Hi Jason, yeah apart from the old muscles needing some exercise, it was pretty much like riding a bike, bit of a few wobbles to start but quickly remembered... I practiced pop ups like mad beforehand too.. But yeah its literally like riding a bike or having a go on a skateboard after a few years
Some of your tips have taken my surfing to another level. Im no pro by ANY means but i can bottom turn, top turn, pump for speed, clear sections that i couldnt before. So thank you Kales.
Another tip. When paddling into a wave, along with looking down the line, make sure you are also looking behind you as to make sure you don't cut someone off.

LOVE this video! I've been trying to move from beginner to intermediate for years, and I feel that for the first time I understand what I need to focus on and how I can approach it. Thank you!
I have always rollerbladed and I think it helped me with surfing even more than skateboarding...the sharps turns, the fact that you will fall just standing there if you don't have good balance and the understanding of how different surfaces relates to different surfing conditions...it relates so much
Great advice, I especially liked you informing beginners that it’s actually easier to stand up on an unbroken wave, but a broken wave takes less skill. I’ve seen many beginners give up because they think that if they can’t stand up on a little white water wave, then how are they going to cope with a 3 footer 🌊. 👍
I am 57 and now wanting to learn how to surf for the first time ( mid-life crisis you could say😂). Watching your video gave me some sort confident and felt motivated. Fiji is the destination.
Love it! Your videos helped get me from Grom to intermediate to teaching other people over the last few years. Some times its amazing to sit on the beach after a session watching and be like 'I did it, I can hit all of this.' Thank you!

First of all: Your How To's on how to rip and on your channel are awesome. Keep the good work up! What I'd love to see is more content for landlocked surfers! There are so many of us and every one of us is trying hard to get prepared for the next surf trip. All with the goal to be able to enjoy our short time in the waves to the fullest. But there is not so much content on all those surf-channels that can help us... What are good exercises we can do with our surf skate? How can we exercise certain maneuvers on it? How can we simulate certain sections of a wave? What are good strength and flexibility exercises? Would be great to see some more of this stuff =)
Hey, fellow Midwesterner in the same boat, but at least have the fall waves of Lake Michigan. In my down time, push ups are key. I also "swim" with 10lb rubber exercise band 3x a week. With my hands in each handle and my foot on the middle part of the band, swim by bringing your hands arms up high over head like swimming. Immensely helpful in bringing power and endurance in the paddle!
I’m watching this 5 hours from the sea dreaming about getting back out there in 2021 at some point. Spent a week surfing when lockdown ended and was at the 85% catching waves phase.
Would love to see a series of someone you are teaching from beginner to intermediate and so on! I think it would help a lot of people to see someone in their situation! Love the vids they are great!!
Today I started to learn turns at my surfing lesson and I just came across this video, thank you so much it's really useful! I'm 16 and I can only surf for about a week every summer because I live far from the coast. In the future I want to live closer, I love the sea and my dream is to be able to surf at any time I want
Kale, your vids are epic!! Any more you can do for beginner-to-intermediate transition are super welcome!! How to not freak out on take off as the board tilts down/goes up the wave face from behind and improve pop-up from a 3 step (frog leg) to a slide or jump up are a few things I'd love to work on... Grateful for your tips and positive vibes!
Ive been surfing everyday for the last year and this information is still hugely useful. As SWS has returned to SoCal one thing I have struggled with was turning down the line but the "looking down the line" tip was great I can't wait to try it.
I’ve been surfing for about two decades and your videos are still super cool to me. Your camera angles and cinematography are pretty nice. I’m a lifetime intermediate surfer. Lol. But this kind info helps whenever my friends want to learn.
Hey Kale, Thanks for these well-edited step by step breakdown, they really help. The visual and your words come together really well, you're a great teacher.
