@One Time yes! Rodrigo needs to educate himself, find an attorney pro bono (I'm sure he can't afford to pay one) to advocate for him and get everything in writing. If these two go belly up, if an unforseen catastrophe occurs or they decide to sell the land, where does that leave Rodrigo? And leaving him to work on that massive A-frame alone? 😳 I hope they have property insurance...an accident just waiting to happen.

I’ve never commented before, but I value your approach at how you’re dealing with this surprise. As viewers, we were all shocked also. We all make mistakes in life and this video shows a maturity that not many people possess. Communication in a community is key. I follow you as I’ve recently moved to Costa Rica and am building a place from scratch with my husband. We’re going through ups and downs all the time because everything is so fresh (building water, solar, house, road, etc.). We are choosing not to do it with a community element because we’re both introverts, but I see the amazing pros beyond this bump on your journey. You can’t foresee ever circumstance that comes but I just want to send you all some love and appreciation for sharing and being so honest in your experience that is this life. 🙏

Thank you for your honesty and integrity, and sharing in such a respectful way towards Kake and Adriana. Everyone in this situation has their own responsibility for their part of it, you can't carry it all, and as you said, a real learning moment. I've explored many communities - not living in them but researching and visiting - and this is not an easy road but a beautiful and worthy one nonetheless. As the years go by, each community learned and shifted, and there were always comings and goings, joy and heartbreak - like with any family or in society. You're amazing people and as one of your audience, I appreciate your transparency and I hope that any negative comments from people just fly over your head because you know who you are, and how hard you try, and that's all there's to it. Big love from Vancouver Island

I have only just come across your channel, it is weird watching this as back in the 80's I lived in an off grid community, there were about 14 of us and we grew our own food, had a shire horse to move things around and all worked together.
It was not an easy life BUT it was a great life, one of the hardest things I found was how people all have different ideas and views and that is what caused problems, we had weekly meetings, all ate together etc but it was still very difficult.
I wish you all the best with your project, I now live on a canal boat in the UK after 30 years living on the road.

That’s how it is in Christiania Free Town in Copenhagen. It’s gone quit tech and is in the middle of the capital but it’s going strong for decades. I think it’s durable if the people make rules meet expectations and the flow of not thinking that it’s the same people who starts as later in the process.

You both are amazing. So giving, so kind and so supportive. I started and was the director of a large Progressive Holistic Health Center and I totally agree.. not to live with people you're paying. And what proved to work the best for team communication was everyone sending an email to a communication coordinator 2 times a month outlining the three things you're most grateful for being part of the Center and up to three things you would like to see expand or improve. Then founder or founders of that community can review each one and increase clarity. Also giving people were never a problem.. people that weren't that giving often were a problem. They could see kindness as an opportunity to take advantage of someone. I know you both will be continually blessed 🌟💖

Living in a community is sooo HARD. I feel for both you guys and Kake. Sometimes when we let our resentment build, mole hills turn into mountains and problems seem unfixable and the only solution seems to be to leave because the problems are too big to tackle. I would recommend when you have new community members ask them how they prefer to have tough conversations eg. in a group vs one on one. And be checking in ATLEAST once a week. I wish you guys the best.

