Yes, I always remind people to avoid buy dry cleaning clothes. Not good for the environment and it cost both time and money to get it cleaned. Buy clothes that are of natural fibre and that you can wash at home in 60C so bad bacteria dies. Hang out to dry if you can.

No makeup, no hair coloring, no manicures (do my own), shop at Aldi’s, drive only when necessary, carry a reusable water bottle, do most of my own cooking (batch cook and freeze), hang my clothes out, no TV, use free library streaming platforms and DVD and book checkouts, shop at thrift stores, never bought a new car, use a credit union (no fees), never put my heat up higher than 62 (wear layers and use an electric mattress pad), rarely order beverages of any kind when I go out, split meals when I eat out whenever possible or box half to take home for second meal, monitor water and electricity usage, always pay bills so I never get charged interest, always on the lookout for free activities or entertainment, don’t buy the latest phones or computers or the trendy ones, have a very inexpensive cell phone plan, barter pet care for vacation time in my home, etc. I have been doing this ALL my life because I don’t like to waste money if I don’t have to.

I also do as towanda above suggests. My cell phone is a Trac phone, so free, and I pay less than $10.00 a month for an Ooma phone which runs off the Internet. Being a life long mindful and frugal Prepper, I shop at home for most groceries, I also have a garden to grow fresh salads, and have yet to assemble a DIY hydroponic system that can be used outside or in the garage using Grow Lights. This method produces massive harvests.. Manure comes from my beloved Rescue Rabbits, who produce it 24/7. 'Tea' for the hydroponic system could also be made from rabbit manure. Prepping is the very best way to mitigate inflation and shortages. I also prepped for all aspects of daily living. I am now working on doing a Swedish Death Clean/purge, so as not to leave a pile for my daughter to deal with after I 'pop my clogs.'. I am going to make a list of valuable items for her, so she won't just toss the lot.
Instead of taking holidays, I enjoy Days Out once or twice a month, usually with family, I always take picnics for us. I also have a modest vintage RV for overnight trips. Items other than food are bought used, from small local Thrift Stores which support charities I am passionate about. They are far less expensive than the big 'chain' kind. Tell that to the Canadians who love to hop over the border to shop!
There are many free concerts, fairs and festivals, and the museum has a Free Day once a month, as well as hosts special interest groups for Birding, Travel and other topics, all free, but they request a $5.00 donation. I also play the piano, and enjoy Art and Photography. And, State Parks also have Free Days occasionally. I used to take a couple of classes at my local Senior Center, but for a number of reasons, decided it was 'not my cup of tea.' Our local Maritime Museum membership interests me, they also have events throughout the year.
I go to the my local Beauty School for occasional hair cuts an have foils done about twice a year. Toiletries and hygiene items come from Thrift Stores and saves a fortune. I'm a patient at the Dental School in Seattle to save 30-40% on cost over what a local private dentist would charge. As I just had a three unit bridge, that was likely several thousand dollars. The difference between what Medicare pays for medical care, and what my physicians charge is picked up by assistance offered by the hospital for anyone earning less than $40,000.00 a year. I had Cancer almost three years ago, so you may understand how helpful that was. I a drive an older Toyota bought used in pristine condition with very low mileage, hopefully with TLC it will last the rest of my days. Insurance is $50.00 a month, because I have high deductibles. Though I prepared financially for retirement, catastrophic life events cannot always be predicted. I believe that tithing brings abundance, and is a part of my budget. Speaking of budgeting, my bill payments are set up automatically to pay on the 3rd of each month. I use Care Credit, to pay for my dental bill which is Interest Free, so long as paid on time.
My frugality becomes a tad questionable, considering the vet bills paid over the years. An At Risk dog from a High Kill Shelter in LA is on her way to WA in a few days. Due to being a Senior, adopting a Senior Dog, I only had to pay for her transportation, $200.00, and includes her vaccinations, microchip and ID tag. To be honest, I need another dog, like a hole in my head, but it is heart- breaking enormous numbers of animals are being euthanized after Covid, shelters are literally at double capacity due to owner surrender.
An electric bike, found online with 16miles on it, $1100.00, someone had returned it to the manufacturer so they sold it at $400.00 less than normal. It is fun to ride, great exercise and provides alternative transportation, thus saving petrol. Like you, gardening and occasional dog walking is my only exercise other than cycling, though I also have a stationary bike, resistance bands and free weights all bought used for a total of less than $50.00.
I cannot think of other 'corners to cut' other than selling items on Craig's List and selling the remainder in a Garage Sale. Other than, I need to fast again, to lose more weight.