Fantastic info. As a windsurfer i'm trying to get (better) into wave sailing. I believe your video will help me a lot as well! Especially the footwork, vision and low hips help me understand now why it is probably a lot better to keep my boom at a lower position in wave sailing unlike other conditions and why it is important that the footstraps are further apart as to bump and jump conditions and do my physical exercises. Thanks a lot for making this video. As a follow up i will need a video in combination with a sail ;)
Your example of the skateboard has given me so much confidence to progress my surfing as I know I can already do the skating part and just need to transfer the skill to the water. Thanks
Just discovered your channel as a new surfer at 40! Absolutely loving your content, so helpful and very detailed with great tips for anyone no matter their ability. Plus your content is super well done, great production. Always snowboarded since I was 10yrs and skateboarded since 8yrs. Now I live in Cornwall and only after 9hrs of surfing I'm totally hooked. Hopefully off to pick up a mini mal on the weekend. Can't get enough of it :) Will be checking out more of your content, keep it coming!
@Michael Barnett Bro. It's fucking hard! The second thing is actually getting good practice, due to needing to wait for good waves. Very hard sport, huge admiration for anyone who does it well.
@@Abcccdwe Stopped consistently going out tbh. Like I said above man, so hard to consistently get good waves to learn on. Even then you can't get on em because all the good riders jump infront.
This was great, thank you. I've just started surfer and as a beginner, I don't have much confidence. I find that's my biggest problem. I know everything I'm doing wrong.
Great video I really enjoy watching surfing but with my back and the fact that I just turned 68 owe and my swimming almost non existent I'll just live vicariously through guys like you
I haven't surfed since I was 13 and I'm trying to relearn. I don't know if you've ever used a Rip-Stick but I'm hoping that along with longboarding will help me pick it up faster
Amazing video man thank you. Not common to find this ancient knowledge without deep research or experience and you explained it to the T, brief, and exceptionally. Really exposed the art of the surfing
Such quality in the way you relay this information!! So practical, straightforward and easily applicable. I think that many beginners forget to use their intuition and senses, its such an intricate thing to surf, you must be in tune with yourself and the motion of the ocean!!
Really clear and nice touch of explaining how the waves are formed! So much thanks! Would you make videos talking more about how to read waves for new beginners?
I’m an intermediate surfer who’s been surfing for years. I’ve realized that you can get out behind any set of waves just by paddling at a consistent speed. If you paddle hard when catching the waves and then paddle medium to almost just slow getting back. You won’t tire as easily. That’s just what I’ve found. I surf in Florida where it’s really choppy for reference lol. One arm at a time and take your time, it’s really a question of how long it takes to get back behind the waves, not if you will. It’s almost like a marathon. But if you wanna get endurance I guess just paddle hard the whole time 😂
By far the best video I’ve seen to understand the principles of surfing. I’ve been looking for some videos to supplement my teaching to my son. Great Job Guys!
Great video and really helpful and clear guidance. I'd love to see more surfer's POV shots when explaining wave positioning. The problem with camera shots from the beach or go pro footage that's pointing at the surfer when he's on the wave is that it all looks so different and feels so alien when you're actually there yourself. Unless you've got someone filming you, it's harder to tell if you're in the right positions on the wave. Subscribed
There is no greater feeling!! Thank you so much for your videos. i've taken up surfing during the most difficult time in my personal life later in life...it's the only thing I've tried that makes me feel myself and happy again for the hours after. I was lucky to grow up swimming and body surfing in WA, so I had a lot of wave knowledge built in (which I didn't know)...where I currently live in NZ is learners paradise. using your videos and doing lots of surf skating and surfing I have gone from a learner in the white water to being out the back and doing my first cut backs on the face of a wave in 6 months.....Thanks heaps.
This guy don’t lie for real, I’m currently around same level as Kale (a bit less strong ngl) so there’s a story, a friend started surfing just after first lockdown before summer (may 2020) and I kinda initiated him into surfing. The Fist thing i told him was to go surfing every time he could. I gives to him few advice like for the stance ,trajectories etc. And more importantly, he never refuses a take off and always go surfing even if it was too big for him(always safe but for pushing him to his limit), rainy, cold... he was surfing 1m80 waves in august. Now (February 2021) he can do turns on a 2m wave. Never giving up is the key. And try to don’t be a kook and the water is also very important, don’t drop in, sneak, paddle outside when sbdy is on the wave. You gonna eat a lot of them but that’s the game !
