Started using a safety razor about Sep 2023. Bought a Merker 34C the other day as it seems to be the most recommended beginner razor. It's night and day from the Viking Chieftain Odin I have been using. Also, after going through a sample pack of 15 or so different kinds of blades, I'm settling in on the Astra Superior Stainless.
I bought a 6C direct from Rockwell after seeing this, couldn't be happier with it. After a 20 year hiatus from wet shaving this razor made it so easy, having fun trying different settings, blades and creams. Thanks Kevy for your really helpfull vlogs.
You nailed it with the Rockwell 6s. It won't win a beauty contest but it is no question the best shaving DE I've ever used. Smooth and efficient, it delivers perfect shaves without cuts or irritation. The only thing I "don't like" about the 6s is getting a perfect shave every time can actually get boring. Other than that it is a RAD killer.
Kevy, based on your review of the Rockwell 6S (that I saw for the first time a week or so ago), I went out and purchased one. I can't emphasize enough how right you are about that razor. With just one shave, lt lept to the top of my rotation. Solid and very welcome advice. Thank you.
I own many DE razors. I've been using a Gillette Vintage 195 FAT Boy from 1961 for a while now. If I had to choose just one razor, it would be this one.
Those who are saying they are never using a gillette razor again...I'm guessing you mean the new ones. The 1980s and before razors are amazing. I have quite a few of the new top ranked safety razors and I always go back to my vintage Gillettes.
I loved this review because not only did you mention your top 5 but you gave fantastic closeups of each. I’d love it if you did more videos like this and maybe you could do a video on your top 5 shaving soaps, blades, aftershave etc too. 😃
Buy an adjustable razor. That way you're not stuck with something that's too aggressive or not aggressive enough. You find your perfect shave. I bought my Rockwell T2 after figuring this out after pondering which would be the best razor to buy after I bought a cheap razor on Amazon that cut me to bits.
I got a qshave adjustable razor of Amazon on Friday but haven't tried it yet as I'm currently shaving with my gilette ballend 1918 ww1 opencomb vintage razor that arived on Wednesday(ordered of ebay) and I love it it's my favourite of all my razors so far, but the one I'd recommend for beginners which started it all back in April is my dad's old ballend Gillette from the 1950's great shave (wilkionsonsword blades) as gentle a razor as you'll get perfect for when you need a quick shave in a hurry too.
Love my Merkur 23c and 34c!! Use them both with Shark platinum blades and Derby Premium blades!! I’ve been wet shaving for years! Left cartridges a long time ago.
I just bought the Edwin Jagger DE 89 in chrome last night. I have some experience with safety razors, but it’ll actually be the first safety razor of my own. Pretty excited for it. I’ve even been letting the stubble grow in anticipation
Can't believe I never tried DE wet shaving before. Lifetime of plastic disposables. Had my first DE shave with a cheapo Weshi this week and I'm hooked. Wasted so much money of disposables over a lifetime. Going to try some other DE safety razors. Merkur, Viking, Edwin Jagger, Rockwell, Parker. I consider it investing in new tools. See what designs I like. So cool. Great info thank you. Helps me narrow down which ones I want to try first.
I've used quite a few razors myself and like you I do hold a soft spot for my Merkur 23C (same head as a 37) It's what I started with... I have found the true test of a razor is Head shaving... the hair is so dense around the lower back and sides smoothness and efficiency are a must! The 2 at the top for me is my Merkur Slant 39C (Sledgehammer) you could go against the grain on the 1st pass with zero tugging... I have a Razorock old German 37 slant as well that is close to performance but lacks the weight of the 39 which I like. My 2nd fav. is my Razorock SLOC (Self Lubricating Open Comb) I bought it just for the cap which I heard would tame down my Muhle R41.... what I was surprised to find out is the SLOC is a damn fine razor in its own right! light and nimble more efficient than an R41 Without the rough ride.
i personally like the Murker style safety razors where you can turn the dial to increase or decrease the travel of the head. You can get a knockoff for real cheap (i paid $20 about 6 years ago) and it's so versitile for even longer hair and on the #1 setting it gives the closest shave i've ever gotten from a razor. That 1 razor because it's adjustable can do the job of 6 at a fixed setting. For me it was a no brainer
I have never had a problem in the past until the past several years. Now with the disposable double blade "Bic" and even the Gilette Fusions pull like hell even with new blades and a new battery in the fusions. I use good soaps, Barbasol, Edge jell, and Old Spice Mug, with the same pulling out the soft beard and mustache "limber beard".
Merkur 15C open comb gives the best head and face shave without any cuts or irritation. I have the 42C close comb aswell, which is the exact same head as the 34C, doesn't give as closer shave as the 15C especially around the back of the head and ear areas!
I don’t have that many razors. The 2013 Mühle 41 might be the one that does everything I need. My Merkur Futur is extremely efficient for head shaving, but the adjustability comes at a price of tolerance. Use the highest setting without care and you will be bloodied as it skips across your skin like a stone skipping off water. The X3 ikon slant is a very forgiving slant. I like shavettes. The dovo is very easy to use. The Feather AC is also quite forgiving because the blades don’t have sharp edges. My favorite is called an Focus Slim A1. It has edge guards like the dovo. The worst is called a Zertone. I have three noticeable scars on my face from one shave with that thing.
Hi, Kevy. We're in 2019 and you need to update your top 5 safety razors DE. For sure your choices are different at this moment and I'm curious what have changed after two years.
I really do need to update this top five. The trouble is, there seems to be another razor comes out every few months that I try and it goes into the top 5 😂 I'll try to do one soon. Kevy 😀👍
@@kevyshaves4109 thanks and I know what do you mean, and I'll wait that you decide to make your next top 5 even with those restrictions that you've mention... Keep going with your great videos, I just love to watch what stuff are you using in your shaves and with the feedback I could go forward and decide what to buy.
Great reviews!!! I am new to DE wet shaving as well and despite a few cuts I am getting better each time. My first was the henson mild. Great razor but needed something more aggressive and now I go back and forth with the rockwell 6c which is phenomenal given the price point. Think the merkur 34c will be next to my collection 🤔. Again awesome review and happy shaving everyone 😀

I'm ordering a Merkur 23C with extra long handle for my first DE razor. Can't wait to get it.
