Damian Wayne is the MOST HATED Robin

  • Damian Wayne is the fourth major Robin in the Batman Family, making his debut in DC Comics after Dick Grayson as Nightwing, Jason Todd as Red Hood, and Tim Drake made their presence known in comics. He's definitely the most controversial with his introduction, being the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia Al Ghul. His origin shares some resemblance to that of Cassandra Cain, Batgirl. Damian has made appearances in the DC Animated Movie Universe (DCAMU) New 52 animated movies like "Son of Batman" and "Justice League Dark: Apokolips War," where Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and the rest of the Justice League fight Darkseid. The "Injustice" games have him join Superman's regime, especially in "Injustice 2." The "Harley Quinn" Animated Series features him as Robin, as well as his supposed role as Batman in the cancelled Arkham game set ten years after "Batman: Arkham Knight." His next appearance is set to be in James Gunn's DC Extended Universe (DCU) reboot with "The Brave and the Bold.

The only reason Damian is hated is because every time someone tries to give him character development and make him more than the "Selfish Bat-Brat blood son", they undo it and revert him to an annoyance which is terrible to see because I genuinely like Damian in certain continuities.

"Character Development" in the modern age is really just removing any traits from a character that might cause conflict with others in the cast. Ever notice how it's only ever the prideful, selfish & confident characters that need "development" to be well-written?

I love all the Robins, but Damian is just the most intriguing to me personally, he isn't my favorite character, but his potential is what draws me in. He's awful at first, but that's kind of the point of him, he's supposed to be a new issue for the family to figure out how to adapt to.
I understand not liking him, but frankly, people hate wayyy too much on his character, especially because his first introduction has him being terrible to everyone, and people can't seem to move past it.
But just try and imagine you're this 10yr old child who has been raised to kill and claim your "birthrights" since birth, like you were literally are created and groomed for these purposes!
And then your mom abandons you in a different country with a father who doesn't know you existed who you thought would want you immediately, and brothers you've been raised to believe are below you and less than you because of your blood relations, and none of these people act like how you were expecting them to. And you're now stuck in a situation with basically strangers who hate you and your existence and don't understand or believe in any of what you've been taught your entire life until then. And there's probably more stuff I'm forgetting honestly.
I genuinely cannot imagine how I, as a 10 YEAR OLD CHILD raised to slaughter people, would deal with any of that. I'd probably be worse or more likely died immediately, at least Damian usually grows from the views and lifestyle he was GROOMED into, and becomes a better person(at least when the person writing him doesn't hate his character anyway).
He's a little kid at the start, and just left a death cult for the first time in his life, give the boy a break. If anything, you should be despising Talia's character for rasing him like this in the first place, or in other versions, violating Bruce to create him. But blaming Damian's character for acting like a brat, who was raised explicitly to be a brat, makes so little sense.
Either way, I love all of the bat family, I have my favorites obviously, but I'm glad all of their characters were created because they all add something fun to the dynamic. Hating on one character for specific writing someone did is just wasting your energy. "Canon" isn't real at this point, so you might as well just pick you're favorite bits and ignore what you don't like, because getting mad at it doesn't do anything but fuel anger that won't do anything.
And btw, I do not hate people who dislike Damian, that's not what my comment is meant for, so please do not think I'm upset at people for their personal opinion. I'm just frustrated I find more hate on his character than anything more interesting when I'm looking up stuff about Damian's character, tbh.
Enjoying these characters is supposed to be fun and a break from sad and boring reality, let it be fun for yourself!

So true actually, and I've always thought how ppl can expect a kid raised in a VERY toxic way since his birth to act all normal and friendly, besides that I truly can't imagine the process of adaptation for Damian. If you think about it, his life got turned upside down by his mother when she gave him to Bruce. He could kill before, nope, not anymore, he had to train no matter what, he had to get the tasks done even if he died in the process before, but guess what, not anymore. And the whole mindset of the people around you changes. It's just too much