I feel like you did a great job of giving us the jist of the issue in the video and I also understand that the comment section of the video isn't necessarily the place to discuss it. I have not listened if you gave an email address so, I don't have that. I, as I'm sure is the case with you and many others, really like Kake and felt he made an awesome addition to the farm and your videos. I did notice a sadness in Kake. When the part happened where they went over to see the bus and talked about “their bus” and how they missed it, but they weren’t saying that it shouldn’t have been given to Kake to live in or that they wanted it back. Kake had a sad look on his face, not that he wanted anything more but that he just didn’t feel that he had as much of a heads up in his life as Jordan and Kailey were given coming from America. A sadness too because he was carrying his elderly dog everywhere probably wanting to not be too far if his little friend needed him. Not to be so busy working on the farm that he might miss something his little dog needed. I’m just saying that I’m sure he felt some kind of pain in his heart because I could feel it when I watched the videos.
I’m just mentioning this now because I want you all to know that Kake loves you guys deeply. Time will heal these hurting spots for everyone. It is all going to be okay. 😔🙏 Just allow yourself some time and eventually Kake will be back in the farmily one day doing something that he enjoys and that is in some way helpful to the farm. It will need to be on Kakes terms because he is a very dear man who goes all out to help, but he couldn’t help but wonder if he were being taken advantage of just as Jordan and Kailey may have at times felt that they were being taken advantage of. It is all the way this world works and it’s confusing because any sort of miss communication or confusion is not from God. Unfortunately, the enemy of this world has a way of working overtime in the minds of humans and therefore they will react instead of seeing things more clearly. In time, all will see and hear clearly and there will be no confusion about anything. It will take a little time though. I’m so sorry that there was this kind of sadness that has fallen onto you all because we really should all forgive quickly, in lightning speed and love so deeply. Trusting that no one is purposefully trying to take advantage of anyone. Everyone just needs to chill for a while. Good job to you guys for carrying on. There’s nothing more you can do if you already apologized for the miscommunication then continue on. Lifting y’all each up in prayer for wisdom and understanding of each other’s hearts. 💕 All is well. 🙏❤️

@@kimberlytelle8313 yes I totally agree. The enemy is working hard to confuse, cause fear and jealousy and envy. Wanting what others have and not feeling like you measure up. Comparing each others situations, you know? I'm in my late 50s , I have alot of experience living in other countries with other people as roommates, housemates and employees. Messy is a good way to phrase a situation like Jordan said. I pray also for all of them to continue to grow, trust and forgive quickly. Move forward and live happy and as transparent as possible. I applaud your decision to not employ community members. When I first became a manager in my younger days, I thought I could remain friends with my employees, but that is a fantasy. Eventually, you will have to insist they do something they don't like, or you will have to provide what is called "coaching" these days (otherwise known as a reprimand), etc. And if you don't lead, coach, or otherwise "manage" your employee, they will walk all over you because, in their minds, it's okay because of your special relationship. I learned the same way you just did, and I'm sure that's common. Keep your business associates separate from your friends and never do business with family.

Just IMO, I grew up in Latin America & my family only moved back to the US when I was in college, I went through a mental shock because everything was so different including the way ppl think, feel, beliefs, actions, etc. so I understand both sides of the coin. IMO there will always going to have some confusion/unhappiness because of the different beliefs, cultures, traditions, sócio & economic situations, etc. Also, Americans can be thought of being in a higher class than the natives in Central & South America & you owning the land, being the head of the community, etc. makes it worse. They’ll always feel second to you & have fear of being kicked out unless they have legal documents stating it differently & have very clear written info as to what the community is, what it means to them, etc. A Latin American would most probably feel that they were employees & if Adriana wasn’t paid to help with Sadie she could’ve felt a bit like she had to, she was doing them a favor or was being taken advantage of.

I know you’ll all recover and find a new normal as you should. However, since Kake was part of the family we all have grown to love I wish if you talk to him again you will tell him that many of us probably would love to hear from him too. We would like a way to reach out to him as well. He may not want that but I just had to say it because we have loved watching him and Adrienne as part of the community there. It seems almost inevitable that something like this would happen along the way to realizing your dream community. As you have noted, this is a complex project and even with the best planning and the best intentions, things aren't always going to work out as you hope. You mention the difficulty of layering an employment relationship on top of being friends and collaborators, the confusion around boundaries and enhanced potential for misunderstandings. When you add cultural differences into the mix--with divergent Panamanian and American meanings and expectations attached to each of those relationships--it gets even more complicated and difficult to navigate. And then add individual idiosyncrasies into the mix. Definitely a learning experience. And this certainly won't. be the last time something like this happens. I wish all the best to you both and to Kake and Adriana as well. They seem like lovely people. I hope that, at some future point, you can rebuild your friendship. In the meantime, we appreciate you taking us along with you on your journey and for sharing the lumps and bumps along the way. Be well and finish that bathroom!

