I'm a Brit and spent from the 1970s travelling the world constructing tunnels, one was in 94 a tunnel under the St Clair river from Sarnia Ont. to Huron Mich. Left UK just after new year and landed in a snow storm. Moved into an apartment maybe 500m back from the river. So had a birds eye view of the Lakers passing up and down. Saw the first one through after the spring thaw, the skipper wearing a top hat and a tree lashed to the mast. In the summer spent days off sailing on Lake Huron. I'd seen Lakers moored in the port with bubbler keep the stern gear free from ice. A great 18 month contract, after that I worked in warmer climbs enjoyed them so much I've retired to Vietnam.

First trip to sea late 70s was up the Great Lakes on the MV Federal Clyde. I was only 16 and a galley boy. Now I’m nearly 60 and chief 👨‍🍳in the Merchant Navy. Sadly all the British ships and shipping companies have all gone. Miss the good old days of the cargo boats tramping around the world. Had some great runs ashore in some fantastic places. ❤️ my job & the 🌊🌊🌊 👨‍🍳👨‍🍳😉

If you think they look big here try sharing Greys Reef Passage with one, when your in a 35 foot sailboat. That’s a passage up in northern Lake Michigan that most boats going to Lake Huron from south have to take. When you share it with one of those big boys it sure makes the passage seem smaller than it is.

Years ago they used to come in earlier. But in the recent years they have been extending their season. Thanks for Watching!!

The horn signal (1 long, 2 short) means it is going to make a port side turn.

I'd love to know, how in the hell you keep a huge boat like that in the center of that skinny channel?

She has a bow thruster to steer if need be. Thanks for Watching!!

@@DoorCountyDronebyMarkEvenson So how did they do this 50-60 years ago before bow thrusters? I guess that's what I'm asking. I've watched several of these old B&W iron ship vids and they really shove them into some tight spots. Very cool.

Very, very carefully. A helmsman who concentrates the whole time.

@@derrith1877 Concentration I get. But when the wind whips up and you're trying to push the bow to the left, you're actually pushing the stern to the RIGHT. And doing it in these tight channels, not out on the lake. Simply amazing.

I wonder how the deck crews manage to sail by just using binoculars for that long long huge cargo ship. Probably a front hull camera has been installed for long range vision especially where small fishing boats are at risk being hit accidentally during night time.

Is the current moving the whole time just can’t see it because of the ice or does the ship force the water to flow through that channel?

Would somebody explain why people record landscape videos in the portrait mode losing two thirds of the subject they are recording. Interesting comparison between the Mark Evenson proper shot and the guy standing in front of him.
