I love my Kindle. Our family owns hundreds of books, I feel like a home that doesn’t have/display books looks cold. But I love my Kindle, I listen to audiobooks from the library as I do housework and crochet. Also love reading in bed with a Kindle. Thanks.
Ditto! And I hate ads. I too ignore the brands or products on purpose when I see them 😅😊 it’s so annoying. Also, I guess it helps my attempt at minimalist journey (more of essentialist, I’d say).
I especially agree with you about subscriptions and cars. I long to own software again. And would kill to have a good old fashioned key to unlock and turn on my car. Hmph.
This vlog is great--I agree with all of your dislikes, and learned about a couple of new things from your likes that I think I would like to ‘plug’ into now, too . . . and it should be mentioned that not taking an hour to say what can be put forth in less time is so appreciated, respectful of your viewers. It is heartwarming, to see that your subscription numbers are rocketing.
Hi Hen, I totally agree with your can live without list. I’ll add one more - surveys. From doctors offices, hospitals, grocery store, etc. , I get inundated with surveys on my phone or email. I stopped doing them just because it’s so annoying. BTW, great video. Thx
I know they can be annoying. But, it can help improve service. I used to have a job with a help desk survey that enabled us to make some changes to our processes that pleased customers and actually made our jobs simpler. 😊 I will do them for healthcare uses. But, not everything.
Thanks for the great information that is very relevant for me. I'm 64, retired and living hours away from my only living brother. I've been on my own most of my life and have had to do for myself. You have come up with some great advice that I haven't thought of.
I honestly miss the pre-cell phone anonymity we could enjoy. If you call and I’m out, oh well. I’ll listen to my messages once I get home and get back to you whenever. 😊This might be a hot take; but I could go back to a landline no problem - if it wasn’t MORE expensive than my cell plan.
And added to the smart phone problem is that people get annoyed when you don’t answer or text back right away! Really? We all have lives that we’re living! 🤦♀️
@@MasteringMidlifeWithHeidimy friend has that focus feature on 24/7 saying they have their phone on meditate… I appreciate see that as a reminder that it may be tomorrow before I hear back. On my own phone I turned off the features that tells you if I read your message. Few messages are urgent enough to require instant replies.
@@MasteringMidlifeWithHeidi actually I prefer text to calling and talking on the phone. I worked call centers for years. Not because I enjoyed the work. But, my skills got pidgeon-holed and I couldn't break out. Anyway, now I'm retired and I never call anyone on the phone unless I have to. I'm just so over it. Oh, and, I'm an introvert. 🥴
@@PaulaBallard-r2w That’s certainly understandable 😊 and I’m not saying calls are better. I’m simply saying we’ve gotten into this instant gratification mode where we *expect* someone to return a call or text immediately… and that’s what I don’t like. Especially when the other person complains that you didn’t get back to them right away! 🤦♀️
Yesterday I spent 3 1/2 hours trying to find someone at AT&T who would/could issue a refund for a closed account with a credit balance. Phone numbers were wrong, I was disconnected, getting a real person was nearly impossible, I was told I needed to wait 60 days and call back and more. Businesses shouldn’t be allowed to operate this way.
@@TealDiana they’d charge consumers way more if they actually had REAL people to handle service issues. Good customer service is almost a thing of the past…like dinosaurs.
I like your lists! After my neighbor’s dog got lost I purchased an Apple Air tag to attach to my dog. They sell holders just for these that will attach to the dog’s collar. When I was dog sitting at my son’s house one time I couldn’t find my dog, he was inside the house, so I used the air tag to find him. Hopefully he never gets lost, but it’s good to know that it works. 😊
Yes, I got a 4 pack of these & some of the holders to put on key rings, etc. My primary reason was to put somewhere inside a new knapsack I got to travel with that fits under the seats of planes & trains. It has a USB port for hooking up you laptop inside bag to a wall power socket outside, and a little zipper pocket inside related to it. That was the perfect place to put an AirTag so it can tell my phone to bark at me if I leave it behind somewhere.