Even though I have an eight-figure net worth (and zero debt), I enjoy living semi-frugally. My only real treats are road trips and dinner/lunch at nicer restaurants with friends. I'm 67 and never colored my hair, which is now completely gray. I get my hair cut at Great Clips. I've never had a professional manicure. I've never had food delivered. I don't purchase bottled water. I go to Starbucks six times a year tops. I've never had a gym/club membership. My daily-driver is a 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser. Spending money on stuff doesn't do it for me. Hiking with my beloved dog, reading a good book, sipping hot cocoa in front of a crackling fire while watching snow fall outside, sharing a meal and conversation with friends, supporting worthy organizations with monetary gifts: these are the things that bring me joy.

Will not give up my personal trainer. At age 76 my strength and balance are noticeably diminishing. I hike a lot but find it's not enough. As we age resistance training becomes more and more important. I see the money I spend on my trainer as an investment in my future quality of life.

    • @ritadyer9295

I wear my makeup for me. When I pass by a mirror I like to look good. I’ve been thru several depressing and trying years with losing several close family members, two in car accidents (my nephew who was like my son and my stepdad who raised me) then my mom passed after some surgery, my brother and grandpa and I haven’t had time to grieve properly and had to deal with my wicked stepsister from 2018 to 2021. Anyway, I’m rid of her. But I had let myself go and I’ve aged so much these last few years! I still have adopted grandkids at home (11 and 13). (I will be 65 next month) I homeschool the kids. We don’t have any sitters or back up. Last year I had some sickness and so a few months ago I decided I was going to find “me” again and try to look the best I can at my age and get dressed nicely every day. It makes me feel so much better! I’m finally feeling like me again after 8 years! But I understand not everyone feels the same way about who you are looking good for.
I like watching the golden girls because now I am them and they always look so nice! That’s my goal. For me. For my husband and kids.

Both mascara and lip gloss can go bad. You should be able to smell if your lip gloss has gone off. Most skincare and cosmetics have a jar symbol with a number that indicates how long it is safe to use after opening, not sure if mascara is the same but you do not want to get an eye infection from bad mascara. Good news though, Boots is said to be a good brand of skin care.

My neighbour is horrified by the thought of wearing shoes bought at Thrift Stores, said she would never risk foot fungus. Obviously, she was totally unaware one can easily find brand new shoes there. I challenged her to tell me where my shoes came from. If concerned one can easily disinfect those that are used, some can even be tossed in the washing machine. I have quite a selection, I only paid $5.00 a pair for, though prices are far higher now, even at Thrift Stores. All my shoes are high end brands in almost perfect condition, that I have had for years, same goes for handbags and my collection of silk scarves.

I started noticing my gray at the 'ripe' old age of 19 years old. Decided I would go gray gracefully... I am 65 and wish it would hurry up and turn white. I have plenty of gray around my temples, but not much anywhere else. Go figure! In my mid 40s, my aunt asked when I was going to start dying my hair because I called her 'Aunt Sharon', and it made her look old. Of course, she was also about 25 years older than I was... I just told her that it wasn't going to happen. I do admit to using colored hair glue upon occasion, just to have a little fun! My aunt still gets hopeful when she sees it...

