You don't really lose anything/much from turning a tenon and later cutting it off with a bandsaw. Plus you can remove the tailstock eventually and finish the point.

Hi Andy Great little project I did some last Christmas and had a few dig ins cleaning up with the skew must try your rounded end parting trick. A tip I spray methylated spirit on hot glue and after a few minutes it lets go (not hot and sticky still hard but easy to clean off) Good to see you back at the happy place Regards
Hi Mal... I hope that you enjoyed making yours as much as I have... A catch on these is annoying because it usually means that you have to take all the branches down to match... The parting tool is great for those hard to reach places... Ahh yes.. I have heard of the maths trick... but I never remember these things when I need them... It's probably an age thing... Haha... Thank you so much... it's good to be back in the workshop... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
I never got round to turning any Christmas decorations this year. December was a bit of a no workshop month for me. Will need to make double this coming year. They look great Andy.

Nice one.Always good to have a refresher before the Christmas season. I have made a number of these every year of various designs. My best sellers are ones without the trunk ,since our spruce trees here in Montana have branches right down to the ground. Thanks.

Hi Rene... I'm not sure about the moisture content... I tend to use Hazel wood and even when using green wood it hasn't cracked when fully dried... But some wood such as Cherry would definitely crack... I agree that sealing it well after turning would slow down the drying process... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
That's a beauty Andy, I'll have a go at one of those. I didn't quite understand the rounded parting tool - could you make a further comment one of these days? Cheers mate and God bless you all there.
Hi Mark... Thank you very much.. I'm glad that you liked it... The parting tool is just a really easy way to finish the bottom of a deep groove.. My gouges wouldn't get down there without catching the wings and the skew chisel would leave it with a sharpe internal cut... and easy to get a catch... I don't like skews... Just rounding off the corners of a 2mm thin parting tool made it quick and easy to finish off what can be an awkward place with no chance of catches and easy to sand... I hope this explains why I used it... Thank you... God bless you and yours... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Hi PJ... Thank you very much and I'm glad that you enjoyed the video... I have heard of the denatured alcohol trick but I keep forgetting to try it ... I'm sure that it would be better than hot sticky glue on my fingers... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
For decades I have turned Christmas trees and snowmen out of the trunk of the prior years Christmas tree. I allocate 3-5 minutes each. After roughing them with a gouge, turn them entirely with a skew chisel. Using a skew, a good turner can leave a tool finish that does not require sanding. I date them with the previous year date and give them away to friends and family.
Hi Roger... Well it sounds like you have got it all worked out... Great idea making trees from left over Christmas tree... I hate the skew chisel so I always admire someone who can use it proficiantly... Yes.. great gifts... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Hi Bob... Thank you so much for your request... I'm afraid that I don't... I'm not experienced in such things and have very little spare time... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
@@kennethjess4 Hi Kenneth.. Thank you... I don't sell any of my stuff so I can't say what they would sell for... If I were to do a craft fair then I would sell these as an " impulse buy " item and price them at £5.00 If you can get the wood for free as I do then it's not a bad profit.. Consider doing some mushrooms too... Good luck with your craft fair... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Brilliant Andy that was a great video for a newbie to wood turning like myself I'm 71 and started just 2 weeks ago today. Looking forward to seeing much more of you in the future. By the way any tips on Sharpening the chisels. Cheers from Andy in Bognor Regis
Hi Andy... I'm glad that you enjoyed the video... Welcome to what I think is a great hobby... I heard that 71 is the new 41... Haha.. I wish... I am 60 this year so no spring chicken myself....but this is a great hobby for any age group... With regards to sharpening... I'm certainly no expert... I'm assuming that you have a bench grinder... if not .. it is a must... I use a bench grinder... for scrapers and screws just touch up keeping the same angles.. For my spindle and bowl gouges a made a .. gouge sharpening jig... to use on my bench grinder... You can get them on Amazon and Ebay and there are videos on UA-cam on how to use them or indeed make them... I can't afford the Sorby sharpening system which looks really good... I know that when starting this hobby it can get very expensive with lots of things to buy.. My starter .. to buy list would be... Bench grinder... chuck... band saw... bench sander... drill... hot glue gun... Hope that this helps... enjoy your new hobby... Any questions...don't hesitate to ask... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Hi Rob... Thank you very much... The parting tool works the same as a negative rake scraper but it is only 2mm wide and a conventional scraper couldn't work at that width... It's handy to have something so narrow to round off the those awkward places... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy

