@thephoenix4093 there's a difference between being being poor and just choosing to live without money. Joker very much could rob banks or whatever to amass wealth, but he doesn't. Not because he can't, but because he simply doesn't want to.
Also I think it'd be a funny idea to have a comic issue dedicated to the recruitment process of different villains.
Joker makes you kill your friends and family, maybe Black Mask actually pays you, and possibly the Penguin has fights to see who can join the crew.
Could be a neat idea that they may have already done.

    “Batman should kill people.”
Batman doesn’t kill people for many reasons but one of them is that he also wants to be a symbol of hope for Gotham as well. If he started killing people, Gotham civilians would start fearing him and would be seen as another freak villain. Police would start going after him. You wouldn’t have any orphans looking up to him, is what I’m saying. If Batman started killing he would quickly become a pseudo-dictator. Anyone remember ‘Justice Lords’ from the 90s and 2000s Justice League show?
“Bruce Wayne could do more to help Gotham than Batman by donating money.”
Bruce already helps Gotham a ton. But eliminating poverty wouldn’t eliminate violent crime. This is true IRL and in Gotham, most of Gotham’s villains are extremely wealthy. Gotham sucks because it’s corrupt, like many places IRL.

I really wanted you to touch on the whole "Robins are just child soldiers to help with Batman's crusade" argument because it honestly drives me up the fucking wall with how much media is using that dumbass rhetoric. Like Titans and Crisis on Infinite Earths. NO! That's not the point of the Robins. Dick Grayson saw his parents murdered in front of him, and Bruce knew what he could become if he was left unchecked. As we know from Young Justice:
"Robin needed to bring the man who murdered his family to justice."
"So that he could turn out like you?"
    "So that he wouldn't."
Batman sees himself in Dick Grayson and wants to make sure that he can properly raise him and use this anger he has into a good outlet. The problem is Batman is a very flawed and nuanced character so what he's doing for Dick and eventually the other Robins might not be the best, but it's what he knows. He might not be a perfect parent but what he does, does in fact help them. Dick Grayson is a genuinely good dude, and a fun person in both his vigilante persona and his regular persona. Does he look like a "soldier" to you? I know people will bring up Red Hood, but I feel like Batman adopted Jason too late, he was probably too damaged to properly help him. But he saw him being a troublemaker, he was still saddened by Dick moving on, so he adopted him. Tim Drake essentially strongarmed him because he knew he needed a Robin or else he would become a fucking killer if he didn't have a Robin, and Damian is... well... his actual son. And the reason HE is literally a child soldier is because he was raised from fucking birth BY THE LEAGUE OF ASSASSINS! But that's not Batman's fault. God, I just fucking hate that argument and sick of seeing it in actual Batman media, because it is innately troubling.

if you cant explain why batman needs multiple sidekicks iteration in under a paragraph then you're just doing mental gymnastics. -The Justice Buster (which helped him solo the JL)
-The Hellbat Suit (Which he used to beat the brakes off of Darksied)
-The fucking Batmanium/Imaginex/Whatever tf armor (which he used in Dark Knights: Death Metal to defeat an omnipresent/potent Batman who laughs who's power spanned across the entire multiverse. Albeit, it took some help from Superman and Wonder Woman who also had Batmanium armor)

Agreed. Anyone who thinks Batman doesn’t donate to good causes and just beats up homeless people clearly doesn’t understand the character. Bruce Wayne is literally a philanthropist who has donated millions of dollars to rebuild Gotham on several occasions.
Batman puts a lot of resources into helping fund charities that will improve the lives of average civilians of Gotham. It just happens that in a city with psychopathic clowns and gangs filled with super villains, that philanthropy alone isn’t going to crush crime. Throwing money at the situation isn’t going to stop Firefly from burning down City Hall, in those situations Batman is necessary.

I’d agree that he’s more often himself as Batman and that’s more how he thinks of himself, but there are elements of wearing a mask and of being his genuine self as both Batman and Bruce Wayne. For example, if he’s chatting with Alfred around the house, that’s a genuine aspect of him. If he’s showing up to a series of parties with a different super model on his arm at each one, that’s a mask. As Batman, I’d say we see more aspects of who he genuinely is, but he’ll also often put on the mask of being a monstrous creature of the night (especially in his early days when he was more myth than man).