I have started wet shaving with a DE just recently with an Edwin Jagger but I don't particularly get on with it. I suspect the problem is the super smooth head with heavy chrome plating as I think this tends to drag on the skin I note that your two favourites have a more rough and less polished surface and I suspect that this is actually deliberate and beneficial. I'm tempted to buy one of your top two. Thanks.
Levy, love the video as a newbie I watched this over and over and my first buy was a Rockwell 6c. Would love to see you do a follow up video in 2020 to re-visit your current top 5, as I’m sure you’ve tried loads of razors since this original video and also look back on the Top 5 in this video
@@mgurmgur2 No. It is telling men that they are bad. That's a big difference. It is using a very negative stereotype to portray men in a bad light. Then it says "some" men are OK, implying that most are not. The next time a white supremacist says, "Blacks are bad, but some blacks are OK.", or, when a misogynist says, "Women are bad, but some women are OK.", I will just say OK because, according to many supporters of the commercial, you can't fault Gillette-style logic.
@John Smith Cheers for the heads up buddy, what blades would you recommend? I am still using Gillette cartridges which I had before the shitty Gillette advert, then I will buy a DE safety razor and blades. I went balls in and bought Martin de Candre Shaving Soap, not super impressed though given the price.
I have the Rockwell 6C. It's half the price of the 6S and some say that it is smoother. I use the 6C every time I shave and I also use the #4 plate. I might try the #3 again. The alignment of the blades is perfect and I don't have to twist or push the blades to get things straight like other razors. I can't remember the Gillette razor that I used in the '70s and don't know what happened to it! I think that it was a twist open and adjustable. It was inherited.
My Top 5 (+2). 1. Feather AS-D2 - Feels very smooth and mild, but it's very efficient! 2. Mühle Stylo or R89 - Classic, wonderful shave. 3. Edwin Jagger DE86BL - Another great shave. I don't have the DE89. Uses same head as Mühle R89. 4. Merkur 38c - I don't have the 34c, I wanted the bigger one. 5. Merkur 23c - I like that it's a 3 piece, so I can switch out the head with other handles. Great shave. 6. Maggards MR7 with V2 Open Comb - honorary mention 7. Vikings Blade The Chieftain - It just gives a good shave. I know there are cheaper versions of it available.
This is the video I’ve been looking for! An honest review by a regular guy, not some bow tie wearing barbershop sponsor. I have been watching video after video in my spare time for about a week, trying to do my research on double edged razors. This video is 4 years old now but it showcases some razors that are still considered the best today! I’ve been using cartridge razors for years and I can’t believe I never took these old razor designs seriously. But it makes so much sense that DE razors are better. Of course 5 blades is 5 times the irritation with every pass, but it’s also how the shaving industry (Gillette) makes money. All their new designs and features - it’s all gimmicks. Overpriced and underperforming. I’m sick of the razor burn I always get. I’m switching to safety razors and I really want a great first razor. I’ve been leaning on the Merkur and the Jagger as many have attested to their quality, but now that I’ve seen your video I’m hooked on the Rockwell 6C. I’m a sucker for chrome and the 6C just looks beautiful. There are fancier looking razors out there both more and less expensive than Rockwell but the most important part is how well it functions. And the 6C is said to give fantastic shaves even compared to other top DE razors. Man, an adjustable 6 size razor is just what I need to dive into the world of DE shaving. I can’t wait to get my hands on one and toss my old cartridge razor aside. I do have one question though, how big of a deal is it to get one of those lather soaps I keep hearing about? Where you mix it in a bowl and use a brush to put it on. Is it really that bad to use some regular Barbasol with DE razors? Thanks for sharing your well thought out list 👍🏼
You won't go wrong with the Rockwell 6C, its a great razor. There's no hard and fast rules when it comes to shaving this way. If you want to use Barbasol, thats fine. There are lots of online vendors selling some great shave gear. But my advice would be...take your time, find out what you like and don't like and just enjoy the journey. Keep me posted as to how you're getting on. All the best. Kevy 🙂
@@kevyshaves4109 Hey Kevy I am loving the Rockwell 6C. This thing is a world of a difference from cartridge shaving. I can’t believe how easily it cuts through hair. No irritation from this razor. I’m actually looking forward to shaving now. I’m hooked
I started with that black plastic Wilkinson sword de razor. Not great but I squeezed a reasonable shave out of it. Then I moved on to the 34c and off I went really. 😲
The Rockwell bar none is my favorite razor. I’ve been waiting a year for their model T to ship out, I put $100 down on it over a year ago Should be here in March
Tony Marinelli Great choice as your number 1 Tony. I'm waiting to hear what people think of the model T before I decide if I want to get one. If it's anything like the 6S, I'm sure I'll want one. Cheers. Kevy 😀
My top 5 favourites most to least so far... 1. Merkur Futur 2. Merkur Progress 3. Parker Variant 4. Merkur 34c HD 5. Gillette Super Slim adjustable. Thank you for your top 5. Now the Rockwell 6c is on my wishlist.
Loved this video Kevy!! I might add that your top two are my favorite two as well. For what you get in terms of quality, features, and durability make them both not only great razors but great values for the money. It's funny how when I started watching these videos everyone seemed to be starting their UA-cam Channels with the Merkur 34C, then over so many new products being produced both affordable as well as premium then the push towards the Gillette Classics and so forth you don't see many showings of the 34C anymore. That's why I like how you said it has a sentimental place for you. I definitely have to get one of those as well as a DE89. Again loved the video Kevy very enjoyable.
