $72,000/day to recover. This calculation, of course, excludes operational costs but I'm sure there will be other revenue opportunities to offer to those not in the water. It certainly seems possible to drive costs down to a reasonable level when wavepool technology is fully debugged and streamlined and supply is high.

    • @DanVal4
      @DanVal4 3 роки тому

      last time? On Sunday. Helps that it was 3ft offshore, with only me and another bloke out. Secondly, wave pools don't have the capacity of Surf Lakes. They are much smaller scale. I actually think Surf Lakes is a fantastic idea (and wave pools in general). Big fan, however I gotta disagree with the idea that prices will drop dramatically, even with the advent of more pools. You said yourself that you're completely ignoring operating costs in your calculation. But these are what helps drive the price high. Maintenance, staff, electricity, pool cleaning, water, equipment etc. Then you add a conservative profit margin on top of this and suddenly you can see why the cost per session is high. And that's ignoring the initial construction cost.
      Waves pools will become a great tool for learning, improving and practicing, and I am all for them. But I don't think it's reasonable to expect the everyday population to be able to afford to go surfing at wave pool multiple times a week.

    Human's are a "path of least resistance" creature. If wave pools get cheaper and a better variety of waves, many people will likely opt out of regular inconsistent surf spots except for vacations to classic global spots. I never got good at surfing in the Malibu, Topanga, Zuma areas because 90% of the time there were no decent waves. So you just sat in the water like a chode...lol Pretty...but after the 50th time...I quit...:D
