One of the best movies ever made. And knowing the whole time he was blind made it even more better. One of the movies I actually cried while watching. I loved your reactions.
This is one of the few movies that left me actually speechless in the theater... I just sat there through the whole credits... it really makes you take a hard look at yourself and think: How SERIOUS do I take my own beliefs? How dedicated to my own values and beliefs am I today... let alone in THIS movie-world? It's a surprising challenge to one's own morals.
He doesn't see anything. God shows him the way -- and protects him -- from bullets in town and the gut shot at that house -- until he reaches the goal, completed the mission. He "stayed the course and kept the faith."
Like Moses, his god IS GOD. Yep, not my favorite aspect of this movie. Technically though, one could theorize he's just gotten good with his other senses. But, it does add a certain mystique to think God might actually be guiding him, and it certainly works for the spirit of the character and plot-line.
The "My name is Eli" on the inside of his (school?) bag is a dead giveaway that he was blind, but the scenarios he is put in and the acting are done so well that we don't even notice until the end.
As the movie cryptically portrays Eli is so good at fighting because the Hand of God is guiding & protecting him which is why at 14:04 the guy looks down at his gun after he misses shooting Eli in the back as he walked away as if to say "How did I miss?"
If I remember well, this movie was the first time Denzel trained Filipino martial arts. Just four years after he makes The Equalizer and nailed it, he's such a good fighter! I had a great time watching this with you guys 🤗
He's also a trained boxer which helped him adapt so quickly. He even sparred with Michael Spinks before portraying Ruban "Hurricane " Carter in The Hurricane
I love how so much of the movie has a whole new context after the ending, like the badass scenene in town with him saring down the guy was just not knowing he was there :> Or he only shot after being shot at because he didn't know where they were.
He was aware the old couple were canibals because he could hear the cup's rattling on the saucers when their hands shook. If you watch it again his every interaction is explained by him hearing or smelling others. He only shoots the cat when it makes a noise he hears the mouse scampering on the floor and during the shootout in town he only shoots at people after they've shot at him. Gary Oldman gets hit by buckshot which missed the guy he was aiming for. When the bikers attack the couple he cant help because he can't tell the noises of the innocent from the guilty.
Denzel Washington and Jennifer Beals also star in "Devil in a Blue Dress" which you should add to your reaction list. Wonderful adaptation of Walter E. Moseley's first published book. The remaining Easy Rawlins books would have made a great movie franchise. On a side note, 3 cast members from the Harry Potter franchise also appear in "The Book of Eli": Gary Oldman, who portrayed Carnegie was Sirius Black. George (Michael Gambon) and Martha (Frances de la Tour) were Professor Dumbledore (after the great Richard Harris passed away) and Madame Maxime, headmistress of Beauxbaton Academy in "Goblet of Fire".
The Hughes Brothers are twin brothers who also produced and directed Menace ll Society and Dead Presidents. They later went on to work on solo projects
It’s a very underrated movie. It’s interesting with a rewatch when you see all of it and he couldn’t see. He may could have been a bit, but he was definitely legally blind. Great choreography and acting all around. There were lots of undertones all around (machete on the dash board, lightning, speaking script exactly as the very old prophets did). It’s funny with the humor he makes for lyrics and playing it off like something intelligent. He could tell the shakes from the lack of vitamins on the shakes that he knew they were cannibals without supplement (also covered in some other post apocalyptic movies, including The Road that is mentioned). They weren’t necessarily bad or unreasonable, but they had what it took to try to survive. Even when he gets shot in the backpack in the city scene that he’s escaping. Amazing reaction!
Such a great movie I remember the first time I saw it I kept noticing strange things that didn't register with me at first until the ending of course then it all made sense
An extra interesting parallel to this and the Bible is that Saul (to become Apostle Paul) was travelling and was "blinded by a great light in the sky " , and God uses that experience to convert him . And at the end Eli quotes Paul's last words before being martyred, "I've fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith." Great reaction guys!
The shaking hands thing you're thinking of is called Kuru. It's a type of spongiform encephalopathy that was transmitted among the Fore people of Papua New Guinea, when they would eat the brains of infected people. But there isn't any kind of symptom that develops as a result of eating human flesh. They just happened to eat the brain of an outsider who was infected with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, and due to their custom of consuming the flesh of the dead, it got passed around that way.
Also, hes not blackout blind. He and the mother were blind before the war, most(i think most) blind people essentially have a blurry lense which is like looking through a windshield that is frosted or foggged to some degree. People blinded by nuclear flashes have burned retinas, so they dont see anything. Plus, there would have been no services to teach brail
I love how you are about 1/3 the way through you go "wait, is this a Christian movie?" but you are not sure. Then at the end when he recites the whole bible from memory you go "wait, they made an awesome Christian movie? They did"
I always see it as a movie about faith, not necessarily Christian. Three faith traditions share at least some of what is in the Christian Bible. For me, it's about having a moral compass, a belief that directs one's choices and gives one strength, light in the darkness.
@@shirleydurr411well, in this case it is a Christian film, one of thr teachings for Christians says that a day will come when bibles are banned and it is your job to memorize what is in it and keep it in your heart, becuase you will need to know it to share it when the time comes.

There were multiple clues throughout the movie that indicated he was blind...Eli kicking the steps and/or doors before taking a step, Eli smelling the wife's shampoo when she entered the room (highted sense of smell), Eli not reacting to bullets flying past his head, and only returning fire when hearing the noise of gunshots, Eli smelling the thugs, and hearing the bird he shot down for dinner, and the last indicator I believe was when they reached green pastures and he indicated he could smell the salt from the ocean. That was just a few, but it was very interesting to see/recognize when you re-watch for a 2nd time.
I forgot to tell you... human flesh transmits a prion similar to the one that causes the mad cow disease. Repeated consume ends up in a condition similar to that disease, brain and nerve damage, hence the trembling.
This is one of those movies which requires the audience to take a heavy dose of "suspension of disbelief", because in reality, Eli would've been dead and in a ditch a long time ago as a blind person. The mother is the good example of what would happen, if the person doesn't have "other" uses.