Haven’t watched y’alls videos since last summer and they still kick a$$! Fixing to catch my first wave of 2020 over here in Galveston Texas and yalls videos always gets me prepared!! Thanks guys!!! Happy surfing!🤙🏻🍻
I taught myself how to snowboard last year, but now that the snow season is over I’m still itching to ride something. Planning on buying a Costco wavestorm later this week, and gonna snag a wetsuit, can’t wait till I hit the water!
Hi Kale. Thanks so much. Watched this excellent video last night and focussed on the sliding pop up today while looking along the wave. I can’t tell you how much better I surfed. I’m still buzzing, and proof that you can teach an old dog...
One of your best, if not THE best, vids Kale 🥬 👏🏼 A lot of crucial info packed in there, but at my stage as a ‘mature’ (old 😆) intermediate but with some fundamentals to fix, all your content was spot on. Beautifully shot and presented; great testimony to your film-making. The ‘guest’ speakers were an excellent addition! 🤙🏼
I Learned how to surf when i was in the marines...we stopped off in Hawaii on our way back from Iraq back in '03 for 5 days...spent those 5 days trying to catch waves and on the last day i caught my first one...I miss it so much! Definitely a workout though.
Aloha Kales!! Superb video from 1st frame to last, not just because of the excellent production, but because of the thought, kinesthetics & body intelligence discussed & displayed. Grateful for your tips and positive vibes!
Good on you for breaking the tradition of tribalism and egotism, and making a career out of helping people improve with enthusiasm.
Ive been surfing everyday for the last year and this information is still hugely useful. As SWS has returned to SoCal one thing I have struggled with was turning down the line but the "looking down the line" tip was great I can't wait to try it.
Update I tried it and it worked extremely well. Thanks kales broccoli
I’ve been surfing for about two decades and your videos are still super cool to me. Your camera angles and cinematography are pretty nice. I’m a lifetime intermediate surfer. Lol. But this kind info helps whenever my friends want to learn.
Awesome!
Hey Kale, Thanks for these well-edited step by step breakdown, they really help.
The visual and your words come together really well, you're a great teacher.
thanks Peppi!! 🙌🏽❤️
Does anyone else already know all this stuff but still watches
yeee boi
I come from a skateboarding background, but I’ve never been on a surfboard
Yepp
yup
No
By far the most beautiful surfing lesson video I've seen
You really hit many of the points, the MUST SEE VIDEO for anybody wanting to transition from beginner to intermediate.
Thanks!!! 🙌🏽🤙🏽🏄🏼♂️
Just bought my first board 🤙🏻 can’t wait to get out there
Fantastic info.
Thanks
Been surfing since 12 and im 18 now, you give a really good insight so cheers.
Loving your creativity coming through on your latest productions mate. You're killing it. Keep it up .
Thank you Steve!! 🙌🏽🏄🏼♂️
Amazing vid! As a beginner I find your videos 1000% more educational then the lessons I’ve taken
Thank you Kale. I've lived in Florida most of my life and never surfed. Now it's time mate. Cheers from the States...
Love that!! Hey I’m coming to the UK by the way! kalebrock.com.au/surf
That extend the back leg cue, game changer!
Thank you Kales! This video is amazing and so helpful!
No worries :)
Kale
Always pleased to see more content from you Kale, and this was knock-out! Thanks for the inspiration..
Thanks Joe!!! Love it cheers brother 🙌🏽🤙🏽
Got a surfboard today. Gunna try and practice as much as possible. Be back in 12 months with an update.
@Michael Barnett Bro. It's fucking hard! The second thing is actually getting good practice, due to needing to wait for good waves. Very hard sport, huge admiration for anyone who does it well.

Update?
@@Abcccdwe Stopped consistently going out tbh. Like I said above man, so hard to consistently get good waves to learn on. Even then you can't get on em because all the good riders jump infront.
