Love the slowmo version. Nice explanation of how to for beginners, I can relate to my surf coach and understand by what he meant now. I will definately need to get in lake water and practice since our oceans are closed
Kale using your videos over the past 5-6 months I finally ripped some west coast surf without spending hours trying to stand. Just went out there and bombed It helps I have BSR near me in Dallas Texas!
"There is no way that that there is going to result in an informed decision." A nice way of saying "what the heck are you going." Apt analysis, apt analysis. Great channel. Cheers.
Yew! Great tips as always Kale. Had one of my best surfs a few days ago! Felt great to get in the water and lucky to get a couple of sick waves. I'm always telling people to check out your channel since it's helped me so much over the years! Surf well and keep on creating my man!
Awesome Vid, for a while I was having trouble getting into the wave when my friend took some photos and showed me how I was looking down this made a big difference. Good Work
Thank you Kale. I am 55, female, petite and have never had upper body strength. I keep looking for tricks to paddle stronger and......well, there are none. I live in the Big Island of Hawaii, where swells can come for a week but also leave for 2 weeks. It's very discouraging to think I might never get really surfing because I cannot paddle strong enough. I have considered powered motors on the board, but these are heavy and then you lose the ability all together? Hoping I will be able to do this, the water here is crystal clear and I love being out there no matter how silly I am. Something about just catching ANY wave keep me going. The whole family watches your videos. We turn on the TV and stream some Kales Broccoli, and we try to pop up while watching. I certainly entertain the family with my failed attempts!
"...there no way that that there is going to result in an informed decision..." is perhaps the best kindest critique I have ever heard a person give another, LOL. Essentially that is me there ( I flounder and learn slow), and that is why I am trying to relearn again as an old man long boarding after being young years ago on short boards. Thank you so much for the video.
Good points Kale thanks. Especially for the older surfers who do not get enough time in the water and who's energy levels and flexibility are down. I'll need to check out the yoga and do more paddling practice.
Great info as I also suffer from most of these issues regularly. I am older and stiffer and started yoga stretches which is helping, but years of bad form to fix. But when I get it right it feels great. Thanks.
Paddle like your life depends on it and don't hesitate. Just watch Mason Ho paddling into freakish beach break into rocks. Paddle like that. Love the videos!
thanks for the tips. coming back from some hip issues and my timing was definitely not where it used to be. couple extra paddles will hopefully do the trick.
Taking up surfing again at 60 your pop-ups are so smooth and easy to main thing I learned from watching you is you keep your hands down on the board for a long period Of time until those feet come up to replace them.smooth
You have Highlighted what i already knew i was doing wrong but you have Confirmed it if that makes sense. Don"t Look down at the Board for Answers but Down the Wave, Angle the Board Slightly and the Pause, don"t forget that there Pause, without the Pause it becomes a Rushed Affair. This all used to be a Natural Event for me but after a Back Injury and out of the Water for a While i'm now Starting from Scratch. I'll get there, i got there before so i will get there again. Once i'm on the Wave i Rip like the Good O'l Days.
Video gold once again! Watching your vids has improved my surfing immeasurably, going to try these micro turns next surf! Keep them coming, it's the subtle nuances that are so important for improvement. :)
More great tips mate. I’ve recently purchased a Swiss ball on your advice, and with some of your surf exercise videos I’ve been watching , i am now starting to get into the classic banana shape much more easily. I’ve lost 7kg as well and found that has by far made the biggest difference to my surfing hey. I’m 6”3 and was 98kg so it’s always more difficult being taller and heavier I think but making progress🤙. So keep the vids coming mate. They are making my surfing life way better. Also, how beautiful was that water when you caught that little tube on the twinny.😱
Thanks for this vid, i live in the netherlands and i got the problem that if there is a big wave it always ends up with me going for a really steep drop-in. But now i know tbat i must paddle better
Good stuff your technical tips. Watching the older dude your advice to lose a few pounds and practice some yoga was fair. For me at 60 yrs, surfing since a little kid. I have degenerative joint disease with nerve damage to left arm. I am flexible and fit but my pop looks like his. Once up I can go ok but I will ask the other surfers to cut me some slack, just because I may look like a kook
Interesting watching the slo mo of your bottom turn. It's almost as if there are two turns there. The second boost turn gets into the power pocket. In real time it just looks like one bottom turn though. Will definitely be more aware of this potential action particularly on my backhand where I don't seem to have as much power on tap as my forehand. Thanks.
your videos are some of the best tutorials out there - much appreciated! would love it if you (or someone) could post some longboarding tips (cross stepping; nose riding etc!)
