In the last couple of years I have bought some bits and pieces that bring me great joy. First I blocked up my fireplace and installed a real flame electric fire. I can come home and press a button and by the time I've changed my clothes my lounge is toastie. No ashes or dust to clean up. The second item I bought was a Roomba type vacuum cleaner. Oh how I love the sound of it whirring around and doing a job that I hated. The most recent purchase I made was a decent coffee maker. Need I say more.....

Excellent list. I’ve adopted your list, and hadn’t realized it. Those items make single/silver life manageable and even more peaceful. I pay extra for good quality foods. Since I cook/share my creations… I won’t waste money or time on budget ingredients. Reliable car. Too old to be worried as I turn the key. Thanks Jen.

Had a son-in-law of a friend paint our metal gates over the years because he needed money. The gates looked OK. He moved away and this time, we had professional painters do the work --- the difference in how the finished product looks is amazing. Sometimes it is best to let the pros do the work.

Bought my winter coat in the fall of 2002. It's still in great condition and it's washable/dryable.
Since my husband passed away several months ago, my kids and I decided that I should sell the house and move closer to them. Was planning on selling my couch since I'll probably be in a smaller space. Decided to keep it as it's a quality piece. Bought in 2003 and still looks brand new.
Paying for the best you can afford is the cheapest route to go in the long run. Don't get me started on "fast fashion"!

I happily pay about $300 for professional round trip car service to the airport. It is only 30 miles from my home but in a major US city. Traveling is stressful enough without having to worry about parking, weather, traffic etc. A good driver will know all the alternate routes in case of traffic. He or she will also be up on time sucking airport glitches such as road work, construction, etc. On the return trip, my service keeps on top of my flight status and will be there at the arrivals area when I am.

I totally agree! I'm not fond of the super cheap, thin toilet paper - to me, you just end up using 2-3 times as much, so where is the savings? I have started using bamboo TP over the past few years, and it is good quality and saves trees as well.

Hey Jen, I will pay extra for the best garbage bags every time. I'm experimenting with grocery delivery. My goal is to spend less on my grocery budget. It's working so far. Having to pay for the service upfront and a tip has saved me over half my budget. Walking around the grocery store is more demanding, and it helps to keep my impulse shopping in check.

I try to not cheap out on certain items like mattress, sheets, shoes and coats. But, I cannot pay top dollar either. So, I compromise and get the best quality I can for the money I have to spend even if it means paying a few dollars more than I am confortable with. Sometimes it takes me a while to find these item with this criteria and works for me. But, it's worth the extra money and time. I haven't regretted a purchase I made or service I used for decades. I highly recommend it. As always, great chat Jenn. See ya next week. 🙂🙋 --Paula in Ohio USA

Yes to all of those and I would add good quality cookware. There's nothing worse than cooking with flimsy cheap pots and pans, plus the non-stick coating can be dangerous over time and use. I still use Revere stainless steel cookware that my mother received as a wedding gift in 1950. 70+ years of use...now that is quality worth paying for.

I bought an eight-inch Japanese chef's knife in 1973 for a little over $20, fifty-one years later I'm still using it, so a good knife will last a lifetime. My second favorite knife is a bread knife my mother purchased in the early 1960s, that one amazes me because it has never been sharpened and still cuts bread perfectly.

Testing revealed recently that I need hearing aids. My EENT provider dispenses them, and I checked out other options. Yes, there are cheaper options - one that costs about half of what I paid. In the end I went with my EENT provider. Warranty on the hearing aids, regular visits with the audiologist, and my Dr. is at the same practice. Best and latest technology available. Expensive and well worth it. Like a good mattress, being able to hear properly affects overall health. Thank you for your videos!

I make cheap mistakes all the time. Meh. 😩 But I do know better! One thing I never compromised on was cat care for my Maggie. After exhausting friends to stay with her, I found an elderly acquaintance who was thrilled to live in my place and explore my Netflix every time I went away. It was perfect. My cat got to stay home and he got a vacation space. I voluntarily paid him buckets, and stocked the kitchen with his favorites to entice him to stay, but it was worth every cent! My Maggie passed but I’d do the same with any future pet. 💞

I rescue old sewing machines that people are throwing out. I find them online or at the curb. The pre-1970s all-metal mechanical machines are worth fixing. I clean and oil them. I replace the bobbin or needle as needed. I'll play with the tension if necessary. That is usually all that is needed. Then I find a good home for it and give it away for free. It is a hobby of mine. You also can find these old machines at thrift stores for $20-40. My local sewing store charges $150 to service them. It is worth it if the timing or tension are messed up. After that, keep it clean of lint after each sewing session and once a year put a drop of sewing machine oil on the moving parts. I grew up using a Kenmore 158. It is a bulletproof machine that will last for generations. I think it was made by Janome. My sister has it. I have a Singer 403 and love it. Another bulletproof machine. Replacement parts and accessories are easy to find online.

My splurges are definitely for my dogs. I am 72 and disabled, so rather than have a back yard that is disgusting with their dog waste, I pay a company to come over and pick up dog poo twice a month. I know some people think it is ridiculous, but I am unable to do it myself and the back yard is small, so over time it would become a health hazard. I also want them to eat human grade fresh food, and I can't cook it myself, so I pay to have gently cooked, human grade food delivered every month. Fortunately my dogs are small, so it isn't exorbitantly expensive.