Every so often a energetic shift happens with in a community like yours. I live on 80 acres and live the same kind of way though it is not off grid we are going that direction and organic living. We have opened up to build a community but after 10 years we have halted because of people not following through and wanting more and more and more. I noticed when things started happening is when we had to make a change to make something easier on someone else for what ever reason. The best thing I learned for communicating was what we called blind communicating where all question where asked on paper and and answers where written down. We used a computer where everyone answers where anonymous. It was also a free place to to type out any struggles or concerns. Like a weekly emotional diary that only I was able to see. It helped so much to know where people were at. If you guys would like the format I used feel free to reach out to me I would happily email it to you. One of my Favorite mantras has become this situation does not define me because this to shall pass.

Yes, I think this "blind communication" is great! It allows people of all communication types (as a very strong introvert with ADHD I am not comfortable airing out grievances or voicing an opinion that differs from the majority) to be able to speak their minds annonymously and comfortably so there are no hidden resentments. Love that idea! As you say, not everyone is going to have the same expectations, goals, or aspirations when it comes to a community, but this way of communication let's people become aware of issues before they grow too large to manage.

You faced this setback in a humble, balanced way with wisdom. As a senior, I’m damn proud of you because you two are working in concert together to find the best solution. This way of doing life will take you far and lead to a satisfying life. If I may, I’d like to add my life experience in case you haven’t heard or thought of it before.
People bring their life experiences to the table to help them survive in life. With Cacae (sp?) I don’t know him well enough to speak with certainty, which is a disadvantage but what I do know tells a story and makes sense on why he exited out of Lola’s farm and your relationship. His most obvious obstacle to cope with in the recent past is living under a dictatorship in Venezuela. As Americans, we have never lived under that level of control, injustice, cruelty and oppression. This is especially damaging to those who remembered living in paradise and freedom and suddenly it’s taken away. As Americans, we brag about being free but haven’t been tested on what it feels like without it. We don’t know first hand the value of freedom. Living in that type of environment, one trusts only a few and you must measure your words and actions to survive.
The second point I want to bring up is about relationships who combine friendship along with being an employee. From the perspective of being the boss, your focus is the goods or services to be done, the supplies for the work, deadliness and if you’re driven from your heart, you want to create the best fun work environment to make it easy to finish the job and be satisfied with it. From the perspective of an employee, you understand the objectives listed above but know you don’t have full freedom to speak against or to refuse. If you did, you run the risk of getting fired. No matter how an employer couches himself as being fair, welcoming new ideas, flexible, there is always a bottom line that if it is crossed, the employer has the power to remove the other person by firing him. When someone holds that level of power, an employee is not 100% free to say or do as he sees fit. Circling back to Cacae, you and Kaylee had immense power over him and Adrianna’s life. You not only were his employer but was also his landlord. They were not truly free to do, to speak or to refuse because the consequences were high. Then couple that with possibly old mindsets of oppression still embedded from the past, it makes perfect sense of the actions Cacae and Adrianna took. It’s obvious to me that they agonized significantly with making this decision because they valued their friendship with you so much. Leaving the bus in tip top shape reflected their respect they had for you. Your relationship is not over and is worth working on to restore it. Too many strong bonds were made so don’t give up on them. Be proactive and stay in touch with them regularly. Change the dynamics of the relationship as being equal. You might have thought that you were doing that before but hopefully you see now that it wasn’t. You were always kind and respectful when you needed help but it is a different animal when someone is your equal. Take for example Kaylee (sp?), she can out and out refuse you lean hard on you to go an entirely different way because she is your equal. An employee or a ‘friend” who happens to be someone with lots of talent and availability, who is leaned on (in a nice but persuasive way) is not equal to the one asking for the help.
When a relationship usually begins is because each partner recognizes the valuable assets the other person has and has viable assets the other one admires and needs. Both can contribute and benefit from each other and are on equal footing or bargaining power. We choose life partners, friendships and business partners this way.

