I hope I have inspired you to either begin gardening or continue your garden life. If you are just getting started, here is a video that may be helpful. ua-cam.com/video/MBunnyV6qVw/v-deo.htmlsi=OilNKqd-f04yzWhe

I am 67, a newly retired nurse in England( though I say I’m on a gap year haha) . I started my UA-cam channel 8 months ago, and it’s very tiny. But I started it, yes , daring to hope to earn money, but primarily , as a legacy my grandaughter . So why do I get soooo despondent when I get hardly any views, and elated when I get a thumbs up or lots of views ? … because I’m secretly hopeful it will take off and that may validate what I’m doing to others. Ridiculous!!!!.
What I do, I have always loved doing, but never had much time for it when I was at work, because my role involved constantly updating . I’m a nurse practitioner ( yes still registered) , and I so miss the actual caring aspect that seems devoid in health practice now .
Anyway I digress . I just subscribed to your channel. Because I do like my garden and I’m thinking I might like to learn about organic gardening from a fellow retiree . So onward and upward we go x

Thank you! I checked out your video about making a dress shorter with a crocheted accent on the bottom. Very clever! I hope you do well. I'm no expert by any means but I did fast forward a bit through the first part so that shows me that editing can be a help. When I edit, I tell myself to be ruthless. I try to not share more than what is absolutely necessary. It took me many videos to learn that and I'm still learning to "stay on topic". Check other crochet videos like MJs off the Hook and see how she will edit her work yet still remain informative. I LOVED your updated dress.

I'm an artist who has been working hard on my UA-cam channel for several years now. Still not monetized, but getting close! For me, I think a big reason is that I make videos about a few different subjects that I'm passionate about, such as art, travel, nature, and daily mundane things. I think if I was to choose ONE thing, it would grow at a faster rate, but then I wouldn't be making what truly makes my soul sing.
I think people get too caught up with numbers and "making it" that they forget the reason why they really started it. Just follow your heart and do the things that bring joy and meaning into your life. That should be the main point. ❤️

Hey, just wanted you to know that the algorithm sent me your video. ( I do love gardening, and I'm excited to discover your channel, but these algorithms are so fascinating to me! You just popped up following a video I was watching about all the drones and UFO stuff, so go figure!) I started my own channel back in 2007 because, at the time, that was the only way to share a large video. Now, I'm sharing my own passion, and using my channel to do that, but it's been interesting to see how monetization keeps upping the ante: Back in the day, 1,000 views would get you a penny. Thank you for your honesty. I think we're all looking for "passive income" by doing what we love. Thank you for your insights!

  • @kyrithevans7943
    @kyrithevans7943 2 місяці тому +9

Your realism and honesty are so refreshing. It gets super tiresome to see clickbaity videos saying "This strategy helped me make $13,000 a month!" and then they have no specifics about what they actually did other than "make stuff" and "promote your stuff." I don't know if they're straight up lying about their income, if they just got incredibly lucky, or if they're working their butt off and then downplaying how hard it was.
I like gardening, but live in a totally different climate from you. I am in a really cold part of upstate NY, so my biggest challenge is always finding cold-hardy plants, or finding fast-growing vegetables that I will be able to harvest in a short growing season. I already had a frost that killed most of my veggies except the Swiss chard.

I've been on UA-cam for 9 years. The last few years I've uploaded very hit and miss. At just barely over 3K subs I've never made more than a couple hundred dollars "a year" when I was at my busiest. That's not enough to pay for one of my adventures or time I put into videos. It's sure not that beginners think! You're exactly right in the fact, you better be doing it because you're enjoying sharing what you do. The contact and comments from loyal subscribers really are what make the effort worth it. Don't compare yourself to others because it can be depressing. I've never seen your channel before and it popped up in suggested videos this morning. I love the honestly and wish you the best of luck in all you do. BUT, just do you.

Please don't give up on your channel! Sadly, the way the world is going, people could be flocking to your channel as the supply chain implodes and the food gets scarce. I know that sounds completely negative and I'm sorry, but we never know what the future holds.
One thing that I just learned that most people overlook is this: Go into your YT Studio on a desktop, click on your settings and find the tab where you list your keywords. Put the keywords in there that reflect your channel. It makes a big impact to have that filled out. Hope that helps and good luck!😊

I'm not into gardening, but I really resonate with what you mentioned about gurus everywhere. In 2021, I decided to pivot from dropshipping to coaching. After spending over $100k on mentorships, I didn’t see any return. The topics were always the same, and just when I thought I understood, I’d need to upgrade to the next course. Some people, probably smarter than most of us, knew the game and made boatloads of money by giving 'value'-which felt incomplete until you signed up for their expensive course, only to discover that one missing piece from their free challenge/course. Then, another upgrade would be offered to truly 'make it' and achieve success. It just never ends. I can’t imagine conning people like that. I honestly don’t know how they sleep at night, claiming to provide value. That's why I started my UA-cam channel to share the courses I’ve created for free, hoping people will actually benefit from them. For a while, I thought I was just complaining, but your video proves I was right all along in my observations. ☺

Simple addition to your content: Visit other gardens, review them, about what they do and dont do right, what you like and dont like about them. Reviewing other gardens allows co-branding with gardening products, such as fertilizers and gardening equipment and tools. Even if shorts of other gardens are uploaded, it will feed into your own. Get the eyes from the shorts, it will casscade. Maintain full "speed."

