Hello friends, Lately I have been listening to lots of spiritual gurus online and my mind is still confused in understanding the definition of "awareness" and I can use some help. Spiritual leaders says awareness is "aware plus presence of being" They also say that awareness is everywhere. This is exactly where I get confused, because in my experience and knowledge the word awareness is RELATED to only living organism, only living beings can experience awareness. Example humans, trees, animals, birds can be aware at all times because of their physical presence to experience awareness. I do understand that in spiritual world, awareness means presence of no thoughts, just pure consciousness of knowing and I agree. But I get confused as soon as they start talking about non physical things like empty spaces and relating that to awareness. If you take an empty space in the universe and call it awareness, my mind cannot process it. How can an empty space be awareness? In order to be aware there has to be a form, isn't it? And if you say awareness is everywhere in the universe, does that mean universe is alive? Empty spaces are alive? And if your answers to my above question is YES, is there any scientific proof of that or are we just "assuming" it? Empty space is just empty space, made up of nothing. Why do spiritual leaders call it awareness ? Sorry i may be amature here but i woukd love to get anh views to clairy my doubts as j am clue less here. Thanks in advance for any possible help here.
To further Rupert's mention of our true nature (Self/God/Awareness/Soul/Atma) Sat-Chit-Ananda and to quote Pantanjali, "The Soul does not love it is Love itself. It does not know, it is Knowledge itself. It does not exist, it is Existence itself." Our "experience" of existence without objects is not some coma-like void, but that of absolute Bliss (ananda) which is unconditional as the Love aspect is. Rupert is speaking mostly of the Sat (Existence) aspect here.
in the deep sleep, where dreams are vanished, the knowing is just there in itself knowing itself.. there is no "other" there.. its like a mirror without anything to reflect.but it has the quality to reflect in its very nature..it is its very nature of being to know itself...

