First, I'd like to send out a big thanks to the American Steamship Company (ASC) for inviting Vibe with Mike to visit the American Century. I know this fulfills a dream Mike never thought would be possible. This was all made possible by Kevin and David from ASC corporate in New York. Again, thanks so much fellows for helping spur this unique partnership. Together with Mike's channel, many many folks from all over the world will learn more about ASC and Great Lakes shipping. Mike from ASC did a fantastic job leading the tour of the American Century. He answered numerous questions and provided neat insights into the deck operations of this massive footer. It's obvious to me Mike enjoys his job and represents his company in a very professional manner. I really enjoyed learning from Mike and look forward to more of his tours in the future. And a big shout-out and thanks to chief steward Jennifer. I agree with Mike in that the galley looks so clean and organized. Geez....I'm hungry right now just thinking about all those yummy dishes!! And much of it home-made. Thanks so much Jennifer for describing your important role on the American Century. Good food helps make for a happy crew. As one of Mike's Boat Friends, I can't wait to learn more and more from these types of onboard videos. There is no question they help personalize the Great Lakes shipping industry. Yes the ships are awesome, but without the ASC folks like Mike and Jennifer the ships wouldn't move....they wouldn't haul, and they wouldn't have a reason to salute with their horns. Safe travels to the Captain and crew of the American Century.
It’s a dream come true for all of us to go onboard this famous Great Lakes 1000-foot ship! An amazing crew and a wonderful tour. It was amazing! There’s much more to come too! The fun is just getting started for all of us.👍⛴️
Congrats on getting onboard. It makes me laugh when you see the ladder gangway. These ships are at these ports so often it’s amazing they don’t have a better gangway. That they use. Is there a part 2 coming of the parts you didn’t show?
I have so much respect for the people on those ships. Thank you for taking time out of your day to watch this video. Did you see the icebreaker from the other day? ua-cam.com/video/SmyZkWNffN0/v-deo.htmlsi=SzZTQHf0zFaiFEJ6
I’m glad you found the channel friend, welcome! ABC News did a great story about this UA-cam channel and the Boat Friends community that’s part of it, showing just how much fun we have exploring and talking about ships. I hope you subscribe (zero cost) and come back to have some fun with these ships. ABC News story: ua-cam.com/video/X1fWdiuszqE/v-deo.htmlsi=w0Rwsr9UuHfy2RqC
@@vibewithmike Often, when a ship is entering the canal entering the harbor you can actually hear them unlocking the hatches. If you get a next time on the deck of a ASC ship and get a chance to talk to a crew member a close up of how the hatch locks work would be so cool That Chef sure does prepare some great sounding meals!
@KenHartman152 there will be many awesome videos like this coming. I promise I will get many other things, including the pilot house, engine room, and other things that we want to see. I didn’t want it get everything in one video so we could have other videos that are just as fun with different aspects of a ship.
@@vibewithmike I use to watch a channel called "Joe Franta ship" he was a person that hired on to work as a crew member of ocean freighter ships and he would go into detail about all the various maintenance jobs they also did on the ships.
At the age of 86, I still recall my fondest memories of being on the lake freighter SS Huron. One of the 4 Wyandotte Chemicals ships. My father, Captain Clement F. Morreau asked me, as a teenager, if I would Ike to have a trip with him. It was the greatest thing I have ever enjoyed. The crew, the food, I covered every square inch of the ship, they taught me ow to steer the ship and I was able to steer from the Huron river it ship in lake Huron to he marker at Alpena Michigan and only varied 2 degrees form port to starboard. I even shoveled coal and many other adventures. I loved the bum boat in Toledo, the way the loaded the coal. The fresh air out in the lakes. I could go on and on. At one time or another my Dad was Captain of all four of their ships.
I bet it’s cool that you come from Maritime family. Paul, I really appreciate you taking time to tell us this wonderful group of stories. It really means a lot that you took the extra time to wait a break, like this for all of us. All the best to you. Your dad was the captain on four those ships
Boat Friends, I saw firsthand how Mike B. and the other American Steamship Company employees interacted. It seriously was like a family reunion. Everybody truly cared about each other. I saw a lot of smiles! I’ve only been around a few companies in my lifetime that you could just feel that they care about each other like this. It was extremely impressive. I was blown away by the true camaraderie these employees had.
It’s my absolute pleasure being able to show you the ship. It was so cool to learn about the ship from our friend Mike, I really had a fun time and I’m so glad that you took time on your Friday night to check this out as well.
@elizabethw4519 I definitely wanted to make this educational and really show what the ship is like inside, nobody has seen the American century, this 1000-foot Great Lake ship like this before on video. It was beyond a pleasure to be able to record this and show this to you and our friends.⛴️👍
Mike, no question this will be your most impactful video to date. Folks, I got a sneak preview.....and trust me you'll want to watch this one. The start of a future series up close and personal. I'm so anxious to start a long string of comments about this video!
@@vibewithmike During the premiere, I asked in the chat about if the people on ship walked around much on the deck of the ship while it's out on the open water. Had to pause the premiere & restart, so I didn't see if my question was answered or not! Thanks!
@dbdouglas great question, the answer is yes, they are out there a lot on the deck. In the winter, they’re out there shoveling the deck and making sure there’s no ice buildup on the ship in the middle of the great lakes.
Mike, I am so looking forward with excitement to seeing this video of Life Aboard a 1000' Great Lake Ship! This is something all of us have wanted to do. And now through You with the graciousness of Kevin & David of the American Steamship Company we can!!! ⚓🚢⚓
I thought about you and all of our friends as I went up that ladder to board the ship. I really did! It made my heart happy. We are just getting started with the fun and adventures on these ships. It was really fun talking to the chief Cook as she talked about all the favorite meals and showed us some grab and go snacks for the crew on the ship.👍⛴️
Jim, I’m thrilled that you enjoyed the video. It was a blast being on the ship and being able to provide all of this educational information about the ship to everybody.
Very interesting video. I've never been aboard a Ore freighter before. When you're on deck it gives you a great perspective of just how big these ships are. Awesome job. Keep up the good work!