Along the lines of smart plugs: Phillips Hue lights for me. There are others out there now that aren't as expensive, I got in on Phillips Hue lights when it was first released and oh my various gods they make such a difference. I can mimic daylight patterns, set any colour I want per bulb and room, organize lights, set light changes from morning to work hours, to gaming time, to winding down for sleep. I didn't see the value in it at first, but after spending a night long ago at a friend's who had them - I was sold. Especially during winter months, bringing sunshine into my home and letting them wake me up in the morning with a mimicked sunrise has had a huge effect on my mental health. 100% recommend.
I don't know what I'd do without a computer and/or cell phone, they kickstart my brain at 75 if I can't remember something the answer is only a few keystrokes away.
OMG I hate automated customer service in any form! It is totally useless IMHO. I am like you, if I call I want a live person for a real answer to a real issue. I used to use Alexa and I have one of the original devices, but since I found where it recorded what was said I decided I wasn't so sure it was safe to use. The thought of something listening all the time kind of freaked me out. I think I have become overly cautious when it comes to electronic devices and privacy/security. I enjoyed this video and it had some great info.
I think you're smart to be cautious. Alexa and others of its type record and use every thing you say and do. Their stated goal is to cater to your preferences. It is really to make the company maximum profits by selling your data continuously. I won't have one, ever.
I absolutely am with you on the apps. I HATE phone apps. Usually if I get one, I never use it. So I end up taking it off my phone. I like my phone "clean" so I can find the basics! I could not use an Apple watch due to my EMF sensitivity. They have more EMF's than an actual Apple phone does which is kind of scary!!!
My husband died thirty years ago. Even he said, way back, that the more techi the car gets the more things there are to go wrong. Good video as usual. Thanks Jen.
GPS is fine, when it works. I tend to check an online map before using it. My family and I were outside of Washington, DC when the GPS sent us in the wrong direction. My brother in law was driving and insisted that the GPS was correct until 30 minutes later when it told us to exit the expressway and head back in the opposite direction. This type of thing has happened on more than one occasion.
One major advantage of the Kindle (over hard copy books): You can expand the type size if you need to. Instant "large print" books for those of us with more silver than not. 😉
I got smart plugs on a recommendation you made in another video, and they have changed my life! I also put in a smart bulb on my front porch -- no more fumbling with keys in the dark! And the smart bulb can change to something like 5.3 million colors. For Christmas, the light goes red and green. 😆 In addition to the ones you've named, one favorite technology is Merlin, the bird ID app, especially for bird calls. I just record a bird I'm hearing, and it will try to match it with birds in my area (I downloaded only my region to reduce the amount of memory it takes on my phone). Related would be PlantNet, a plant/tree ID'ing app. Snap a photo, and the app tries to match it.
I have always had a huge library. When I would go on vacation, I would take a bag of books to lug around. Not any more. I take my Kindle oasis with hundreds of books, magazines, etc. I still have my books, but I love my e reader.