The guy who asked the question didn't understand I wish he understood what Rupert was trying to tell him. Awareness is awareness so it is already aware of itself. The knowing is always present and doesn't need objects or words because its just knowing, knowing g and awareness don't require speration or multiple objects because it is one. Thank you for helping me understand this.
Makes sense. Consciousness preceeds matter. Matter includes all objects including the physical me. Matter exists in consciousness not the other way around.
This is the next level conversation, that is beyond mind ♾️, i always wanted to know what i am without this body and mind , now i got it , this awareness is made up of two qualities that is BEING and KNOWING and it is dimensional less, infinite, ever present , immortal , it is ever present either you die or live , everything is happening on the screen of this awareness.
I have watched many of Rupert's vids. The mind has difficulty dealing with subjectivity minus objectivity. His simple analogies worked wonders for me. So many people like this guy struggle to let go of objectivity. Our mind is overloaded with beliefs and we know extremely little. The comfort in knowing I AM is true peace.
A steady meditation practice with faith as the foundation might be invaluable. Faith, here, being the trust that meditating is a worthy practice that will yield change. Although the change will not arise by the terms of your desire, there will be change.
Awareness knows itself by being itself; it's nature IS knowing -- its -only- experience is knowing itself. This is the language Spira uses in speaking about Consciousness.
Just watched Rupert's comments on meditation. From my current perspective, I can understand his view of meditation. I'm not clear if he is saying that all forms of meditation are not required. I understand the state of awareness he speaks of is only hidden by the faintest veil of illusion and that it's only a matter of having the clarity to see the truth. Not everyone is at the point of being able to consciously/spontaneously make the leap into the reality he speaks about. For myself, it has been a gradual process. I am a recovering drug addict and have done time in jail for violence. I've lived on the streets and have been locked up in mental institutes. I tried to make life bend to my demands and paid the price. For much of my life, it appeared I was my own worst enemy. It took what it took to get me to where I am today. My only regret is that other people got hurt along the way (although that may have simply been their karma). I tried different meditation techniques and found it was impossible to still the mind and achieve the level of consciousness Rupert speaks about until I was instructed in the practice of mantra meditation as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. With Transcendental Meditation, the mantra is used as a vehicle to go beyond thought and the need to think. With only a few repetitions of the mantra, the need for thoughts, attention, focus, effort, gradually dissolve until there is nothing but the experience of pure being. It does not require constant repetition of the mantra, or any form of belief, faith or intellectual understanding of the process as that only keeps the mind and attention stuck in the details of some other self imposed illusion illusion. At present, I don't really need to introduce the mantra any more. Simply having the intention to experience "Being" is enough to gain the clarity of transcendental consciousness. I don't have to be constantly telling myself mentally "I am That" because it is permanently established at a deep level of knowing beyond the intellect. It seems no matter how long I continue to practicing this technique, there is always a deeper level to experience to be realized. There is no final arriving. It's like the more the intellect, mind, ego duality is burned at the alter of the "Absolute" the more extensive and boundless is the experience of "Pure Being". This meditation was useful in that it gradually attuned the mind, ego, and intellect to surrender to the experience of pure awareness itself... to the source of thought before it is divided into its varied manifestations and realities. There were no labels, categories, assessments, judgements or concepts at this level of awareness because these only serve to create and maintain a sense of duality. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi refers to it as the state of restful alertness. TM helped to transcend the boundaries of my self imposed limitations to experience the "Absolute" as the truth of who I truly am. Over time, I recognize the results through the enrichment and enhancement of the quality and experience of day-to-day life. In the stillness and silence of meditation, I experience the dynamic aspect of "Pure Awareness" ... It is the source, power, and energy of the full potential of all possible manifestations before they have any actual, individual expression. The accumulated exposure to this unconditional consciousness is the permanent, unchanging, infinite, state of "Being". I am that transcendent quality of my own self referral state of Awareness.
Wonderful Mr. Robert Roberts. I sincerely appreciate your great effort to get back. Wow... 👏👏👏hearty congrdulations. When there's HIS grace nothing can stand. Yours is a case in point.
Rupert, thank you so much for your clear and transparent explanations. I am now constantly aware of being present and have less and less thoughts. It is so beautiful that I enjoy every day and am curious as to what the day will bring. At last I "got it".
Midiwave Productions Well how come I wasn't conscious before I was born... What was I doing in 1920? Ya know it's kinda hard to accept what he's saying when I have no recollection of any experience prior to my birth.
A bit late reply but heres an answer: Before your bodys birth there wasnt any object for your current bodymind to be aware of, consciousness was just being. If there was other people that lived earlier, their bodymind shared their own limits, after breaking and disapearing its the end of that bodymind, an aware body 100 years ago doesnt share anything objective with your bodymind hundred years later. The body is limited, awareness is not.
Niko So basically what you're saying is... When we "die" our consciousness goes back to the way it was before we were born, kind of like the deep sleep state? If that's the case, then what's the point of that type of consciousness! It's almost like being non-existent.
No, consciousness isnt affected at any point, it is the uknownable, not a thing, shining knowing. Not tarnished and undependant of the state of your bodymind. And yes, it is "nonexistent" for the mind, mind doesn't know any qualities of the knowing, the awarness shines its knowing on the 'mind' and the 'world'. They cannot go back upstream to see the consciousness. And yes.. there is no goal, any point or anything to achieve.