Thanks John. I like all the razors I have in my den. The 34C does have a special place n my heart as it was the first razor I bought when I started shaving this way. And you're right, I bought it because back then it seemed to be the razor everyone was using. Cheers. Kevy 😀
I have every one of those and you are exactly right ! That Rockwell 6S I didn't want to be my favorite because its kind of heavy and not real pretty but it shaves so good I had to get over it ! Lol
Nice video Kevy! I love these types of videos. Congrats on 2 yrs of traditional wet shaving! My top 5 just about mirrors yours except I haven’t tried the Parker Variant yet, but it’s currently in the mail on its way to me. The Rockwell 6S is my number one. Followed by my EJDE89. My number 3 would be my Gillette Slim Adjustable. Number 4 would be the Merkur 34C. Number 5 is not yet known since I don’t have my 5th razor yet.
Thank you James. I think you'll like the Parker Variant. I was a bit, torn between choosing between my vintage Gillette slim adjustable and the Fatboy. I like the shorter handle and balance on the Fatboy. Cheers. Kevy 👍
#5 Merkur 39C slant (the "Sledgehammer") #4 Parker 99R (my 1st DE razor) #3 Gillette Aristocrat (1947-1948 version) #2 Gillette Slim Adjustable #1 Rockwell 6S Version 1. I know a lot of guys had issues with Rockwell's initial razor, but I must have been lucky enough to get a great one, I love it! Have a great day, Kevy, thanks for another great video! Crackin' !! 😊
I'm still searching, while avoiding Gillette, because of their advert. I have an old 1958 Gillette that''s still serviceable, from the year before before I went into the military. When I can afford it, I'll try the Rockwell. I really like your channel, and I enjoy the intelligent comments made by your viewers. I wish I had a Scottish accent like yours. Thank you for an informative and entertaining half-hour now and again.
New to DE shaving and I find this helpful as I'm looking to purchase another razor. I bought a Rockwell R1 for an inexpensive starter and will move it to my travel razor as it won't break the bank if it gets lost or damaged. It actually doesn't shave too bad. I have a Merkur 38c and I love it! You have me thinking about that Rockwell 6S now. On the other side, I haven't heard a lot of good things about the Rockwell Model T so far.
Hey Jb. There's lots of great razors out there to think about buying. Yes, the 6S is an awesome shaver for me, it just works great. The 38c is also a very good razor. Have you thought about an adjustable razor to add to your shave den? Always good to have one of those as they give you lots of options as to how mild or aggressive you want your shave to be. Just a thought. Cheers. Kevy 😀👍
@@kevyshaves4109 Thanks for the reply Kevy! I just yesterday scored a 1958 E4 Fatboy in great shape. I am going to shave with it for the first time later today and I can't wait! Is there another specific adjustable that you would recommend?
@@kevyshaves4109 I tried the Fatboy with a brand new Feather blade with setting #3 and Proraso red. It felt like it drug across my face quite a bit so not a great first shave. Tried it a second time on the same setting with similar results. Put in a new blade for my third shave and dialed it up a bit to a #5 and got a great shave! I was wondering at first if I was holding it at the wrong angle as I've heard you have to put these at a bit more of an angle. I think I might try #6 next time, but I'm pleased to know now that I can get a great shave with this classic E 4 Fatboy! Thanks Kevy! Thanks also for the recommendation on the Variant!
Brilliant! Stick with it. Sometimes it takes a few shaves to dial a new razor in and to find a setting and a blade that works well. Great to hear you're getting there with the Fatboy. Thanks for letting me know. Kevy 😀👍
Hi Kevy, I just got into wet shaving.. I bought a Merkur 34C HD. I liked it, but found the handle a tad short. I wanted the same head, but a longer handle. Geo suggested a 38C. It's my daily driver. The 34C is held in reserve, or for travel. I've found "My" razor. LOL The only bad shave I've had since getting the Merkurs was when I tried using a Dorco blade. It tore me up, so it only lasted one pass.
@@xlilnetx I've used a number of different brands so far the Silver Star turned in the best performance. With the Derby Extra in second place. I've recently acquired a Rockwell 6S and and going through blade trials again.
@@caninedrill_instructor5861 I just got my 34c had and man I didn’t get any burn from my alum block, it came with a murkur super platinum blade. It was a mild smooth shave. The blade are too expensive tho, 10 bucks plus for a 10 pack. I’m going to try the ones you used thank you
@@xlilnetx I'm glad that you'll try it. That way you can make an informed decision. BTW: If you get a hankering for another razor. I would strongly recommend the Rockwell 6S. It's rugged, well engineered and it's system of interchangeable bottom plates is simple, rugged, versatile and ID10T proof. I'm no expert, I'm just an opinionated n00b.
Great choices there Kevy. My top 5 DE razors are: 5. PAA Bakelite Open Comb Slant, 4. Gillette Bostonian, 3. Gillette Ball End Tech, 2. Merkur Futur, and 1. Rockwell 6s. The last two I do not own, but have used them previously. Very tough choices to make as I could substitute 3 of them for other vintage Gillettes I own.
Thank you, Mr K, for yet another interesting and informative video. Now please, how's about one based on your five LEAST favorites?.....And with dishonerable mentions of course!
Ha ha! I like all of my razors for different reasons. I've only let go 2 razors I've bought, the Merkur Futur and my Muhle R41. I just didn't enjoy using them as I felt they were too aggressive for me. Maybe if I use them in a few months time I will feel different about that as my technique improves. If I don't like a razor, it won't stay in my den. I'd rather someone else enjoyed using it. Cheers. Kevy 👍
Wow - this is almost exactly what I have, in the same order of preference! 1. Rockwell 6C, plate 4 "The Perfection" 2. Parker Variant Black "The Daily Driver" 3. EJ DE89 Black Diamond 3D "The English Gentleman" 4. RazoRock German 37 Slant "Die Gilliotine" 5. Gillette Slim K3 1965 "The Timeless Classic" 6. Mühle R41 Grande "The Widowmaker"
Hi Kevy... great video. You and I have similar tastes. My top two razors to date have been #2 Parker Variant #1 Rockwell 6S. Though I just received the new RazoRock Mamba CNC machined SS razor. Have yet to give a thorough testing, but honestly I don't think the Rockwell will ever be dethroned. It gives me BBS shaves without even trying... never a weeper never any irritation. Truly an amazing razor. Cheers
We both have very good tastes, right Caeser! Lol 😂 Let me know what your thoughts are on the Mamba when you give it a go. The 6S just works great for me. Cheers. Kevy 😀
That Rockwell 6S on #1 might be replaced by the Rockwell Model T later this year! Been waiting so long for new adjustables but the Variant came out they say its the spitting image of Merkur Progress in aggressiveness and it made me turn away from getting it. Plus the paint flaking, which you mentioned they fixed that. My favorite is my Fatboy, even with bent safety bars its as mild for everyday shave or as aggressive every other day, as needed. Thats something my Mergress cannot handle, it wont go anywhere near as mild as Fatboy. Hoping Rockwell Model T comes through in the image of Fatboy as the Variant came in the image of the Progress. Im curious now about the DE89 but two things, they say it has some Zinc part that breaks easily and its not adjustable so I cannot change to what I need on the fly. So my eyes now are on Rockwell Model T, maybe Parker Variant and One Blade Core.
