First I have to thank Ian for not only finding a club that fits me, but for somehow getting me to incorporate a swing change in the middle of a fitting session. I was astonished when I saw the ball flight change. I've had instructors spend an entire lesson with me on that, and not be able to convey to me the proper method of squaring the face and changing the path. I'm not one that is able to make an instant change, but the fact we were able to accomplish it in that session amazes me. It was truly the best investment I've made in anything golf related EVER.. Also thanks to everyone for the comments, I was a bit hesitant to show my by far less than perfect golf swing to the world, but hopefully there are other high caps or slower swing speed players that may benefit from it, and also anyone struggling with a swing flaw....just know with a competent fitter/coach, drastic changes are possible. I will continue to work on this swing constantly going forward. Ian and Matt just do incredible work!!

Some of the best money I've spent of late was a 'fitting' that didn't result in a purchase.. Gav @ Custom Lab Golf, Hitchin UK, stressed that although my current setup wasn't ideal, it wasn't a million miles off. "Fix this with your coach then come back.".. Another great video gents.
Props to the guys at TXG. Some subtle changes made quite a noticeable difference.
Most of us higher handicappers would be apprehensive to showcase our swing.
My hats off to the gentleman in the video being brave enough to share his fitting experience which in turn will help a lot of people show what a proper fitting should look like.
Great video. I don’t want to give any spoilers but when I started a few years ago I used a set of used MP5s with heavy shafts.
Then I listened to the range guys and tried all the new game improvement irons and shot all over the place.
On vacation in Chicago I wandered into a fitter and he said I had the same problem as in the video and set me up with P770s.
In 6 months I went from a 15 handicap to a 2. Now to work on my driver, ugggh!

Excellent TXG. I have messed up a fitting due to feeling less of a player as the fitter. That sarcastic look your given when making a bad swing due to nerves or just not a good ball striker. Watching Ian give a lesson on ball strike to better the fitting experience, priceless. you guys truly are looking out for the golfer, not just trying to sell clubs. love it

Seeing a fitter make a small tweak to Rob's swing was very refreshing.
I have literally had the opposite experience during a fitting at a different company. I am a high handicapper who was having trouble with my long clubs and scheduled a fitting. I was able to schedule a lesson at a range near me with an instructor I have seen before in the interim. After that lesson, my swing changed a decent amount and I became a less consistent ball striker because of it.
I considered canceling the fitting having a sneaking suspicion that it would not go well. I kept the appointment but my suspicion was correct. I wanted to do a fitting, not only to see what club specs are good for me but also to learn more about my swing.
When I got there I started hitting shots with a driver and a 3 wood and was hitting pretty consistently low heel shots. After about 15 minutes the fitter gave the option of canceling the fitting at no charge or continuing but pointing out (fairly) that spending upwards of $500 for a new driver probably was not worth it.
At this point, I felt super embarrassed and gained pretty much nothing from the fitting. I was not necessarily looking to buy equipment on the spot and was more wanting to get a better understanding of my swing and what can help.
It was clear to me at this point that the fitter was not interested in helping my game and instead was only concerned with making their commission, so I chose to end the fitting and leave. I respect that the fitter chose to not charge me for the fitting but I did not respect his complete disinterest in helping me learn more about my swing.
Fantastic, I've know Rob for a while and am very jealous he did this before me. I wish I had known he was coming as I would have accompanied him!!! Great Job!!!

Amazing to see Rob be able to make such dramatic path & face angle changes and then be able to hit functional golf shots. The more I hear about turf interaction, the more I understand why I sort of figured that out myself without being able to exactly describe what it was - and why I have always been drawn to more cavity back type blades and not mid sized game improvement stuff - the club just goes through the ball & turf more consistently and that means better shots more of the time. Great stuff Rob!
Massive change on path. A video on what you done to help Rob would be beneficial to many amateur golfers I see.
This video should put the entire fitting industry on alert. I have heard multiple times on other UA-cam channels with fittings, and in person at multiple retailers....”our job is to fit around what you bring, not change your swing.” And some of those swings really needed a tweak that no club could change. It’s really sad. I realize companies have to move product to stay in business, but there is a better way. Keep changing the golf world boys!! Love it!