THANKS.
indeed, there comes a point where listening to these vids and reading the books etc does literally nothing except stimulate more thought- the mind can never ever 'get' it nor 'create' it
My current teacher says we can just sit with spacious selfless presence. My understanding is that if "I do" this enough no questions or answers will be needed. Present reality sort of reveals itself. The tendency to conceptualize ceases.
Forget I. just be amazed at isness.Even if you were not born. This isness (awareness)was there. just stop giving any importance whatsoever to You (your iamness).what is left is pure awareness pure Bliss. The moment of feeling amazed appreciating wonderfulness of consciousness is the moment of enlightenment.
I really feel it's perfectly possible to doubt that I am. To doubt being itself. Even awareness being aware of itself implies two. Awareness that is aware of itself as awareness. So there are two there.
No. There are no two things. Awareness is IT's nature like heat and light are the nature of Fire. There is no fire without these two aspects. Consciousness is Awareness itself.
Has the cognitive realization of 'no self' expanded into a more complete realization of 'no thing'? If not, I humbly suggest that you direct the same self-abolishing practice toward things. It's the other side of the question, "If there is no self, who is not happy with what is?" Namely, if there is no thing, then what is there to avoid? This realization came later for me, and it helped burn into the mind a reminder of the absolute: desire for someTHING other than what exists causes pain.
Like worldly pleasures, unworldly pleasures offer many opportunities to trade your crude trappings for more refined trappings. If you seek awakening and liberation from suffering, you need not chase after altered states of mind. They are not mutually exclusive, and they are not causal. If you decide you really must have a psychic experience, go for it. I recommend that you reevaluate that goal after you have some experiences under your belt. Don't mistake pleasure and delight for liberation.
In fact, Awareness only appears to have the two qualities of "knowing" and "being", this is still a compassionate concession to duality. We tend to think of these as different things, but they are in fact one. It helps to think of both Knowing and Being as "illumination".
Yes, I think I see that now - knowing, being and experiencing all seem to blend into one 'experience'? Those 3 words\descriptions can be rearranged and still describe the same thing\experience? We are being knowing or knowing being or experiencing the knowing of being, being the knowing of experiencing??? Ha ha!?
Rupert I think you can not be sure if we would know ourselves without any input/experience. But when there is something to know, from sense organs, then we can know ourselves. Isnt an unconcious patient does not know himself for a month long when no input is available. And he thinks he must be just sleeping for 1 day at most when he wakes up? I think in the deepest samadhi also people looses themselves for days, they can not say that they were sitting there for 3 days, they think it was 5 minutes. I remember Sadhgurus experience was like that also
"its nature is knowing" can awareness only know, or more exactly be self-aware, through a human or does it know through all of this which we call matter?
Rene thats what the issue is for me the body is a sensation you cant ignore it. So how do you be aware of being aware if the sensation of the body is naturally felt in awareness?
@@jakelerms1935 sensation of the body is naturally felt in awareness - triggers the question of whether the awareness is in the body or body is in the awareness. If source of sensations of body is outside, body too should be an outsider to awareness not vice versa.
@@jakelerms1935to be aware of being aware - awareness needs to split atleast into 2 so that a part of it has to be observed by the other and vice versa which is what is happening in our daily lives, eg flowers-beauty- beholder. Here awareness is present both inside the body and outside. Now if the awareness has to be aware of its 'being aware' through some corner only (say the sensitive Body), then the conclusion be like: it can JUST BE what it is without requirements/possibilities of any proof. Hence if you wanted to know whether you are there or not, to say ' yes, I am' to yourself you don't need any proof which may be need of somebody else. (But if you wanted to see how is your look you will search mirror, to hear- cry/speak/sing... life is going on) Enjoy. Om Namah Shivaya
I agree that consciousness don't need any object to experience itself but practically speaking if we don't have our brain which is an object then it's not possible to know the consciousness. Please explain if someone understand this! Thank you
@suchit bhagat: But you're starting from a certain assumption about reality: that material objects exist. If you're not interested in challenging that assumption, then this teaching is not for you . ..
Yes Mind and Intelligent act as tools and pointers to it. But Awareness aware of Itself without these aids. Out of body experiences are proof for this. Consciousness never dies. It may become devoid of bodies but the Infinite Limitless Consciousness never moves. There is no second. It is Ekam. Adviteeyam. One without a second.
The sun wouldn’t know it is light or warmth without darkness and cold. Awareness wouldn’t know itself as awareness without something to be aware of. It’s all within awareness, but for it to know itself is must imagine there’s something separate from it. That’s the reason for the physical universe and the expression and experience of life. It is all awareness being aware of everything it contains. Maybe awareness may know of itself as awareness in its natural state, but it cannot experience being awareness without something to be aware of.
@1.42..its nature is knowing.without any objects will it know itself?.like..I exist. In deep sleep, awareness will be aware of itself? Awareness will be aware that..."see iam existing as awareness without any objective quality "..??
So it's like putting your attention on nothing ( if there were such a thing ) You have to BE awareness in order to experience it ? But there's nothing going on and there's nothing to do ? so is it's all about being empty ?
It's basically being awareness itself cause that's what you are, it's true bliss, imagine living a life where your mind and body doesn't control you, you're not dwelling over the past or worrying about the future, you're pure awareness of the present moment. When you live as your body/mind it's very unstable and always prone to suffering, once you take a step back and abide as pure awareness, love, peace, bliss, compassion, gratitude, forgiveness, knowledge..etc are all side effects of being your true-self. This pure knowing literally got me off anti-depressants I've been taking for years and allowed me to live peacefully and blissfully because I no longer identify with my mind, instead I became the pure witness of it to where it no longer has power over me, I use it only when it becomes handy for me, I don't allow it to make me insane with neurotic thoughts like it did most of my life (I was diagnosed with depression, anxiety, OCD and bipolar), hope that helps! Namaste!
@@alxiroi You have to learn to be fully present in the moment, remember the mind cannot do that, it's finite, it only knows past and future. Had you ever had a moment in your life when you were so fully immersed in the present moment time flew by? An hour flies by yet it felt like minutes, that's because you were fully present, when you're fully present time doesn't exist, it's enteral and is beyond space and time, that's your true nature! It's just that with our social conditioning we've forgotten that. If you truly meditate when you're suffering, go as deep as you can with inquiry and you'll truly find out that the person who is suffering doesn't exist! Even many neuroscientist agrees that the self is an illusion, lookup Sam Harris explanation on that. Also lookup on Google the happiest man in the World, he was literally a French scientist who gave up fame and fortune to become a Tibetan Buddhist monk and he fully lives in the moment and exerts amazing qualities to him such as loving kindness and compassion which lit up all kinds of brain signals when scientist were testing him. Remember you have to let go of your past conditioning, you have to realize that you're no your body/mind/ego, those are finite objects and they're not you, like Rupert said ask yourself this "am I aware?" when you ask yourself that your attention goes inward and you'll realize you are aware without the mind interfering, it's pure knowing. You have to become the pure witness of your experiences. Learn to meditate while watching your breath, if a thought comes don't judge or engage in them, just slowly go back to the breath, watch it go in and out, pretty soon your thoughts will get weaken to the point you realize you're not your mind and thoughts, soon they'll become a servant to you not a master. Exercise, eat healthy, practice gratitude, compassion, forgiveness and loving-kindness these all ground you into the present moment because you'll have such a sense of overall well-being you won't be dwelling over the past and worrying about the future, it also helps keep your egoic mind in check. These are only a few but they really helped me, just know that you're not your mind/body/ego, you're the pure awareness that is witnessing them, keep up the practices that helps you and sooner or later abiding as pure awareness becomes easier and easier until it's as natural as your breath, that's when you hit that "Oneness" with everything. Hope that helps, take everything I said with a grain of salt, only with your own direct experiences you can tell whether it's working for you or not, namaste!
It is the mind/senses that creates the object. If there is no sense awareness of it, it doesn't exist. We think we exist in the world but in fact it is the world exists in us. Btw...there are no shortcuts or tricks to Awakening.
Every quality mentioned is out of the human experience...this is constantly using vocabulary that was developed by our brains with a specific reference. WHY this metaphor ..why involve the mind and such intellectualisation....how can this help anyone EXPERIENCE directly when it is another level of abstraction
Awareness without object like deep sleep is not in time so for the human mind is just like being inexistant,You are aware but for the human mind is like being uncounscious, that s how i see it but does not mean i abide in it.