I've had a channel for about 7 years, I am just shy of 10K subscribers...i'm also an organic gardener and do all my vids myself (film/edit/post/answer questions). I have close to 500 vids, i put out 2 or 3 a week, luckily I have several 'Evergreen" video's (which means they are appropriate to watch anytime per year). During the gardening season I make enough to make it worth some time (a few hundred dollars) most of the time it's around $100 a month. I do my channel so people can learn to feed themselves, and save their harvests. Personally I think I need to drop the term "prepper' from my name so more people watch my channel...I think it holds some folks back because they think i'm crazy.

God has been providing an income, but Facebook and UA-cam have been encouraging me to make more videos. I realized that their interest is only on making money off of my labors. They want a channel (or a profile on FB) to succeed so that they can make money selling advertising. I’m not a content creator, I actually make flame painted copper art pieces by hand. So really, you. Puked make a cup of tea, set on the pitch and talk about books. 😄
I talk about books but I think I’m going to write on Substack instead. It’s where readers hang out.

There are a few others peppered about. Usually from us older crowd. Another 2 YT'ers I follow have given reality checks on Etsy as well as YT. The 'market' for eyes/attention is extremely crowded. I think that's why some focus on their FB channels as they are more localised/territory forming. If you can post your media on multiple channels without too much effort, at least these options are covered. It sure is not as easy as the course promotors suggest it is.

I did take a year or two off though between now and then, but still, it has indeed been a long journey! Some videos have finally started getting more of a push by UA-cam so that's good 😀
I appreciate my subscribers all the more. It has been nice having a small community where you know people by name and have the time to properly converse with everyone 😊 I won't take it for granted if my channel ever does take flight. I know how much work went into finally getting it there. That's much more rewarding than overnight success 🙂

Thanks for the candid report of your experience with a small youtube channel. I've thought about it but still haven't come up with an idea that would be compelling. That's a lot of work to get to $2,100... My only other comment (and apologies, as I'm a tree nerd): remove some of that mulch piled up around the base of that lovely tree behind your right shoulder so the root flare is fully exposed. If you find adventitious roots growing into that heap, clip down to the soil with sterilized pruners...

I was younger once! My Mamaw grew gardens every year. I worked in them with her and fed the toads and birds and chased lizards and I loved everything about it. Moving the water through the ditches and digging and pulling weeds and fixing the mower with my Papaw. She harvested so much tasty food and canned fruit and pickles and baked pies. Her flowers were amazing and she would win ribbons in the fair every year. Now I just feel really fortunate for those days.

Great advice. I'm 78. Started my channel 18 months ago. I was a Man on a Mission. Passionate. No aim of earning money. Sò far, 58 episodes. Got monetized 1 year ago. 1,500 subscribers. Till now, not a cent in coz I haven't passed the minimum of 100 USD for bank transfer. Have now reached the stage of doing more of the same. As such, have lost my passion.
Conclusion; I enjoyed it while it lasted. Learned new skills. Not disappointed by no income as that was never the aim. Now have a documented legacy for my kids and grand kids to see who I am and who I was. For other wanabee money minded You Tubers, forget about it. Don't waste your time. For every hour spent here, that's one hour you could have used to make real money.

Shorten your descriptions and bulletin pint the stuff you want to stick out- like affiliate links

My advice is make this channel about "you". I don't garden and I'm 43, but UA-cam recommended you on my homepage, because you come across as relatable, and your lifestyle and "story" is interesting. Post shorter videos if you can, 10 minutes, etc. It doesn't have to be long videos. And yes, some videos will do better than other. This is the way it is. Bottom line, do what you love. You can also make money from creating a membership with a private course where you teach others smt about garding etc.

UA-cam needs More decent people making good content, you've done well in a short time, I've been doing it for 14 year's, there's no magic to make you get a million subscribers, you just need to be likable and interesting, remember you're competing against 50 million other channels.

I'm guessing the entertainment industry and media must get pretty ticked off with like 50 million channels taking away from them viewership of their products. I like the idea that they don't control everything a person sees but your common man can gain a following.

If you like to travel, travel to other organic gardens, vegetable and floral, film the experience. There's still so much you can do, if you want to grow your channel. You are such a lovely lady. I can imagine this one honest video helped so many and will get many views. Good luck to you. I was looking for something extra to do in retirement, but after your honesty, this is definitely not it😊
You mentioned well being. Mental health has a huge focus now, and as a gardener myself, except food, shady yard here, getting out in nature, is cathartic.