So good, gentlemen. Really great to see that the probability to improve can be vastly increased by a properly motivated and educated fitter/instructor. That's using all the tools available to the player's benefit.
Great to see (GolfSpy) Rob on the channel. With all of the internet discussion over fitting the last couple weeks this video could not have come at a better time. In this case it was both clubs and instruction to help your client. To get someone to go from 8 degrees out to in to 2 degrees in to out is a huge improvement.
This is a great video, sometimes it can be a slippery slope where a fitting turns into a lesson and a fitter becomes an instructor. You guys handled it with excellence. Sometimes fitters forget that there is a human element involved and the client isn’t a robot. Kudos again to you boys 👍👍👍

If I ever travel to Toronto... I'll be stopping in. You're more thorough and knowledgeable than even guys at Club Champion, which is about as good as it gets near me.
This video also goes to show that high HC guys should go get fit... and they shouldn't be ashamed of their game. You don't need to hit your 7i 180 and carry a single digit index to show up at the fitting bay.

For the skeptics out there, this is really what a fitting with Ian is like. Its totally clear that he's trying to find the combination of equipment that works best for you. There is no pressure and he has a ton of patience. As an 11 handicapper, I have lots of less than brilliant strikes. There aren't enough good things to say about TXG. Having gone through the bag with him, I wouldn't go anywhere else for clubs.
Knowing you and knowing your game the first thing I thought when they handed you the 565's was "hey, didn't he just sell these on the THP site!" I loved watching this video and hope a lot of people learn and understand what you can get from a quality fitting process! Can't wait for the driver fitting!
Ha Chris, you are right, had them in the bag when we played last summer, and sold them over the winter to help fund the 790's :(
Awesome awesome awesome video guys. Can’t tell you how impressed I am with Ian. Didn’t know throughout this one how it was going to conclude but the fact the he ended up in a club he was using just a year ago was very cool and a good lesson for all of us tinkerers. Hopefully Crossfield would approve, bahahahaha!
This wasn't what I expected, this fitting actually went they way I hoped it would after seeing Rob hit his original irons, the swing changes were excellent, so well done Matt & Ian. Rob may find later the original clubs need to changed to allow him to reach more of his potential or he may find his clubs are OK. I do suspect that some club fitters at some shops I've seen may have still ended up with Rob buy clubs he possibly didn't need!
It will be interesting to see what's going on with Rob's golf in 2 or 3 months. I found the fitting process fascinating. I am curious about Mat & Ian's backgrounds in the golf industry, e.g. Golf Pros, skill level, Handy caps etc. Matt & Ian could you please give your audience an idea of your golfing back grounds in the industry & playing level. I loved seeing what you did with Rob, really good work guys.

This was excellent I go over the top just like Rob so it was a perfect lesson for me I hit the Srixon 545s and switched to the p790s with the F3 recoils loved the lightness but didn't help the over the top went back to the 545s in a steel fiber I 95r and they work great thanks again!

Great stuff. I wish all fitters were like Ian. Shows what can be done when a fitter is interested in improving a player not just selling them clubs. Rob that's great showing your swing and well done for the improvements. I have always been able to bring my a game to fittings, even if it disappears on the course

Well done Rob!!!! I'd love to get in and see these guys myself. If i wasn't on the other side of the planet i would haha. I'd love to do a video as i have a bit of speed and myself i have done a lot of tinkering and learning. The biggest thing i had overlooked was turf interaction from sole widths. There has been times i thought it was just me but now i can see it's most likely from club design. Something i wouldn't have put much thought into when talking turf interaction.
If you guys ever do a giveaway for fitting with a flight package, I'll enter as many times as i can 😂😂 if i can afford it i would love to come and meet you guys one day and do a fitting. My sister did move to canada recently but i think it's a fair way from you guys
Reminds of when I went for a driver fitting about 5 years ago, after a few shots with my own driver the fitter suggested trying to change my angle of attack to reduce spin and immediately it went 20m further. After an hr a new driver was in the bag with a 30m gain, he didn’t think that just fitting me would get the best results and a slight change actually made more of a difference
This is a great video and fitting! I am planning on getting a full bag fitting sometime before next spring, wish I had the opportunity to do it with Ian and Matt! I could certainly use the advice, I don't even know what category of clubs I should be looking at right now. I feel like my swing speed is too fast for the game improvement (110+ mph on driver, 92+ on 6i), and that my consistency isn't good enough for a player's iron.
Let me know if you guys want a video of fitting an improving 17 handicapper (used to be 23 hcp 9 months ago!) from his ancient Ping G5 irons and Diablo Octane driver!
Rob,Ian,Matt fantastick. A true reflection on why so often club technology is abused rather than used. The manufacturers obviously need turnover to fund development. However the end user is betrayed by there lack of ensuring the competency of the majority of distributors is qualified to optimise club fitting.

That's what I'm interested in for my iron game from a sole width perspective affecting my turf interaction in a negative way. I have only really owned inherited TM RAC cavity back irons with stock steel shafts that are quite thick and am intrigued to see the differences between using a thinner game improvement/crossing over to blades as well as fitted shafts for delivery. Would be super excited to get this part of my game optimized and my scores would dramatically drop. GIR is my primary enemy. Driving, chipping, and putting have been pretty strong. Need more birdie opportunities.