The thing about Damien Wayne (to me, anyway!) Is that his character only really works when the other major Robins were there first. Dick, in particular, is extremely important to Damien's characterization, because it's not Bruce who managed to get through to him and encourage Damien to be kind, it was DICK!
Dick is essential to Damien's character growth because he is the driving force behind Damien _choosing_ to be good. Because Dick was angry and vengeful once, but then he found himself a support system (outside of Bruce's largely unhelpful ass. love the guy but he's like a solid C parent, and was like a D during Dick's tenure) and grew into someone who chooses to be kind. He's helpful, empathetic, friendly and passionate, both in and out of the mask. Dick's unwavering belief in Damien, and his leading by example, is what finally got Damien's head out of his ass. Damien began to become a true hero because he wanted to do right by Dick. Furthermore, was Dick who softened Batman to a point where he could take on the other Robins; I don't think Damien would have wanted to be Robin to the Batman before Dick.
Jason is important because he is the cautionary tale. Jason is a reflection of what Damien could be - angry, violent and vengeful... or dead. It's easier to sympathize with Damien because we have seen what anger has done to Jason. It makes sense why Bruce is so determined to keep this kid on the right path, even beyond his strong morals, because he has already lost a child to their own anger. To me, Jason is what makes Bruce's dogged faith in Damien more believable, and their relationship so much more meaningful, because Bruce has seen Jason crawl his way back into something resembling heroism, even after everything - so too could Damien.
Tim is the point of contrast. Tim is what Robin should be, the ideals and moral code that Damien lacks. Their conflict, mainly that Damien believes himself to be more worthy of the Robin mantle and thinks very little of Tim, is a driving force of Damien's character as he goes out of his way to one up Tim at every opportunity. And that he's forced to face the fact that he is *wrong* and Tim is/was the superior Robin in all the ways that truly matter is a very juicy internal conflict and turning point for Damien.
Furthermore, going from a friendly, bubbly robin with some shithead tendencies and a strong moral code straight to a spoilt, haughty brat who struggles with not killing just isn't nearly as interesting as watching the progression of Robins beforehand. Plus, it robs Dick of some really important characterization regarding the other two robins - Jason's replacement of him as Robin and subsequent death are two very important turning points in his character, and his experience with Tim is what allows him to handle Damien in the first place.
Also Damien and Stephanie have a really fun dynamic, I like when they're together. She's not really foundational to his character but I wanted to mention her because I think she's neat. Also him and Cass are great together! If he's going to be with any Bat other than Bruce going forward, I think she's a great choice. I've seen the idea of him becoming Nightwing's sidekick rolling around, and I'm not completely against it, but I would really like to see him and Cass together.

Dick Grayson does become Batman for a while in Grant Morrison’s run, and Damien is Robin fighting alongside him. In fact, when Bruce returned from “death” (he was time displaced in Final Crisis), he intended to stay retired as Bats and let Dick stay in the mantle, only when the New 52 era started and the comics semi-rebooted (Batman and Green Lantern mostly kept their continuity) did Bruce become Batman again because the editors probably assumed newbies checking out the reboot would be confused otherwise.

