- 1,000 foot ship American Century had a real fight on its hands going through the ship canal in Duluth, MN. Strong wind and large waves that appeared out of nowhere made it a wild and exciting show for everyone watching! The captain of the ship did a great job in these tough conditions!

I'm 63, both of my parents were born in Duluth, although I have lived in Texas for 44 yrs. I remember going as a kid to Duluth to visit relatives and going to watch the freighters going through the ship channel. My mom had us scatter her ashes over the Lake along the North Shore.
What an amazing story! Thank you for sharing it. The good thing about Texas is you don’t need a snow shovel! All the best my friend.⛴️
@@vibewithmike
Agreed about the shovel.
My family too, Duluth and Superior. There's a real bond with this beautiful lake, now not just for us natives, but thanks to Mike's videos, everyone who tunes in around the world can belong to a new wonderful family. ❤
@susanpugh130 our community is definitely a family of friends that really care about each other and care about these ships. Please don’t miss this video Susan. ua-cam.com/users/liveoJ0-sIWsReU?si=MSvDf__IKUjLisz7
Totally awesome Mike really appreciate the good work you do to bring these wonderful ships to all the boat friends. Keep up the good work Mike.
Thanks a lot, Tim, you have to see this one, I don’t think I’ll ever record a shelf cloud and a rainbow at the same time. Take a look. ua-cam.com/video/-ZgjY_lTN3k/v-deo.htmlsi=S_YtyZFtV53ghI_Q
Mike, this 'Splash Edition' was one of your best videos. I've watched 1,000 of videos over the years, and I'd have to say that this one captures the power and atmosphere of big time ship watching about as well as any! Fantastic job Mike. Really enjoyed what you videoed for us.
Thanks Chuck. I know you like the behind the scenes stuff so it got me to think of walking from a new place. Thanks and happy Easter brother!👍👍👍👍🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
This is my new favorite You Tube channel. Thanks for doing these videos
Rye, what an honor for me to hear that! That means a lot to me. I'm just a regular guy having fun with a camera and ships. No agenda. I have said it before and I'll say it again, I would be out watching the ships and thinking about the same things while looking at these ships without a camera. With the camera, you get to come with. Again, thank you so much for the wonderful comment. I will see you soon Boat Friend!
Thanks again Mike great video can't wait to make the trip up there to watch in person boat friend
Mike, you will love it brother!
Really cool, I liked to see the area around the bridge, thanks for sharing
Thanks for taking time out of your day to watch the video. This was a fun ship to record. All the best to you and yours.
Your visual perspectives are second to none. Always look forward to your productions. A+ my friend.
Sky! Thanks friend. It was fun showing something than the standard canal video. I knew something would happen because the wind was blowing towards the ship. It was pretty cool.
Thanks to you I have a view that this South African might have never seen otherwise! Thank you very much good sir!
Johan, one day I will make it to South Africa. It’s a beautiful country. I have done a lot of research about your cities as well. I will tough out the jet lag to get there someday. I hope you come with me on some of these ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
@@vibewithmike Hopefully you do visit South Africa and I do come to Duluth some day but the world has gone quite nuts lately so we will have to see! I would be glad to subscribe and enjoy these mechanical marvels with you!
Thank you my friend. The weather should get better here in Duluth so I will be out more capturing these wonderful ships for you.

You know that I love ships and the water. One of the places I’d like to visit while in South Africa is Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. I’ve done. I’ve done some research about that location and it just looks so cool.

Karl! Hey, happy Sunday brother. I hope all is well. I’m going to sleep early tonight. It’s been a long week. Thanks again!⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️👍👍👍👍👍
Loved the walk through tour Mike - nice to see the context. Awesome turbulence as she headed out!
Yes, it was a fun video to shoot. I could tell there was a battle brewing because of the wind blowing right at the ship.
Great video Mike. Thank you very much!!
Al, thanks brother. Have a happy Easter my friend.⛴️⛴️⛴️👍👍👍
So,so interesting this morning, thank you for showing us around the area and great information 👍🏼👍🏼