Right, Pure-Consciousness-Without-An-Object. This is experiential but not in a dualistic/relativistic sense. Access "Mahamritunjaya mantra - Sacred Sounds Choir" Listen to it for 5 min per day for at least two weeks. Enjoy the Sat-Chit-Ananda, The One, the Self.
No. It is not a feeling because feeling needs the role of mind. It is not thinking as thinking needs the role of Intellect. The Conscious is the one that illumines both. It is beyond MIND, INTEELECT, EGO AND MEMORY. Is SAT CHIT ANANDA. EXISTENCE, CONSCIOUSNESS, BLISS. I AM. PERIOD.
But when you say awareness is aware of itself or answer the question “are you aware”, you are validating it with your experience of objects. “I can experience hence I am aware”. When there is no object as in deep sleep and knowing that awareness does not have an objective quality, how can we say awareness is aware of itself. The empty space in the analogy was “granted” a magical power to be able to be aware of itself. The question is, how can the empty space be aware that it is an empty space when it’s an empty space?
@@magmade Yes, that's one formulation -- like in Thornton Wilder's "Our Town". Another, similar, formulation is that Reality limits itself . . . simply because that realizes a vast multitude of potentials that wouldn't be realized otherwise. When evaluating that perspective one has to then ask oneself: "Would I prefer that there were NO Reality at all to the Reality we seem to have (?)" Big responsibility to ask that question . . . and live the answer.