I'm waiting to hear the reviews on the Rockwell model T. It looks a beautiful razor. Let's hope it does shave like a modern day Fatboy, that would be awesome! Cheers. Kevy )
Nice selection! I don't know why, but I like watching these "Top 5" style of videos. I guess it's because I get to compare them with my preferences. I only own 5 razors so my list pretty is easy to do: 1) Vintage Gillette flare tip 2) Merkur 34C 3) Mühle R89 4) Vintage Gillette Slim Adjustable 5) Schick Krona
Thanks for the video. These Top# lists are an important part of popular culture. My top five are: 1. Feather AS-D2 (no comparison really) 2. Edwin Jagger DE89 short handle 3. Rockwell 6S 4. Merkur 34C 5. Gillette Slim My hall of shame (not the razors, but my incapability to use them): 1. Merkur Futur 2. Muhle R41 3. Feather Popular 4. Wilkinson Classic 5. Gillette Lady 60’s (sic)
Ha ha, your hall of shame made me laugh! I had number 1&2 on that list and I just couldn't get along with them either and sold them. Someone else will get the use of them rather than me. I lil your top 5 razors list. I've heard good things about the Feather AS-D2. Thanks for sharing. Kevy 😀
Hi Kevy. Great video my friend. For now, my top 5 favorite DE razors are: 1) Wolfman WR1-OC .74mm Gap with Darwin Handle 2) Timeless Polished SS OC Razor with 0.95mm Blade Gap, Scalloped Cap, & Dimpled Handle 3) Muhle R41 2013 4) RazoRock Titanium Baby Smooth 5) Blackland Polished Blackbird Closed Comb I bought 2 razors this month that I have not tried yet - been sticking to OC's for October, that may break into the list: The Rockwell 6S & The RazoRock Mamba. Now we need to discuss SE's!
Thank you Kevy, I'm enjoying your work! As a newbie to the DE world I'm a bit confused by it all.. but it is grand nonetheless.. makes something we do all the time much more satisfying--Hey, why not! Frank from Boulder, Colorado, USA
G'day Kevy the only razor you haven't tried or experience in your wet shaving den is the Colonial Razors the General SE, IF you want to stop wearing you're Scottish Kilt during the winter season.
thanks i also fell in love with the edwin jagger with the black 3d diamond grip from one of your videos and purchased it thanks alot! mine does look a bit different from yours tho. it has Sheffield England engraved on the bottom of the handle instead of the gnarled design grip
It's great razor. Yes, I seen that. I think they changed the design on the newer versions of this razor. I hope you continue to enjoy it. Cheers. Kevy 😀
Great video Kevy, My top Five is No1 Rockwell 6C, No2 Supply Single edge razor, No3 Parker Variant, No4 Edwin Jagger DE89, No5 Vintage Gillette Slim Twist, all fantastic razors but like you whatever blade I put in the 6C it just gives such a smooth shave. I'm looking forward to the Rockwell Model T which i'm sure will be another winner....All the best Kevy, Mark
Nice list you have there Mark. I'm going to,wait to hear what the reviews are like for the Model T but hopefully they'll all be positive. Cheers. Kevy 👍
Just discovered your UA-cam channel and I am loving your videos. I have never shaved with a DE razor and have been watching many, many videos to help me prepare for this. I watched your 1st shave video and what happened to your neck is what happens to my neck when I use cartridge razors. I found that if I keep using the cartridge until it became duller, it helped to lessen the rash / bleeding. I now realize my technique was total crap (poor facial prep, poor shave foam, pressing to hard, etc), but I still do have sensitive skin. I have been shaving with an electric rotary shaver now for years and I have never been really happy with the results, but it at least does keep the rash / bleeding down to a minimum. I would like your advice. I am planning on buying the Edwin Jagger DE89 as my first DE wet shave razor. I am having a terrible time trying to determine what would be a gentle introductory blade to use with it. As I gain confidence I can evaluate the results and determine if I want to try a different blade, but I do not want to choose a blade that is too sharp or aggressive to start as this might turn out bad. Do you have a suggestion for 1 or 2 blades I should try? Do you think the type of blade really has that much of an influence, or am I fretting over nothing and should pick any recognized name blade at a good price?
Hi Alan. Thanks very much for the kind words. As you seen on my first de shave, I too have sensitive skin. It's not nearly as bad now as it was back then, two years ago. The Edwin Jagger DE89 is a great start. A good mild and smooth blade...my choices would be...Astra SP - known as Astra Green, a Dorco stainless blade, Supermax Stainless and a Gillette Silver Blue. These are all considered to be milder blades. I think the best advice I could give would be to buy some blade sampler packs to see which one works best for your beard type and sensitive skin. The choice of blade really does matter in my opinion. The other thing that I would say is try not to apply any pressure onto the razor when your shaving. Don't press it onto your face and try to let the razor glide over the soap. You'll get the hang of it eventually. Also, good preparation before you shave will help, a hot shower or bath. My skin has improved enormously over the past two years from using fantastic products with excellent ingredients. Given time, im sure yours will too. It does take time, but stick with it. Good luck and keep me informed on how you're getting on with it. All the best. Kevy 😀
Thank you for the advice. I was thinking of the Astra SP based on many UA-cam videos I have seen. The best sample pack I have been able to find so far contains: Gillette Siver Blue Gillette Platinum Astra SP Feather Hi Stainless Shark Super Chrome Gillette 7 O'Clock Derby Extra Super Stainless In addition to your suggestions I was thinking the Derby might also be a mild choice. I have also already purchased an Omega Boar Brush and Proraso White shaving soap which I have been practising with. Hopefully I will pick up the EJ and blades in the next two weeks. Could you also comment on your experience with, if any, performing a cold water face prep before shaving? I have heard this is another way to help deal with sensitive skin. Thank you again for your reply and your wonderful videos!