If your makeup is unused and still sealed, it will last for years, butmeverytime you use it, or even open it up to the air, youmare potentially letting bacteria, mold, or mildew in which could be very dangerous, especially anything used in the eye area. Some types of breakouts can also be caused by old used makeup. If it has been opened, even if only used once, you should throw it away after 6-12 months. Six months for anything used around your eyes, and up,tom12 months for powder or powdered blush if you haven't been breaking out after use. I have used older lipstick without problems when I was young, but I hardly use makeup anymore, so I throw everything out after a year anymore.

Your list is my list, I only add that because I live in the desert southwest, I can manage winter without turning on the heat, I bought an electric lap blanket that I use if I get chilled. I do buy bottled water because in the desert water is life and I take it with me everywhere because you never know if your vehicle may quit on you and it's 117°F outside. I do buy brand name coffee rather than generic, but I brew it at home in a drip coffee maker (I have never had a Starbucks). I only eat at home because fast food and restaurants are expensive. My brother-in-law gifted me with a cell phone and pays for the service because he said I needed to have one in case of emergencies on the road. I do pay for AAA in case my vehicle breaks down it gives me peace of mind. I belong to a credit union no service fees to use my own money. At 75 I pinch every penny until it screams -- twice. :)

After my husband passed away, I sold our TV. Talk about a money savings! There are so many things to watch on the computer I didn't even miss it. There are also library books to read and sweaters to knit. I bought a water filter at Walmart and use that all of the time. Don't even remember the last time I had bottled water. Growing an herb garden and then either freezing or drying them gives me an abundance of herbs for tea anytime I want a cup. I've also started growing some veggies so that's a huge savings in my grocery bill. Plus, it fresh and I know it hasn't been sprayed with chemicals. My debit account in my bank pays over 3% interest up to $15K, as long as you use the debit card 12 times/month. I can find a lot of things at our Dollar Tree stores. Almost everything is $1.25. Shampoo, etc.

I get them all online through my local library for free! Makeup is just about gone. Do replace any eye makeup due to bacteria concerns. If and when I buy cosmetics, I buy at local dollar store which often carries name brands at discount prices. I do pour over coffee instead of pods. Much cheaper and tastes exactly the same. So many pour over products. Mine is a simple plastic funnel that fits on mug and you just place filter inside and pour hot water over coffee grounds. Works great and I take it on trips as well! Another tip is use credit cards occasionally and always, always pay off balance each month. If you can't do that, you are spending too much. I have never not done this. Takes a lot of budgeting and willpower. Love your channel. Would love to visit BC someday...😊

My neighbor and I go out to lunch once a week. We have the kitchen split an order. At our age, I’m 78, he is 89, we don’t eat as much, halves the price. We also share groceries. Very often the packages are too big for one person and produce used to go bad before it was all used up. Now no more waste. I use most of your tips but my water tastes funny, so I do use bottle water. I do treat myself. I get manicures and pedicures, no color and they are very inexpensive. ($12 and $25 respectively plus tips). I also have my eyebrows threaded. If I take off my glasses to do them, I can’t see to do them!

Good morning, Jen. I'm with you on getting rid of cable. I was paying nearly $300 a month, for 2 TVs. Now, I stream through UA-cam, and I have Netflix through Prime. My bill is less than half of what I was paying.
I no longer have a gym membership. I either walk, or there are fabulous workout programs on UA-cam. I dye my hair myself, and most of the time, I cut my own hair. I've not used any food delivery service. I do have a Walmart + membership, so everything gets delivered free. And if I don't make it to the grocery store, I know that Walmart will bring it to me. Yes, I do tip.
Our tap water isn't great, so we do use a water filter. And my husband insists on bottle water for himself. I make my own coffee or tea. No more Starbucks for me.
When my girls were younger, I always made bread with a bread maker.
Well, I'm a sucker for makeup and skincare. Mascara should be changed every 3 months. It grows bacteria quickly. Lip products, no more than a year, maybe 2. I was a child of the 60s and 70s, and baked outside with baby oil. Now, I wear sunscreen on my face, 365 days a year. I've had a few precancerous spots removed, so when I'm outside, it's sunscreen, sunglasses, and perhaps a hat.
Another enjoyable video. Thanks, Jen. Have a great day. 😊❤