I have had great relationships with employers and enjoy their friendship. As an employee who may leave in fall for 6-8 weeks to make more money, I don't relate to my boss for getting mad. I was surprised, why wouldn't he, as a friend, be gracious and look forward to my return. It took him 8 months to call me and ask me to come back to work but when I had a chance to make real money again and told him a month in advance...and he gave me the green light...he later rescinded that agreement on the day I was leaving...because someone else broke their foot, someone else was on vacation for another week...etc. I went anyway. When I did get back, it took him 3 weeks to call me and he was hard, demanding and even wanted to switch to hourly and not salary. I agreed but when I put my hours worked in he complained. Sometimes it is not the employee, it is the employer that causes the problems with expectations that are ridiculous. A few weeks out of a year I have the opportunity to make 70k it is not a given, not always available but when I get the chance, I want to go. I always come back it is the f'd up attitude of the employer that causes all the problems. I am happy to do the work and be there when it's time to turn to it, but hey be happy for me when I get the call to go make serious buck. And don't punish the worker like my employer, who refused to pay my vacation time earned and leave pay earned. If I go back now, I deserve his butthead attitude. Burn me once and I can forgive you, do it again and never again.

I don't know if you have done this, but it may really help you to spend the time, thought, and effort to develop a type "government" charter, stating what you are trying to do, who you are interested in living around, and what happens when things like this happen. I know it seems to take the spontaneity out of life, but sometimes having rules and boundaries actually allows you to enjoy the spontaneity of all the other stuff. If they wanted to be governed, they wouldn't be doing what they're doing. Do you know what the word "government" even means? It comes from the latin 'govern' or, obviously, "to control" the 'mente' or THE MIND. It means to control the mind or mind control. Nobody needs a 'Charter' of missions, rules and boundaries with any type of government anything. Government is nothing but trouble and always has bad intention. Look what's happening in the world right now. Jeeze. The only thing that went awry here is communication and expectation. Not an easy fix but it's a learning curve. A bunch of rules and regulations would defeat the entire purpose of any 'community'.

Bravo, guys, I’m very impressed by how you’re processing what could be considered a beautiful life lesson! I live in El Valle Panama and I am very aware of the cultural nuances required. But, I must say, as a leadership coach, that all relationships, personal and professional, face some type of break in trust. What is required is that you shine a light on that break and work together to move forward. When one party, sorry Kake, shares nothing about what they are feeling, then the relationship is doomed. My invitation to Kake is to ‘own’ his resistance to sharing his truth and heal that wound first - otherwise he will continue to experience these setbacks in his life. Alan Watts is right that if we all ‘simply’ shared our truths, life/society would be amazing. With love 💗

It's very kind, and inclusive of you both to make a follow-up to the initial, real-time news of Kake & Adriana departure. This is what life is. We are always learning. The variables to making a community from the dirt up (not to mention with a new baby, many animal members, building of homes & structures, etc.) work are endless. I also see, how friends want to help each other, and then friends want to financially compensate and before you know it your friend has also become an employee. All with the best of intentions. It's ok. All you, we, can do is our very best with the knowledge, tools, skills, experiences we have. We all have to figure out what we want which does not stay constant, it's fluid. Maybe and I say this with respect and compassion it was Kake & Adriana's best way in their mind and heart, to make a difficult change, was to do so in one quick fell swoop. Life is not easy. To you and all of us, relax, reflect, and stay open. I feel confident to say most of us watching could not imagine taking on such a monumental life change and creating a building a community from the ground up. That's why I love watching--------- I say----Wow look at that, they are creating a life on their own terms. I am inspired. Thank you for letting us in it means so much. They are legal ownership -in this case not of a public company, but rather of a private farm - they have REAL value, although unlike, say, publicly listed shares, they're not easily liquidated - which is very normal in situations of joint ownership of property.
Kake and Rodrigo were given plots of land to build on and Rodrigo was also given a loan with no hard due date for repayment (often those end up being a gift if the courts are called in to resolve a dispute) for building materials and was also given assistance when possible in building his home...Kake was also given a salary as camera operator at US wage rates, so presumably he could afford to live reasonably well off of that.