Hi Alan. Those blade samples packs have a very good selection for you to try. Yes, Derby blades are smooth but mild. The Omega boar brush might take a few shaves to become soft but stick with it and the more you use it, the softer it will get. Promos is great stuff. I'm not a big fan of cold water shaves. Scotland isn't known for it's warm climate...lol! I like to treat my face and skin during a shave and warm water feels much nicer than cold water for me. Cheers. Kevy :)
Thank you, Kevy. Nice filming and comments. You mentioned my two favorite, the Merkur 34C and the Rockwell 6S. (I have the 6C, actually.) I had had a Parker Variant which was also a favorite, but it broke, in spite of having been treated very well and gently. Maybe it was defective? It was simply from opening it that it ended up popping open and unable to be reassembled. I imagine I could have sent it in to a shop, but I just decided to opt for safety razors with no moveable parts (besides heads, like the 34C and the Rockwell 6S or 6C). These two razors never produce anything but an excellent shave. Thanks again for an informative and enjoyable video review, Kevy. Best wishes.
Well done again, Kevy. The 6S was my first. I have several others I like too. Here's the thing I haven't heard mentioned much. The way a razor feels has much to do with the blade used. Any one of my razors will feel very aggressive and harsh with a blade that doesn't work well in it. Yet, that same blade may feel great in a different razor. I used a Gillette "silver blue" in an ATT Windsor and it sucked (0.58mm gap, I think). That same blade in the 6S on a smaller plate gap was perfect. OTOH, a Personna red (blue package) makes the ATT wonderful. I'm still sampling blades, and I have a long way to go. But, the blade dynamics for a given razor...and a given skin type...are critical. And we haven't even gotten to the soap and lather quality changes depending on how one builds any particular soap. One other thing I like about the 6S, is that I can leave it on a 1 or 2 plate for daily "polishes"...probably forever! BTW, just received and used the B&M Fougere Gothique... Wow! Might need a church afterwards...
I agree with you 100%. The blade choice in a razor determines how good or bad the shave will be. I've used different blades i the same razor and got very different results in terms of how comfortable the shave was. I love the 6S. It just does what it's meant to do, and does it very well. That B&M Gothique looks great. cHeers. Kevy :)
The 6S is my #1 DE too. I only have 10 DEs. If I had to pick a #2, it would probably be my Henson AL13 (mild). That's the DE I go to if I have any blemishes or irritation from another (not my 6S) safety razor like the Rex Ambassador. Like you, I've never had a bad shave with my 6S or 6C. Given that your Top 5 list is going on 5 years old, it's time for an update. I would be curious to know if the 6S has been uncrowned!
1. Rockwell 6S 3 piece; size changing parts has everything you want in a razor Note: pricey tho, but I don't know what a good price is and I rather want just does the job and not ruff-- adjustable probably solves this. 2. Parker Variant normal 3. Edwin Jagger DE89 normal 4. Gillette fat boy (vintage razor) adjustable adjustable 5. Merkur 34c HD normal i think
Thank You I’ve got the Rockwell 6s in my sights great video Jim Just purchased a Rockwell 6S added to my collection of Razors. Thank You for the information
I'm tempted to buy the rockwell 6c but i'm also tempted by the parker variant. I want something long term, and i don't want to collect too many razors, which is why i'm leaning towards something that's adjustable such as those 2 choices. the variant seems to win out in terms of convenience, but it seems it might lose out in terms of durability in the long run due to moving parts, while the 6c wins in terms of build quality and how good the shave is, but seems to lose out in terms of safety and the inconvenience of having to change plates. if only the 6s wasn't so expensive...
Honestly Jon, if you get either of those razors, they'll both serve you well. I like the Variant because you can change it on the fly and don't have to mess about taking the razor apart. But the Rockwell for me, gives a comfier shave. But either of those razors are excellent. Cheers. Kevy 😀
This list was well thought out. I'm surprised the 37C didn't place; at least as #5, I prefer the DE89 over the 34C also. My list would be almost exactly as yours except with the 37C at the fifth position.
It might've made it in there Alex. I think the 34C holds a sentimental place in my heart as it was the first de razor I ever bought and it was the first one I shaved with this way. There are many razors I'm sure will make it into future top 5 lists. Cheers. Kevy 😀
6c gunmetal is in my parents house at the moment, waiting till Monday to take it as a gift for Easter! Really excelllent razor! I think that is similar like yours, 6s, but much more cheap of course! Hope to enjoy it Kev!
Good stuff. So hopefully you'll have it today. I think it shaves exactly the same as the 6S from what I've heard. Let me know what you think of it when you use it. Have a good week. Kevy 👍
Hello Kevy, and good list. Here's mine: 5. Feather AS-D2 4. 1951 Gillette Black Tip 3. 1959 Gillette Red Tip 2. 1960 Gillette Fatboy 1. 1963 Gillette Slim Adjustable
Great video Kevy. I will have to say my top 5 are as follows...5) Gillette Silver Flair Tip 4) Gillette Red Tip 3) Edwin Jagger DE89L 2) Gillette Slim Adjustable 1) Muhle R41. Thanks and Cheers
Hi Kevy, A bit late in responding but wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your videos. I am relatively new to wet shaving mostly thanks to you. I have followed your recommendations regarding razors, blades, etc from a starters perpective, having purchased and currently using the EJ DE89 LBL and having just ordered the Rockwell 6C, ( the 6S being a little too rich for me ). Tough decision between the it and the Parker Variant! Keep up the good work, Kevy! Looking forward to your next videos. Cheers, Chris.
