Rouge waves are the ones that come from a different direction right? what happens if a large rogue wave comes from the side, do you try to turn into it or do you just hold on and pray?
If we see if we head into it. They can be quite common in bad weather so we have to keep a good lookout and head into the really big rogue waves while getting hit side on by the normal waves that are just big. We then have to turn back into the general direction of the storm until the next one comes. Not so easy at night time.
Sorry to hear you’re no longer going to be at sea. I think I speak for everyone who’s ever watched one of your videos, thank you because we enjoy the hell out of them. You and the other crew experienced some stuff very few other humans ever will. Giving us an insider look on life aboard a rescue vessel was eye opening and I’ll be damned if it wasn’t interesting as fuck. As a guy in southern Louisiana who has had family work on offshore drills in the Gulf of Mexico for decades we know how important you guys really are! I want to say Cheers from the States!!

Especially the earlier videos where I was allowed to film the oil workers up close. I know that they appreciated the view from the other side, as did their families at home. I hope to continue to film storms but they will also be restricted in content.

I’ve been out in my little 23 ft ski boat before and we’d come up waves on river or the gulf where it seemed to be best to hit them at a slight angle vs straight on. I take it, that is wrong?? What is the best way to take on waves??
I’m my experience it is always best to take the biggest waves head on at the slowest speed that maintains steerage. If you take them at an angle, the wave can push your bow and cause your vessel to go beam-on. That always upsets the cook.
freeking nuts! are you guys all on Valium? So chilled and LAUGHING?? :) :) crazy buggers! What size is this boat? I think my 45mtr yacht would NEVER live through this. Those waves would go strait over the top

We have a Stability Curve which shows how far a ship can lean over before it capsizes. As far as waves go, it’s not so much the size that caused the damage but how steep it is and whether on not it is breaking.

We try and steer directly into the main direction of the largest waves but they tend to come from every direction at once. Since we are looking after a couple of oil platforms, we try to stay within 10 miles of them. This involves turning the ship every few hours and going broadside on to the waves. Careful timing is required. A single wave would not turn us over but two together could.
I just got done watch 'Life on Board in Stormy Weather', is it that one? Gosh the simplest things to do look so tough with these big waves! Thank you for sharing! I shall watch all the videos you have uploaded and share them with family and friends. Best of luck to all of you :)

It's amazing isn't it James? A year after I filmed this we smashed two bridge windows in the space of a few days. It was not the windows that failed but the studs in the window frames. In the course of a storm we would be hit by these size waves several times a day for two-three weeks and, as I'm sure you know, a cubic meter of water ways 1 tonne. That's s hell of s lot of weight being thrown at those windows. However, the tiniest of taps with a hammer and they shatter like, well........glass I suppose?
Bigwavemaster1 That's probably true. Still, I think they must use some very high quality plexiglass when making "bulletproof glass". I am at least willing to bet that they don't use regular glass for windows such as these. I don't think normal glass could handle the high winds, in addition to the water spray from large waves. By the way, Thanks for posting this awesome video!
Our windows are certainly not normal glass. They are quarter inch toughened safety glass. The same as you would get in a car only much thicker. Thanks of the comments. I make a film every trip showing the crew in their daily lives. I'm at sea now and shall be uploading the next in a couple of weeks. Hope you've subscribed? ;)
Awesome! But i got some Questions: Will you get wet inside the ship? I mean at the position you were filming this! And does it happen, that the glass breaks from the waves? Also, do you have a seatbelt or sth. like that to secure you??
Sorry for the late reply but I’ve only just seen this comment. No, we don’t get we unless a window breaks which has happened once. We don’t use seat belts. There’s been some big waves since this was filmed 😳 ua-cam.com/video/y0-wNcGwjvs/v-deo.html

Talk about increased pucker factor. That's some scary stuff. I served on a US submarine and knew waves like that existed up top because at 150 depth we would get tossed out of our bunks. I sure was glad to be under them and not riding them.
@@Bigwavemaster1 feet. I was on a ballistic missile submarine. While on launch alert status we had to maintain radio contact with sub command in case we had to launch. 150 ft was the max depth to maintain that contact. In the north Atlantic it wasnt uncommon for us to take 20 to 30 degree rolls when it was nasty up top. Couldnt look out a window and see them coming either. I really miss it.
@@Bigwavemaster1 we did have parameters of what area we had to stay in for launching reasons but we could move about freely in that area. The issue was, if we had weather reports of sea direction they weren't always that accurate (this was the mid 80s) and like I said earlier it wasnt like we could look out a window and see the sea direction. About the time we knew there were large waves they had already rolled us around pretty good. If we weren't on 'alert ststus' we could go deeper but I've felt major rolls at 500 ft. Can you imagine the sea state if you are fealing it at 500ft deep?
FOO DOG RACING A very interesting new perspective. A couple of years ago I took part in a BBC podcast where they were discussing building floating cities. My point was that anything larger than a rowing boat had to be able flex. It was the bend or break principle. You can be 100s of miles inside the ice cap and still feel the rise & fall of the ice. Not sure they all believed me.
Something like that. We go as slow as possible. We are trying to stay in the same place so the slower we go the slower we hit the waves and the fewer times we have to turn the boat around. Turning is the most dangerous time.

Not so easy at night time.
yeah that sounds exhausting, thanks for the reply

Do you have to steer directly into a wave? If you go broadside will it turn the vessel over?
We try and steer directly into the main direction of the largest waves but they tend to come from every direction at once.
Since we are looking after a couple of oil platforms, we try to stay within 10 miles of them. This involves turning the ship every few hours and going broadside on to the waves. Careful timing is required. A single wave would not turn us over but two together could.

I have to wonder what kind of glass that is, to withstand all that pressure in the last clip.
I am surprised these are not made of a material like plexiglass?
That's a good point. Plexiglass marks too easily and would make it increasingly difficult to see out of.

We film some of the largest waves ever caught on camera.
We work with 2 North Sea oil platforms that can accurately measure wave height so no guessing or exaggeration.

How big is the boat in feet?
She’s been scrapped now but about 150ft.
There’s been some big waves since this was filmed 😳

Talk about increased pucker factor. That's some scary stuff. I served on a US submarine and knew waves like that existed up top because at 150 depth we would get tossed out of our bunks. I sure was glad to be under them and not riding them.
FOO DOG RACING That’s interesting. I’ve always said waves are like icebergs, 75% under the surface.
What’s the 150 line? Feet, meters or fathom?
@@Bigwavemaster1 feet. I was on a ballistic missile submarine. While on launch alert status we had to maintain radio contact with sub command in case we had to launch. 150 ft was the max depth to maintain that contact. In the north Atlantic it wasnt uncommon for us to take 20 to 30 degree rolls when it was nasty up top. Couldnt look out a window and see them coming either. I really miss it.
FOO DOG RACING Could the Commander head the sub into the direction of swell? Would that have made any difference?
Awesome, I think I asked before but what was your speed over the ground in that lot? About 1 knot maybe?
Something like that. We go as slow as possible. We are trying to stay in the same place so the slower we go the slower we hit the waves and the fewer times we have to turn the boat around.
Turning is the most dangerous time.
what height waves are we look at here ? average?
flick24 According to the platform we were working with they were averaging 17 meters. Maximum was 27
@@Bigwavemaster1 scary ! go to have guts to do this