I agree with most of your list completely! The car... if I could afford it (and the upkeep. And fuel!!!) I'd go to a classic car like a 1967 Chevy Impala immediately, no computers at all. I don't like that they can be controlled by some anonymous person somewhere, on top of the car just shutting down whenever something puts its knickers in a twist. I'm not a fan of Miss A and the fact that someone is always listening, even though I know we're also getting that through our phones and other devices. I don't want one that actively talks back to me, although I get the convenience of it. If it weren't for emergencies and the security-blanket feeling of cell phones, I'd go back to a landline there, as well (and never use it--I HATE talking on the phone!) But I do love the security of knowing I can get to my kids instantly if they have a problem, even though I miss the days when I could go for a drive and no one had any expectation of still being able to reach me/track me down via that constant tether. I do also love Google Maps, however. That's probably my favorite phone feature after texting. E-readers... I have a thing about them. I have a couple to check the formatting on my own books when I publish them, but otherwise I don't use the e-reader at all because I've found I interact differently with the text than I do with a real book, and it makes the reading experience less enjoyable to me. I'll keep lugging books around with me for now. I wish I did like e-readers more for that reason, but it is what it is. I still prefer paper for notes and things, as well, even though I'm on my laptop 24/7. :) I suspect our generation is the last one that will have such a yes/no relationship with all this new technology. The ones after us have all grown up with it their whole lives, it's just normal to them. I often miss the days before this brave new world. *sigh*
Hi Jen. This was excellent. I agree with all your "can live without"! I am not as up-to-date as you with tech, which continues to change so quick. I will look into the Smart Plugs and Doorbell Video - so thank you for providing links. I'm still not on board with having Miss A or Miss S in my home 🙄 While I understand the convenience, sometimes I feel we are becoming too dependent on tech. As you mentioned about cars, I find the navigation very helpful, but do I need the car to tell me when to brake, drive, take a coffee break? Yes, dash back-up cameras are very handy, but I've driven 40+ years without using one! I do agree it is important to not be left behind as the world changes!
I agree with the things that you don't like, especially the ones where there's a subscription where you have to pay a monthly charge all the time, for everything you want to use.I would prefer to own. I did miss the listing of e-ink readers you were looking into. I enjoy my tablet because I don't have to pay Kindle to put a book on a Kindle I received from someone other than Kindle. Great video. I remember getting dishes, etc, from the grosery store in the '60s and collecting 'green stamps' and 'blue chip' stamps.
I have a fire tablet and I love it for reading books! I use Overdrive and can get just about any book I want for free. I have no issue with power drainage or reading issues. I also hate new cars with all the "extras" that only break and I'd never use anyway. That's why I drive a 20 year old car.😁 My husband's new truck has an owner's manual that is 6 inches thick!😐
I totally agree on all your dislikes, but especially the car one! I'm 26, and I live somewhere with decent public transport, but will need a car at some point for work. Unfortunately, everything that I've found is either too big, too techy, or both. Usually both 😂💔
I agree on all of these. I LOVE my eReader. I have two dedicated eReaders (one lives at home and one lives in my work bag for lunch reading), as well as an eReader app on my phone. I also have a tablet I mostly use for knitting patterns when at home and as my Echo, streaming, and internet device when I travel.
My list is pretty similar to yours. I'm relatively "techy". When I was still working at my last job (in my late 60s), I was told to move to another cubicle that was closer to the rest of my team after the person who had that cubicle retired. The IT tech team moves the computer and phone equipment, but they were tied up setting up a conference for the executives. The tech guys says, I'll come back later today to move your equipment. But I moved it all and connected myself. It's more involved than home computers because of the lan cables etc. Anyway, he was fairly shocked he came back, and I was all set up and working in my new cubicle. - Things I love are Miss A. I don't even care if she's spying on me LOL. Mostly I use her as a timer for cooking, playing songs, telling me the time at night, so I don't have to hurt my eyes looking at a clock, basic information, calculating the number of days - sometimes I'll even ask her to tell me a joke. The jokes are so corny. But I do love store apps, especially restaurant apps! I don't care if they have my information. I love getting the rewards. Maybe it's a sense of feeling that they appreciate my business, so I love when I get a free "any size specialty coffee" or large sandwich when I read a certain number of points. I don't know if they had it in Canada, or you may be too young to remember, but supermarkets in the US used to give stamps to put in books, and when you have a certain number of pages or books, you could get a free object like a cooking pot or wall clock. It seems that ended in the early 1960s, but I don't remember exactly. Anyway, there was a sense of accomplishment in the process. - What about the AI apps? I just started using the one issued in the Windows software to make some Christmas graphics and writing greetings. For now, it just seems like the results are a sophisticated Google search, but it was kind of cool. We can't stop the AI train, so we might as well take advantage of it.