Jim, thank you so much for the wonderful comment. I really appreciate you taking time out of your Friday to watch this video. Maybe you’ll subscribe and come back for some future friendship videos?
Hi Mike boat friends ! Excellent ! Excellent! Ship tour ! You took a lot of people on board a ship for their first time today ! What i noticed was the trimming lights and the skill of the guys loading the ship ! moving the chute back and forth to keep the ship on an even keel Looked like there might of been just a little list to starboard going out the channel ? unless it is camera refraction ? Could be an army of guys down below shoveling like crazy to level it out again ! They can also level it out with water in the ballast tanks on the one side Something to look for in the future ! when a ship comes and goes checkthe trimming lights to see if it is leaning over or not ? They also trim fore and aft The moden galley on a new ship is impressive i noticed rails sort of cafeteria style to slide food trays on The ship is so big it hardly ever moves would take a lot to get stuff rooling around. Have a great day
I really liked the STP Safety Program. It really hit a chord with me. Drilling that important concept into all crew members certainly has helped avoid issues I bet. No room onboard for uncertainty.
@@chuckg6039 Those signs are for not only safety but also orientation Of crew rotation a new crew member or anybody comming on board Mike could find out how often crews rotate ? At lower lakes in the past the crew would work 90 days get. 16 days off then switch ships Tho each ship is the same each ship has it own differences By rotating the crew they become proficient on all the different ships and if needled can be moved seamlessly from one ship to another
Hey Mike and All THE GLOBAL BOAT FRIEND NATION. Looks like a beautiful day in Dtown as was here in Bismarck albeit a little windy. What a great day for all of he Boat Friends thanks to he great folks and fellow Boat Friends with ASC to allow us to come on board. You really get a true perspective as to how big these vessels are, and easy to see they are over 3 Football fields long from bow to Stearns. Interesting to see the coal is really pulverized down, and to see the loading system which is much different than the system used for taconite pellets. The iron ore pellets are basically dropped down chutes by gravity into the cargo hold. The coal,is loaded using a Buhler type system using conveyor belts which the operator on board drops the coal straight down into the hold. Cargill B was the first elevator on the harbor to use the Buhler system for, loading grain, and now I see they are doing the same for coal. This coal comes from Colstrip Montana, and two unit trains per day come through Bismarck each day going to Duluth. Looking down the Bow of the vessel while loading I see the old Elevator S, but is do not know what it is called now but I spent a lot of time working in that elevator when i lived there. Also interesting was the Galley, and the cook was proud of her station as she should be. Sounds like she really tries to keep things changing so no one gets bored, but there are some favorites as she mentioned. This was a great video Mike, really got to see a whole different side of the equation for sure. Three long and two short for ASC for allowing us to come aboard, and safe passage for the good ship and crew, as well as a safe shipping season. Mike, what can I say, you really Brought the Thunder this time big fella!!!!
Thanks Cat, I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Mike, your passion, dedication, attention to detail has brought people together and you worked hard and with consistency for our entertainment and seriously you affected us in a very unique and positive way with your enthusiasm. That wouldn’t have been a great community without a great captain, as you are. This experience is so much deserved and I wish you to have many more experiences like this one. Thanks to the ASC for letting you bring us on the American Century, a great ship indeed. As an alpine girl I can only dream about ships and your channel is a window to the world I like. Thank you, Mike. You’re such a cool guy! ⛴️🌊🗻🇺🇸🇮🇹
My friend from Italy, I really appreciate you writing this comment. I like your terminology, Alpine girl, I love that! It was so fun to be able to provide this tour to you and all of our friends. I was thrilled in particular when I was able to speak with the cook, Jennifer, she is so awesome and loves her job and you know that a translates to awesome food for the crew. It’s definitely the start of something new. Being able to go on a ship is a true honor and not many people get to do it. The best part of this, I got to bring you and all of our other friends along with. I thought about each of you along the way During the tour.
Hey boat friend great video the tour of the ship love it close up great shots real clear sound is beautiful great video would love to be able to go on one of them even better working on one Mike from Peoria Illinois thanks you and everyone involved in this video
What a special trip to actually be escorted onto the 1,000 footer American Century, to see it being loaded, it is enormous! And also to meet crew members. Thank you Mike!
I had such a delightful time with Mike on the ship. It was a blast. I definitely want you to see the oldest ship on the Great Lakes that I was able to record. Check it out. ua-cam.com/video/NxdZjXDKTAg/v-deo.htmlsi=MB8vlNPLm9eukHdb
What a great video Mike. I recently was honored to tour a CSL ship a few weeks ago. Although I'm not jealous you got a tour, but very jealous you got a tour with Safety Officer Mike. What a great opportunity. Keep it up. Maybe one day I can join one of your toon rides ..😊
I think that’s so cool you were able to tour that vessel! Mike, he is a true professional and is well known in industry for being the best at what he does! Being able to tour this ship with him and have him explain everything, it’s unbelievable and super educational for people. This video was so fun to record and to be able to put this out for people to see behind-the-scenes now on about a 1000 foot Great Lakes ship
I hadn't noticed, the VWM channel passed 30k subs, Mike!! That's flippin' awesome. I think you'll hit 50k subs by the end of the year. And this video is going to be one the best yet. I can't wait to tour the AC!! Thank you for doing what you do for us.
Thanks pal. Honestly, subs don’t matter to me. I would be putting these videos out if there were no subs or views. I love this hobby and the ships. This ship tour videos was so fun and there no video like this online showing the ship American Century like this. I’m so happy because I was able to record this tour for you and our other Boat Friends!⛴️👍
Mike, this is a fantastic public education boat fan video. Congratulations! Thank you to ASC for allowing the rest of us aboard the American Century. Yours is a vital transportation link for the safety and security of America's infrastructure. Safe travels always.