Hi Andy! Christmas tree? I am still running around in shorts here… And a whole forest of them on top of it!!! I guess I will have to prepare for cooler temperatures coming from west… I must say though that your little Christmas trees are very charming indeed 😊 I might be considering buying one if you might be selling them… It would make the loveliest Christmas decoration AND could be used as a holder for my pony tail thingies 😉😁 So, great multi function design once again 👍🏻😎 Beautiful, absolutely love it 😊 Thank you for sharing and getting me into a Christmas mood, makes the hot temperatures much more bearable 🤪 Take care, Andy, and have a lovely and relaxing weekend 🙏🏻😊 Bye 👋🏻 😉👋🏻 Jude PS: Huw, where art thou???
Hi Jude... Shorts !!!! I've been wearing a fleecy jacket indoors for the last couple of days and I never wear shorts... The reason for having so many trees is that I filmed making each one and when I came to use the footage it was corrupted and useless... 🙄... I sorted it out in the end of course... I will make you a special one... it will be my pleasure... Haha.. you and your pony tail thingies... you must have lots... Christmas is just around the corner.. they have the Halloween stuff out in the shops already 🙄 You have a good weekend too Jude. 😊 Huw came down to Cornwall this week and we met up with him and his better half... We had a meal out... very enjoyable... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy 👋😉👋
@@AndysCornishCreations I know... looks a bit like I am obsessed with my pony tail thingies, which of course I am NOT but I have them in all colours and I am forever looking for the colour that suits the outfit of the day and of course I never find them because they are scattered all over the house and so I keep thinking to myself, if only I had a practical thing to keep them on display... such as your most recent tea candle holder, for example, ha ha ha... You see, I did not even mention it, this proves that I am NOT obsessed with them, ha ha ha... Glad you and Huw (note: rhymes) had a great evening out with your better halves! I must catch up with Huw's videos, I feel so guilty... Change of topic: What do you mean, you never wear shorts?!? What have you got the stove in your workshop for??? From now on, you should be wearing shorts for your videos! I am sure Ivy would appreciate that too... Well, having said that, I have just made the first fire of this winter season in our kitchen stove, so the shorts season is over for this year... as the word implies, it is usually "short", ha ha ha... Enough of this nonsense, you take care Andy, looking forward to your next video! You take care, too, byeeeee! Jude

Hi Joe... I have used both green and seasoned wood, I like using green wood as it cuts nicer but both are fine .. I have had no problems with shrinking or cracking.. I apply a wax finish and that slows down the drying process... I use Hazel wood mostly which works well and avoid woods like Cherry which seem to crack a lot... Take care my friend and all the best from Andy

That could be said about most items, it the Artist, creative spirit that makes each one unique and special. When I gift something I made or painted..they got my time and small bit of my creative spirit..that's the difference in mass made or one by one..

You don't really lose anything/much from turning a tenon and later cutting it off with a bandsaw. Plus you can remove the tailstock eventually and finish the point.

Hi Andy
Great little project I did some last Christmas and had a few dig ins cleaning up with the skew must try your rounded end parting trick.
A tip I spray methylated spirit on hot glue and after a few minutes it lets go (not hot and sticky still hard but easy to clean off)
Good to see you back at the happy place
Regards
Hi Mal...
I hope that you enjoyed making yours as much as I have...
A catch on these is annoying because it usually means that you have to take all the branches down to match...
The parting tool is great for those hard to reach places...

It's probably an age thing... Haha...

Nice one.Always good to have a refresher before the Christmas season. I have made a number of these every year of various designs. My best sellers are ones without the trunk ,since our spruce trees here in Montana have branches right down to the ground. Thanks.

What is moisture content of your little log. I’m wondering if a seal coat would prevent cracking etc if the wood is not dry enough.
Very nice little guy and as always Very relaxing and educational. Have you tried denatured alcohol to remove hot glue? Works very well.
You need to learn to use the skew. It is faster and cleaner than any other cutting method. @@AndysCornishCreations

Andy, Great video. I am considering going to my first craft fair later this year. Can you give me an idea how much your Xmas tree would sell for?
@@kennethjess4
Hi Kenneth..
Thank you... I don't sell any of my stuff so I can't say what they would sell for...
If I were to do a craft fair then I would sell these as an " impulse buy " item and price them at £5.00
If you can get the wood for free as I do then it's not a bad profit..
Consider doing some mushrooms too...
Good luck with your craft fair...

Nice video Andy, going to have to try the hot glue and rounded parting tool…wouldn’t that be the same as a round negative rake scraper?

I guess I will have to prepare for cooler temperatures coming from west… I must say though that your little Christmas trees are very charming indeed 😊 I might be considering buying one if you might be selling them… It would make the loveliest Christmas decoration AND could be used as a holder for my pony tail thingies 😉😁 So, great multi function design once again 👍🏻😎 Beautiful, absolutely love it 😊 Thank you for sharing and getting me into a Christmas mood, makes the hot temperatures much more bearable 🤪 Take care, Andy, and have a lovely and relaxing weekend 🙏🏻😊 Bye 👋🏻 😉👋🏻 Jude
PS: Huw, where art thou???
Hi Jude...
Christmas is just around the corner.. they have the Halloween stuff out in the shops already 🙄
You have a good weekend too Jude. 😊

We had a meal out... very enjoyable...

Jude

Was the Wood Green or been left to season?.
