King Diamond is not everyone´s cup of tea, but has been mine since 1983. Yes, 40 years and counting, last time I saw him live 2016 with this line-up and set list, it was fantastic. The only King we have !
Too funny!! We're all in our 50's!! I saw him live somewhere around 90-91. It was at The Living Room in Providence RI. Little club but it was an amazing show.
@Jeff Maltby Doomsday for the Deceiver is one of the best metal albums!! That had to be an amazing show. I was lucky enough to see Metallica with Cliff Burton but I didn't get to see Flotsam with Jason Newsed. Saw him with Metallica though.
When looking beyond the makeup and imagery, king and the entire band is extremely talented. The structure and neoclassical elements of the playing is truly astounding
Honestly, listening to Abigail for the first time is a trip. The talent of the musicians, the creative song structures, and great use of dynamics are all simply incredible.
As a vocal teacher, I can say the part of 05:37 is a good example of his control over his voice and breathsupport. It's like driving on the highway and then make a free but still a perfectly controlled spin and drive further. King diamond is just one of the best. And next to Dio and R.Halford my greatest inspiration to be a singer/musician. And he is of course the greatest storyteller/writer of them all!
@@Gregbaltzer Andy explains the theory to King's feel, and between the two of them, you have the apex predator material of the genre. Nobody is better than King Diamond.
King Diamond was 59 during this recording. He’ll be 67 next month, and still kicks ass on stage!!! You should check out his live performances with Mercyful Fate from 2022. I’ve seen King Diamond perform live a total of 5 times and he just keeps getting better and better!!!
I saw him make a woman disappear in Atlanta in 2015. It was the most incredible thing that I have ever seen a band do - Alice Cooper, Kiss, Rammstein, it doesn't matter. Nobody is better than King Diamond.
You do more King Diamond - I will be here!! 'The Arrival' maybe, or 'The Invisible Guest' !? Or you take something from Mercyful Fate, his other, older, also fantastic band! You won't find anything bad ,so you can just pick one blindly by yourself!! HAIL TO THE KING! 🤘😈
I've listened to this song hundreds of times since it was released and something about the line near the delivery of the line near the end "And as the sun breaks up the daaaaaaark" still gives me goosebumps half the time. I would suggest anything from the Abigail album. Every song on it is amazing, but the Black Horsemen may be King's best song of any album.
Ken, such a cool departure for you, not a musical them in sight. I love it. And, don't put yourself down ... you can hit these notes, it's just training. With your voice, two months with a good Metal coach and you would be ready to front a kick a** metal band. I really like that you are putting yourself through this; amazing.
Keep in mind these albums were recorded over 30 years ago...you should listen to at least one studio recording of him during that era...he is amazing. (side note...If you we not aware his albums tell a story from start to finish)
The fact is not only that he's an amazing vocalist surronded by a great set of musicians. The stories he tell on his records are absolute world class. Sleepless night comes from the "Conspiracy" album. A follow up conecpt album to "Them". If you have the time for it listen to these two great albums and follow the lyrics. It's well worth the time!
The backing/harmony vocals are performed by Livia Zita, KD’s wife. (You can see her briefly a couple times in this video, next to one of the staircases on the stage.)
It's the first time i hear this band and i like them ! The singers voice is very high ! I love your reactions ! Greatings and love from germany ♥️♥️🥰♥️♥️🥰♥️♥️
I'm a metal fan through and through and King Diamond is one of the main reasons. I first heard King when Fatal Portrait was released and I thought that he and the band sounded fucking awesome and that nothing else could surpass what I heard. That was until I heard the high luster metal gem, Mercyful Fate.
I play as Andy in a King Diamond tribute here in Orlando. I've done Slayer, Iron Maiden, Ghost, Grateful Dead, No Doubt, and there isn't a more challenging band to match than King Diamond.
I have seen everybody - EVERYBODY. Nobody is better than King Diamond. ...and if you get a chance to meet him, he will chat with you about everything and nothing for as long as you'll listen. All hail the King.
Saw king diamond a few years ago, then saw Mercyful Fate last year... AMAZING!! his vocals are extremely unique, and like someone said 'not for everyone' but even if you're not crazy about the singing, the music is EXTREMELY good
Where to continue after this song? With the next song on the album of course :) I always go for the full albums when I listen to King. Listening to just one song is like just watching one scene from a movie.