Fantastic video, thank you for sharing your time aboard the American Century with us Mike. Looking forward to my first trip to Duluth in September. Again thank you!
Wow!! Impressive! Thanks to all who was involved in making this happen. Im from North Carolina and have been obsessed with these amazing ships. Some day, I hope to visit Duluth. ❤
Thank you for such a nice comment! I hope your Saturday is off to a good start. Very cool tour Mike. Love it and hope to see some more... thanks for the shot of the Fast Eddy... my all time fave laker with, IMO the best horn on the Great Lakes. I REALLY hope she gets back to work soon.
Happy Friday! It’s great to see you! Being able to go on this ship was incredible and I brought you and all of our Boat Friends with. Thank you for being here to watch it!👋🙏⛴️👍
Great video Mike, this was totally different but worth it. Thanks for sharing. These workers really deserve praise for the hard work they do. Again thank you. I pray for a safe journey on their journey
And you keep up the great work! Wonderful photography of all the ships coming into Duluth! People need to check you out, just Google his name and find his Facebook. Fantastic photography of the ships.
Thanks sooo much Mike and the ASC!! Mike, when you did a 360 degree spin on the deck of the American Century, I expected to see a film crew tagging behind you...your videos look so professional!! The train that we saw leaving the Superior Midwest Energy Terminal dock was one of 6 or 7 that were needed to fill this massive ship. That is between 750 and 800 rail cars of coal...if my assumptions are right. I'd love to hear from our ASC Boat Friends on how close my estimate is. Thanks again, Mike!
Jeremy, thank you so much for that donation! Thank you so much for supporting the channel and being interested in watching these big ships. I’m glad you could watch the tour of this 1000 foot ship.
@jeremycox571 good question Jeremy, the way to become a member is you have to use your desktop, not a mobile device, on a desktop computer you’ll see the join button on the main homepage. You click on that and then it takes you through the process.
This was awsome! One really don’t understand how big these ships are until one are onboard one of them! Thank’s Mike, Mike and Jennifer for this tour😃👍!
Happy Friday to all the Boat Friends. This video wil open a new chapter in the Vibe with Mike channel. I for one just can't wait to watch it! And of course, interact with others in the Comment section.
It’s really fun going inside of these ships. I want you to check out this ship from the other day. ua-cam.com/video/s7YxMz9EEI8/v-deo.htmlsi=AZL0Rn2_urlOeber