If you're bringing the heroes together, what generally ends up resulting is that guys like Superman, Flash, and Green Lantern have to get nerfed, but Batman has to get elevated to some version of the character that's not particularly compatible with the solo version of the character.
There are other issues, too. The DCAU guys tried to balance the JLA by making Batman the brains and the others could keep most of their brawns... but then they decided sidelining Batman wasn't a lot of fun, so Batman ended up being the brains AND being useful in combat, while the others don't have much smarts to provide.

The last point you made is the most complicated one imo and it seems, by your explanation, that you actually agree with us that say that and you essentially said what we’re saying lol. It seems like it’s more a getting lost in semantics type of thing. Bruce is still Bruce as in he is a normal guy for the most part that cares about people and wants to do the right thing, but he’s more like Batman in personality than he is the billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne. That part of him is definitely a persona, and I’d say him being Batman to the extreme is also a persona to a degree. When people say that Bruce died in that alley with his parents that night and only Batman was left, it moreso means that Bruce has never been truly the same since then and a part of him died. There’s no doubt that his life would’ve turned out much differently had his parents not been murdered. How his Batman side is, is when he’s not in public he’s more reserved and is all about the mission to the point where it can separate him and push people away. It’s why he doesn’t really have conventional relationships, or at least he does/can up to a certain point. But every other misconception you pointed out is dead on.

About the Bruce Wayne being the mask. Before watching your video, I was at the opinion that Bruce is the mask and Batman is the real him, and after watching your video, you convinced me that his both. But, I initially thought about Bruce being the mask bc I remember watching an interview with Kevin Conroy, and they asked how does he distinguished his voice between Bruce and Batman. And I remember him saying that he always pretended that Batman is his true self and Bruce is just a disguise for the public. After that, I took it as a fact cause the Goat, who is the voice of Batman said so, but now. I do think your point makes more sense, given the fact that you look at the comics as well.

  • @MG_Spy
    @MG_Spy 8 місяців тому +2

My interpretation of the whole "Bruce Wayne is a mask" thing is that it isn't referring to how his loved ones see him, but how the general public does. Like you said, the playboy act is the persona of Bruce Wayne that he puts on at public events. But the way he acts out of the public eye, both in and out of costume when he's with his loved ones and allies, that's the real him.
And there are different facets of his true personality that come to the forefront depending on the situation, like you have the caring father, the harsh mentor, the calculating vigilante, etc, all of those are _still_ him. Because he's human and humans are never one-note, we adapt our demeanor and actions based on what's around us.

As much as I don't really like the "Batman is who he really is. Bruce Wayne is the mask." it is actually accurate to some versions. I think it's kind of a reductive take on the character... but whatever.
Also, technically Batman's ACTUAL rule is supposed to be "no killing with guns." Not "no killing" and not "no guns." However, I think the reason given in Under The Red Hood that basically explains if Bruce STARTS killing, even Joker... he'll eventually be killing jaywalkers and stuff. Like, Batman ISN'T sane. He has to draw the line before he even starts or he won't stop. And I think that makes him even better as a character. That said, it also allows for his Grapnel Gun and stuff lol.

correct me if im wrong but Wonder women once had her lasso of truth on batman and asked who he was and Batman said "Im Batman". Batman may actually see himself as batman as it allows him to embrass his inner darkness and pain and even fears. Bruce wayne is definitely a character that he tries to make the most out of when it comes to using his money for good. But he also has that persona so that way no one would even guess that he is Batman. though he is Bruce; Bruce wayne is more of a place holder.. while as Batman it allows him to show off all of his skills and talents such as engineering, intelligence, detective, martial artists, mentor, leader, and justice. Therefore even Bruce truly believes that deep down, he is more of Batman than he is Bruce Wayne.
I thought the no kill rule was silly at times as sometimes this rule allowed most of his villians to take advantage of him. Even though its obvious the writers know that Batman wouldnt have many interesting stories without his villians; still, your explanation for batmans reason to not kill still made a lot lf sense. Batman wants tk be a symbol of justice and hope only in a more darker way. Unlike most heros, Batman may not kill but he can be ruthless and brutal. He'll make a man wish he died. Batman can torcher a man both physically and mentally. However most of Batmans villains are immune to this effect due to their own special abilities that equip them the ability to stand a chance against Batman. But regardless, he literally has a symbol in the sky. So if obvious he does want to represent something that the ppl can look up to and something that evil would fear at the same time. If Batman had no villians he wouldnt be as interesting lets be honest. take marvels the Punisher for example. He kills but nobody gives a rats ass about him. So batmans no kill rule has some reality flaws but for the sake kf comic book fiction and entertainment and meaning.. Batman gets away with it. Therefore Batman is a super hero jusg like spiderman and superman who also dont kill. Batman just has different strategies. Meaning unlike spiderman and superman, Batman has no problem leaving his enemies on 1 HP.

