- Here is a vintage National League baseball game featuring the St. Louis Cardinals @ Houston Astros on Friday, May 22, 1987. The pitchers are Tim Conroy and Nolan Ryan. The video ends abruptly a couple pitches into the 9th inning - there was a run scored in the 9th but it had no bearing on the final result. Posted for archival and entertainment purposes only.
Thanks so much for posting this! Sure miss those old Channel 5 broadcasts, I watched many a game back in the 80's as a teenager...Jay Randolph, Ron Jacober, Mike Shannon, Jack Buck...great times!
This is AWESOME!!! I keep an eye whats out there for Cards in ‘85-‘88 and never knew this was out there. Any more rare ones I would love to see or know about! Thank you sir
Lead the league in ERA, but your team averages 1.69 runs per game when you pitch. 🤦🏻♂️
Yeah, it should be criminal of what lack of offense they gave ryan that year
This was Tim Conroy's last year in the majors. Pitched in 10 games, started 9. 3-2 5.53 ERA. Never fulfilled potential w Cards or the As.
I was curious who was drafted ahead of Nolan Ryan and found out he was drafted in the 12th round.....wow
Yeah I don't know where they got this "number 5" business. I knew he was drafted...without looking....something like 225th or so, maybe later. Piazza was the same way.
What a real treat to watch the Express in his prime. How did he not win the cy young??? Lol. What a beast out there.
He was still very dominant, but most would agree that his time with the Angels and first couple of years with Houston was probably Nolan Ryan’s “prime”; so 1973 to about 1982.
Great video! thanks for posting! if you have the other Nolan Ryan games, Please upload.
Nolan Ryan had a 2.70 ERA that year but finished with an 8-16 record.
would win a cy young today but back then it was tougher to win a cy young
Just proves that a pitcher's win-loss record doesn't matter.
@@thejuansshow6410 in a way yes, since they mainly looked at win-loss records back then
Glenn Davis... didn't help enough
Seconding what STLSPORTSINSIDER said. This is awesome!
4:00 nolan ryan getting old...pitched for 6 more seasons
47:00 Jack Buck takes the mic
Conroy just had a few weeks left in the bigs and he was done
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE GAMES WITH NOLAN ON THE CALIFORNIA ANGELS! CAN ANYONE HELP OUT?
Interesting dialogue! We’ll have one of these domes some day... Bill Bidwell would like one right now. And then Jay dissing all these other cities that have since surpassed St Louis. Yes, 1987 was a happier time in the gateway city and Jay Randolph’s optimistic commentary is proof of it.
I am SO glad these guys were wrong about a "Dome" in St. Louis. Thankfully St. Louis built a real, retro-style "open-air" park when Busch 2 was torn down. NO domes in baseball is a good thing!
Re: 20:49..while ABQ isn’t all that great, you couldn’t pay me to live in St. Louis; hot and sticky, and it features neighborhoods that you wouldn’t dare venture into after dusk.
These announcers have no idea what they're talking about...Nolan Ryan had a ton more the 2341 strikeouts at this point, and he was taken in the 12th round of the 1965 MLB draft, 295th overall...not 5th overall...jfc lofl
Astros felt of so close to going to they first World series last season, thanks to the blown call in the 1986 NLCS, Fred Blocklander the umpire called Reynolds out, which he safe by ½ step of so.
Jack Buck was a legend. I could listen to him for hours.
That 3-2 change-piece to McGee at 1:33:40 was not fair. 87mph screwball.
Umpires
HP Jim Quick
1B Charlie Williams
2B John Kibler (Crew Chief)
3B Bruce Froemming
Thanks for this blast from the past! As a lifelong Cards fan, its great to see this lineup again!
A little slice of my childhood !
go get a burger after the game ..?
1987 goat season
Jay Randolph (PBP) & Mike Shannon (C) 1-2/8-9
Shannon (PBP) & Randolph (C) 3/7
Jack Buck (PBP) & Randolph (C) 4-6
I love how telecasts were organized like that back then. The viewers had the pleasure of listening to everyone in the booth.
Made a summer trip to St.Louis in late August of 1996 watched through field glasses in the Cardinal’s radio booth Jack Buck and Mike Shannon and a young Joe Buck…wonderful time at Bush stadium vs Rockies that weekend, thanks Billy
Who else thinks this theme sounds like the "AWA on ESPN" theme song?
47:00 Jack Buck & Jay Randolph.
This is truly a window into the past man. Absolutely love this thankyou so much.