Great tips with position and paddling power . I would like to see what he will be like in 8-12 months with more yoga and weight loss to catch waves and powder harder . Look forward to seeing your client progress more
Nice video man, those little details which makes the difference ! Even thou I surf quite a lot in the last 4 years, I often time end up with the white wash breaking in front of me. Important to mention that on small wave beach break it is so important to stay high up in the wave after take off, especially where we surf in the Northern beaches, the surfers who get the best wave can angle really well their take off to make the first section and build speed. Something I can manage fronthand but damn my backhand sucks, somehow I start to paddlee in an angle and when the wave carries me somehow my board goes back toward the beach and i automatically have the bad habit to look at my board when going backhand on take off. Hard to undo bad habits....
One thing I've learned is that 2 strokes at the right time and position on the wave can easily get you in and going, when 6-8 strokes at the wrong time and position still won't.
Paddling fitness is very important. I drove to the coast last week to ride a hurricane swell. The paddle out smoked my arms and lats and I could hardly catch a wave after that. On a normal day I can walk out to the lineup. Gonna start using weights to get stronger, cuz that sucked!
Any suggestions on beaches with easy waves to learn in Gold Coast or surrounds? Always seems to be 500 people out and lucky to catch 2 waves in a hour. The waves always look perfect to learn on in your videos :)
Take off at 2:37 is so nice. Seems to begin with a slight sweep of both knees, then back leg stops and front leg continues under the chest, am I right ?
Good stuff...that pump and compression is exactly what i've been working on. I've been really trying to get a big pump to get to the top 1/3 of the wave and like the mini pump setup, little hidden things making the difference. Thanks for the excellent explanation!
@2:40, when popping up on the foamie, for half a second your front knee is outside of your arm/elbow pushing up. I noticed on pictures of myself from last year I tend to do that (om small, hard to catch waves, at least) - and I thought I really need to do something about it... Do I? (I feel, maybe there is a risk of the front foot having to be readjusted after first ending up a bit of centre.) And if so, what?
Hey Jens, so to help you with that you may need to twist your hips a little when popping up. this should help your knee slide through your arms nicely. To help with this, try and focus on catching a few waves on your front side and make sure your are looking down the line (with your head turned, your body will automatically try and twist as well) this is a little harder on your backhand so good to start with the forehand. hope this helps
biggest takeaway for me is looking at the extra little micro turn in the bottom turn. in my most recent surf I decided to focus on two basic things -> 1) legs closer together (front foot slightly turned out) 2) surfing rail to rail the first I have an issue with since I learned to surf with the bad habit of getting a really wide stance. Bringing my legs closer together seriously helped me get more power out of every movement. I could compress more in turns and stand taller on takeoff and through pumps. secondly, I started singing the rail to rail song while waiting in the backline - this helped me engrain those actions into my subconscious, before takeoff - funnily, one of the waves turned into an opportunity for a barrel, but I pumped straight through it with speed and power since that was my focus - barrel missed, but basic practice gained. Totally worth it. Thanks for the vids.
good stuff! thanks! I have always wonder when you are padling your position to the way should be perpendicular. However, once you pop up you should be already facing into the direction you want to go or first you stand and then turn? Thanks!!
Awesome informative video. It helped me a lot. I’m on a 7”3 board and I’m trying to do more turns however I’m finding it hard to shift the whole weight of the board. Any tips?