But this is not necessarily a FIELD of .conciousness outside of itself..this is what we experience as consciousness this 'oscillation/reverberation' is each side of the system connecting to the other, becoming aware of the other parts of the brain. When the system is alive it is just 'on'..silently active...awakened silence.. The more evolved the brain, the bigger the cortex...and fold back...and connections. This echo or reverberation of/between parts of the brain will stop just like a forever ON fridge stops, when unplugged ..ie the brain, and it's awareness of its awareness dies with the nervous system. The two sides of itself. ...yes they WILL die when the nervous system no longer reverberates. HOW CAN WE KNOW OTHERWISE, OTHER THAN FROM AN ENTITY WITHOUT THIS MAGNIFICENT BRAIN MACHINE ie no LIVING person (ie brain) can project their experience beyond this quality of the brain...we can't check that consciousness is present without the brain ( as he is suggesting i.e. that everything came from consciousness -ie that it is the precursor of everything ) without removing brain to check it.
Cool. I am aware, therefore, I am. What is awareness? It just is. It is not thought, belief, emotion, or concept. It is not created by a mind. A mind is created by it, all minds are. It is not created by substance. Substance is created by it. We are all of awareness and also awareness itself. We are many and yet one. It is not just awareness. The mind is limited, 'it' is not and so cannot be fully conceived by the mind. The Tao that can be named is not The Eternal Tao. Awareness is how we experience 'it'.

I am still left wondering, what is it that you want, honestly? I guess you crave an experience or mental state. A "oneness" experience is grand, then it fades. In my own limited experience, mindfulness is the singular critical ingredient to fruitful practice. With mindfulness, the mental process of story-making and labeling is laid out like film on a light table. The awareness faculty can be endlessly employed to observe arising labels and thoughts. But will you... can you ever know the object?
"I want empirical proof"..."I'm not looking for an understanding" - Do you see the contradiction here? If you seek an "out of the ordinary moment" then you must look in the right place and the empirical mind isn't the right place. This is in fact what produces ordinary moments.
This primary concept, I amness is DISHONEST, because it is still a CONCEPT only. Finally one has to TRANSCEND that also and be in the nirvikalpa state, which means the concept-free state. Then you have no concept at all, NOT EVEN of I am. In that state one does NOT know that one is. This state is known as Parabrahman: Brahman transcended. Brahman is manifest; Parabrahman is beyond that, PRIOR to that; the Absolute. Do you understand what I am driving at? Whatever you caught in your attention, that attention should eventually turn into no-attention. The state that is finally left over is Awareness, Parabrahman. "Nisargadatta Maharaj"
Thank you, that is exactly what I had been wondering about. So Awareness's attention would be totally fixed on the experience of Awareness/Being, there would be no-thing else to place it's attention on?

