Him looking at things is easily explained.
    A) He doesn't want people to know he is blind because anybody in this hellscape would take advantage of him if they knew he couldn't see.
    B) If he was born with sight and went blind at some point, you would have instincts to look in the direction of a sound you hear.
    C) It's pretty clear that it's meant to be a red herring. If he never looked directly at things, it would be obvious that he was blind from the halfway point.. but everyone has the thought "Oh he might be blind.. oh wait no, he looked right at that!", when in reality it is just a guy pointing his face at a sound if you look at it in retrospect on a second viewing.
    D) It would seem as though he does indeed have some form of "divine protection", as per those missing bullets aimed right at him with no attempt to dodge at all. If you watch the shootout scene again, you'll notice he only shoots in retaliation. He waits for someone to shoot at him, then he knows the direction the bullet came from and shoots back. In order for him to shoot any attackers, they must shoot him first. I guess from a morality standpoint, it works as well since he is circumventing "Thou shalt not kill" (kill and murder are two different words in the original language, so we know they meant murder not kill) and thus all the kills were in self-defense. If someone were to have such a divine protection, it would not be unusual for him to "see" in his mind, when he needs to see.

    • @JasonJrake
      @JasonJrake 8 місяців тому +6

Even English used to make that distinction. “kill” in English meant murder. “Slay” meant to kill with justification, or without intent or malice.
Many words in the King James Bible translation meant different things when it was written than what they do now.

You know I was going to say that your shoot first theory didn't apply because he cut that guy's hand off before the guy ever did anything to him other than push him.
But I take it back and realize that's wrong because he totally threatened to kill him before any of that. In fact the guy shouted it in his face. God Im ignorant.

I think he likely is not FULLY blind but more then likely pretty close. At the very beginning he doesnt shoot till the cat made a sound, he touches the clothes on the hanging body. You can also hear him click randomly. there are a lot of signs once you know what to look for. But just watching it the first time you end up missing a lot of tells.

As a Christian I love this movie. Eli sent on a mission from God, protected (more or less) until he got the bible (so to speak)to its destination. And on the other hand you had Carnagie, who was on his own personal mission to get it so he could abuse it for his own power. Some Christians didn't like it because of its R rating of course. Or the fact the Bible was talked about as a weapon. But to me thats just naive. We all know it could be used for terrible things in the wrong hands. Some people don't care about if God is real or not, they just look for tools to give them power.
Though to be fair any number of things cna be used by bad people to gain power. Including many books. People still read Mein Kampf and sadly get drawn to that side of things.

I love that his gun fighting is reactionary, he stands in the open waiting to be shot and fire at the sound source.
With almost "divine intervention" throughout, it adds to the idea of this being a new book in the bible, the book of Eli, the tale of a believer on a quest to spread & preserve 'the word'.

The Book of Eli is one of my favorite movies of all time. it's story is well trodden, a hero seeks to complete a humble quest that he is well able to do, but it's meaning of treating knowledge and spirituality as something that needs to be preserved resonates very strongly with me.

I don’t believe my grandfather could sequentially recite the entire Bible. But as a kid we used to shout out random books and numbers for chapters & verses at him and he was right every time but once - and the once I remember he was still right on the chapter but wrong verse. the missing element to your early blind deterrent is the smells and sounds. especially the fight fight he relied on both. the shoot-up you'll notice he only shoots at people that shoot at him so he can pinpoint where they are.
the thing I like the most about the film is that if you don't like the mysticism you can mostly explain it away. which depending on your view point, that can still be a part of the mysticism. i think the 2 biggest are the missed shots and how he was getting to his destination. the 2nd is the easiest to answer. he wasn't. walking anywhere in the US even with an inefficient route would not take you 30 years. he likely used the heat of the sun to find west which may be why he preferred to read in the sunlight. it would hit him in the morning and direct him on which way to go. as for the missed shots you have to make assumptions. the guy that missed twice is sometimes shown to be the only one with some level of honor. maybe he doesn't want to shoot someone in the back. as for all the other shots, they just are terrible. all those shots at the house and it took an RPG before they hit anyone

When I saw this on your list I couldn't wait for your deep analysis. I love the fact that you picked up on sensory issues in the first scenes. I've never seen anyone else start figuring out the twist so early. Amazing
The writers basically left clues that he worked a basic unimportant job at K-mart as a blind person when the war broke out, and he was saved from the initial aftermath because he was already blind; thus he was one of the few who had the skills to be able to survive after most were blinded by the nuclear flash.
The writers had a concept around the phrase “in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king”, but in this case in the land of the blinded the one who already was blind is the only one with true sight.

If I recall the writer (or was it the producer?) said Eli was 100% blind. The explanation for his every action is God acting through him/guiding him. Him looking at things, no real answer. Could just be in the moment Denzel forgot to not stare at certain things. As its natural for us to do normally. Probably would have been better if they got someone blind to actually do the role as they wouldn't make any mistakes. But directing them I imagine would be difficult. Also they did mention on the Bluray that the flash in the sky blinded many who looked at it. Including Eli.

My uncle and mother are fully blind and were born so, my uncle to this day gets accused in stores of not being blind and not needing his guide dog. The majority are just woefully uneducated on how blind people are/operate lol.

41:30 Idaho is the only state in the US that specifically outlaws cannibalism. So you could eat human flesh legally in the other 49 states. The problem would be finding a legal way to acquire said flesh. I wouldn't bet on finding a loophole for that part.