@@doctordoom85 From what I remember, Dick and Bruce, much like Diana and Donna and Barry and Wally were co-sharing the mantles with their mentors which has been re-instated with Donna since Rebirth...it was just that Donna returned to wearing her Troia suits because she liked the style better than that armor she had (and too bad they didn't just use the regular WW suit with Troia colorations like on one cover+ the new eagle beaked W that Donna introduced before applying it to Diana, because that whole 2006-2010 suit was initally meant to be Donna's suit as a throwback but later Diana got it...all because Circe and Heracles didn't like why Diana retired and couldn't play with their "favorite toy" anymore.)...and they would implement different things to distinguish Wally and Dick from Bruce and Barry. Here's what they did on the Batman side- Dick would wear the old Adam West suit with a new Bat-buckle like that of his wife's...meanwhile on the Flash side of things Wally had pretty much been wearing his Timmverse series design since S:TAS dropped and it slowly changed to the JL design with only minor modifications made here and there when needed...(should have really kept the KF style mask and speed metal blue though...those looked properly Wally and the blue made his ginger hair pop more).
That said...that 2010 story of Diana's also features a more appropriate for Donna costume and story...since Straczjynski admitted to not having any idea about Wonder Woman...and having no idea is Donna's department....and since the soft-rebooting occurred in 2011, and that proposed 5G timeline mentions during 2011 that Donna was Wonder Woman... Oddyssey makes way more sense with Donna than Diana...but falls into that "make the mentor more like their former protegè" trap that began with Hal in 2005 by making him more like Kyle, then Barry got that in 2008, Diana in 2010, Clark in 2011, Bruce....well he's always been Bruce.
Back to the mentor mantle shares- Conner didn't really get to be Superman at that time because it was more or less implied during DCU: The 52 era that had the Flashpoint not happened that six year old Chris Kent would have become Superman 2.0...and if you must use Kryptonian names for him...use K'riss-El...he is not "Lor-Zod"...and he doesn't like it when anyone forgets that "My name's Chris/Christopher!" ...and Garth didn't really seem to be interested in mantle sharing, unless he was supposed to have become Aquaman at that point the way that Jackson/Kaldur has become in most cases and how Lagoon Boy got the promotion in the Young Justice animated universe...also it was implied that Kara was gonna be Superwoman too...because all the Silver Age Sidekicks+ Kyle and Jesse as newcomers after the Crisis were strongly considering taking over their mentors mantles (if they hadn't already since Jesse just swapped parents' codenames by that point she still uses Liberty Belle while dressing as Quick)...JLA or not except Nightwing...because he's Nightwing.

I did go back and read past comics - like earlier Nightwing and Tim's Robin run as well as everything introducing Damian and just random Batman comics in general - but I think the fact that I started where I did really helped me latch on to Damian. However once Dick and Damian were split up, I found it hard to care as I didn't find his dynamic with Bruce to be even remotely interesting. There have been some stories in the comics since where I've still managed to enjoy him, but I came to the realization that so long as he's partnered with Bruce, I'm just going to find it hard to care. I admit that I was never Tim's biggest fan (I liked him, he was just never one of my personal favorites), but I find myself vastly preferring the stories I've read of him as Bruce's Robin to Damian's.
I will never hate Damian - I came to like him too much to do so. But I find that the amount of situations in which I love him are relatively small nowadays. Unpopular opinion, I'm sure, but despite Bruce hardly being around during the time, I miss the Dick!Bats days purely because just about every Batbook at the time was fun and/or interesting.

In THIS story Nightwing (Dick Grayson) AND the other three kids Bruce had, yes including Damian lived together as a family. The boys working together (along with Peter Parker) even easily came to the conclusion Harry was being abused. Even though the story wasn't and still isn't finished it was great watching then work together in their own way and keeping roughly with their personalities (Damian went about things more roughly-like a bull in a china store-than the others) to try and find out what he was hiding and try and 'make friends' with him.

I hate Damien because it was clear from the start that the growth they were "giving" to dick and tim after bruce died was not going to stay, and that this kid was going to stay on a robin. Tim earned it, Damian didn't. And tim has never recovered from that

He's my favorite Robin. They made Tim gay and Dick is Nightwing now, so he's not a Robin anymore. Red Hood is dope now as a character as well instead of being an angry orphan in a Robin outfit. Also, DW has the best Robin costume in The Bat-Family. 8:52

I'm gonna be honest I hate Damian because of the DCAMU. It may as well stand for Damian's Constant Aggrandizement Movie Universe, because he's the protagonist of 4 movies, no other character got that much love. Not Superman, not Batman, not any Justice Leaguer, and not any Bat Family Member nor Teen Titan.

Exactly. The kid was raised to be the ultimate heir to his grandfather Ra's Al Ghul in the League of Assassins. Talia left him under Bruce's protection, fearing that Deathstroke would go after her son.

I also wish they would age him up more. Maybe do a time skip where he’s 19 and we see him with a cool new suit or maybe there would be an official series of Damian Wayne being Batman(not Batman 666). But his suit as Batman was awesome.

Ironically that is also what happened to the Injustice writer. He despised Damian but then he read some Damian stories and changed his mind.
Then he wrote Dceased which was great and did Damian justice so he made up for his mistake with injustice Damian.

