I was a sceptic of wave pools, surfed the Melbourne pool and had a blast, look forward to surfing here at home in Sydney. Good review kale as always....
Used to live 30 min from Tulla and was a foundation member. Surfed it close to 100 times. Yeah they are smallish waves but definitely lifted my surfing cause it’s hard to surf it good. Have to be on your game with the lack of ocean power. One awesome thing about the pools is being able to surf after dark on a weekday. It’s surfing but not as you know it. On a glassy sunset evening it’s pretty amazing when those waves start pumping out. Live by the ocean now and only been back once in 18 months.
Thanks Josh. I’ve been keen to get over there from WA and watched heaps on it but you really nailed a review that gives me the feel for it in all respects.Cheers
One day the waves were weak like this and I decided to just chill and ride straight but let my board follow the flow of the wave - let it be carried up the wave (without turning), and let the lip throw it out and down again, so that - if you were to look at it from the direct front - the board would be doing a full rotation round a clock-face but facing nose-on to your eye the whole time. There was something so charming about riding like this - letting the wave lift you and throw you, rather than powering all over it - that the memory never left me. I think if you vary your style from time to time from slashing turns to a gentle flowing with the wave, it will benefit you with a quiet joy. It returns you to the initial fun you first had. It's not all about how well you can surf. Before this, it's about the wave carrying you. I hope whoever reads this tries it out - you won't regret it.
Exactly what I was thinking. I'm 60 and have surfed for 45 years and still on 30-35 litre short boards. I think a lot of surfers get carried away with trying to pull off a powerful progressive turn with every chance they get but at the expense of feeling the wave. Probably due to the professional surfing scene over the last few decades. Yeah I'm getting old but I find hacking the shit out of a wave gets a bit tiring to watch after a while.
@@wavester46 Exactly! And there is also something charming about watching a surfer who flows with the wave. Even if he pulls manoevres it's more like he's dancing with the wave than overriding it - choosing what he does to complement the wave. At the risk of being called a simp - but I have to call it like I see it - Kale is such a surfer. It's a joy to me watching him surf because of this quality, whatever it is.
Great review Kale mate, joined you in the Feb Melb sessions and looking forward to working on the advice in my newly available local wave pool here in Syd. It was actually quite inspiring to see how much everyone was getting from your coaching-keep it up man, you are working in the positive
Look forward to getting out there. Getting older been a while and it is intimidating out in a crowded break. Look forward to getting out with some mates not fighting for waves.
Thanks great review! I’ve surfed Melbs a few times and I’m pleased to have a local version (no need to hire a board like I do in Melbs). Good summary of all the modes. 1st session is booked!
Currently working on a video to explain how wavepools work technically. It's interesting to note that the waves at Sydney are different to Melbourne given the same technology by Wavegarden. The two causes i could think of: 1. Different concrete levels and surfacing under the water level which would impact how water is being displaced 2. Completely different coding structure in the computers that generate the wave sequence. Super keen to get down there in afew weeks! 🏄🏽♂️
@KalesBroccoli Yeah that's the most likely scenario for different waves. Something I think you're spot on with is that this may be intentional by Sydney to create East Coast type waves, as they could easily just tweak the speed and frequency of the generating modules to create a similar wave to Melbourne.
I had a cruiser session at Melbourne about a year ago. As a longboarder I rode their 9ft softdeck. I struggled with that choice. I look forward to using Sydney's pool as I'm from Newy, my question is will I be allowed to use my own board, it's a lightweight 10ft McCoy. Cheers.
Hey dude do you think a 7’6 Epoxy would be suitable for the advanced waves, intermediate surfer or go a small fibreglass 6’7 or 6ft ?? Thanks legend 🤙🏾
Great review and I might have to check it out. Had to chuckle when you said it was an hour from the Northern Beaches. Probably not UrbnSurf's biggest target market. 🤣
Hey Kale! I was a member at the tulla pool. They had new settings that we got to test on a members night that were more cupping probably very similar to the settings you tested at Sydney 🤙
If you want a steep drop into barrel take off wide. I was taking off really wide on beast mode in Melbourne backhand finding it easier to ride the barrel.
It seems deliberate that they created a "geospecific" wave in each location. East coast waves for Sydney and South coast waves for Melbourne. Credit where it's due, me thinks.
Discussions underway for a second surf pool in Melbournes south east (that will apparently be the biggest in the southern hemisphere…we’ll see) Hopefully it goes ahead as for me Tulla is still further than Phillip Island!
@@KalesBroccoli possibly, but I think Melbourne can sustain two. There is a large population in the east and south east who don’t/wont make the trek to Tulla, not regularly anyway. But the new park sounds like a water theme park with a surf pool rather than a dedicated surfing facility which might turn punters off.
Advanced turns was my favourite at Tulla. Barrels are fun for a bit but I found I wanted more turns when it flipped over to barrels in advanced setting. Like shit I was just getting into that.
I like that it's not a straight copy from Melbs. Why would surfers up north want to come to sunny, cold, hot, freezing temperamental Melbourne, when they could just go to Sydney. Having the waves different (Although not overly different) attracts surfers to what they would prefer at the time. Well done URBNSURF, wish I could surf there more often.
It definitely looks smaller and weaker than the Melbourne surf pool. Will be interested to check it out. Good advice about board choice, that can be make or break for a good session. Definitely looks like you need a board that can generate speed but also rip in the pockets
It's not just the wedge that's economically unviable. Their whole price point is a rip off. Yeh I'd pay their hourly rate as a day pass, that's more value $150 for an all day pass sounds better then one hour
Take a 5"11 Js tractor with you everywhere. I bought my first one at a skate shop in Athens in 2009. Ironic cause I grew up surfing Mali and little Mali and dropping in at the graveyard and surfing crazy shit at froggys when only esky lids were brave
Totally shit soft small boring unless it's the advance, but still small not even head high WTF. AND PULLING THE BS we can't use the air section ! 😢 Suck. Saying this we still all want to try it. We are so fed here in Oz because the crazy gd power ramps n turn sections in the new brazzo pool are taking it to the nex level! So much more grunt even tho it's still smallish. Go Kelly! Epic pool
I did it in Melbourne best money ever spent on surf related anything, improved in 1 hour and its relentless for 1 hour straight, you are done after the session. Absolute bang for your buck. Couldn't recommend enough. Magical experience. Suggest intermediate to start. Advanced too much for first time and cruiser too weak
