    My first Cardinals game ever in person was the walk-off steal of home by the backup catcher Glenn Brummer. Can you imagine that?! And then they won it all. I listened to Jack Buck and Mike Shannon call the games on my little transistor radio, under the covers so I wouldn't get in trouble for staying up past my childhood bedtime.

    I remember that 1982 World Series, very exciting, really good baseball. Now this is only my 10th season as a Cardinals fan, but seeing the way the ballclub promotes their own in a such a classy way reminds me that that was the best switch in fan loyalty I've ever made. I'm a lifelong passionate baseball fan, but I have yet to experience my favorite team winning the World Championship. In 2005, the Astros were swept by the White Sox. In 2013, the Cardinals lost to the Red Sox, 4 games to 2. This ceremony reminds everyone that winning a World Championship is an extremely special accomplishment. Jim Kaat did most of his Hall of Fame damage as a starting pitcher with the Twins. But his only World Championship came as a left-handed relief specialist with Whitey Herzog's 1982 Cardinals. With the starting pitching performances the Cardinals have gotten since the trade deadline, maybe 2022 is the year for the Cardinals' 12th World Championship. And my first as a fan. Go Cardinals!

    • @diddlez2
      @diddlez2 Рік тому +1

      What made you switch from the Astros to the Cardinals if you don't mind me asking?

    • @Famijoly
      @Famijoly Рік тому +1

      @@diddlez2 The Astros didn't fight the move to the American League. Bud Selig leveraged the fact that the Astros were in the process of being sold to level out the membership in each league. It was a difficult decision for me, but I didn't want to give up the National League. St. Louis is the closest National League city to me, plus I've always respected the Cardinals organization. It helped a bit that at the time, the Astros were down, in the midst of their worst three-year stretch ever, and the Cardinals were perennial contenders. But once I made it a point to go to St. Louis and see the Cardinals in person in 2013 and again in 2014 (and again in 2018), I was totally hooked. There was no going back. Go Cardinals!

    • @kevinpayton2664
      @kevinpayton2664 Рік тому +3

      It's still weird seeing the Astros in the American League. When the Astros joined the NL Central, they and the Cardinals in my opinion had the game's best rivalry from the mid-1990's through the 2000's.

    This is a fun find on UA-cam as I am old enough to have started following the Cards with the 1960 season. I was introduced to the very realistc Baseball Strat-o-matic probality game from a buddy my first year of college Iin1971 and right away plenty of 1960s teams I knew so well growing up. The last year I bought a few teams was 1982 and still on occasion play that game I bought so long ago. For me what makes the 1982 Cards team stand out was the team speed including Lonnie Smith, Willie Mc Gee, Tommie Herr, Ozziie, and David Green on the bench. It was a typical Whitey Herzog team. Can't forget Keith Hernadez, George Hendrick, and Joaquin Andujar and Sutter pitching. They had a good bench. Of course they were a very balanced team but from Strat-o-matic still know this team so well. In the game they are all still in their prime. Thanks for placing on UA-cam.

They're very worn out after all these years and hope to get them transferred to digital at some point.

    Whoever planned this event for the Cardinals should be fired. Making those old guys climb down from a truck. Taking forever to find Ken Oberkfell a chair. The Bud jingle that never ended. This was a truly special occasion, and it came off about as dignified as a downstate Illinois family reunion.