Really loved this video guys. Awesome to see an average golfer like Rob go thru the fitting paces. As usual, the education you guys delivered was awesome. Reaffirmation of how sole interaction impacts swing results was huge. Also impressed that you guys helped Rob tweak his club path to deliver greater benefits with his own clubs. To net this out - in Rob's case, would your final recommendation be for him to move to the Z565 due to increased consistency of strike vs. his P790 combo? I presume that heavier shafts in the P790s would lead to more consistency of strike for him as well, correct?
For sure Anthony, the performance of the Z565 was so much better especially in consistency. We could really hear the difference in strike between those and the P790, just not the same level of performance for Rob's swing. The slightly heavier shaft seemed to help Rob mitigate that over the top move a bit.
Yes sir. Rhe 565 will be on the docket and will put the brakes on my club tinkering.

Would have been interesting what details Ian told.... Can you tell me? Just the hint to change the swing path never is helping out. The awareness of it is a little part but the golfer needs furthermore some help. Can't tell how everybody in my golfing community in Germany loves your channel. And some different music😂
Hey Dr. It was three things really, which sounds like way more than someone should try in one lesson let alone a fitting, but one of them was kinda easy (having a stronger grip, with both hands) as for swing path, just really concentrating on the path down to be closer to the path back, I of course didn't' get to perfect, but improved enough to make a difference. The third thing was wring hinge. I had what most will call a cupped wrist angle which can lead to an open face so we worked a lot on keeping flat even a bit bowed to exaggerate the motion.
^^^ As Rob said, getting the club face in a stronger position allowed him to start to swing more from the inside as there was no longer a need to pull across the ball to start it on line.

Depends on the dynamics of your swing Benjamin, but when you start approaching the 100mph mark with the driver look into a stiffer flex.
Great fitting! Hate to say it again but it shows how close you guys and Mark are in philosophy. I just did a fitting for Titleist AP 3s last Saturday. I took my coach and she was wonderful to have there. As close as I could come to traveling to Toronto.

Exact opposite, I buy balls and grips, now and then a shaft. Just had a driver fitting and now I see why I need a 3w, iron, wedge, and putter fitting. Late to realize how drastically important club fitting is. I want to keep the heads I have as I am not a big fan of collecting heads as I would rather use them versus storing them to never play them.

Just found the channel last week and I'm pretty much all caught up. Really like seeing these high handicap fittings since they're easier to relate to.
Question for the channel though, what does a full bag fit run on average? Not the session cost, but the cost of putting all these clubs together?
In one of the driver fittings there was mention of a $500 shaft on one of the new drivers which I imagine puts you over $800 already. So if you grab that driver setup and then do an iron/wedge/putter fitting to fill out the other 13 clubs what will that come out to?
Are there other options available for someone that wants to get fitted but an $800 driver would eat up over half the budget for?
EDIT: maybe we can get a video of a customer getting fitted on a budget and see what value you can pull out from there.
Those types of prices can be common when purchasing a set with aftermarket shafts - we do also provide customers with a quote including stock shafts so they can decide according to their budget.
You guys are awesome and I think I've seen every one of your videos. By far, this one is my favourites! Thank you for all your work.
I have a question for you, but first a little bit about me. I'm an 8.5 hcp index, 71 years old. I hit my driver on average a little bit over 210 yards. My 9 iron carries 103 yards. I have a solid short game. I've been seriously considering taking a club-fitting session but recently I made a shocking discovery about my swing. I got hold of some face tape last year. Used it on my driver for a few range sessions then left it my bag over the winter. I was on the range last week and decided to use the face tape with my driver and found that almost all of my shots (18 out of 20) were extremely towards the heel. I tried correcting this and it took 20 strikes until I could hit about 15/20 on the sweet spot or slightly toward the toe. This was frustrating and the only way I could find to not hit toward the heel was to address the ball a full club-head width away from the ball.
I decided to try the same thing with my irons. I found that I hit 20/20 between the sweet spot and the hosel, no matter how I tried to strike toward the toe. I adjusted my address position further and further away from the ball and the best I could do was slightly toward the toe on the sweet spot. That was two days ago. Today, I shanked two iron shots even though I was addressing the ball a full club-head width away from the ball. I obviously have an issue that will involve a lot of practice to cure.
My question is, is it really worth it to go to a club fitting in the middle of such a major swing change?

You may want to find some consistency with the swing before committing to a clubfitting. A competent fitter can certainly help you work towards your desired performance, but if you feel uncomfortable going through the process while making significant changes to your swing there's nothing wrong with waiting.