Seems an eternity ago that I saw your first reaction to I believe Queensryche. And you were admittedly a bit reticent of the whole metal thing... but you acknowledged that some of the moments to appreciate it had passed you by it when you were younger and you were coming to it now with a much more educated mindset and I'm glad to see that your journey has been fruitful, and that you appreciate what these singers bring to the table. For years and years extreme vocals were basically ignored by the mainstream, but these days you actually hear Gruff vocals in TV ads. It is all about things finding their place overtime. There are so many resources for young vocalists to learn these things now as opposed to what these core Originators did through sheer force of will. King Diamond is a legend for a very good reason... He is amazing and continues to be a vocal force of nature in his 60s. Cheers man, you were doing great work work.
"A Mansion in Darkness," is probably his best all around performance...his voice runs a gamut of levels of paranoia...each of these boices having a very distinct personality and presence.
Loved KD since 1984. "Don't break the oath" was my intro. He's always impressed ever since. He HAS had a few crappy albums over the years, but overall an amazing singer. I go back to the early Fate records now and then.. Great music!
Being that this is only your 2nd experience with KD check out these five tracks: A Mansion in Darkness- Album, Abigail Black Horsemen- Album, Abigail The Invisible Guests- Album, Them Victimized- Album, Them Father Picard- Album, The Eye
True story. We trained a lot of KD and MF songs with my band somewhere around 16-19 and I managed a pretty decent head voice and could keep up with most parts but then one day I completely lost my voice for a week and just couldn't get up to that register again. Don't know what happened with my vocal cords but it just felt completely different when I tried reaching those high notes.
Saw this video sadly just today because I'm not so long a follower of you. But If you wanna see more King Diamond was last year with his first band Mercyful Fate at Wacken and he can sing this High notes actually also. It I think on youtube or Magenta 360 to watch. And this show is fucking awesome.
KIng Diamond does also dive into ppsychological, the shong "The Trial" is just him diving into how unpleasant people can be when they think they are just.
My pops is a huge King Diamond fan, and when I was younger, I hated it. I don’t any more haha, I’ll admit it’s a different sound but it’s great once you get an ear for it.
Listening to King Diamond makes me crave for "Tea"! It could be earl grey, hot like on star trek TNG, or... well... Sorry, "Mother's Getting Weaker"...
Hey Ken, nice react video!! Please, check out some Andre Matos (from Viper/Angra/Shaman), he's one of the greatests metal brazilian singers of all time, a great musician, composer and he was considered an authority of vocal high notes. I recommend songs like Carry On or Stand Away from his Angra era, and Fairy Tale or Time Will Come from Shaman. Cherrs from Brazil!!

Show me one other lyricist (not named Rob Halford) that can match Kings range. Ripper Owens gets credit deserved. But King is in a world all his own. #Institutecoming
I have been a rabid metal fan for almost 30 years. I have never been able to put my finger on exactly what bothers me about King's singing. I want to say his notes are slightly out of key or missing hitting notes. I was hoping to see some criticism that would articulate how I hear it.
He sounds like Elmo from Sesame Street. Yet the Bee Gees sound very similar and yet their vocal style works for me in their songs. In terms of higher range of voices, I love Rob halford's studio version of Painkillers among other great Judas priest & Halford songs. I would love to hear somebody do a cover of his stuff in that style. The closest we have is Ripper Owens singing Abigail.
And yet here you are. If you don't like him, don't watch reactions of him. I hate Justin Bieber, don't mean I'm gonna go into one of his videos and slag on him.
I’ve been a metal fan since the 80’s and still am . Call it curiosity to see how he has faired through out the years , I give him credit however , he hasn’t lost his voice ( how ridiculous it is ) sorry tough to take him seriously, my opinion. You like him , enjoy 👍

He surrounds himself with the most talented musicians.
It’s no coincidence my other favorite band is Death. A band where Andy La Rocque also played in for one album.
Andy is a phenomenal monster guitarist
In a way like Alice Cooper
The most talented guitarist in the band is King Diamond himself. He writes most of the music and shows Andy how to play it