If you use FIREFOX browser, you can set it to Delete Cookies on Exit. I'm not sure if thats already too late, but it seems like the deletion might keep things from being worse.
I am not a fan of Ms. A. We have one at work just to play music & her performance is hit or miss. Plus I feel like it's intrusive. I have timers for inside lights & dusk to dawn light bulbs for my porch lights, which have served me well. I love the dusk to dawn setting on my plug for outside Christmas lights. That technology has been great for me, while I am at work or running errands.
I love my Ms. A and like you, I have her in every room. I also have some solar outdoor cameras and smart plugs and smart bulbs (in the ceiling lights) throughout the house. I have different schedules setup for when they go on and off based on where I am. I can also turn things on and off when I am away from home to make it appear as if I'm home. Freaked my one neighbor out because she saw us leave and then I turned on one light and turned off another lol. I also have several UPS** (unlimited power supply) boxes throughout the house and one is hooked up to my internet router and security hub so that in the event the electric goes out - which it does here often - then we still have internet and security. The solar means that I rarely ever need to take down the cameras to charge. I have them high enough to be a pain to do that too! (**only recommend the UPS with an encased lead-acid battery and not a lithium battery due to the inability of extinguishing a lithium battery fire)
I am with you about Alexa and my 90yo dad is fascinated by her answering my questions as well as how the Waze app tells me when there is a car on the shoulder ahead, etc. My grocery store was torn down due to age and a larger beautiful one just opened. I rely on the app to maneuver my way around as I'm learning the new layout. I also get a preview of the sale ad so I can plan ahead. I am still learning to use the digital coupons as I don't buy a lot of name brand items. Thanks for a great video and brightening my Wednesday morning. I listened as I was getting ready for work this morning and then watched when I arrived home this evening.
I was in that camp - not sure where to start. So I waited until a Miss A device was on sale, decided on a budget based on the sale items, and then bought an Echo for my home. Once I was comfortable with that, I bought another. Hope that info is helpful and might encourage you.
Your youtube channel has blown up. Your channel was one of a few featured in another video where they were talking about starting your own youtube and how fast channels are growing. Im so excited for you. I love this episode. I will be purchasing some of those products. Merry Christmas Jen 😊
I love my smart plugs too. I just put one in the room with my guinea pigs to turn on and off their light. Since we have so few hours of sunlight, and they can’t see well in the dark, I thought it would be better for them just to have some daylight help on a regular basis in case I forgot to turn on the light. So handy.
If you like Smart plugs, then you will also love smart bulbs! In my office I have two lamps and I switch the lights to LED colors when I'm on a zoom or recording! It adds a little background ambiance to my videos.
Hi Jen, Thank you for another Excellent video with terrific, timely information! Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas and your continued success in the new year!
We have light switches that are smart and can be put on a timer but didn’t think about using smart plugs for the Christmas tree and lamps! We have external timers for those but using on the app would be really easy!
You are so right that keeping up with tech is so important especially as we get older. The tech is so affordable many times and can be a huge help to us as we get older and if we live alone. Another great vid ❤👊👍🙌
I agree with all your dislikes, and my favourite amongst your likes is my Kindle. I recently travelled overseas and had with me an enormous selection of books on my Kindle. E books are also generally cheaper to buy than physical books.
Omg youtube ads. I don't mind ads, but they throw them in with no consideration. They're relentless, repetative and irrelevant. I will NEVER buy anything from these ads and maybe even the entire company! And the subscription price to get rid of them is ridiculous. K rant over lol. For the rest, totally agree with everything. Although I love my online food shopping for groceries. So much time and energy saved!
I’m with on your lists, especially with the one where you can’t talk to a live person too easily. Sometimes they make it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to reach someone. Case in point: Xfinity. Trying to get to a live person is like pulling hairs! 😡
@@hmp9468 This, and once you figure out the "number code", write it down. For example, you may find that after dialing, you hit 1 (english), then 2 (phone) then 0,0,0 to get rep (this is an example, not accurate). Once you have the sequence, it goes very fast.