The crew on the American century are all professionals and they take to work very serious. It was such a delightful time to see these people doing a great job. Thanks for watching this tour video Ed
What a wonderful opportunity you had, and that we then had through viewing your video! You must have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of that tour. Thanks to the company, and to the personnel for allowing you to go aboard and film. Now when we see these videos of passing ships we will have a plethora of new things to envision and to think about, as we were actually on board of a freighter!
Our tour guide, Mike, he is so fantastic and extremely knowledgeable and a big-time leader in the industry when it comes to safety, security and compliance for these big ships
It’s really fun going behind the scenes of these ships, rarely do we get to see what it’s like regarding life on board, this was a really cool way to see what people do on these 1000 foot ships
Seriously, that was just so cool! What a vessel! as an English ex deckhand I just love the whole American marine tradition, but particularly the great lakes vessels😊,absolutely fascinating!

Chad! The dream has come true for all of us. And I want you to know, the fun is just getting started with these ships! We are going to learn a lot more and many more of these ships! Read the description to give you a little more information. ⛴️👍
What a great, informative briefing on the ship’s operations. Thanks for including the train shot but I need to correct your statement about the “freight train departing”. The train you shot was actually a loaded coal train arriving at the coal dock. Arriving, loaded trains go around the coal storage area on the outer loop then transition to the inside loop on the west side of the facility. The coal cars are rotary-dumped, several at a time, back on the east side. The train you shot is BNSF train C SCMSUD. (Coal loads from Spring Creek Mine, MT to Superior, WI docks. Three trains per day depart Spring Creek on this route to supply Detroit Edison. The empty trains return as symbol E SUDSCM. Thanks again for the great tour and ALL your great videos.
OK, good to know about the train. I’m kind of a novice when it comes to trains. However, thank you so much for taking time to watch this ship tour video, my friend.👍⛴️
@@vibewithmikeHey Mike thanks for the quick reply. Take a look at Google Earth’s image of the coal dock and it makes sense. In addition to the great ship action there, you have an outstanding railroad museum as well. Hoping for your continued blessings!
Thanks, Mike! Super cool! That ship looked super long when you were walking down the stern side. Just shows how huge these ships are. Glad you had great weather for your "field trip."

My son said "It is instant you hit the button eveything stops ! if you fell in you might get your leg broke ! It's a long way down !" Keeping coal wet water drains to the bottom they pump it out Have a great day !