I'm impressed with much of what you have said and your choice to say it and the maturity it shows. Certainly, there are pieces of what's going on in this situation and in various areas of your life that aren't public, and as far as I concerned, that your choice to make. You are in charge of what goes out to the world via UA-cam, and my rights are limited, I can watch or not, and a few small options. That's it.
Yes, moving on is important; but it's not like turning a corner or throwing a switch. Regardless of how busy you are you will be revisiting this time repeated, and that is what learning feels like.
One problem I don't think there is any way to resolve is like you said near the end, "this is the way we've set up this community-----" And as generous, giving and caring as you might be, it remains to be your vision, your community. If I or someone else is moving into the community, much of the structure has already been set up, by you and going forward at least for several more years, any changes to the community will primarily be made by the two of you.
There is a structural unbalance to the way things operate in your community and that's completely different then if a group of people had come together and jointly attempted to set up a community. Some places operate that a simple majority rule, and the Quakers try to practice needing to have everyone on board to make changes.
Why would anyone come and invest their time and resources in a community that you could change just on your own? I'm not saying you are planning to do anything like that, but life is full of changes, full of unknowns. Presently, whether you like it or not, the two of you are the blood that holds your community and the farm together. It is very easy to see how you might decide to move away within 4 or 5 years. Where would that leave the farm and the community, both of which are your vision?
Hard stuff to deal with. Be honest, very, very few communities last very long. It is great that you are trying and it's clear that you are putting your hearts into trying to make your vision come to be. Just don't sweep away the truth that you are doing so from a position of power.

You guys are great and on point about the struggles with living with an employee. No matter what you do, even with great communication, there will be some disagreements or resentment. That being said, perhaps Kake and Adriana just wanted/needed something else in their own pursuit of happiness. A lot changes in just a few short years. It seems like it's best to keep that in mind so you can better appreciate those people in our lives and be more present for the short period of time we might have with our friends and family. It hurts when loved ones move away or leave without much warning but it's a huge part of life that is forever changing. It's natural to be sad but dont be sad for long. I'm sure some other amazing people will come into your lives and be living that dream with you before you know it.

Y'all mentioned you have been in corporate America and that you and Kake are on intersecting paths before. I found that most interesting. It's very hard to explain to people who have struggled for food and existence all their lives that more and money are not the keys to happiness. So many of us have to achieve a certain amount of money and stability before we realize there are other keys to happiness and being able to give or walk away from more and money take you closer to God and happiness and human relationships are key. Being able to provide security for ones' offspring is always going to be a hurdle to building the community you are trying to build.

I have never commented on a video before.
I'm from Israel and the concept of communal living is definetly one of the foundations of this country. It is not so rare to find people living as a community here ranging from groups with a shared bank account and property all the way to people who just like to organize social events every month. I have lived in a commune for two years and have been researching this way of life for my future. I think one thing that I have learned is that without a mutual ideology of some sort, it is hard to stay strong as a community in a society that idealizes individuality and money. The way I see it the decision of "paying" someones salary on the farm can instead be considered sharing the farms income (from videos) just as you would share the income from selling cheese or produce. Understanding your ideology about money and sharing will also help people figure out if this is something that they want to be a part of by creating a common language between all of the members. There are many different communities out there and it really helps to research and see how they work in real life.
I send you lots of love and hope that with this journey you both will be able to continue believing in the benefits and beauty of living as a community which outwheigh the hardships and struggles.
I would love to share a more of my knowledge if you would like.
    ❤️