I don’t like using apps, either - I prefer to bank, etc. using websites. Really tired of the “how are we doing” surveys and being “subscribed” when I know I didn’t to promotional emails after an online purchase - and then having to spam them when I can’t get unsubscribed. I also still have some of my favorite physical books, but love using my tablet to read - my eyes really appreciate the enlarged print, and I can read in the dark. I’ve thought about getting a “Mz. A”, too, but have an abnormal fear of being tracked or spied on😳 - also, my name is very similar so it might get confusing. Merry Christmas!
You're almost a TECHIE! LOVE IT‼️ Like you, I LOVE "real books", but also love how I can carry as many as I want on my Kindle App. How I can notate & cross reference my self-education. One question ... are you not concerned about the bears when you go on your walks??? 😮
Nice topic, Jen! You've taught me to look for more features of my Ms A, and I also use more than one virtual assistant (so useful!). I'm also agreement on your they-should-disappear techs!
I so agree! The cars…..scary ability😂 Sometimes, I just give up with some of these websites….I kind of feel like I am really having to hustle to keep up with them all. Love your channel. i am silver and single also. From Flagstaff AZ.
I totally agree with you on companies and their endless options, when all you want to do is to speak to a real person! It is so infuriating when you just want to get something resolved! 🙄
Surprised you didn't mention Siri since you are an Apple user. I use both Ms. A and Siri to assist with various tasks. Use of either or both really is very helpful.
Hey Jen- Love the video. Ok I love A-Lady as well and I actually know one of the original creators of HER, as I did some volunteering on a committee in my little island town where she retired to a few years back. If you ask Alexa " who is Jordan Hay?" she will say something about her (that's the creator) and Jordan also told me (which I had no idea) that if you ask Alexa to RAP (which I have now many times) she does really funny raps for you. "Alexa can you do a Rap for me?" Its hilarious. So, I am a huge reader and especially actual book reader and if I had an addiction it would be to buying and keeping REAL books. That said, from traveling (as you know) taking my 5 books along (gulp I really used to do this) is not feasible and so I have been using a kindle since 2011 maybe (I forget) and love it for the travel fact and also the built in back light to read at night without lights on. I did however just buy a Kindle Scribe (literally just got) and I am going to try it out to see how I like a bit larger size and also the notetaking feature as I can take notes on books and also just normal notebook. I currently use a Remarkable Notebook and have for a year now. I have notebooks galore as I write and research a lot and have always used paper notebooks and just have LOTS and I was trying to see if actually writing in an e-format would work and on the remarkable it does. BUT of course the Remarkable does not allow kindle books...so I have to have a kindle regardless so I am going to see if the scribe can also be my notebook?? Time will tell. If you do notetaking I would say the investment of a good one like the remarkable is amazing as I can save notes to cloud and journaling etc. The tech hates I am with you on all. Oh the chat bots....WHY? I am sure they will improve as the AI stuff gets better and better , but its just the most frustrating thing. Lastly, the vehicle thing made me laugh but for me its just how to drive or get into new cars now! I still thankfully have my 1999 Lexus rx 300 (amazing long life and I am hoping she keeps chugging along) she only has 118K as I used to have company cars and traveled for most of my previous career. So, I have literally not looked at cars to buy since then and over the last few years of newer cars and just trying to open a rental car or something that most people know as they have a car in this decade....I have had to go back to counter and ask "what do I do here?" I had a friend a few years ago I visited that had a very fancy car and new and it basically did everything for you. code on door with finger and stuff like that. They left me with car to use as I housesat for them and I was stuck in the car and had a valet guy trying to help me figure it out...I am so comfortable with my old, yet reliable (knock on wood) lexus that I turn a key to get in and start and no GPS (its on my phone) or back up camera. As you mentioned, they break down and boy the tech on them is insane as well! Take care, Kimberly
Hello Jen! I've been subscribed for a while now. I know you'll pop 100,000 in no time. Love this episode. Thank you for sharing technologies you love and don't care for with us. I love your wildlife cam. Thinking I need one for my bird feeder station and to capture the cute but destructive javelina we have here in the mountains of the southwest. I love them really but they are a bit irritating when they help themselves to my garden. I'm glad you like Ms. A so much. I have one google equivalent but not sure I want one in each room of my house at this time. A piece of technology that I think would be nice is to have one (or many) of those bluetooth trackers. I think it would be helpful for pets just in case. Anything that you may need help finding. Tag it with a bluetooth tile and BAM you can find it. Keep your episodes coming friend. You are doing great!