Club face first! Stronger grip, feeling the club in a more closed position in the downswing - naturally allowed Rob to swing more from the inside because he no longer needed to pull across it to start the ball on line.
Do you happen to know of a club fitter in the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas area that takes a similar approach as TXG? I've tried contacting a few that I've found via Google searches but just from a brief phone conversation I get the sense that selling me a new set of clubs is the end goal vs what you guys demonstrated in this video, which to be honest I found as a really refreshing take on the fitting process. If you are reluctant to make a fitter recommendation I completely understand. No worries. Just thought I would ask. Love the channel!
We generally recommend Club Champion and True Spec as good fitting studios, can't guarantee your experience of course but they're a good option if local to you. In terms of finding a fitter that will be as attentive to your swing dynamics, that may be a tougher search but there are certainly good fitters out there. Do as much research as possible, that's your best bet.

How can GI irons with jacked lofts, bent back to more traditional lofts, perform? Would they “not swing right” because they’re not designed to be played as such
As long as you're not adding too much loft, it shouldn't be an issue. If you add too much loft you'll add too much bounce to the club simultaneously.
What are your thoughts on MOI matching and/ or progressive swing weighting?
Was a bit like my fitting a few weeks ago. Somewhat disappointed that enough inconsistencies in a 22 handicap swing make club change of no benefit. Same with the driver. Did discover the 3 wood dilemma leading to upping the loft of the 3 and 5 wood and ordering less stiff shafts. I guess that with maybe only one major consistent ‘flaw’ , fittings can have a profound result. What do you guys think? Thanks for the ongoing super video sessions.J.
Depends on the player Jeremy, and good question. For Rob, it was really the combination of the club path and open club face that were causing him issues. For example, fitting a player with a similar path but more square face (someone that hits a consistent pull fade) would likely not require any intervention with the swing. We definitely could have offered Rob some decent improvement with new clubs and fitting alone, but wanted to take it to that next level for him.

Gr8 video & instruction. Question for you. I'm mid 60s, 15 handicapper, swing speed with 7 iron low/mid 80s. Modern Drivers & shafts are built lighter than in past so we mortals are able to generate more club head speed. Problem for me is that standard shafts are any 45" & with light head/shaft, I have little/no idea where the clubhead is on backswing & this results in all sorts problems - coming down too steep/out -in path/inconsistent strikes on face. Isn't a problem with light head/shaft that they lure you into swinging too fast, so you lose rhythm, tempo and so accuracy and with it distance. Be interested in your views.
Have the swingweight measured, it's probably on the light side.
Outstanding video guys! As I have said before...please open a store in St. Louis, MO. So I have a set of muira wedges with older kbs tour stiff shafts (impulse eBay purchase) feels nice and heavy and I hit them pretty good for a mid handicap guy. I also have the z565 irons with modus 105 shafts. My question is that I cannot "feel" the head or much with the irons, but can feel almost everything with the wedges. Any ideas I can bring to a fitter? I was wondering how to make the srixons heavier? Something else?
Have the swingweights checked for sure, that would be a good place to start and then assess adding weight through lead tape or shaft tip weights if necessary.

Would be worth trying, but wouldn't recommend having them changed out of the 565's without the opportunity to test first.

I'm a 3'ish handicap. I picked up my Z765's today. Fitting with Ben here in Oregon from The Tour Van. I'm coming out of a combo set of Apex and Apex Pro's. The sole of these 765's are absolutely amazing. I "feel" like I can swing 9 degrees down and the club just works in and out of the ground. You don't know how much you're protecting against a heavy shot until you don't have to worry about a heavy shot. Question, this V sole seems to be amazing for any handicap level. What type of swinger is fitting into the MP-18 family and Callaway Apex Pro sole designs? Shallow, digger, low spin loft, etc?

Does changing lie flatter correct heel strike and vice versa? Ive seen the guy at Orka do this to set lies for club fittings
Sign of a good fitter. Not just trying to sell clubs to make money. Fitting is a lesson as much as it is an equipment change.
Can you explain turf interaction differences? Larger soled cavity backs vs mid size or blades and what affects it has? What happens to the face?

Ian if weight was a issue why would you not try adding weight or fitting one of your 790's and different shafts to get the swing weight up
I had a lie angle test done with a launch monitor and a board and I would have been 4* flat... the pro didn’t want to bend my clubs because he said my swing was too far in to out... so he wanted to change my swing and now I can’t strike a ball well at all... should I go back to my old swing or keep working with the new changes? I have had lots of range sessions and rounds but it ends in a bad mood and not wanting to play...
You can adjust lie angle over time as your swing improves, it's generally not a very expensive or time consuming thing to have done.