Dick Grayson is The G.O.A.T. of all Robin's & sidekicks undisputedly. However, Damian Wayne is the best & has the most potential. Damian is the son of Bruce Wayne & Talia, was raised since birth not only to be the perfect assassin & hand to hand combatant but also, to replace Ra's Al Ghul. He's has a genius level IQ & intellect, is a master strategist, master tactician, ruthless, has adopted Batman's no kill rule, but still has no problem killing. He's only like 13 & is still learning getting better.

Jason should be in more adaptations. He doesn’t even have to be shown just mentioned as the dead robin. That should be an important part of Batman’s story when taking on new robins. Similar to how s4 of young justice mentions him as something Bruce won’t let happen again.

It would be interesting to see if either A) Red Hood is either a fixture in Gotham when Damian arrives since he's new to the city, he doesn't know the players in the criminal underworld or B) Jason hasn't come back **yet** and his return is what brings together Dick, Barbara, Tim, and Damian to defend Gotham from this young buck looking to carve up the criminal underworld.

I'm not going to lie: I was a Tim stan. Dare I say, Tim Drake is the Wally West of Robins: Gave fans a majority of the things they like about the character (lore, personality, costume, etc.) but every future and past person who has the mantle afterwards keep borrowing from them to the point the audience doesn't remember where the origin point was. Great example: Jason died in the Robin suit with the short-shorts and little boots. When Time officially became Robin, he was the first Robin to have darker colors, his own arsenal, and of course, pants. Jason dying in the old Robin costume also symbolized the death of what Robin used to be. Future adaptations and reboots, however, retconned all the earlier Robins having costumes similar to Tim's, lessening the importance of Tim taking up the mantle.

Frankly, the current version of Damian Wayne I mostly care for right now is the one from the DCAMU. He went from self-entitled to being a true Robin, member of both the Titans and the Batfamily. His relationship with Raven in the films, mostly JL vs. TT, Judas Contract, and Apokolips War, solidified his character arc for me.

    • @NightRunner2099
      @NightRunner2099 Місяць тому +3

His relationship with Raven is one of the things I like the least about those movies. Raven is treated pretty badly in it. It's mostly in favour of Damian's character and doesn't do anything for Raven and her story arc. She's always overshadowed by him and most of the time feels intentionally made less competent so that Damian can have some relevancy by pushing her around to do things. And in the last movie her role was basically to be there for to make his arc come full circle and not because she had some story of her own. They even waste her white form in favour of Damian.

Thank you 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 😎. I can't help but agree with everything you've said here.
The dcmu was also my introduction to Damian, and he ranges from tolerable like in Bat Blood to insufferable like Justice League vs Teen Titans.
It would be one thing if we are supposed to dislike the character. However, those dcmu movies feel like they want you to like him and see his growth, but I feel like that growth never really came despite me waiting for it.
In addition, when people defend this character they either do so by mentioning his backstory or finding his behavior cute. To which I and others respond with a resounding: his background explains him but doesn't excuse his actions, and no one IRL would find this behavior cute 🤔.
Therefore, instead of rooting for Damian to become the next Robin we are instead eager to see him get his face blown off by blue beetle or get his butt whooped by Deathstroke.
Lastly, you brought up Injustice and honestly the animated film version is where I actually like Damian. There he regrets killing Nightwing accidentally and shows a lot more respect to his father and is likable. Similarly, I found him likable in Batman vs Ninja Turtles where they balance him being a kid and a warrior well.
Those examples show that this character can be done right, as opposed to versions like the injustice 2 game where you don't blame Batman for disowning him. Speaking of which at 4:39 Batman could have easily been like "you weren't an accident, your mother drugged and r*** me to bring you here" 🤨.

My biggest gripe with Damian as Robin even tho I love him is that sometimes it just doesn’t make sense timeline wise. Like how is Damian Robin and Barbra is his batgirl counterpart when it should be stef in my opinion. Not only is it erasing other robins but batgirls too.

    • @huntertezz
      @huntertezz Місяць тому

Barbara is not his batgirl counterpart😂. His Batgirl is Stephanie.
Its stupid to blame Damian for that batgirls when its clear he has nothing to do with it. Its just Dc's obsession with regressing Barbara and keeping her as Batgirl instead of letting her be Oracle.