It’s like Grayson, around his friends and family he’s not that dark but around crime aka when he’s prowling around as the Batman he’s stone cold and serious. It makes him seem broken, and Batman being always broken makes him less great to me. He’s Bruce Wayne and Batman like Kal El is Superman and Clark Kent or Dick Grayson is both Nightwing, the first Robin and the last Flying Grayson. No matter what name or suit they’re using they’re still themselves, they’re not Two-face. If anything, Bruce Wayne is his true nature and Batman is still the mask made the night he lost his parents.

Here is a quote for the two points that I will make which should only make the first two justifiable: Here is a quote that people should remember “Mercy for an enemy should not come at the cost of their victims.” Especially in the case of those who do not want to change. People get criticized in real life for these kind of things for letting people live that would lead to more tragedy later. In any case, Batman can have his “No Kill Rule”, that is not going to stop people from calling him out on it, either that or they just don’t care and want to enjoy the story for what it is, even like bringing Joker back to life who would go back to being insane and would commit more terrible crimes. If you don’t want that, don’t make tensions like that would lead to any deaths in my opinion. That doesn’t stop his other iterations even after 1939 from killing as well, Movies, cartoons, comics, etc, just because they kill people do not take issue with that because they watch it for Batman anyway, even Reeves did kill, it is 1 for 1 scenario, either he kills or he doesn’t, and it is up to you to watch/read/play it or not, and just because they brought it up doesn’t justify it for someone else or does depending on taste, it just means people don’t care since it is clear they don’t focus on it compared to the rest of the story from what I have come to see and believe.
As for the being a poor people, those poor people are usually driven usually by desperation because just like in Batman begins that version has people driven by poverty and fear. Not saying that he doesn’t use his wealth to better the people of Gotham, how about bettering the correctional facilities like prisons or jails for those who are the result of said broken system or just doesn’t have remorse and straight up monsters, improve their security, improve the rehabilitation programs to make the Rogues Gallery not want to be psychotic killers. He literally has contingency plans to take down certain people, why not take contingencies to make them better people? That way crime would likely go down. The problem here is not just from within via corruption, but without too (criminals). And that would just clearly show the people that don’t want to be fixed and just willing to be the monsters that they are, it is justifiable for people in their universe to ask for the death sentence for those who don’t want to change despite given the Wayne’s help.

I'm going to push back on the whole "Batman is his true persona" point. If you think about it, we rarely ever see Bruce Wayne. Just because he's not in costume doesn't mean he isn't Batman. If he's sitting down doing Batman work in his jammies, he's still Batman. Bruce Wayne is the persona he puts on when he has to interact with the public. It's a false face meant to distance himself from Batman as much as he can. If Bruce is eating lunch in his kitchen but still talking about a Batman related topic, he's Batman. The persona permeates his entire private life and who he truly is. The only time we see Bruce Wayne is when he's in public, and then he's trying to convince people he's just another good-hearted gojillionair.

An arc addressing the "Batman beats up poor people" would be a great arc to bring back a cool Killer Moth.
You introduce Batman at an early stage when he is genuinely the emotionally stunted rich guy who beats up desperate people because he hasn't learned to differentiate the desperate from the depraved, then you have this behavior create Killer Moth to fight back against Batman's brutality. A guy who turns Batman's tactics and gadgets against him and confounds Batman with the ingenuity of prey animals. Decoys, mimicry, camouflage, etc.
Killer Moth isn't a Batman that protects Supervillains, he's a Batman who protects the people who Gotham forces to choose between getting beaten by Batman and the police or getting murdered by the Supervillains and crime bosses.
This discovery and regret for his behavior leads Batman to reinvest his efforts from just vengeance, to really trying to fix the system.
Killer Moth and his kind remain villains though, showing Bruce Wayne's projects aren't reaching the people they are meant to, this leads to Batman diving deeper into his detective side and discovering things like the Court Of Owls, etc, until in later arcs we might even see Killer Moth become Batman's informant and ally