American! How’s it going! Awesome hearing from you. I’m so happy the weather is getting better here!
Morning Mike. Loved the "field trip" . Always good to mix it up a bit. The AC is one of my favorites to watch. Although I have a few that are my favorites. Wow is right on those waves she is creating! Cool handed captain to get through water like that. She is such a gorgeous ship(if ships can be)!! Safe journey to the captain the crew. Awesome job, Mike. As always. Have a great day and I will catch you next time.
The AC is a great ship! I was really surprised by how volatile the water was when she went through. I have a lot of respect for the captain as he navigated that canal with the wind directly at the vessel.⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
I’ve lived in Duluth 69 years and it never gets old seeing that canal when it’s kicking up it’s heel’s thanks Mike.
Greg! I’m someone new to the area. You have logged enough years to really tell the story of the city. How cool! It’s a true blessing to be able to see the ships whenever we want here. Happy Sunday. All the best to you. I hope to see another comment from you soon.
Nice video! Thanks from all our family up in Hibbing!

Great video! I always wanted to see what the otherside of the bridge looks like, thank you!
Thanks QB. Yeah, it’s pretty industrial on the backside of Park Point/Lift Bridge. However, there are many homes there too.
checking in on some of your older videos, Mike. I'm finally on the mend and wanting to catch up on some of your videos... The AC has a beautiful horn and presence. THANKS!!
I’m glad that you are feeling better! That’s so fantastic. I will be going live in less than one hour. A ship I’ve never recorded is coming into Duluth.

Our family will be staying at the South Pier Inn in mid May so I appreciated the little tour in this video. I hope all that snow is gone before we get there! Maybe we'll see you out on the canal. 😊
I hope you enjoy your trip in May. I'm sure Mike will have a comment or two for you soon.
Jodi! I'm so excited you found the channel. I can use another boat friend! You will really enjoy Duluth in May because it will be great weather. Plenty of ships will be out there. You can't get any closer to the action staying at South Pier, good move! Here's a video I did going to different place in Duluth. I think you'll like it. ua-cam.com/video/Slqp0m8rTTU/v-deo.html
@@vibewithmike Just watched it, that was great! I hope we don't have fog...but that would be typical for us. We tend to get clouds and rain on our vacations. We've learned to make the best of it. I see the green gates are open which I'm happy to see - I love to get up close to lighthouses!
August 2015 we visited the UP and went to the Soo Locks at Sault Ste. Marie. So this trip brings us to the other end of the lake at the other end of the season with adult sons rather than teenagers. We're excited for our short getaway! Only 3 nights but the plan is Duluth on Day 1, 61 and hiking on Day 2, and relaxation/lake gazing on Day 3, picking up whatever we missed as we head back through Duluth on our way back home the following day. We're at Beacon Pointe the last 2 nights. Really hoping for no fog so we can see the views from our rooms. 😎

@@vibewithmike yes, I am subscribed! 🙌🥰… I never knew this ship watching was such an activity but I’m hooked on it now! I love the comeraderie and learning about these. Nice shot from the street looking towards the lift bridge. Fire must have felt nice also. Thousand footers making it through the Canal great job by the Capt. Enjoyed the video and BE SAFE OUT THERE!
That fire really helps me on cold days Henry. Then I walk right over to the bridge.
Hey mike I appreciate the effort and time you put into the videos you make. Would love to come up there and see it in person. Keep up the good work
Tim, I happy to hear you like these videos!
Great job for us landlubbers Mike. I would think except for the narrowness of the canal that th AC wouldn’t have much issue with 3 foot breakers with over 12,000 HP and fully loaded. It’s when that big lake roars with what I have seen on some videos it would be tough going. I admire the mariners that perform the task of getting their ships safely to their destination. Havagudun and keep them coming.
@EDLaw-wo5it I still cannot believe there was fog during this video in December. Those beautiful lights really popped in the fog from Bentleyville.
Fun field trip. Cool gas fireplace. Breaking waves and making a white spray was neat. Thanks
Thanks Julie. That fireplace is the best!!!!!!

Are the Lakes fresh or seawater? - please excuse my ignorance. Why do these amazing ships have such blunt Bows?
Regards, Mike Taylor
Mike, thank you so much for your questions. Ask as many questions as you want. Don’t forget, there are so many people that don’t know much about the great lakes and the ships. I’m just a regular guy that hits record on a camera and I’m learning all the time. I love these questions you are asking. Many people will learn from them. I hope you subscribe and come back to this channel my friend. The great lakes are all freshwater. Regarding the shape of the bow. 1000 foot Great Lakes ships were constructed to fit into the lock (i.e. Soo Locks) without room to spare. It is all’s about maximizing the cargo capacity. Look at the photo linked below. You can see how those big ships are molded to the Soo Lock chamber.

