Thanks for this Mike. I have been looking for ideas for Christmas gifts for the gals in my family. I try to make something new for the tree each year. This is perfect
I was recovering from some knee surgery and struggling to come up with this year’s Christmas ornament. Knee’s getting better and this ornament gets the nod. Friends and family, the count is 36. Thanks!
Thanks Mike. Really good idea to bring this project to life via video. As always you are quite thorough with your detail. A bit hard to hear you sometimes but no reason to spend more money. You get your point across and that is what is important.
Wonderful project and thank you for the follow-up video with the better angles and decorating tips! I made 3 in the shop today and have the blanks set for 9 more!
Thanks for the inspiration Mike! I've been wanting to turn a lighthouse for several years and after seeing your video I loved the look of the lantern and decided it would look good for the top of a lighthouse. I just never had been satisfied with the designs for the top I'd seen others used on theirs. I turned my first lighthouse using this design and I think it came out pretty good. I also made one of the antique lanterns for my mom.
Very nice... I made about thirty Christmas trees to give away last year. I may well try making a few of these ornaments this year. Thanks for the idea and demo.
Hi Mike... Love this idea... nicely turned and a great finish... I may be copying this one if you don't mind... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Mike, nice ornament and demonstration. You did not mention the diameter of the 4 holes. Looks to me between 3/4-1” diameter. I will be doing this project and will see what size works. Thanks for all that you do.
These are great. Been looking for a kitless ornament of some kind and looking forward to trying this. I still need to go back and check out the candle one you did as well. Thanks for sharing.
Sir I hope you don’t mind I shared your video on my facebook. I am in awe with your work. You are a real artist. I hope one day I’m able to make things as beautiful as you do.
I really like this one Mike. Not that I didn't like your previous stuff but this one just reached out and grabbed me. It looks like an easy turn. And the tea light gives it a little extra. You didn't mention the diameter of the side lights. I am guessing about 3/4 inch. Maybe a bit smaller. Thank you for sharing. Remember, when the wood goes around, the face shield goes down. 🙂🙂
I very much like the lantern ornament, Mike. Well done. Some of your turning, however, was blocked because of the camera angles (the initial turning of the roof, for instance) and the volume was in and out. I had to keep increasing the volume to hear what you were saying.
@@MikePeaceWoodturning Sorry Mike, I missed the link but just ordered the kit now. Thanks for getting back to me. I also found about 10 or 12 bottles of acrylic pre thinned paint for my air brush. I can use a brush to paint that stuff on or spray it?
@@alandisomma-od5fz Easiest to brush on. I do not think the metal reactive paint is thin enough for air brushing. The reactive agent is just a pump aerosol to spritz on the surface.
@@MikePeaceWoodturning Thanks. I will learn more once I get the kit I ordered. I was thinking that I would use the thinned acrylic paint just to make some lanterns of different colors just in case someone wanted them ?
Mike -- I really liked this idea and may give it a go. When I was watching the video, I thought a set of the lanterns would really look good if you could use multicolored tealights (instead of simply warm white, some lights would be blue, others green, red, etc.). Sure enough, Amazon has them for about 50 cents each (when bought 24 at a time). You might want to add a set to your links -- just to give everyone one more option.
Hi Mike,...I turned the Antique Lantern ornament you demoed and was a hit with friends and family. Thank you. I do have a question regarding finials..How do you under cut the base so that it fits the curvature of the ornament. I can't seem to be able to get a tool in close enough without hitting the chuck or getting a catch. Your help would be appreciated. Thanks
Thanks, Mike - I will definitely have a go at making one of these! Can you tell me about your drill table? It looks to be made of wood or melamine laminate or similar?
Mike. I really enjoy watching your videos. You do such a great job in explaining what you are doing that it seems so simple to do. Where do I get a texturing tool at. Have you ever thought about using a wire for accent. I hope you never run out of ideas to make. Thanks
Thanks for your kind words. I actually did use a burn wire on a couple but mostly obscured by the metal reactive paint. Check out my Amazon shop link in the description for every video. www.amazon.com/shop/mikepeacewoodturning I will get a small commision on anything you purchase from Amazon withing 24 hours of you opening up my shop link.
7/8" as posted in my pinned comment and a couple of responses to the same question. Can't believe I did not make that clear in the video like I should have.
Loved the videos that you put out. Just watched the lantern one and as a new turner it is with in my scope. Where bouts are you located. I'm in Washinton. Eric morgan
I did a quick test run on this ornament and loved it. I guessed that the 4 holes are 1”? I didn’t hear you mention the size Keep up the awesome work you have been very inspiring to me and I am sure many others.
Very neat Christmas project and definitely goes on the "things to make" list. One question, would there be an advantage to drilling all the way through the blank for the side holes instead of drilling on each face? ... or would that introduce other issues?
I would be concerned about the holes being perfectly centered if the blank was not absolutely square. It could cause an off center hole on the back side - Twice. But try it and see and let me know how it works out for you.
Mike, great project, always looking for a new Xmas ornament, this one is perfect. I like your commentary as you’re working, however, it would be most helpful if you spent some time moving the camera to give us a better look at what you’re doing. Having the camera in only one position throughout the sequence leaves viewers wanting. Keep putting out these projects, love ‘em!! -Dave
Mike, I was following this video to try and make a later. You said that from the bottom of the block the hole center should be 40 mil. That equates to .04 inches. In the video it looks like you measured up about 1.5 inches. Do you have plans for this on your site....Thanks...
@MikePeaceWoodturning Thanks, Mike, I'll search ebay. Thanks for all of your videos! I made your snowmen last year for Christmas gifts. Looks like this year will be this lantern.
So, I’ve just finished making several of these for holiday gifts. After showing them to various people the next thing asked after how do you make them is how much do they sell for. Anyone with experience selling their creations?
I do very little selling but have set upa table at a few church and neighborhood holiday sales. I sell my birdhouse ornaments for $35. These are actually faster to turn but I believe they would easily sell for about $35 in my area. YMMV.
The project is great and the method is well presented... However it is disturbing that you encourage wearing a watch and ring while you are turning. It is a potentially dangerous practice
Thanks for sharing your concerns. We each have to decide what is a risk worth mitigating and what isn't. And we need to understand what that risk is. I have done both. YMMV.
