Vestas Wind Turbine Blade transportation

  • This is how you do a right-hand turn with a 57,5 metre-long wind turbine blade!
    The blade is one of 198 x V117 blades being transported from Ashaig Airfield to Stronelairg wind farm in Scotland.
    Extensive studies and tests had been performed before the first delivery by our transport supplier McFaydens Transport.
    The trailer suspension and hydraulic neck were heightened to negotiate the bridge parapet for the safe 90 degrees right turn. In this way, less road modification works were carried out, resulting in less cost and zero trees cut down.

      I'm not a lorry driver but used to work at a place that had a lot around and I believe it's simply that if they need to carry a lot of wieght they put them down, if they are carrying a lighter load they lift them so it's less road friction and less pointless wear and tear on tires and wheels etc that don't needed to be used. You see it on normal lorries when they are empty etc.

    Yes the driver is proactive because that trailer have moving tyres in different directions otherwise he cannot enter in that narrow intersection and transporting the blades are difficult and diameter most is huge like 130 inches and to be 4 pieces the column (Wind Turbine Tower).

      I was checking that out myself. Really neat.
      Came here to see how it's *supposed* to be done after seeing that video from Texas of a blade on a semi getting hit by a train.
      (If you've not seen it yet, the driver seemingly got stuck on the tracks while trying to make a tight turn and cross the tracks simultaneously. I'd wager that the spotter is now looking for a new employer...)

  • @Hero_of_Legend

    So how do they steer the rear wheels? Does the driver do that? Or is the guy behind it doing something?

    • @SouthTexasGhostRider
      @SouthTexasGhostRider 4 роки тому +5

      The guy behind (Steerman)does the steering on the trailer axles. I haul these in Texas for the same company but this is a short one. We are hauling 67 and 72 meter blades here.

    • @Dave-nm8uk
      @Dave-nm8uk 3 роки тому +3

      @@SouthTexasGhostRider I think in this particular case the driver does the steering, but he takes feedback from the man behind. Although the blades in Texas may be longer I suspect the roads are straighter. In order to get this project completed several km of road had to be constructed at a cost of over £3 million. The trailers are adjustable length, and in this case if you watch the clearance over the bridge railings also had to be taken into account, so I think the support for the blade was raised. The police had to be notified in advance, and roads might also have been closed.

    • @SouthTexasGhostRider
      @SouthTexasGhostRider 3 роки тому +1