Awesome thank you, what you call waves, I call the swell coming down the canal which in turn causes the waves 🌊 glad you didn’t get soaking wet 😂 💕
Hey, wouldn’t you say it’s better seeing the waves vs. the ice?👍⛴️😂
@@vibewithmike Ah Mike, definitely the ice, would be beautiful but dangerous in the moment just like the waves but being unaccustomed to ice would make an awesome experience… Cheers 💕
Always great hearing from you! The fun spring and summer shipping season is beginning for me. No gloves!
Hello there. I’m new to watching these videos but I have become obsessed with these massive ships. I have a question about the bridge. How come it has already been raised but the ship was still a fair amount away from it? Is there a standard amount of time bt the raising and the ships going thru?
Great question and welcome to the channel my friend. The reason why that bridge opens up long before the ship arrives is because it’s all about safety. Think about it as a freight train, these big ships don’t have brakes where they can stop immediately. It takes time for them to stop. If there is an issue with the Bridge mechanically, where it stops going up halfway or something similar. It gives the time to the ship to make them maneuver to avoid colliding with the bridge. I really want you to check out this video if you are new to the channel. It’s a ship that arrived with the snow a few days ago. Take a look. ua-cam.com/video/kDrz3D0TqbM/v-deo.htmlsi=Sqr4RbiDMvIlqVGW

sailed in and out of Duluth harbour many times over the years.......the challenge when there is some wind/waves is very real
Hey Ron, during the summer I watch a lot of the regatta events. Did you participate in any of those? I love watching those sailboats out there.⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️
@@vibewithmike no I worked on the Lakers running in and out of the harbour
liked and subbed ! I have some questions : 1) is that lift bridge the only way on or off that "island" ? 2) why can't ships waiting to load anchor somewhere inside the harbor instead of out in the lake ? Wonderful video ! I am used to watching the live cam feed so this was a great perspective--kind of behind the scenes look. Once on the live chat I said the long/short/short horn was also morse code for the letter "D" , as in "Duluth "- they kind of laughed at me for that. anyway, nice vid !
Sailor, trust me, I will never laugh at you. You taking the time to leave this comment means a lot to me. Yes, the Lift Bridge is the only way onto Park Point which is an island. I have seen ships wait in the harbor, but when you’re talking thousand foot vessels, it’s a lot safer to be out at anchor just outside of the piers on the lake. All the best to you my friend. I hope you join me for the next ship video.⛴️⛴️⛴️
Is the shipping mainly coal? Where are their destination?
There are a variety of different cargo options here in Duluth/Superior. I did some investigating after you asked this question. I found a really cool website that you can click on each port and it’ll tell you more information about the cargo and specifics for each port on the Great Lakes. Thanks for asking this question because I learned some additional information about these other ports because of this. Happy Easter friend! Here’s the link: www.eekwi.org/great-lakes/humans-and-great-lakes/ship-travel-great-lakes
@@vibewithmike Wow, link has great info. Thks Happy Easter
Yeah, I was checking all of those ports out.
@@vibewithmike The dredging part is interesting. 1" of lost draft on a 1000' cargo carrier equates to 270 tons of less cargo. As always, the deeper dives create more rabbit holes. And for a retiree, just more entertainment. Bill Gates couldn't have picked a better name for his OS: Windows.
I see a dredging barge in Duluth and the canal working a lot in the summer. It’s cool looking. We need to get Bill Gates to Duluth! He would love it. ⛴️
Mike, that was a well done video!
Two questions - first, were those waves enough to bounce AC, or does it just plough through level?
And two, it seems like these giants are actually quite quiet. Are they as quiet as they seem in your video?
Ken, awesome observations brother! I have always been so surprised how a downtown city building is essentially laying on its side going by me very quiet. They really are that quiet. Those waves really weren’t bad enough to push that big ship. I think the captain was just a little further to one side than he normally is going through the canal. Thanks for watching friend!
@@vibewithmike thanks Mike! One day I hope to visit the canal to see those giants go by. Maybe this year.

