    Number 1 of a 3 part series on bowl lathering for wet shaving. This is how I bowl lather by putting a hard soap into the bottom of the bowl and then create the lather.

    Great lather. I don’t get the comments that something taking 2 minutes takes too long. These same people can spend hours surfing in social media or watching Netflix. Since I started wet shaving I have found a new ”me" moment and I really look forward to my shaves. I put some relaxing music on, take my time, and enjoy an excellent wet shave with my Rex, badger brush, and artisan soaps. I feel like a new man every time both mentally and physically.

      This. I'm female and wet shaving my legs changed the whole experience.
      I used to shave in the shower and it was an uncomfortable chore that I dreaded; something to get over with quickly (not to mention the awful irritation after).
      Now I put on some music, pour a whiskey soda, and sit on the tub edge enjoying the self-care ritual and letting my mind relax. Afterward, I feel physically and mentally refreshed and taken care of. Now, shaving is something I look forward to as a time to unwind and connect with myself in a caring way.

    THANK YOU!
    Oh my god, every video on YT and even professional shaving sites do not tell you to do this. They literally go from "soak your brush" to "now whip your brush around the bowl" - completely skipping the soap... even when it's a bloody LATHER tutorial. This is the first one that explicitly says, "scrape some into the bowl".

    I have been mug soap shaving since 96' and even I picked up some new tips and tricks from your 3 part video. I also saw where you like Blues and B.B. King. I live in a little town and was lucky enough to see him live at a small show with maybe 60 people. I was really close to the stage and was blown away by how incredible he sounded live. Thanks making such great videos. I thoroughly enjoy them.

    Thanks, Kevy. This popped up in my UA-cam feed, so I thought it would, of course, be worthwhile watching. You were going along in a rather straight-laced way. I figured there wouldn't be laughs in thos one. But, tjen, you made your comment about remembering to wash the spoon before enjoying coffee. Thanks for the laugh, eh. Apart from that, knowing that tjis or that method of producing a lather is going to produce a nice lather totally overrides the concern about how long it will take to make it. It'll be worth whatever time you know it will take to produce it.
    Thanksnagain, guy.

    You are the MASTER latherer, Kevy! A question, if you will entertain it: i heard elsewhere, cant remember exactly who, a fellow warning that you should not splay and rough up a good badger hair brush when bowl lathering, to just gently brush the tips across the soap. Has this been your experience? I only have one Simpsons - a Duke 3 Best - and I certainly don't want to damage it unnecessarily, if he's on point. It set me back about $100 here stateside. Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

    • @kevyshaves4109
      @kevyshaves4109  5 років тому +1

      I've heard that too about badger brushes and actually mentioned it in a recent video when I used my Simpson Chubby 2. I splay them a little but I tend to take a bit more care when building a lather with a badger brush. If you're worried about damaging your brush, just play it safe and don't do it. Cheers. Kevy.😀👍

  • @azshooter348
    @azshooter348 4 роки тому +1

    Next time, try this so your oatmeal spoon won't taste so soapy: add about 10 drops of water directly to your hard soap, then load your damp brush. Add a few drops of water at a time to the bowl while building lather - simpler, quicker and makes the same merangue-like consistency of dense, slick lather.
    I recently installed a laptop in my shave lab, so I can watch videos like yours while enjoying my morning shave - In the time you fiddled around with your soap, I build my awesome Merangue-Like (no, it's NOT 'yogurty') lather and completed my 3 pass shave.
    I have noticed that I get a smoother and longer-lasting shave while playing YOUR videos, than I do with those other video shave guys!

    That's whipped up nicely. Has anyone found the shape of the bowl makes a difference? I'm using a bowl at the moment with high sides. I believe this may be scooping a lot of air in. I've ordered a shallow wider bowl which I'm hoping will facilitate thicker creamy lathers.

    • @beg033
      @beg033 2 роки тому +2

      In my experience, good depth and good width are key in a shaving bowl. I've tried many shaving bowls, and ironically the best and fastest lather I've got from is a nice soup (or cereal) bowl I've got for dirt money from a mortar store. I keep it around and occasionally use it to whip up a good lather. Approximate dimensions on that bowl: 150mm diameter & 85 mm depth. I think ridges are overrated. The capacity of the bowl is more important for lathering. The lather needs space to exist, so the more the space the more the lather.