Just a note about down filling. There is a very great deal of animal abuse in the trade in down. Check out if your down is ethically sourced, without unnecessary cruelty to geese and other birds. I buy down-filled vests from Lands End (it’s a U.S. company, so add for import duty), because they state that their down is ethically sourced. I don’t think the same can be said for Canada Goose products.

Hi Jen. I so agree on buying the name brand garbage bags. So worth it, as well as the best quality outerwear. I've had one of my North Face coats for at least 7 years, and it still looks brand new.
I still have knives and silverware from my mom, and she's been gone for 30 years. Plus her good gravy boat and ladle. In mint perfect condition. My grandson is nearly 3, and he only gets the best sneakers. Though he'll grow out of them, they help keep his balance, fit his foot correctly, and have a wonderful skid free sole.
The same for my workout sneakers.
I'm in a lovely townhome, in a wonderful neighborhood. The taxes are much higher than other neighborhoods, but it's quiet, hopefully safe (the police department is located within the development).
I'm with you. I'd never put my 3 cats in a kettle. I'd hire someone to stay here. Seems like when pets go to a kennel, they get sick.
    Thanks, Jen. Always good advice!❤

I would also add to the list, paying for the best seats available at any kind of show you want to see. I put a doggy in a kennel once 30 years ago and when I collected him he was shaking in the corner. He was never the same after that - for the next 10 years of his life he suffered terrible anxiety and sadness. He was only there for 2 days. Never again! Poor Hugboots

Buying good quality the first time when it comes to bits that help me live with my autism, also just buying them in the first place 😂. Earplugs, noise cancelling headphones, etc etc. Without them I'd be a wreck of a human being, so getting ones that are both comfortable and long lasting is essential

I think if you do your research, spend your hard-earned money on very good quality items that you use every day, you'll do just fine. I try to remember what my parents spend their hard earned money on. Good tires, oil changes 2x a year. Car repairs at a very reputable place. Also my Mom had an appliance insurance plan for every appliance in our house. She would pay towards it monthly or yearly, and if anything was unfixable, it was replaced for free. She loved it and told many people about it.

Another service that I pay a lot for is a haircut. A couple of years ago when my income dropped, I tried a couple of the budget haircut chain places. I thought- how hard can it be? I thought surely they are trained to do basic layered bobs. Well, all the haircuts were terrible. So I went to a regular full service beauty salon and found a stylist that does decent haircuts, but it's not cheap. Related to that subject, when I had my hair professionally colored, I did buy the expensive salon shampoo to preserve the quality of the color as long as possible. Since I "went gray" I just buy non-salon shampoo that's sulfate and cruety-free for much less.

I'm a quilter, and i won't buy cheap fabric. (Walmart) the cheap fabrics are treated with something to make it feel good and heavy, but washes away to reveal thin, flimsy fabric.
Also, i bought a good set of knives from a restaurant supply store, carbon steel, and they're easier to sharpen and the edge lasts longer than stainless steel knives.

Good knives for a reasonable cost - MERCER. Very good steel that is well heat treated, generally good ergonomics, good warranty. Their bread knife for around $18 is the best I have ever used; SUPER sharp and very ergonomic. Zips through crusty bread / bagels / whatever like a light saber. I have very good German and Swedish knives and these MERCER are fully their equal in all ways I measure. BTW, invest in and learn to use a good sharpening steel and strop.

Car wash!! Last year I spent money on a special foam to spray on my car, along with the wipes, and special towels and a can of some kind of wax coating to put on after -- whatever. You get what I'm talking about. Jump to today and I still have not used any of those things -- they are sitting on my shelf in my garage. I just don't have the time, nor the energy to go out and wash/clean my car. I'm past 60 and why risk hurting my back, knees, etc. Instead, I have taken my car to the car wash and for 20 bucks I can get something called "The Works" -- and that includes everything. The foam, the buffing, the wax -- the works! And I don't have to lift a finger and my car looks shiny and new. They even have an unlimited car wash club where you pay one price and get as many washes you want per month/year. Not sure if I'll do that, but still -- way better than doing it myself. That is a splurge that is so worth it!

I agree with you about the pet sitter! I paid the dog trainer good $ to stay at my place because I didn't trust anyone else. Now she found me a sitter close by that saves me money and likes to hang out here because she doesn't have a television. I make my dogs food instead of feeding them dog food and they are in great health.

I am willing to pay for gold dental restorations which I have done at the Dental School, for a lot less than going to a private dentist. They are expensive, but have lasted many years with only a few needing to be replaced due to wear or my heavy bite.
' Necessity is the mother of invention". If I want to splurge, I occasionally treat myself to a buffet, or a trip to the Beauty School for a new hair-do, but only a couple of times a year. Once a year I enjoy a Whale Watching trip with my family, we also enjoy the on board meal. The rest of the year, I take picnics and go on Washighton State Ferries to enjoy Days Out.

I love those Costco garbage bags, you’re right as a single person. I only take my garbage out once a week so that box lasts me four years. I am finally just running out and bought a new box. I might share it with a friend because four years Is ridiculous to be storing that giant thing. I haven’t watched your whole video yet so I don’t know if you mentioned paper towels, but I only buy Bounty. I’ve bought other brands. You can’t even tear them off the roll without them ripping in some odd direction, drives me crazy. Where I live I don’t need good outerwear but that’s probably a good idea for people who live where it’s cold. It seldom even makes it down to freezing where I live and that’s in the middle of the night and there’s no snow so I’m usually just good with a hoodie and an occasional rain jacket.

I also believe in spending money on your hobbies-creative outlets are so important!