Batman is like.. The Main personality, but Bruce Wayne is kind of a mood change thing. Whenever Batman is going through it Bruce Wayne deteriorates.. And as Batman does well, so does Bruce Wayne! They are of course one in the same, and he knows it. Though Batman Forever is not a good movie I love the quote " I am both Batman and Bruce Wayne, not because I have to be. But because I choose to be. "

People who say batman should kill joker or any other villain dont understand comics. The same thing can be applied to any comic book character with the amount of reappearances they have. You read comics long enough you’ll learn its all bs like an insanely long soap opera thats been going on for 70+ years. Thats why you should just create your own canon using different “canon” stories in your head that makes sense to you

First things first. Batman can do a lot of things with prep time. He can defeat/outsmart various Villans with prep time. He is a ninja after all. But that doesn't mean he's a universal threat and capable of doing things like lifting Thor's hammer which is said to only lift when the wilder is worthy. No amount of prep time can make someone be worthy for anything. Batman's prep time is in the welm of reality. Making plans and contingency plans when things goes off the rails or something unexpected happens. Yes he can do incredible things with prep time like any other ninja would. But to beat a god like being? Or even be worthy to lift Thor's hammer that's most likely not going to happen. He can get their respect and find whatever weakness he or the league can exploit but to beat clean one on one? No. Secondly it was said in multiple situations both in cartoons and possibly the comics (Because they came first) that Bruce calls himself Batman unless he is Bruce Wayne talking to a civilian. For example in Batman beyond Batman was able keep himself from being mind controled because the person in question called him Bruce. Bruce calls himself Batman. Not only that when Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman first met and all had the lasso of truth on them. Wonder Woman and Superman told their real names. Bruce said Batman. And I'm sure there's probably more examples then just these 2. Dislike it all you want. Batman is his true self and Bruce is his mask.

I agree with pretty much everything in the video however, in the nightmare sequence from Batman v Superman and from Zack Snyder's Justice League, I can only assume that given the climate of the world in that Universe around that time when Darkseid is taking over Earth that he'd have to resort to Heavy Artillery. I considered Zack Snyder's dceu more of an elseworlds tail than anything so Affleck's Batman never bothered me that much and honestly is probably my favorite take on the character in live-action. To make the long story short if the story calls for Batman to fall deep down that hole of giving up his morals only to emerge from that whole once again as the Batman we all know, I don't have an issue with that. As long as it's only a short-term phase. And I've been a huge Batman fan since I was five so nobody needs to question my fandom. As far as all of the Batman actors ever, Kevin Conroy is the goat rip

One opinion I hate on Batman is him using high-tech armors strips him away of his relatable human abilities to adapt and makes him more like Iron Man than an actual Batman.
The thing is, he's a superhero with no superpowers who lives in a world where a huge portion of the villains he and his friends must face are literal gods or at the very least beings that can be compared to gods when it comes to how powerful they are. He may be the most skilled martial artist and detective on Earth, but he's still a normal human being at the end of the day. Thus, when it comes to dealing with individuals that can shatter planets with a single punch, to say that Batman gets stomped by them would be a huge understatement. And as a superhero tasked with protecting the entire world and beyond, he must find a way to make up for this stomp against him. Plus, even when putting the using high-tech armors thing aside, I think Batman and Iron Man have enough similarities to make the comparison between them work.
Also, 8:38 why does it feel so heartwarmingly wholesome to me?

The thing about the "prep time" deal is it kinda just waves away any real argument or attempt at imagination. Kinda like a lot of "who would win in a fight" there's not really a story in pointing out that superman is invincible and could lobotomize Bruce with his laser vision a mile away. The story comes from in how you get there and how the two could believably conflict with each other. Batman preps for Superman specifically cause there are factors in the DC universe where superman could be compromised, same with the rest of the justice league, which is outlined in the Babel story. and the whole point of THAT story was batman's paranoid preparation being used against him and his friends. It's not and has never been a Do Anything gimmick cause that leads for shitty stories, and evidently, shitty tiktok videos.