    When I bowl lather I like my Fine Lathering Bowl. It has the ridges, but it also has a thumb hold to help me keep hold of the bowl while it gets wet. Once you drop the bowl to a Tile Floor, there is no saving it; like Humpty Dumpty it is gone.

    • @kevyshaves4109

    • @kevyshaves4109
      @kevyshaves4109  6 років тому

      Lather is quite subjective. Everyone likes their lather differently, some like it thick and paste like, others like it to have a bit more water added to it. I guess there's no right or wrong way to do it. I like my lather to be quite thick and have a nice sheen to the finish of it. That way, I know it's going to be slick as there's enough water added to it to make it like that. Hope that explains. Kevy 👍

    How do you know when the lather is complete? What are the signs that it is ready?

    • @kevyshaves4109
      @kevyshaves4109  7 років тому

      It should resemble the consistency of a thick yogurt or like a whipped cream consistency with a nice shine on the lather. The best thing I could suggest is to buy a really cheap soap like arko and a cheap cream, and practice lathering either on your face or in a bowl. Not necessarily to shave with, just practice adding water etc., until you find out you have the desired consistency for you.
      There's no right or wrong way to lather soaps and creams. Some people prefer a thicker lather, whilst others prefer it to be a little more dry. Once you get it the way you prefers, you'll get the hang of it pretty quick. Don't be afraid to experiment adding water and sometimes the more you work it in the bowl with the brush, the thicker the lather will get. I hope this helps. Good luck. Kevy 😀

    • @1964CJW
      @1964CJW 7 років тому +2

      That's a great idea. Thank you. One more question, does the amount of water added change the slickness of the lather? Is wetter, thinner lather slicker, or not necessarily?

    • @kevyshaves4109
      @kevyshaves4109  7 років тому

      Wetter thinner lather isn't always the slickest lather, no. The water content does make the soap more slicker. It's finding the balance between adding just enough water as to adding to much water. It's much easier to get the lather just right if you only add a few drops of water at a time. You'll be surprised how much a few drops of water can make the soap increase in volume. Adding water will also help give the soap the shine I was talking about and this will let you know that it's going to have good slickness. Some soaps can take a lot of water content and they'll still to continue to lather just fine. Cella is a great example of a thirsty soap. By this, it just means it can take/handle a lot of water content in the lathering process. Some lathers dry out a little during the shave so a good tip if this happens is to dip the very end tips of the bristles on the brush in the water and that will help add a little more moisture if the lather seems a bit dry due to it being sitting out in the open between passes. Take a look at some of my videos or others on UA-cam and you'll see what I mean. Cheers. Kevy :)

Do you have any links to shops in the Uk I might order this product from. Or a similar product. Thanks for your videos, I've learned a heap of things from you. Best wishes and Merry christmas. Andy H in Nottingham.

      Hi Andy. There isn't anyone at the moment in the UK that sells the Captains Choice bowls I'm afraid. There are a couple of good places that do shave bowls and scuttles and I'm sure they do bespoke orders too, so you can contact them and tell them what you want.
      Here's the links..

      Thanks for the quick reply Kevy, very kind of you. I'll be sure to check things out. Have a great week. Keep warm up there in Scotland. It's my favourite place. Best wishes. Andy.

      After using the soap, I rinse off the excess lather that's in the tub then store it with the lid off, upside down for a day or two to let it dry completely, then I put the lid back on it and store it as normal in a drawer. Kevy 👍

    I just load my brush from the puck without scraping any soap from the puck. Works just fine for me. YMMV

    I think I would try using a bedpan for lathering. Generous space to work up a good amount 😆👍

    One day, I’m going to stop being a cheapskate and buy a quality shave bowl, but can’t help getting by with a large side Boston Market bowl. It caters to my common senses and usually comes filled with candy yams.
    The bottom of the bowl is just rippled for days

    This takes too long imo. I'd rather load the brush from the soap and face lather...

      It does take longer to bowl lather but if I have the time, for me, it adds to the whole shave experience 😀

      Can make bowl lathering faster with softer soap. My bowl has a lid so I put a little soap the night before.

      Kevy Shaves I liked the idea putting a bit soap on a bowl. it probably saves wasting soap.

    A neat idea, scooping a hard soap with a spoon. It should also work when one wishes to leather bowl a stick soap like Speick.

    • @kevyshaves4109
      @kevyshaves4109  8 років тому +1

      Yes it works great. Just remember to rinse the soap from the spoon before you make some coffee! Lol 😀