Yikes, I went to Great Clips and asked for an undercut, and they almost shaved my neck, all I wanted was it cut, so that it would naturally curve under. Apparently, younger hair dressers seem to think that under cutting means clipping it short as far as above the ears. I was horrified! Went to a different Great Clips, again with a photo of what I wanted, and they did the same thing. Now, I go to the Beauty College, and the instructors always cut my hair and do a great job. Not sure what is so difficult about looking at a photo and cutting the hair to look similar.

Clearance and thrifted clothes, yard sale and thrifted furniture, I pay for everything with a charge card, that pays me 3 dollars for every 100 I spend, I pay charge card bill in total every month, making anywhere from 10 to 15 dollars a month depending on my expenses, I have no mortgage, and I purchased my favorite pumpkin spice(spice blend), for lattes, and the individual spices for masala chai,(cinnamon, ginger, cloves, cardamom, and allspice)my favorite drink! The plants you grow from the seeds of hybrids will probably be useless - spindly flowers and little fruit. There are sources for seeds that breed true, but I don't know much about them. Be sure to get seeds that you know (from talking to neighbors) will thrive in your area.

The only thing I decided to "waste" money on again is my hair! I used to cut my own hair since before covid, because I didn't see the point of seeing a hairdresser if all I had to do was to get rid of the split ends. But lately I got tired of caring for my long hair, how long it takes to wash and dry and having to style it everyday. So I cut it very short. It's awesome because it takes 5 minutes to wash and 2 to dry, no need to tie it up, and on top of that I feel it suits me much better than long hair. The con is I have to get it touched up every month or so otherwise it looks unkempt and my job doesn't allow it. But for me it's worth it. One thing I know I won't do in the future is hide greying hair! Men don't so I don't see why I should.

For the outside of my house. $45 and I have free tv. I get 12-18 channels, depending on weather. I could get many more, but I’d need a higher pole. It’s plenty, all major networks for news (if need be) and several PBS stations, many movie channels with black n white, old sitcoms etc.
Recently, we’ve experienced outages with internet, phone, tv here for a day. Made me wonder what was going on, turned on TV,
Nothing on news. So I didn’t worry about it.

I gave up cable and only have internet to the house for $29. I have overseas streaming services which cost me around $60 per year. Hunt around for them. They are usually under educational websites to learn different languages. I don't have commercials, get show time and stars, and all the TV series I can watch in a lifetime. I can binge-watch, and if I go camping or traveling, I can download episodes to my laptop and take them with me. But I don't get local news or sports channels, so I have to get my news online.

Lots of useful, good ideas. I do not use any cable channels. I watch free movies on UA-cam. I cook from scratch and make my own bread and right now I’m canning blackberries and soon will be canning applesauce from our own fruit trees. I also have chickens who give me wonderful eggs every day. Have a freezer full of beef raised here on our little farm. Although I am 77, I keep busy and plan on raising some rabbits soon . Used to raise them back in the 70’s and love them.

I live out in the country in Ontario, and although we do have local small combo gas/grocery type stores out here, whatever you need costs way more due to convenience of not having to drive to town for supplies. One thing I did to really save money is buy powder milk. I don't use it for everything, after all I can freeze regular milk for my coffee, etc., but powder milk not only saves money but can be used for anything that requires milk in a recipe, such as mashed potatoes. They taste just as good as using real milk and you don't notice the difference. It really helps to stretch the grocery bill, and also have it on hand when you run out of regular milk. ~ I am 68 going on hoping to be debt free by 70 in a home business, and I truly enjoyed your video. I'm going to start implementing several of your suggestions, so Thank You for sharing your ideas!!