This and Fallen are my two favourite Denzel Washington movies, and that's saying a lot considering all the blockbusters he's starred in (like Déjà Vu, the Equalizer movie series, John Q , Malcolm X and even Two Guns.
Gary Oldman too is brilliant! To me, he carried the Lost In Space movie (the one with Joey). He could always be an excellent villain!
As a Fallout fan (video game and lore), The Book Of Eli was especially special to me.
There's a deleted scene with Solara's sitting next to Carnegie as he dies on a bed and she's reading the Bible, implying that she lied to him.
This was another movie, like the one with Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, that deserved a second watch. The first viewing to enjoy the movie and the second (or third) to pick up on hints you missed.
    To quote another UA-camr, "symbolisms!"

This was a good movie that I think went a bit underappreciated at it's time. Yes, there are a few scenes that are nigh impossible if he's fully blind, but most of the time it isn't THAT far of a stretch. Picking up that it's the same book and The Bible early is almost a bit of a red herring, "I've figured this out already," moment. The delicious irony at the end is almost too perfect, maybe it is just a touch, but really I think it's all earned.
This is one that a bit of a rewatch, knowing he's blind going in, yields many more little things done right than egregious ones. Someone mentioned the very first scene with the cat making a noise and then he firing the bowgun, but also the trap scene's fight in the tunnel that's silhouetted.

Something great that almsot no one caught is the cannibal theme throughout the movie. The couple at the house of course had shakey hands, a sign of a person who eats human meat. At the place where Eli charged his battery, the guy wanted to see his hands, to make sure they don't shake as they don't allow cannibals. We are even told in the city they are civilized and don't eat human meat more or less. The woman at the start acting helpless as a trap mentioned something about meat also.

The movie clearly mirrors the period immediately after the fall of Rome (The Dark Ages) when western civilization collapsed into lawless chaos. During that time Benedictine Monks collected and saved major works of literature and art, most importantly the Bible, which they famously reproduced creating as many hand-written copies as they were able. The plan was to use them to rebuild civilization by planting seeds of Goodness as expressed through Judeo-Christian teachings and philosophy, often reflected in major works of art and literature, and of course, the Bible. In the final scenes Eli is clean shaven and dressed in white, similar to the Benedictines' habits, and the woman goes out into the world to spread the seeds she has learned from him to rebuild civilization...and she will also be protected by God, as was Eli, so she can complete her mission.

In interviews the Gary Whitta (writer) wrote his backstory indicating that Eli was a greeter at K-mart when the nuclear bombs fell. Many of those who survived were blinded by the flash from the explosions. As those individuals had no basic skills as a blind person, Eli instantly became a very important person.
Gary kind of had the concept that this somehow led to Eli not preying on others and not being “blinded” by the evil. And thus Eli was granted “true sight” via his faith guiding him with whatever information he needed as long as he stayed on the path.
Gary took license with some things with Eli from the Bible. Eli originally as a descendent of Aaron was promised everlasting life. Eli blessed Samual’s mother at the temple and she became pregnant with Samual. Eli’s sons grew up to be bad men and God cursed their entire male line to death revoking his protection. Eli the trained Samual to follow and communicate with God. Then Samual went into battle defending the Ark and at that battle Eli’s sons were killed. Eli then an old mostly blind man got news of his son’s death and was shocked, he then fell off his chair and died.
Gary took the fact that Eli became blind, then trained Samual/Solara to speak to God, but Eli strayed from the path and let the word of God fall into evil’s hands and costing Eli everlasting life, However as Carnegie being evil could not understand the word of God as Claudia the only one with the ability to interpret God’s words refused, and Samual/Solara continued on as a prophet/soldier/leader (who was called “the seer” or the faithful one who could see in the Bible). But the concept was that Eli’s mission was not to deliver book, but to deliver its teachings. By being put on this Journey for so long Eli was given the time to read and understand the Bible by heart making possession of a book irrelevant.
But like the Bible Eli was a minor character. While he was a faithful priest, His importance existed only to interact and set in motion those that would do more important things.

If someone starts quoting the Bible to me before a fight, I'm just gonna assume he's a death angel and I'm gonna abstain.

I was so frustrated when i saw the ending of this movie. Omniscient, OMNIPOTENT master of the universe thinks that THIS is the best method to preserve his word. I mean how stupid and cruel is this deity? The only conclusion that we can draw from this story is that this god is petty and evil. Cool action scenes though.😅

It's hard to watch a movie reaction when you are constantly questioning and acting seemingly annoyed at every aspect of the movie. 13:00 minutes in and I had to give up. Not mad, I just know now to just stick with your music reactions.

i forgot how annoying this dudes reactions are, i thought id give it another shot. Nope, still annoying. He knows the movie already and just pretends he doesn't , like hes seeing it for the first time and commenting, every two seconds, like hes getting all these insights from little clues in the movie. He's seen it already and just pretending to make himself seem ultra perceptive.

1:00 no that’s not overkill. Cats have EXTREMELY fast reaction time even faster then a snake bites. He had to have extremely high torc in the bow to make the arrow faster then the cats reaction time. It actually makes perfect sense why when u know physics and animals and hunting
2:48 where u getting green color? U need turn off all those blue and green and neon lights in the back cause they really messing up ur screens color while u watching. U getting a whole different color of what the movie actually is
16:26 bam u finally figured that part out, not sure how u didn’t figure out the mom is blind u thought it was some heightened senses stuff lol but u notice he had to feel and hear and smell everything around him everything but never made the connection he blind aswell, but that’s understandable cause it’s hidden til the end but u caught onto it but didn’t make the connection. I think u skipped the part that made it obvious she is blind and figured it out idk cause didn’t show here
17:17 he only walked away cause he didn’t hear anymore shooting and figured he killed everyone that was attacking him so felt safe to walk away never knowing the main henchmen was right there staring him down making it seem he was just cold like that had him beat and he felt that and let him walk away thinking he was outmatched