1. your client has his legs open when paddling which effects weight distribution when paddling into the wave, thats why he is struggling to get onto the wave. this also creates drag when paddling thus slowing him down. To be clear, it doesn't seem to be a positioning issue 2. your client has his chest way too low to the board, this doesn't allow for him to use his upper back muscles when trying to paddle as well as makes it harder to reach forward for each paddle stroke, this will also be one of the main causes why his pop up is struggling. 3. When your client is paddling for a wave, the main focus should be down the line, or at least looking up. For those of you who are still learning, where ever you look is where your gong to go. If you are looking down at your board chances are you are going to fall. 4. Because your clients awareness is down at the board, they are not lining themselves up with the wave, learning to catch waves is like learning to drive a car, when you learn to drive a car your awareness is left, right and behind you not down at the foot peddles. 5. When popping up, your client has his hands holding onto the rail of the board, this will automatically cause uneven weight distribution and is another reason why his board is going the wrong direction. 6. His hands are also a little far forward, which will make it hard to slide forward when popping up and cause his front foot to land way to far to the back of the board. He needs to shift his hands further back underneath his chest 7. because your client is looking down and his back isn't arched and his hands are to far forward on the board he doesn't create enough space between his hands and chest to bring his knee under his chest. Looking up helps arch his back, hands further back, under his chest makes sure he has straight arms and not at an angle which helps create enough space for the knee to come through. 8.Because he doesn't have enough space to bring his front knee forward, its causing his hips to raise really high in the air, this will then cause his feet to be close together, this results in bad weight distribution on the board when standing. This will also cause him to stand way to tall and keep him off balance when riding the wave
Is there a specific way your hands should go in the water when paddling so you can get more speed like should they be long powerful strokes or short quick strong ones because I am a swimmer and play water polo so I was wondering if there was a difference???
It would be cool to see a video where we get to watch your students progress through their mistakes and what you told them to fix! a little like the man in this video but more in-depth and perhaps a little more intermediate level.
this was really really good, thank you
I don't have any surfer friends, I just go out there with my youtube knowledge and my limited experience : )
Good on you!
Just don't drown out there all alone!
Same and these videos are only thing to help give me tips
bro just hit a straneg up to surf
One small request. Could you show the person's wave in real time first and then do a slow mo breakdown. Thanks!
Maybe! Depends on length/ structure etc
You can Play it faster or slower, it’s clutch when watching pros pop up
I love the break down, repeat, slow downs of this video.
Love the slowmo version. Nice explanation of how to for beginners, I can relate to my surf coach and understand by what he meant now. I will definately need to get in lake water and practice since our oceans are closed
Hope they open up soon!
Kale using your videos over the past 5-6 months I finally ripped some west coast surf without spending hours trying to stand. Just went out there and bombed
It helps I have BSR near me in Dallas Texas!
Thanks Kale. Excellent breakdown. The tip about the little pump/turn part of the 'bottom turn' and watching it in slow-mo - Gold!
Thanks Roger!!!
Kales Broccoli you mentioned a “Swiss board for paddle training “ towards the end of not mistaken...what is that ??
"There is no way that that there is going to result in an informed decision." A nice way of saying "what the heck are you going." Apt analysis, apt analysis. Great channel. Cheers.
You guys are so lucky to be still aloud to be surfing during quarantine
Super lucky!
And surf has been pumping on the east coast all week🤙
im amazed you think thats how you spell allowed
are you not?
Could you guys surf quietly maybe? Instead of aloud
Thanks for this, Kale! Helpful to hear the feedback your students receive.
Awesome!

Bonjourno! Graci
I couldn't agree with you more. Not being in good paddling shape puts you in Soo many problem situations. As always great advice 🤙
the way that you explain is very clear and easy to understand.. thanks a lot mate.. 🙏
thanks....informative for intermediates looking to improve. Slow-mo with the analysis was spot on

Top vid Kale.
Really helpful. Thanks a lot. Love your stuff!
Very positive vibes. The instruction is very helpful. Top marks. 😎👍👍🎉🍻🌅

100%
True....watch a good surfer. Nearly always in a good position and not paddling like a lunatic !
Perfect explanation you have done. I will practice your teaching ( when I found a wave...ahahahh).
Poor guy 😂. Anonymously put on blast. Love your vids Kale.
Paddling fitness is very important. I drove to the coast last week to ride a hurricane swell. The paddle out smoked my arms and lats and I could hardly catch a wave after that. On a normal day I can walk out to the lineup. Gonna start using weights to get stronger, cuz that sucked!
Precious precious advice!! Thanks mate! :)
Good, informative video. Thanks for the help. I subscribed.
Great video. Thx mate
Thanks 🙏 again 🤙🏽
Thanks for posting this. You’re a good coach. If I ever get to Australia, I’ll ask you to coach me.
Hey Kale do you have any videos on strengthening or increasing flexibilty?
Great videos Kale, really enjoy and appreciate them. Just wondering if I can get private coaching aswell?
great details
Thank you!