Hello once again my, and many others, friend. I'm going to use the words double jealous right now because I am not sure of another word that says such as to how I, and I'm sure many others, are feeling of you. This is truly amazing because we get a behind the scenes look at what the workers of the American Century, and many other ships, do, and not only that but the icing on the cake of what different parts of the ships do, all for us. If I've not mentioned it before I love trains and airports by them, but what you've shown, ships and trains, reaches a whole other level, and it tells me that you listen to and know what your friends like; hand shake and thanks on that. Noow I tell you what would be awesome, to be a guest of Mike and be able to eat in the galley of what I'm sure is great prepared food. This country needs more videos of people like Mike and Jennifer working behind the scenes to know what they do, but it also gets them known, she seems very happy to have been made known like this, kudos again to you my friend. The view you had on the deck I'm sure was great. My wife and I went to Charleston, SC for our 25th wedding anniversary and toured the USS Yorktown CVS-10 AirCraft Carrier, and it was exciting, so I know that experience. To be short, BIG THANKS to you once again for another greta video and The ASC for allowing such. Thanks to all the men & women on these ships that work so that we have. Many happy and safe voyages Jennifer.

Congrats on getting onboard. It makes me laugh when you see the ladder gangway. These ships are at these ports so often it’s amazing they don’t have a better gangway. That they use. Is there a part 2 coming of the parts you didn’t show?
@thereissomecoolstuff even better, we are going to be seeing other ships as well
This is amazing
Very cool! What an opportunity to see how these hardworking people live.
I have so much respect for the people on those ships. Thank you for taking time out of your day to watch this video. Did you see the icebreaker from the other day? ua-cam.com/video/SmyZkWNffN0/v-deo.htmlsi=SzZTQHf0zFaiFEJ6

Thank You American Steamship Company & Mike for a fantastic look at life aboard a 1000' Great Lakes Freighter Ship!!! ⚓🚢⚓
It was a true pleasure being onboard of that ship, and I want to think all of our friends at American steamship company
@KenHartman152 I have watched his videos. He’s actually on a great lake ship and one of his videos.
This is a whole life I have never seen before.. So interesting
It is very interesting. The people that have a career on the water I have so much respect for.

Ship, crew, Lake Superior, boat friends boat, aerial lift bridge. All of the things!
This was an unbelievable tour of 1000 foot ship. Onboard the ship!⛴️👍

Mike, no question this will be your most impactful video to date. Folks, I got a sneak preview.....and trust me you'll want to watch this one. The start of a future series up close and personal. I'm so anxious to start a long string of comments about this video!
Chuck, this ship is absolutely huge in person, standing on top of the deck.
@@vibewithmike And the crew must verify hatch covers remain secure and there is always equipment maintenance and cleaning the decks of ore and coal.

Now this was a fantastic film... thanks Mike for the on board experience. It was watched with friends relaxing in Casco Bay...Portland, Maine.
What i noticed was the trimming lights and the skill of the guys loading the ship !
moving the chute back and forth to keep the ship on an even keel
Looked like there might of been just a little list to starboard going out the channel ?
unless it is camera refraction ?
Could be an army of guys down below shoveling like crazy to level it out again !
They can also level it out with water in the ballast tanks on the one side
Something to look for in the future !
when a ship comes and goes
checkthe trimming lights to see if it is leaning over or not ?
They also trim fore and aft
The moden galley on a new ship is impressive i noticed rails sort of cafeteria style to slide food trays on
The ship is so big it hardly ever moves would take a lot to get stuff rooling around.
Have a great day
I really liked the STP Safety Program. It really hit a chord with me. Drilling that important concept into all crew members certainly has helped avoid issues I bet. No room onboard for uncertainty.
@@chuckg6039
Those signs are for not only safety but also orientation
Of crew rotation a new crew member or anybody comming on board
Mike could find out how often crews rotate ?
At lower lakes in the past the crew would work 90 days get. 16 days off then switch ships
Tho each ship is the same each ship has it own differences
By rotating the crew they become proficient on all the different ships and if needled can be moved seamlessly from one ship to another
@@carllafrance5510 it's an attitude and mind set....and a good one. If in doubt, don't just blindly forge ahead.