The first point is stupid to anybody who knows even the basics of politics that simply throwing money at a problem is not enough to fix it
Batman not killing people by itself isn't the problem, it's the fact the world doesn't react like it should. If people like Joker and Scarecrow are so dangerous and have proven time and time again they won't change, have the authorities put'em in the chair or why doesn't the mob hire people on the inside and make sure these Batman villains "Commit suicide" since I seriously doubt the mob that controls everything would want a bunch of lunatics causing mayhem everywhere as that would be bad for business. Same issue I have with Court of Owls, that idea by itself is fine but it's all just a thinly veiled excuse to keep the status quo going
I've got nothing to add to the loner thing. I would prefer people write the loner thing less as it does make him come of as incredibly angsty (and not in a cool way)
The prep time thing again is just silly to the point that it's a meme now. The problem with this is that in order for Batman to be able to defeat anyone with prep time, everyone has to be an idiot. Like what's to stop someone just as smart or even smarter than Batman from doing the same thing
I also don't like the idea of Bruce Wayne being the mask and Batman is the real person as that kinda misses the point (doesn't help that some Batman writers and producers have said that), Bruce Wayne is why Batman exist in the first place. He's not The Punisher, Frank Castle was already screwed up and was waiting for an excuse to happen so he could go on killing people and the death of his family was exactly that now if Batman was written more like that then that idea would make alot more sense.

I dont like the "Bruce is the fake identity, Batman is the real one" concept either for the way its prtrayed, but i do on some level see a good character point there. Bruce Wayne is indeed still the authentic person, but psychologists have taken a look at how the anonymity of Batman allows Bruce to act on his less thab socially acceptable emotions, such as rage, that he cant as bruce wayne. I think in that way, Batman can sometimes be the true identity.

I feel like with the last point we’re all just getting lost in semantics, because you actually agree with the people that have the whole “bruce is the mask” take. I think it comes down to what we want to identify as when he is Bruce and when he is Batman, separate from when he’s wearing the mask. Is he Batman when he’s interrogating a thug upside down or when he’s have a rooftop conversation with Dick. Is he Bruce when he’s helping Damien at the manor or when he’s putting on a show at a gala? I think the point is that there are different personas, unrelated to when he’s wearing the costume, in contrast to Clark and Diana who are practically the same characters in and out of costume (insert famous lasso image here)

It will maybe a little out of context and crazy, but i hate writers turning Batman into an abusive, neglectful asshole and he's being painted as a dishonorable, scumbag, loser and asshole who is abusive, neglectful and who deserves the worst, nothing,to be miserable all the time,is someone who messes up everything (particularly in romantic relationships),who’s the worst at everything he does and who has no quality other than being a rich white man while Catwoman is everything perfect (imo it's the opposite, she’s shit btw) and he's getting degraged (imo) for the sake of making Catwoman look superior Mary Sue girlboss icon fantasy (particularly in Tumblr) (Come on people there are better girlbosses than Catwoman 😒😒) or villain (particularly Joker) glorification.
Granted, i'm not saying Batman is %100 perfect, but i think he's not as a horrible man as some paint him to be.
I also saw in tumblr "Batman beats mentally ill people"
I have nothing agaisnt mentally ill people and may God give them peace, oportunity to get treatment and good qualified life as soon as possible and i'm not denying Batman has mentally ill enemies.
But we also should remember that Batman's villains aren't innocent people either.
Like Harley, for example, she participated in nuking of Metropolis in Injustice or actively tortured my boy Jason just because she's salty that Joker took a like on the poor boy and literally massacred a kindergarten full of children in Arkham Games.

Another reason why so many people spout the "batman beats up on poor people" rhetoric is because of the whole "eat the rich" rhetoric, either that of their trust fund babies themselves who have self-hartred because they see someone like Bruce Wayne helping people with his money and they get pissy, because they know they will never do the same with their money due to them being selfish and entitled

  • @insupportofjunhado

Superheroes beating up poor people is a misconception started by the comic books themselves, comic books like The Authority under writers like Mark Millar. He wasn't the first, The Authority wasn't the first, but that's the standout example to me because it was published by DC Comics themselves. When a company doesn't even know they're own material they're beyond my help. Sadly, DC is the origin of and retains the rights to a few properties I actually care about, so they'll likely never be off my radar entirely.