Thanks for the lesson,
Thanks for watching Daniel!
As always - great tutorial !!
can you refer to "when to start paddling when a wave approaches" in one of your next videos ?
Check out my positioning video over here on this channel - it'll help!
Any suggestions on beaches with easy waves to learn in Gold Coast or surrounds? Always seems to be 500 people out and lucky to catch 2 waves in a hour. The waves always look perfect to learn on in your videos :)
Always something to learn. Another great video - Banana activated! 🤘
Awesome!! Activate those bananas!
great breakdown!
Can u do a video on out of shape people and what to work on? Full beginner style?
Thanks a lot , very interesting
Very cool. Learned more in 13 min that hours on the water.
Kale, how are you able to turn your board like you did on 2:03? Do you just apply pressure with the right hand to turn your board to the right? Thanks
by putting more weight into the hips you can steer the board like a rudder.
Hey dude we watched all your videos there awesome! We wish you could coach us were in Brasil
Travel will e allowed again soon! :)
Thanks! ✌️ rip the waves
Hope we can meet or txt somehow
This is wonderful
really good thank you -
6:37, it happens to my a lot that that a swing my arms across my chest when popping up backsides. I wonder if that makes me loose balance.
Take off at 2:37 is so nice. Seems to begin with a slight sweep of both knees, then back leg stops and front leg continues under the chest, am I right ?
Can u talk about back side stand up and back side speed generation
Can you do some POV GoPro videos of you surfing. I’ve watched some before and it really helps when I go out
very nice video, thank you very much!
Good stuff...that pump and compression is exactly what i've been working on. I've been really trying to get a big pump to get to the top 1/3 of the wave and like the mini pump setup, little hidden things making the difference. Thanks for the excellent explanation!

Hey Jens, so to help you with that you may need to twist your hips a little when popping up. this should help your knee slide through your arms nicely. To help with this, try and focus on catching a few waves on your front side and make sure your are looking down the line (with your head turned, your body will automatically try and twist as well) this is a little harder on your backhand so good to start with the forehand.
hope this helps
thanks bro! stay healthy
You too!
Great vid👍
biggest takeaway for me is looking at the extra little micro turn in the bottom turn.
in my most recent surf I decided to focus on two basic things ->
1) legs closer together (front foot slightly turned out)
2) surfing rail to rail
the first I have an issue with since I learned to surf with the bad habit of getting a really wide stance.
That's awesome!!
hey Kale's as always great vid which is the one for paddle power with the Swiss ball. cheers
Click here on my channel and check out the paddling video - not too far down :)
sooooo helpful
Thanks !
good stuff! thanks! I have always wonder when you are padling your position to the way should be perpendicular. However, once you pop up you should be already facing into the direction you want to go or first you stand and then turn? Thanks!!
Thanks! : )
Awesome informative video. It helped me a lot. I’m on a 7”3 board and I’m trying to do more turns however I’m finding it hard to shift the whole weight of the board. Any tips?
get stronger. Or get a shorter board
Ok thanks
Hey can you do a video on how to do the oomph
Guys u are the best!! Been learning and improving so much since watching your channel. Really appreciate🤙🤙
Would love to know where that video was taken with the cliff and clear water, looks like a great place to visit (eventually!!)
1. your client has his legs open when paddling which effects weight distribution when paddling into the wave, thats why he is struggling to get onto the wave. this also creates drag when paddling thus slowing him down. To be clear, it doesn't seem to be a positioning issue
2. your client has his chest way too low to the board, this doesn't allow for him to use his upper back muscles when trying to paddle as well as makes it harder to reach forward for each paddle stroke, this will also be one of the main causes why his pop up is struggling.
He needs to shift his hands further back underneath his chest
7. because your client is looking down and his back isn't arched and his hands are to far forward on the board he doesn't create enough space between his hands and chest to bring his knee under his chest.
Thanks
Thanks 👍 , more time in the water it is
Is there a specific way your hands should go in the water when paddling so you can get more speed like should they be long powerful strokes or short quick strong ones because I am a swimmer and play water polo so I was wondering if there was a difference???
love it !!!
It would be cool to see a video where we get to watch your students progress through their mistakes and what you told them to fix! a little like the man in this video but more in-depth and perhaps a little more intermediate level.
I think the important above all is the pop-up. if ur pop up is perfect you can ride it way through.