Thanks Chris. It's always good to hear from new wet shavers. There's lots of advice on here and on some of the Facebook and other Shaving forums. This community has some of the most friendliest, generous and kind people I've ever known. DE89 is a great razor to get you started and the Rockwell 6C is another that is one of the best out there. Thanks for the support mate and I look forward to hearing how you're progressing with your shaves. Cheers. Kevy 👍
Without any ranking, this is my top 5 DE razors Rockwell 6S/C Gillette Super Speed Red Tip Parker Variant Gillette Fat Handle Tech Baili BD178 / Baili BR173 / RazoRock DE1 (same chinese razor)
Hey Kevy the Rockwell 6S is my favourite too. Don’t have a Parker or the Fatboy so it would be 5- Edwin Jagger DE89, 4- Merkur 34C, 3- Parker 94R, 2- QShave Adjustable(Futur clone) and 1 the 6S.
Well Kevy you did it again gave me the final push.I've just ordered the vatiant i've got the 6c which i love. You put me onto that my first razor. This one will be my 8th lol.Got over 20 soaps and 14 brushes. This was the idiot that thought he was getting one of everything.I love this hobby worth every penny lol.Take care buddy and stay safe.(paid just under 40 quid black friday)
Great video Kevy! I ummed and ahhed quite a bit trying to narrow down my top 5 razors. There are at least another 4 that come very close to the ones I ended up going with. I've gone with 1. Supply injector razor 2.Parker Variant 3.PAA Prismatic 4.Gillette Slim Twist 5.Muhle r41. Cheers mate👍
Cheers Tony. It's not easy narrowing it down to just five right?! That's an interesting choice for your number 1 but great all the same. That's what's so good about this hobby, so many differences in everyone's choices. Thanks for taking the time to share. Kevy 😀
Nice video. Have all except the Rockwell. My fat boy is the best of the bunch. My Parker Variant is aweful. Cuts too shallow for an extremely mild shave even on the highest setting. To this day I believe the fat boy is the best adjustable razor ever made with the recur the mercur progress second.
@@kevyshaves4109 definitely keep my eye out for that. Feel like I've missed out on lots of the new stuff, mostly settled with my de89, definitely need to broaden one's horizons!
This is my top 8, Kevy. 1- Gillette black beauty (74) Gillette Rocket (53), Gillette Fatboy (59), Gillette Tech fat handle( 46), Gillette Tech Sportsman(69)/Merkur 34 hd/Phoenix Artisan Bakelite slant oxblood. Have many other razors, but these are in my immediate rotation. Have a great 2018!
Hi Shane. Brilliant! I love hearing from new wet shavers who find this way to shave with DE razors. Glad you're enjoying it. Cheers. Kevy 👍😀
Thank you.
That's great to hear Michael. Enjoy your 6S! Kevy 👍
I did pretty much the same.
I love my 6S!
Still figuring out the best blade.
Thank you for this video. I can see the complete happiness in your face when you talk about your safety razors.
I own many DE razors. I've been using a Gillette Vintage 195 FAT Boy from 1961 for a while now. If I had to choose just one razor, it would be this one.
We need a new list, Kevy! Looking forward to the updated version.
Those who are saying they are never using a gillette razor again...I'm guessing you mean the new ones.
The 1980s and before razors are amazing.
I have quite a few of the new top ranked safety razors and I always go back to my vintage Gillettes.
Well they don’t get a cut if you buy one used 😁
I loved this review because not only did you mention your top 5 but you gave fantastic closeups of each.
For anyone who likes vintage razors Ebay is brilliant very good razors at very reasonable prices
Today I got some Freanchy Brendy for your health! I think you will love it?
I love the De89 with a Feather Blade. Been using it for years. Zero irritation, hardly a cut in years of using it.
I only shave with vintage Gillette razors and have a nice collection. My overall favorite would have to be the Slim Adjustables.
You should do an updated video on this, unless its these razors are the same order.
Great to hear you're finally shaving the right way! Cheers. Kevy :)
I've used quite a few razors myself and like you I do hold a soft spot for my Merkur 23C (same head as a 37)
It's what I started with...
My 2nd fav. is my Razorock SLOC (Self Lubricating Open Comb)
I bought it just for the cap which I heard would tame down my Muhle R41.... what I was surprised to find out is the SLOC is a damn fine razor in its own right! light and nimble more efficient than an R41
Without the rough ride.
i personally like the Murker style safety razors where you can turn the dial to increase or decrease the travel of the head. You can get a knockoff for real cheap (i paid $20 about 6 years ago) and it's so versitile for even longer hair and on the #1 setting it gives the closest shave i've ever gotten from a razor. That 1 razor because it's adjustable can do the job of 6 at a fixed setting. For me it was a no brainer
i couldn't agree more on the Parker. I am a vintage user almost exclusively and when I tried the Variant I was very impressed. Great list.
Cheers Jeff. Parker make some great razors. Kevy 👍
I'm sure i have a 15C somewhere. It might actually be a 15G in gold. Kevy 👍
I use and Edwin Jagger Diamond DE89 razor. It's an excellent mild razor with an etched chrome handle for excellent grip even in wet hands.
Hey Brett. That's a great razor to start you out on your shaving journey. All the best. Kevy 😀👍
Merkur 23c is awesome!! I use it and the Merkur 34c (short handle)!! Enjoy!
Gillette anti masculinity advert brought me here. DE safety razors for life from now on.
Me too! A definite thumbs up on this one!
Those Gillette bastards reminding men not to be assholes.. how dare they!
@@mgurmgur2
No.
We are on the same boat brother. Fuck Gillette.
The Rockwell 6C is a great razor. Kevy 👍😀
6. Maggards MR7 with V2 Open Comb - honorary mention
7. Vikings Blade The Chieftain - It just gives a good shave. I know there are cheaper versions of it available.
Brilliant Scott. An excellent selection of very good razors. Thanks for sharing. Kevy 👍
Kevy 🙂
@@kevyshaves4109
Hey Kevy
I am loving the Rockwell 6C.