So agree especially with your 5 dislikes. Another one is when an app says it is free only until you load it then the fee to use it comes up. Also having to pay to get rid of pop up while playing a game unless you pay to have them removed. Thanks for your video.
Miss A is one of my favorites also but I don’t use that name for her because too many people say it on my iPad or my television so mine are called Computer, and Ziggy. My TV it’s a Fire TV and I call her Echo. My iPad is probably my favorite thing. I seldom even watch my television. I just watch everything on the iPad. I’m not the kind of person that needs a big huge screen. I’d rather just have it sitting on the arm of the couch right beside me. I do love my smart plugs. It’s nice not to come home to a dark house if you’re out and about or on vacation, I have lights coming on and off at different times. Love my Ring doorbell. Another thing I don’t know if it’s considered technology is battery operated candles. I love my battery operated candles, they have built in timers. I recently got a electronic door lock for my garage door. I love it. 99% of the time I go in and out through my garage because that’s where my car lives, so I don’t have to take a key.
Excellent video. I agree with you and I learned some things. Even a crisis line that I need to call sometimes has a voice mail with options, every time you call. Makes no sense.
Hi Jen, thank you very much for this video. I found it very informative. I am looking into smart plugs myself and I will check out your links. Thank you for that. I think they will help a lot around the house. We also use Miss A in about three rooms in the house. I feel it funny when you said you don’t like subscriptions but as we UA-camrs ask people to subscribe to our channel just a thought that’s all, might laugh about. Looking forward to your next video thank you.
I agree 💯 on all of your don't likes, especially the apps. 😕 And especially the chat bots on phones. Like you, I need to talk to a human sometimes. Super annoying! 😠 Loved our chat, Jenn. 😂 Have a great week! --Paula in Ohio USA 🙋
I have programmed websites for years. Not all cookies are bad. I used cookies to keep track of the user and what they had selected. But, the cookie questions have gotten crazy. As a note however, they could do the same tracking without cookies if they wanted or needed to. The data is all there.
I have a Eupy security camera I use to watch my puppy when I'm not home. I can talk to him over a speaker in the camera. When not watching my puppy I aim the camera out the front window and can watch wild life (no bears like you have) and anyone driving up to my house. Eupy doesn't require using the cloud, which I think is more secure. I have a sim card for it. I agree with all your choices except Ms A. She's too creepy.
Thanks very much Jen for another wonderful chat , and I agree with you totally regarding the second list of your less favourite tech's. Is an e reader easier on the eyes for someone with impaired vision please? I'm going to try one of your patrons new channels, enriching hobbies. I'll let you know how it goes. Take care, David. xx
One thing that really bothers me is the number of calls and texts that are phishing. I don’t know if the cell phone providers are selling peoples numbers, or if I have, inadvertently, provided my number to a company that sells this information.
I love the grounded reality of this channel!!! *If you are not in the financial market space right now, you are making a huge mistake. I understand that it could be due to ignorance, but if you want to make your money work for you..prevent inflation*
I feel sympathy and empathy for our country, low income earners are suffering to survive, and I appreciate Wayne. You've helped my family with your advice. imagine investing $10,000 and receiving $35,460 after 28 days of trading.