To further Rupert's mention of our true nature (Self/God/Awareness/Soul/Atma) Sat-Chit-Ananda and to quote Pantanjali, "The Soul does not love it is Love itself. It does not know, it is Knowledge itself. It does not exist, it is Existence itself." Our "experience" of existence without objects is not some coma-like void, but that of absolute Bliss (ananda) which is unconditional as the Love aspect is. Rupert is speaking mostly of the Sat (Existence) aspect here.
This is undoubtedly the Ultimate truth, nothing else is. If you happen to see and understand this then you are a Realized being!
Right on! It's something that you have to have your own direct experience with to understand it.

Hello friends,
Lately I have been listening to lots of spiritual gurus online and my mind is still confused in understanding the definition of "awareness" and I can use some help.

The guy who asked the question didn't understand I wish he understood what Rupert was trying to tell him. Awareness is awareness so it is already aware of itself. The knowing is always present and doesn't need objects or words because its just knowing, knowing g and awareness don't require speration or multiple objects because it is one. Thank you for helping me understand this.
12:50: "Right there, in the simple knowing of our own Being, Awareness is knowing itSelf, without the mind." Very nicely said Rupert.
The clearest teacher of non-duality I have ever heard. Astonishing and beyond belief and its limitations.
Fascinating teaching - so simple yet profound, so clear! Thank you Rupert! 🙏🏻

That was a good one. Thank you

Rupert, thank you so much for your clear and transparent explanations. I am now constantly aware of being present and have less and less thoughts. It is so beautiful that I enjoy every day and am curious as to what the day will bring. At last I "got it".
Since you "get it". Can you answer me one question. When we die, are we still conscious?

I really feel it's perfectly possible to doubt that I am. To doubt being itself. Even awareness being aware of itself implies two. Awareness that is aware of itself as awareness. So there are two there.
Correct
Rubert, … can we speculate that awareness is Eternal Light and the life essence of everything.
Stay with the "YES".
Good now 12:08 that I know my being to understand awareness.
Thank you.
dude got analogies for days...
Ha ha!?
You forgot a third quality: Loving, as awareness allows / accepts everything arising in the experience

(But if you wanted to see how is your look you will search mirror, to hear- cry/speak/sing... life is going on)

I agree that consciousness don't need any object to experience itself but practically speaking if we don't have our brain which is an object then it's not possible to know the consciousness. Please explain if someone understand this!

@suchit bhagat: But you're starting from a certain assumption about reality: that material objects exist. If you're not interested in challenging that assumption, then this teaching is not for you . ..

Namaste!
@@chormpan2104 And how do you get there ? I'm aware of my thoughts, body and world but i still get identify to them.

The mind is trespassing....that’s a good one.

Thank you, that is exactly what I had been wondering about. So Awareness's attention would be totally fixed on the experience of Awareness/Being, there would be no-thing else to place it's attention on?
I suggest you to read the "Nisargadatta Gita" for further instructions!
Cristian De Cecco actually we experience this state of "no-attention" or "aweareness without concepts" every time we go to sleep, during deep sleep :)
Rupert would not disagree with you.

if there is truly only one awareness, why is it that when one person gets enlightened, the rest of the people in the world do not?
@Dan Teo: "Why is it that when one wave in the ocean becomes calm . . . the rest of the ocean does not (?)"
How do you know this is untrue. The energy that an enlightened being carries is infectious just being in such a ones presence is enough to wake us up.
The Enlightenment is confined within the Body Mind Organism that is called Human who feels limited. Like any thought and feeling is limited within oneself experiencing them, the Self Realisation also is to that particular Organism only.