This thing is a world of a difference from cartridge shaving. I can’t believe how easily it cuts through hair. No irritation from this razor. I’m actually looking forward to shaving now. I’m hooked
A new video showing your top favorite razors now would be interesting.
Noted!
The focus of your camera is superb.
I started with that black plastic Wilkinson sword de razor. Not great but I squeezed a reasonable shave out of it. Then I moved on to the 34c and off I went really.
😲
Goodbye Gillette! Safety razors here i come!
Yeeesssss! 😂😀👍
It just works!
Nice list there Shane. Thanks for sharing. I think the 6C might sneak into the top 5 if you do get one. Cheers. Kevy 😀
Cheers. Kevy 😀
Thanks so much for the genuine DE reviews, much appreciated!!!
My pleasure!
I have every one of those and you are exactly right ! That Rockwell 6S I didn't want to be my favorite because its kind of heavy and not real pretty but it shaves so good I had to get over it ! Lol
Good choice!
Cheers. Kevy 👍
Fantastic close up video. Thank You for your great video reviews
Nice to see all those close-ups.
#5 Merkur 39C slant (the "Sledgehammer")
#4 Parker 99R (my 1st DE razor)
#3 Gillette Aristocrat (1947-1948 version)
#2 Gillette Slim Adjustable
#1 Rockwell 6S Version 1. I know a lot of guys had issues with Rockwell's initial razor, but I must have been lucky enough to get a great one, I love it! Have a great day, Kevy, thanks for another great video! Crackin' !! 😊
Wow, what a brilliant top 5 list you have there. Thanks for sharing. Kevy :)
Thanks for the comment Richard. All the best. Kevy 👍
Sorry for,the late reply. How did your shave go with the Fatboy? For a modern adjustable, I would recommend the Parker Variant. Cheers. Kevy 👍
Kevy 😀👍
Hi Kevy,
I just got into wet shaving..
I bought a Merkur 34C HD. I liked it, but found the handle a tad short. I wanted the same head, but a longer handle. Geo suggested a 38C. It's my daily driver. The 34C is held in reserve, or for travel.
I've found "My" razor.
LOL
The only bad shave I've had since getting the Merkurs was when I tried using a Dorco blade. It tore me up, so it only lasted one pass.
Which blade u use in your murkur?
@@xlilnetx
I've used a number of different brands so far the Silver Star turned in the best performance.

I'm glad that you'll try it.
Great video Kevy
I'm new to the safety razor game looking for a good first razor. This helped me
Great choices there Kevy.
Thanks for sharing your list Darrin. All good razors. Kevy 👍
5 Gillette Slim 4 Rex Ambassador 3 Blackland Blackbird OC 2 Charcoal Good’s Level 2 Dual Comb 1 Timeless Titanium .95 Dual Comb. Great video as always Kevy
That's a great top five Mark. Thanks for sharing. Kevy 😀
1. Rockwell 6C, plate 4 "The Perfection"
2. Parker Variant Black "The Daily Driver"
3. EJ DE89 Black Diamond 3D "The English Gentleman"
4. RazoRock German 37 Slant "Die Gilliotine"
5. Gillette Slim K3 1965 "The Timeless Classic"
6. Mühle R41 Grande "The Widowmaker"
Brilliant list! I love the names you've given to your razors too. Kevy 😀👍
Kevy Shaves Thanks Kevy, love your videos!
Hi Kevy... great video.
Cheers. Kevy )
Nice video Kevy I might get Rockwell cause my skin is sensitive and get irritation easy maybe it would be good choice....
Cheers
Alan
Ein Alter Engländer hat mir so ein Geschenkt, mit den Worten ein richtiger Mann Rasiert sich Klassisch.Heute bin ich da wo ich bin .
I enjoy watching these types of videos too. Good to,see what everyone chooses. You have some nice razors on your list. Thanks for sharing. Kevy 👍
Thanks for the video. These Top# lists are an important part of popular culture. My top five are:
1. Feather AS-D2 (no comparison really)
2. Edwin Jagger DE89 short handle
3. Rockwell 6S
4. Merkur 34C
5. Gillette Slim
My hall of shame (not the razors, but my incapability to use them):
1. Merkur Futur
2. Muhle R41
3. Feather Popular
4. Wilkinson Classic
Kevy 😀
what about Feather popular?
How about Feather popular?
Kevy Shaves for a begginer, which one do you recommend? E. Jagger DE89, Muhle 89 or Rockwell 6C? Great vídeo by the way
Hi Kevy. Great video my friend. For now, my top 5 favorite DE razors are:
1) Wolfman WR1-OC .74mm Gap with Darwin Handle
2) Timeless Polished SS OC Razor with 0.95mm Blade Gap, Scalloped Cap, & Dimpled Handle
3) Muhle R41 2013
4) RazoRock Titanium Baby Smooth
5) Blackland Polished Blackbird Closed Comb
I bought 2 razors this month that I have not tried yet - been sticking to OC's for October, that may break into the list: The Rockwell 6S & The RazoRock Mamba.
Now we need to discuss SE's!
Nice list Steve. Jeez, you've got some very nice razors in that top 5. I've not had much luck with SE razors recently! Lol 😂😂 Cheers. Kevy 👍
You have a really nice razor's collection. Enjoy it every single day.
Thanks Armando. Kevy 😀
Someone else mentioned I should try the General too. I need to see if I can try one out. The kilt will be worn all the year round! Lol! Cheers. Kevy 👍
thanks i also fell in love with the edwin jagger with the black 3d diamond grip from one of your videos and purchased it thanks alot! mine does look a bit different from yours tho. it has Sheffield England engraved on the bottom of the handle instead of the gnarled design grip
The best sample pack I have been able to find so far contains:
Gillette Siver Blue
Gillette Platinum
Astra SP
Feather Hi Stainless
Shark Super Chrome
Gillette 7 O'Clock
Derby Extra Super Stainless
In addition to your suggestions I was thinking the Derby might also be a mild choice.
Rockwell 6S is my no1 as well kevy.