why cut off the bridge lowering? that's cool stuff too
The bridge is fun to watch, but there are so many videos of that bridge going up and down. I have a few of just the bridge itself. The bridge is so amazing because it’s still functions exactly how it did decades and decades ago. Thanks for watching my friend. I really appreciate it.
@@vibewithmike ok thanks i didn't know you had other bridge videos
I think you’ll like this video about the bridge. ua-cam.com/video/4u_qo7D7Zt4/v-deo.html
Why'd they raise the bridge so far in advance? Is that customary?
Hey Wally! Thanks for watching friend! The Aerial Lift Bridge goes up early to ensure there are no mechanical issues, the worry is what if a ship is close to the bridge and it stops going up because of an issue. These huge ships take a long time to stop. The ship could crash into it. It’s a incident prevention measure essentially. 👍⛴️
I think I will have to make the pilgrimage to Duluth in 2025
Let me know if you make it! We can watch one together
Happy Easter!
Same to you Gail.
Nice
Hey, thanks for taking a minute to say this. I appreciate it friend. I hope you come back to check out some more ships! All the best!
Why are they at anchor?
They are waiting for other ships to leave the docks to come in and load.
It’s nice how they put an outhouse on the bow of the vessel. Long way to run back if caught short.
That ship with 80,000 tonnes of coal has about the same amount of energy output as 29 kilograms of Uranium 235 in a Nuclear reactor , something one person could carry relatively easily ! The Uranium volume for 29kg is approx 1.5 liters or 1/3rd of a shoe box .

Spent a lot of time great city. That bridge is up way too early , no ??
Drums! Thanks for the question my friend. I found the exact answer to this question online. I hope you join me for future ship videos. Take a look below. Happy Sunday.
Here are quotes from the article and the article is linked below.
For the biggest vessels, the bridge must start its ascent while they're 1.5 miles out.
"For them to stop is pretty much impossible, said Campbell. "It takes forever for them to get that thing slowed down and reversed, we have to give them plenty of time to maneuver if something happens."
Traffic can bring Canal Park to a stop and back up traffic all the way to Interstate 35 in the middle of the summer during a long lift.
"You feel kind of bad," Campbell said. "But contrary to what a lot of people believe, we're here for the boats, not the car traffic, so the boats always have priority."
The ship right-of-way into the harbor was the deal the city made with the United States Coast Guard when it first built the bridge. www.mprnews.org/story/2016/08/05/duluth-aerial-lift-bridge-operator-day-life

Jim, thanks for the common brother. Yeah, I don’t know, now that you say that I have noticed a few variations of lifeboats. And you’re right, what if there is terrible weather out on the lake and they had to use it? Thanks for watching man!👍👍⛴️⛴️

👍👍👍👍👋👋👋👋👋
Noah's ark was half the length with plenty room for a vast selection of animals.
At least she got no "canal rash"
Good point! The captain did a good job. Props to the captain!⛴️👍
"Big Fight" is too click-baity. This was a routine, every-day departure in Duluth.
I respect your opinion, but when I see wind blowing towards the ship and some waves kicking up, I think it’s a fight. I want you to know that I appreciate you watching. I hope you’re having a wonderful Tuesday. All the best.
More like the big girl gave the lake a beating. Even Superior's not always like this.
👍⛴️
I'm guessing a person fishing there can get suck under near ship
Yeah, it wouldn’t be a smart idea to fish in the canal as a ship is coming! You might not catch a fish, but you will catch an ambulance if you did that.😂👍⛴️
Sir, you must be new to this area as we all have seen much, much, worst !
I agree but for that day it was the worst. Thanks for watching friend. Just trying to have some fun out there with the ships!
The side of it looks like a prison wall.
You know Shelley, that is a fun but true statement. I'm going to be thinking about that the next time I see this vessel. I appreciate you dropping a comment. All the best to you.
The South Pier Inn looks like a great place to stay if visiting Duluth. Then again, it looks like there is a handful of nice looking places along the harbor basin to stay at. 🏨
It definitely is a great place to stay if a person loves ships. Take a look at what’s coming possibly next week to Duluth. It should make for some cool videos.
Awesome boat!I like the look of the Edmund and the Arthur better with the 2 pilot houses or cabin towers one on each end!but jeez that is a massive vessel !
Rob, these vessels are huge man. They’re awesome.
