    How to track your basal body temperature (BBT) chart for fertility
    Hi there! This is Dr. Sheena from Qi Medicine Acupuncture Moonee Ponds Melbourne, Australia.
    If you need help with your cycle or BBT, you can book in for telehealth with me from anywhere in the world here: www.qimedicine.com.au/book-ac....
    I wanted to talk to you about basal body temperature charting (BBT charting) and how it can be a really useful tool when you're looking to get pregnant.
    What is a BBT chart? We use basal body temperature charting in the clinic regularly as a really effective tool for helping us to diagnose and treat issues with fertility, so we can have a look at what's happening with your body by looking at your chart.BBT charting is something that we often require our clients to do, and it can be an amazing tool. It gives you so much information about what's going on with your cycle that it's really the most valuable information you could have. I will show you how you can do your basal body temperature (BBT) charting at home so as to understand exactly what you're looking at and understand why it is so important. Every basal body temperature chart is different, and there is no such thing as a perfect chart, but generally speaking, they look like this.
    This chart shows a whole menstrual cycle, and you can see that it’s biphasic - meaning there are two distinct areas of cycles. The first phase is the follicular phase, which starts from day one of your period or the first day of proper bleeding, to ovulation around the middle. The luteal phase is that second half of the cycle. This BBT chart is done using the Fertility Friend, one of the best free apps for BBT charting, as the algorithms they use seem to be the most accurate, plus it is so much easier to read than other apps.
    What should a good BBT chart look like? Generally, a period can be anywhere from 26 to 32 days; it does vary quite a lot. There's no such thing as a perfect period month because every woman is different. A woman can have a longer or a shorter cycle, and it still is a perfectly normal cycle.With BBT tracking, we're not only looking at your most likely fertile days, but we're also looking at several other important readings.
    Factors such as your overall temperature, what's happening with your cervical mucus, intercourse days, illness and stress all play an important role. This will help us to figure out your specific picture of health, and help us to treat you accordingly in Chinese medicine. So if you're a little too hot or if you're a little too cold, we can help to balance you out. This will give you better health and better outcomes overall, which is essential for overall fertility health.
    There are many things that will affect your BBT readings. One of them is alcohol. If you drink that warms you up, that will disrupt your reading. If you're sick, that will also give a different reading. If you are highly stressed (say you've just had a big fight with your partner) that will throw reading off, plus medications, travel, and many other things. There will be fluctuations, and you will see that in your chart, so it is important to keep a track of these too.
    How do you use a BBT chart?
    To start tracking, you will need to put in your temperatures each morning after you wake up, every day, filling a chart throughout the month. To take your temperature, what you need to do is get a good quality digital thermometer; no need to go for the fancy $300 one! They're not necessarily any better than a good quality digital thermometer that you can get for $14 at our clinic.
    What are the rules when BBT charting? I cannot stress enough, how important the following rules are. if you do not follow them, then it simply will not work. Minimum of three hours sleep: You need to have at least three hours of sleep - one block of three-hour sleep - no less. So if you are getting up throughout the night - maybe you've got a toddler, or you work in shifts, or you have something else going on, it’s ok as long as you have a three-hour block of sleep, you can take your temperature after that. Because what we're doing is getting the base temperature, which is the lowest possible temperature of your body at that time.
    No drinking: When you wake up, it is very, very important that you do not drink - no water, no coffee.
    No eating.
    No speaking.
    Don't roll over and talk to your partner or your cat.
    No movement of any kind. Do not get out of bed, and you don't do any activity, because any of those activities will interrupt your temperature - they'll bring your temperature up or it will create some other disturbance.
    The only movement you’re allowed to do is reaching over and grabbing the thermometer and sticking it in your mouth!

      Thanks for your comment- Electric blankets can be a bit disruptive yes- I don't recommend them. Extra clothes shouldn't disrupt your temp too much, as long as you are not overheating!

      Nasim Malik the doctor said on the video sleep 3 hours unbroken sleep for 3 hour and then take your body temperature, So I think it should matter what time of day you have to work just long as you’re sleeping three hours unbroken sleep when you wake up no talking no drinking no moving out the bed she said to have Your thermometer next to your bedside on the floor or table before you take your body temperature that’s what she said on the video, she said on the video to use a app or you can write it down as well I Hopefully she’ll text you as well, i’m tracking my BBT too. Good Luck!!!

      Ha Nasim and Eureka- that's correct- you just need a three hours unbroken 'chunk' of sleep- doesn't matter if it is earlier or later in the evening. So shift workers can BBT too :)

    I'm dealing with obstructive sleep apnea, will me stopping breathing ruin the 3 hour sleep window to get an accurate reading?

    • @qimedicineacupuncturemelbo6600
      @qimedicineacupuncturemelbo6600  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Ingrid, good question. This may interrupt a fully accurate reading yes. But I would encourage you to chart anyway, as this will still give you a general idea of where your temps are throughout your cycle. Good luck with the sleep apnoea, I hope this gets sorted for you soon :)

    Ugh thank you! Ever since coronavirus came around I have been taking my temperature more often and I run a temp of 99 but my regular temp is 98.7. An I just found out about this. They really need to teach us better in sex Ed. I have NO symptoms but a headache which is normal due to my medicine and I been getting on my mothers nerves. An it is just starting to be embarrassing. My period usually is hectic so my calendar isn’t really helping.. I think after lock down I am going to get birth control 🙇‍♀️

If my temp is 99.0 and I spotted my last cycle, me and my boyfriend thought I was still protected by my birth control (nexplanon) it expired 7 months ago and I’m having symptoms. What’s the chances I could be pregnant??? (I had no idea it was expired)

      Some people recommend a basal one because its a little more precise. You can typically get one at a drugstore or on amazon for under $10

    Does waking up in the middle of the night to pee affect accurate results?

    • @ktnarnia
      @ktnarnia 3 роки тому +1

      Not too much. It depends on when you got up to pee. You want to make sure you are testing after at least 3 hours of sleep, no less than that. Ideally, after 5 hours of sleep. I have an issue where I wake up about 2 hours before I need to, to use the restroom, so I just ordered Tempdrop (arm band that tracks BBT for restless sleepers) and went for their plan that allows you to get a full refund if you're not pregnant within 6 months of purchase.

  • @helenarichard

    I still don't understand how the BBT method can predict ovulation. It looks like just another gentle dip in the follicular phase temperatures. I personally find my mood more reliable and easier than this. If I feel absolutely amazing, that is simply my ovulation day. I tried ovulation tests but they are scandalously expensive, and I notice a lot of contradictions as the whether to use morning or afternoon urine. Mine said to not use morning urine!

    • @helenarichard

      Ah and I made my own cycle calender in word and I track my cycle, where I write down my dates, moods, cycle length, averages, LH peaks, temperatures, and days I had sex. I find apps unreliable. Everything shifts and moves and is all over the place, if I edit something in the past! It's so unreliable!