Honestly, our government has no idea how people are suffering these days. I feel sorry for disabled people who don't get the help they deserve. All thanks to Mr Michael Wayne, after investing $1,500 and receiving $6,700 in a few days
Can’t whine to me about car technology; my mechanic can’t even do much with my Prius. Have to go to another mechanic for anything more than oil changes and inspections. I used to change my own air filter. I agree I’m a bit scared of the technology - cuz if anything goes wrong everything goes wrong. But it’s the age we’re in. My father used to say don’t buy the stuff with all the bells and whistles cuz yu don’t use most of it in the long run. He was right. I have an instant pot and a air fryer oven, and for both I just use a few options I’ve memorized and figure out how to adapt to those options for whatever I need to do.
I love my Kindle. When my arthritis is really bad a physical book is too heavy and the pages are hard to turn. Also, I won't be able to read Meik Wiking's latest that I got at the library...the font is super tiny. So I'll have to get it on kindle through hoopla next month. Totally agree on pet peeves. I just deleted the Amazon ap, aps clog up my phone and I don't one for every store or restaurant! Bots & cookies drive me insane. I've ditched all my subscriptions and gone back to DVDs & CDs, and I go through the library for everything they offer. I will however pay to avoid commercials on youtube and Prime. They're loud and obnoxious and not stuff i would buy anyway. I drive a 2006 Camry, no bells no whistles. As for pet insurance, I don't think of that as a subscription since it's through my insurance company.
I haven’t one Alexa ball, but I canceled my Prime subscription and she stopped working. I unplugged her and haven’t tried to reset her up. However I do miss telling her to add things to my shopping list.
I don't use Ms A or Ms S. I love my apple watch for safety. I pay more for the cellular version. As a teacher (or really just an American) I want to be able to run from a bad guy without worrying about my purse or phone. (Car keys always in a pocket!) And as I hit 60 this month, if I had a bad fall I could easily call for help.
Love your channel from Missouri USA. Saw your face used on a Medicare Advantage plan income supplement commercial with someone else’s lips moving , fyi.
The absolute worst thing about cookies is if you actually buy something and then have to spend months receiving ads for that item. OK, if it's a loaf of bread, I get it. But if you buy say a new bathroom vanity, why would anyone think you would want to buy another one. I get it that they are using an algorithm but someone had to write that algorithm and really, they couldn't figure out that you wouldn't need another vanity within the next month.
It's really annoying to be pressured to buy more of something I just bought. If it was really smart, it would figure out what I might want next. Or just get better at helping me find what I do want. And I hope they enjoy all the frugality and anti-consumer sites I visit.
Fave: GPS. That's one tech where I say, "how did I live without this?" Least Fave: Chat Bots!!! omg, you hit the nail on the head. Those chat bots are both useless (most of the time) and annoyingly insulting.
I absolutely hate when I go to a website and a percentage discount pops up immediately before I’ve even had a chance to look at anything.
I love my Kindle. Our family owns hundreds of books, I feel like a home that doesn’t have/display books looks cold. But I love my Kindle, I listen to audiobooks from the library as I do housework and crochet. Also love reading in bed with a Kindle. Thanks.
My pet peeve is when I order a certain product on line, then the vendor starts sending multiple emails. One vender sends me 3 to 4 a day.
That’s super annoying, I hate that!
I agree! I unsubscribe to their email list as soon as I get the first email.
Ditto! And I hate ads. I too ignore the brands or products on purpose when I see them 😅😊 it’s so annoying. Also, I guess it helps my attempt at minimalist journey (more of essentialist, I’d say).
@@dianekraemer5989 I googled a place I wanted to visit in Las Vegas, now I get 2 or 3 additional suggestions daily.
Unsubscribe. If they keep sending you e mails, you can sue them.
I agree!! If they want my time, then they can pay for it.