Thanks for this great comment. We sure watched that coal being loaded up close !!

We can see that Jen enjoys her job and is pleased to keep the Crew eating well.
Mike, this is one of the BEST! I’m always telling people to look for you as you do such a Grand job of reporting on the Ships.
Fair winds and Following Seas to the Captain and Crew of the American Century!
Mike Briner is a true professional and he really knows what he’s doing. He really cares about the employees at ASC and I could feel it every time he talk to me about the wonderful employees that his company.

Greg, I really thought about you and all of the Boat friends while I was on that boat. Every step I took, I was thinking about what the video would be like when I made it for all of you. Again, if it wasn’t for our community, this channel would be just a regular ship channel.
Great video Mike. What an awesome experience to have. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us Boat Friends. Take care, have fun and God Bless you my friend!!!❤😊

Hi Mike I was talking with my son who use to work on self unloadres
He said
"They keep coal wet to keep the dust down and it doesn't combust ( self ignite and cause a fire )
They run the train cars under a shower to soak the coal "
It has come a long way since the olden days
Back in the old and days when they burned coal to make steam
ships would have fires self ignite in their bunkers
The titanic left the dock with a bunker fire
On the original self unloadeers hatch 17 was the safety hatch if you fell in it would take that long to stop the track in the bottom before you reached the cargo elevator at the end
I asked him about hatch 17 being the luckey hatch ?
My son said
"It is instant you hit the button eveything stops !
if you fell in you might get your leg broke !
It's a long way down !"
Keeping coal wet water drains to the bottom they pump it out
Have a great day !
Fan-freaking-tastic!!
Thanks so much, Mike.
If you ever get a chance to do something like this again, a visit to the bridge would be sessions if they'd agree to it.
I definitely will have the opportunity to do this again with this and other ships with ASC. I will get the bridge and other details of the ship. I wanted to give a nice appetizer video so we can have fun moving forward.
That was very cool to be on board one of the 1,000 foot ships from ASC. It was great to meet Mike and Jennifer. Great video!
Thanks for watching the ship tour, my friend
Wow, wow, Mike, that video about the A C is truly amazing. I'm just getting to watch it now ,Monday, 21.30 pm. It's great to be able to catch up. Thanks Mike.
I’m so darn happy that you are able to watch this video. I thought about you and all of the boat friends as I recorded this. I couldn’t believe it. I had to pinch myself. Take a look at this live stream from yesterday when you have a chance. ua-cam.com/users/liveAp627M46GYM?si=znGp2J9i4M4bj4F6
Excellent video and the weather was perfect!
I’m glad that you pointed that out, yes, it was blue sky, and beautiful weather. It couldn’t have been any better to be able to take a tour of a 1000 foot Great Lakes ship.
I’m an eejit. I just zoomed in on the Harbor Lookout & saw all those areas marked with the letter P, thanks to you, i know what they mean, cuz you made a point of showing me where visitors park while watching ships. Thanks.
I’m glad you were able to see it. That makes me happy.
A great big heartfelt THANK YOU! to the American Steamship Company for allowing us via Vibe With Mike to tour your wonderful vessel. It is very much appreciated!

Can this ship go through big waves easily?
@MikeAmerica219 it actually is a very powerful ship and can make it through big waves.
Great video Mike.

So fun. I couldn’t believe when she said pizza as a favorite dinner. Love it-my fav too. Thank you Mike and American Steamship Company. Great actually being on board the ship up close.
Rose, and you know that pizza is really good!
Oh my goodness, this has to be one of the coolest comments I’ve read! So much information and so much positivity! Tim, there wasn’t one second that I was on the ship that I didn’t think about you and all of the other Boat friends. I thought about what you would want to see. I thought about that you would want to hear answered. It was a delight to talk to the chief Cook on the ship as well. That was really fun. Don’t worry, there are many more opportunities and things we will do with these ships on board. I really appreciate you taking time out of your Saturday to leave such a great comment.
Great video!!! Thanks! Enjoy your videos and all the commentary.
Dennis, that makes me very happy. Thank you for taking an extra moment to leave a comment. It means a lot. All the best you on a Friday night.