@@jakeismyfirstname dam bro, maybe come to bali bro. Here in bali waves are great
This was great, thank you. I've just started surfer and as a beginner, I don't have much confidence. I find that's my biggest problem. I know everything I'm doing wrong.
omg thank you so much im 13 and have been surfing since i was 10. this was the most helpful video i have seen! im subscribing
Thanks grommet welcome !
Great video I really enjoy watching surfing but with my back and the fact that I just turned 68 owe and my swimming almost non existent I'll just live vicariously through guys like you
Cheers mate!!!! Tks for this awesome videos!!! I'm progressing a lot here in Brazil with your tutorials. Keep it up!
Thanks Cedrick! Frothing ! Keep shredding brother
I haven't surfed since I was 13 and I'm trying to relearn. I don't know if you've ever used a Rip-Stick but I'm hoping that along with longboarding will help me pick it up faster
Good guys, good teachers, thank you. I’m an intermediate surfer from way back, but never had lessons.
Back at this video again. Trip is booked for July 2021. Let’s goooo
Really clear and nice touch of explaining how the waves are formed! So much thanks!
Would you make videos talking more about how to read waves for new beginners?
Honestly, you make the most magical videos
very useful stretching exercises, they are good whatever level we are
What you do is amazing and it always makes me smile watching you surf!
🙏🏽🙏🏽
Amazing info! Thanks so much bro!
I agree. No better feeling!
Surfing, Hooraaay!!!
So thankful to have found your channel as I am just getting into the sport now
Great video and really helpful and clear guidance.

I’m working on some really unique POV angles - probably be releasing over the next couple months :)
@@KalesBroccoli What's POV means
Excellent video! Competed in my childhood and your details are still helpful!
The beginning was like a nature show. Very helpful video thank you so much !
Your videos are not only extremely helpful but also very fun to watch 🙏🏽🙏🏽 thank you
Wanna have a go on a surf skate, but worried I’ll look like a complete dork waving my arms around like a lunatic 🤣. Loving the vids. Keep them coming
lmao just got one and I feel you
This guy don’t lie for real, I’m currently around same level as Kale (a bit less strong ngl) so there’s a story, a friend started surfing just after first lockdown before summer (may 2020) and I kinda initiated him into surfing.
Epic dude!! You might need to head to the BSR wave pool haha! Cheers for tuning in brother 🤙🏽
Incredible video. This would have takes Yonks to film, and edit. Really worth it. THE best surf video. Where are you dude? Awesome beaches
I taught myself how to snowboard last year, but now that the snow season is over I’m still itching to ride something. Planning on buying a Costco wavestorm later this week, and gonna snag a wetsuit, can’t wait till I hit the water!
awesome content
Thanks brother

Great video, can't wait to implement some of this!
Thanks so much Mark! Hahah “mature ” is a great word!! Hopefully I can continue to deliver great content for you throughout this year!
I just started surfing yesterday on a pro board and actually caught a few waves and it wasn’t the white water it was the face of the wave!
No way you liked my comment
I Learned how to surf when i was in the marines...we stopped off in Hawaii on our way back from Iraq back in '03 for 5 days...spent those 5 days trying to catch waves and on the last day i caught my first one...I miss it so much! Definitely a workout though.
Such great advice man! Nicely presented too! I've found looking down the line is critical (as you've said) in order to get a longer ride happening :)
🙌🏽🤙🏽 thanks brother! Love it

Aloha Kales!! Superb video from 1st frame to last, not just because of the excellent production, but because of the thought, kinesthetics & body intelligence discussed & displayed. Best tutorial I've ever seen on surfing movement, body preparation & breaking the complex down into the simple. Very high level teaching with a VERY open heart & mind and ZERO arrogance. Your mate Nic Laidlaw is an excellent teacher as well for all of the same reasons. Forwarding the link to friends, see you in the briney when our lock down ends ; - )
Hey San Clemente!!! Saw t street and the lost surf shop! Sweet!
Excellent video and tutorial! You constantly raise the bar on your knowledge and insight on teaching!!!! Thank you always for sharing 🏄♀️🤙