Hi Jen - love your channel and your insightful videos. It must be lovely living on Vancouver Island - I have dear friends there and absolutely love visiting. I abandoned the hair dye about 10 years ago. It’s so liberating. I do treat myself to a high quality purple shampoo which keeps my colour “crystal” and eliminates any brassiness. The other thing I indulge in is facial sunscreen. I wear it 7 days/week - 365 days a year. All your other insights really resonate with me. Keep up the great work.

My shampoo is baking soda...white vinegar rinse. Conditioner a crazy small amount of real shea butter, dont rinse it out.
Lotion face cream, anti age potion...coconut oil or real shea butter... yep a bit more pricey at the start, but in the long run very cost friendly.

I take a similar approach to expenses, and everything is up for evaluation. I don’t use paper napkins or paper towels (cloth and laundering instead). Dont have a coffee habit. At 73, I still have the hair color I had at birth; I take good care of my skin but have never worn makeup; never suckered into cable tv; read library books, and watch free movies, and documentaries, work puzzles and word games in three languages; only eat fresh organic plant foods since my teen years; shop (only and rarely) consignment and vintage clothes and household furnishings; shop only at the Co-op; and I tithe my twee income despite being a non-believer; drink 3 cases of glass-bottled San Pellegrino (my only beverage) a month; would never drink even filtered tap water. I am gregarious but prefer solitude (I have leukemia); and live in gratitude and with optimism. And I think many, many others live likewise. I live in Florida, so I buy a case of bottled water every spring when hurricane season begins. Then starting in November, I drink it. It takes a while, because I forget to grab it since I always carry a water cup wherever I go. I drink water from my fridge filter. I’ve never had cable in my life (I’m 64) and rarely watch even streaming services, so I cancelled my Netflix six or seven years ago. I quit wearing makeup, except for sometimes lipstick if I look a little dead 😂. I get my hair cut every six weeks, but quit having it colored in 2010 and quit coloring it myself a year later. I do have a pod coffee machine, and I’m experimenting with making my own capsules since there isn’t a reusable one for my particular machine. So I just have aluminum foil covers for the existing capsules. Still working on getting the right amount of coffee in there. I bake bread every couple of weeks and since my recipe makes two loaves, I either freeze the second one or give it away. Gave one away yesterday and I still have three loaves in the freezer in addition to the one I’m using. My biggest expense is my pets. I will probably not adopt any more after they cross the Rainbow Bridge.

Costco rotisserie chicken is a great deal. They weigh about 1.3 kg after being cooked, and cost $7.99 in Alberta. We get several meals from each bird. As far as getting my haircut, I’m 75 years old and I wear my hair very short and everyone seems to like it. They also tell me that they like my white silver gray hair. I think it’s sad that you don’t even want to go to the bank because you would have to talk to a teller. I definitely love my on line banking just because it is so convenient. I will try a generic product once, and if I like it I will get it again. I’m not just going to use something just because it is cheaper. I only use Jiff peanut butter. Smuckers strawberry jelly, Heinz, ketchup, and bushes beans. These are a few things that I don’t change I go along with most of what you said I do think that if the bar needs painted we should paint it. I don’t use a lot of make up but I do like some. I probably will never get to meet, but I would like to.I think you are a very intelligent woman, and I am not. I stopped buying canned soup during the pandemic. I realized one day that I still felt hungry after eating one of these products at lunch. I looked at the list of bad ingredients and just said no more. Now, I make my own broth. I use half a chicken, fresh veggies or beef bones. I even formed a relationship with a local farm for the beef bones, and they're actually cheaper than getting the bones at my local supermarket. Every once in a while, I'll get a call from the farm to come and pick up some free extras! I keep the broth frozen, and thaw them when I want to make soup. It's a little more work, but since I'm now retired I enjoy the process and actually have nutritious, filling and delicious soup whenever I want it.