Agree! When I get the “auto bot” on the phone, I just say “talk to a rep” over and over until they hook me up with a live person
Spam 0 if you're sick of talking
Thanks for the great information that is very relevant for me. I'm 64, retired and living hours away from my only living brother. I've been on my own most of my life and have had to do for myself. You have come up with some great advice that I haven't thought of.
My grandmother is 96 and whenever I drive her around she gets blown away by my phone’s GPS capabilities. She calls it “magic” ✨
@@karinhart489 Yes, I agree… and if it’s urgent, I sure hope we have a different way to communicate that than through a text!! 😳
I use Hue also.
You are not alone. I don’t have Alexa for the same reason.
The "Alexa call emergency contacts" part is very funny! 🤣
So in agreement with you on these especially the pet peeves!
Jen I found this so interesting as I am useless with technology, thankyou for explaining things so clearly. I am going to watch this video again . ❤
You might want to look into Kobo readers. They are not confined to stuff you buy from them. You can “side-load” free content to them as well.
You do know that Ms A continually collects every bit of information about you? You are the product.
True, but is there anything using internet that doesn't collect our information? We are indeed the product.
Worth it not to burn the muffins. 😂
“They” will be sooo bored tracking me. 😂😂😂

Agree on all of these except Ms. A - privacy concerns. Been a long time techie, but some things are just annoying.
Great info Jen. I must get some smart plugs. Didn’t really know what they were for. Keep up the good work! Thanks!
I agree with you on the cookies.
Very helpful podcast! Thank you for the wonderful suggestions!
Congrats on inching up to 100k! Love your channel. I need to get with it. I’ve never used Miss A or blink. Not sure where to start.
I was in that camp - not sure where to start. So I waited until a Miss A device was on sale, decided on a budget based on the sale items, and then bought an Echo for my home. Once I was comfortable with that, I bought another. Hope that info is helpful and might encourage you.

Thank you for watching!
Thanks so much Jen! I’m getting plug ins for my Christmas lights now! What a joy!!!!🎉🎈🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄😇
For many seniors on their own they remain independent this way.😊

Thanks so much for watching, and Merry Christmas to you too!
As someone on the cusp of 50 and very much into tech, I really appreciated this video, thank you!
I’m with on your lists, especially with the one where you can’t talk to a live person too easily. Sometimes they make it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to reach someone. Case in point: Xfinity. Trying to get to a live person is like pulling hairs! 😡
I agree. I have a location nearby so I go in when I want to chat with them.
Just keep pushing 0 it usually will get you a live person. The robots don't know what to do with it😂

You're almost a TECHIE! LOVE IT‼️
Like you, I LOVE "real books", but also love how I can carry as many as I want on my Kindle App.
Thanks for the video.
Surprised you didn't mention Siri since you are an Apple user. I use both Ms. A and Siri to assist with various tasks. Use of either or both really is very helpful.
You know what? I have never used Siri...not even once! lol!
@@silverandsolo Give her a try! More useful when using any of your apple apps and with other apps as well.

Smart plugs? No more light timers? Thank you Jen!!!! Love your tips and your humour!
Oh.... I haven't tried the smart plugs yet. What a great idea!
I love your subjects, you are so helpful. Xxx
I have a Eupy security camera I use to watch my puppy when I'm not home. I can talk to him over a speaker in the camera. My SmartPlugs work with all brands...
@silverandsolo That's awesome.I will order those.
Big Tech Fan myself😁
About Alexa, my SIL’s stepdad, Brian, had his Alexa say, “Good Evening, Brian, I’m not dead”. She’s always listening.
How have I lived without Alexa? I don't know, but I live just fine without it.
Hi Jen 👋
Another really good video. What apple watch are you currently using? Thanks
Technology is great most of the time.
YES! Map AP! I have no sense of direction!
Love your channel from Missouri USA. Saw your face used on a Medicare Advantage plan income supplement commercial with someone else’s lips moving , fyi.
Yes, several people have notified me...I have yet to see it. Stupid scammers! Please report it?