I wonder if Rockwell will ever release open comb plates. That'd be awesome.
Sting of Truth I would love to see open comb or slant heads for the Rockwell as well!
Sting of Truth There is talk of open combs in the future but they have other projects ahead of that from what I've read.
Nice! We have similar taste in razors! You never know, Rockwell may well be reading this. Fingers crossed. Cheers. Kevy 😀
nothing can't beat German quality
Hi Kevy, would you make a video "My Top 5 DE Safety Razors 2021" ?
I just made one a couple of months ago. Kevy 🙂
That B&M Gothique looks great. cHeers. Kevy :)
MD Boyer b NJ
Good Job. I have the Rockwell too and love it.
Kevy, would THE DART make the list now or would it only be an honorable mention? Thanks!
I think the Dart would make the list now. Cheers. Kevy 👍
There is an updated list I filmed a few months ago. Cheers. Kevy 🙂
@@kevyshaves4109 Thanks! I'll look for it. Now don't give me any spoilers 🤣
1. Rockwell 6S
3 piece; size changing parts
has everything you want in a razor
Note: pricey tho, but I don't know what a good price is and I rather want just does the job and not ruff-- adjustable probably solves this.
2. Parker Variant
normal
3. Edwin Jagger DE89
normal
4. Gillette fat boy (vintage razor) adjustable
adjustable
5. Merkur 34c HD
normal i think
Thank You I’ve got the Rockwell 6s in my sights great video Jim Just purchased a Rockwell 6S added to my collection of Razors. Thank You for the information
Fantastic razor Jim. You won't regret it. Kevy 👍
Cheers. Kevy 😀
I've got the Variant. It really is a great option!
Hello, friend! What do you think, how many lovely razors a MAN should have to be satisfied 100%?
I think satisfaction will be reached at 6 razors. However, my maths is not very good! 😂
Good humour is countless.
Great video. All your videos are very good. The only issue I have is that the Rockwell is made in China.
Here's mine:
5. Feather AS-D2
4. 1951 Gillette Black Tip
3. 1959 Gillette Red Tip
2. 1960 Gillette Fatboy
1. 1963 Gillette Slim Adjustable
Thanks for sharing Tim. Very nice top 5. Seems to me you enjoy the vintage razors more then? Thanks for sharing. Kevy 👍
Kevy Shaves
Yes, I much prefer the vintage razors to the modern ones with one exception....the Feather ASD2.
Great video Kevy. I only own two DE razors so I can't do a top 5. My top 2 are my Fatip Testina Gentile and my Wilkinson-Sword Classic.
Thanks Davie. 2 brushes are more than enough! Lol! Good to hear from you mate. All the best. Kevy :)
Great video Kevy. I will have to say my top 5 are as follows...5) Gillette Silver Flair Tip 4) Gillette Red Tip 3) Edwin Jagger DE89L 2) Gillette Slim Adjustable 1) Muhle R41. Thanks and Cheers
Kirk Green brilliant list of razors you have there Kirk. Thanks for sharing. Cheers. Kevy 👍
Thank you my friend. Cheers
Cheers. Kevy 👍
Hi Kevy. Love your vids! Has this list changed at all…5+ yrs later?
Yes. I need to update it soon. Kevy 😀
Without any ranking, this is my top 5 DE razors
Rockwell 6S/C
Gillette Super Speed Red Tip
Parker Variant
Gillette Fat Handle Tech
Baili BD178 / Baili BR173 / RazoRock DE1 (same chinese razor)
Cool list there Conny. Thanks for sharing mate. All the best. Kevy :)
Great picks I also own the Parker Variant and EJ DE 89. I have been thinking about getting a Rockwell. Most likely will buy the "C" model.
Thanks Jess. Yes, get the Rockwell 6C. Fantastic razors. Cheers. Kevy 👍
Well I just bought the Rockwell C in gun metal
Jess Erlund Great news Jess! Let me know how you like it when you get it. Kevy 👍
Hey Kevy the Rockwell 6S is my favourite too. Don’t have a Parker or the Fatboy so it would be 5- Edwin Jagger DE89, 4- Merkur 34C, 3- Parker 94R, 2- QShave Adjustable(Futur clone) and 1 the 6S.
Sean McCloskey Thanks for sharing Sean. I guess you meant you don't have a Parker Variant? The Futur clone is another great razor. Cheers. Kevy 👍

My top five:
1. Merkur Futur
2. Gillette Fatboy 1959
3. Merkur 34C
4. Muhle R41
5. Edwin Jagger
Nice list Steven. All great razors on there. Thanks for sharing. Kevy 😀
I know this video is old and may not get a response but what are your thoughts on the 2C variant of the Rockwell?
What about the Muhle R41? I, too, love the Variant and the Rockwell.
Hi Jim. I had an R41, sold it. Too aggressive for my soft Scottish skin. Cheers. Kevy 😀👍
Kevy 😀
I knew you would love these razors. I'm gonna get an adjustable when I get into the world of wet shaving which is either the Slim or Black Beauty
5. Muhle R89
4. Parker Variant
3. Merkur Progress
2. Merkur Futur
1. Muhle R41
Great choices. You,won't go wrong with either of those razors. Cheers. Kevy 👍
Great list 👍
Nice video. Have all except the Rockwell. My fat boy is the best of the bunch. My Parker Variant is aweful. Cuts too shallow for an extremely mild shave even on the highest setting. To this day I believe the fat boy is the best adjustable razor ever made with the recur the mercur progress second.
Surely this video is worth a revisit kevy!
It most definitely is worth a revisit 👍
@@kevyshaves4109 definitely keep my eye out for that. Feel like I've missed out on lots of the new stuff, mostly settled with my de89, definitely need to broaden one's horizons!
@@matthewsmith22 Plenty out there to choose from 👍
Very nice video. I sure love that Edwin Jagger. Cheers!
Wow! What an awesome selection for, you, top 8. Sounds like you enjoy the vintage razors a lot. Nice one. Thanks for, sharing. Kevy 😀
Very interesting I am yet to pull the trigger on my first safety razor can you recommend a beginners that wont cost the earth many thanks.
